Sapphires set to sing at Arts Centre THE story of The Sapphires is set to be told at the Kingston Arts Centre next month. The now famous Australian play, written by Tony Briggs and first performed in 2004, tells the tale of four young Indigenous Australian women who tour Vietnam during the war. The four performers travel across

the country to sing. The play is set in 1968, a year after the 1967 referendum that expanded the rights of Indigenous Australians. The play was adapted into a feature film in 2011, and won a Helpmann Award for best play in 2005. It will be performed at the Kingston Arts Centre by the HIT Productions theatre com-

pany. The company has taken the production across Queensland and New South Wales this year. Jade Lomas-Ronan, Lorinda May Merrypor, Mindy Kwaten, and Matilda Brown perform in the lead roles. The Sapphires will take to the stage on 10 July. Tickets at kingstonarts. com.au.

THE Victorian Electoral Commission have begun a review into the structure of Kingston Council. The electoral representation review will determine whether Kingston Council has an appropriate number of councillors, and whether it should remain subdivided into wards. If it is determined that council should remain split into wards, the number of wards and how many councillors per ward will also be reviewed. Kingston Council currently has nine councillors split into three wards. Electoral Commissioner Warwick Gately said that reviews into council structures are generally required every 12 years. The last review of Kingston Council by the VEC was in 2007. “The opportunity to have your say doesn’t come around too often, so it’s important to have a broad range of community members contributing to the shape of their local democracy,” Mr Gately said. “If you are interested in the future electoral structure of your local area, I encourage you to get involved. Public submissions are a vital part of the review process, providing valuable local knowledge and perspectives.” A public information session will be held at 6pm on Thursday, 20 June at the council chambers in Cheltenham. The VEC will release its preliminary report on 14 August. Changes to the electoral structure of Kingston Council will not apply until the next general election in 2020.

driving Brodie Cowburn brodie@baysidenews.com.au POLICE are warning microbrewery patrons to watch their alcohol intake after they caught a number of brewery visitors driving close to the legal limit over the long weekend. Operation Regal took place over the Queens’ Birthday long weekend, with an increased police presence working across the state to try and catch drink drivers. Microbreweries have grown in popularity in recent years, with a number of popular spots open across Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula. Frankston Police Senior Sergeant Phil Hulley said that visitors to the breweries might not be aware that drinks at the venues often contain a very high percentage of alcohol. “At these boutique breweries, one beer is a lot stronger than a regular beer usually is. A drink or two at these places might seem innocuous, but it might just push you over the limit,” he said. “A lot of times we pull over people who had been drinking the night before. In the morning we pulled over a woman who was taking her kids to the pictures, and she blew 0.047. There are police out in the morning, and if you’re even just dropping your kids off at football you still might be over. “You shouldn’t chance it and should always take a taxi or an uber. Losing your license has a massively negative effect on your life, so don’t risk it.”
