A first in first aid awards Homes plan on course A NEW awards program will honour unsung heroes who have saved lives or helped people in time of emergency by using first aid skills. St John Ambulance Victoria is asking people to nominate family, friends, work colleagues or classmates who have helped others as first aid responders. Frankston resident Brodie Harper, Nine Network Postcards TV show presenter, says being properly trained in first aid is a vital skill to learn. “If you know somebody who has gone above and beyond the call of duty, the First Aid Champion Awards is the ideal way to honour them,” she said. “Being a mother and working a job that requires me to wear different hats has shown me that First Aid training is vital for everyday living. You never know what’s going to happen and I always want to be prepared, especially when I have to travel a lot for work.” There are five awards nomination categories in the inaugural First Aid Champion Awards — Junior First Aid Champion (Under 12), Youth First Aid Champion (under 18), School First Aid Champion, Community First Aid Champion and Workplace First Aid Champion. St John Ambulance Victoria CEO Gordon Botwright said the awards will emphasise how important it is for people to learn first aid skills. “First Aid training is always such an important skill to have, no matter what age you are, and we hope to acknowledge all age groups, workplaces, schools, community groups and of course our volunteers, without whom our work wouldn’t be possible,” Mr Botwright said. “Last year alone we trained over 187,901 Victorian school children and reached over 313,337 people across Victoria. “It only takes one person to save a life. We think it is important these unsung heroes are acknowledged for their extraordinary acts of service”. Nominations close on 22 August. Win-

PLANS to build homes at the Kingswood Golf Course in Dingley Village are being watched closely across the municipality as setting a potential precedent for residential developments on courses. Kingston Council has been given permission by state Labor Planning Minister Richard Wynne to start the first step of the Planning Scheme Amendment process seeking community feedback. A planning application to subdivide the golf course into 760 lots has been submitted by property fund manager ISPT. The fund manager bought the course land for $125 million in 2014. The golf club merged with the Peninsula Country Golf Club. Kingston mayor Cr Steve Staikos said the consultation stage is a chance for people to make their views on the redevelopment known. “We know there has been a lot of community interest in the proposed development, and council is keen to ensure that Dingley Village residents are kept fully informed at every stage,” Cr Staikos said. “Council will be writing to all Dingley Village residents to let them know that now is the time to have their say. You can view the plans online or in person at the Dingley Village library or council’s customer service centre in Cheltenham. The applicant ISPT is seeking permission to subdivide lots under 300 square metres. The project’s senior development
manager Anna Martiniello said there are no plans for apartments or flats or multi-storey developments and “all buildings will be designed to perform to high-performance standards”. “We are proposing a master-planned residential community, with 760 individual lots. The development will include a mixture of low-density and medium-density housing, more than 14.6 per cent of the site dedicated to usable open space, flood retention works for some 62,000m3 of stormwater, more than five times the statutory requirement, a financial contribution to council of $7525 per dwelling, and a dedicated financial contribution towards affordable housing.” Save Kingswood Group Incorporated secretary Kevin Poulter said hundreds of people have signed an online petition against the residential development plans. “Up to 1000 tiny units is so out of character, they would destroy an entire village and affect nearly 10,000 residents’ quality of life,” he said.
