Getting ready for emergency Brodie Cowburn brodie@baysidenews.com.au KINGSTON Council has joined forces with Frankston City Council, Mornington Peninsula Shire, and Greater Dandenong Council to host an event designed to “educate the community and ensure they are emergency ready.” ‘Operation Emergency Ready’ will be launched on Saturday 13 October at Harmony Square in Dandenong. A range of interactive activities and demonstrations on water safety and fire behaviour will be on display throughout the day. Visitors can also meet with emergency services representatives and learn more about the work they do. Kingston mayor Cr Steve Staikos said local families could “gain vital tips to help them put together their own emergency action plans.” “We want to make sure our communities are kept safe and healthy, so come along to make sure your family knows what to do in times of emergency. It’s always better to be safe than sorry,” Cr Staikos said. Frankston mayor Cr Colin Hampton noted that earlier this year, a bushfire in Carrum Downs had caused an evacuation. “This event brought home the importance of being prepared,” Cr Hampton said. “We don’t know how we will react in an emergency until it happens
Fun run for funds AFTER a successful trivia night for Patterson Lakes resident Jackie Smith to help wither her bowel cancer treatment, her friends Kerri Tropea and Stacey Parkins will be embarking on a 70 km run this Saturday 13 October to “raise awareness and much needed funds to pay for her lifesaving treatment not on the PBS.” They will start at St. Kilda Pier at 6AM and run onto Dromana Pier at roughly 3pm. An open after party will be held at Two Buoys Tapas and wine bar in Dromana with $1 from every drink sold going to the Ms Smith’s treatment.
Aths up and running GR Bricker Reserve Athletics Track in Moorabbin will have its official launch on 5 October, signalling the end of a $1.2 million project. The running track was jointly funded by Kingston Council and the Labor state government, with council putting in $900,000 and the state government contributing $300,000. Moorabin Little Athletics Club boasts 250 members who will enjoy year round access to the new facilities.
