Kananook parking plan expected soon Brodie Cowburn brodie@baysidenews.com.au AN announcement about car parking at Kananook Station is expected soon. Frankston Council has put in a $22 million request to the federal government to build the car park. The News understands that a site compulsorily acquired by council near the Frankston Basketball Stadium will be offered to build the car park on. The federal government broke a promise to build more car parking on the Frankston line at Seaford and Kananook Stations earlier this year. Before the 2019 election it pledged to build the car parks but by May 2021, both projects were abandoned (“Scrapped car park plans a broken promise” The News 25/5/21). After the parking plans were scrapped, council publicly pledged to work to rectify the issue. It hopes that a public announcement about car parking at Kananook Station is imminent. When asked about the parking issue during a visit to Carrum Downs with PM Scott Mor-

rison, Liberal candidate for Dunkley Sharn Coombes told The News that “in relation to Kananook the situation was the council didn’t recommend that the car park be progressed with and so that’s where it stalled with the federal government, but the understanding is now that those negotiations are open again, and so we are revisiting those.” Liberal senator Jane Hume said that the federal government is “always in constant communication with those delivery partners, with councils and state governments to make sure that the projects that we promise can go ahead. Sadly on [the Frankston line car parks] unfortunately they couldn’t. But if there are other opportunities we’ll continue the dialogue with those delivery partners.” When asked to confirm that a solution has been reached on the Kananook Station parking issue, Senator Hume said “I have heard rumour but I can’t tell you how far that’s progressing just yet. It might just be a little bit early.” The office of urban infrastructure minister Paul Fletcher was contacted for comment.

Uncut gems A MAN from the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne has been charged over an alleged diamond scam worth $1.4 million. Moorabbin Crime Investigation Unit detectives have been looking into the scam. They say a man stole upwards of $1.4 million from three victims between September 2017 and October 2021. Police say the alleged offender told his victims that he owned a diamond mine in Sierra Leone. The victims paid the man to invest in the mine. The offender also allegedly asked for equipment and gifts “for his employees before on-selling items received in an offshore shop,” police say. Recently police charged a 42-year-old male with 150 deception related offences. He was
bailed to appear at the Melbourne Committal Court on 2 February next year. Victoria Police Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Venturoni said “criminals involved in the deception of others are often convincing and take advantage of people’s trust to exploit others for their own financial gain.” “The community can rest assured that Victoria Police will leave no stone unturned investigating online scams and frauds, given they often leave a significant psychological and financial impact on the victim,” he said. “Victims are often left feeling a wide range of emotions including anger, helplessness and humiliation but it is important to know that no victim is to blame, and help is available. If you believe you are the victim of deception, we urge you to contact your local police station.”
