To celebrate being the o cial timekeeper for the Round the Island Race, the family-owned Marathon Watch Company is launching a Limited Edition Round the Island Race Marathon Stopwatch – shockproof, waterproof, nautical and able to deliver “precision timing to help competitors get across the start line in perfect time and reach the finish line ahead of the rest”. B&G app

B&G, a partner for the Round the Island Race this year, unveiled its app last summer and for 2022 has a number of updates including safety and navigation enhancements, personalised notifications, plus an anchor alert safety feature for premium subscribers. The B&G App is available on both the Apple Store for iOS and Google Play for Android. Premium subscribers now get a satellite overlay view, enhancing situational awareness with the option to choose between full view or land-only. In addition, they can select the transparency level of the layer. There is also a weather overlay, which includes wind, gust, rain and more. So you can predict what the weather will be like at a specific point in your trip. When anchoring, premium users can set their location and receive push notifications if the yacht drifts. Using GPS data, a breach of the geofence will result in the sound of an alarm, meaning “sailors can now be certain their anchor is not dragging and get a good night’s sleep”. You can also share tracks with friends and followers in social media channels.

This HP Ocean Quick-Dry T-shirt is part of the Round the Island Race Capsule Collection, “made for the warm days on the water, using a technical fabric that will keep you cool when the sun heats up”. There is UPF 50+ sun protection and it is made with “a unique 96% Ocean Bound recycled textile – developed with reused plastics that would otherwise become marine debris”.

Smell good at sea

Rowing team One Ocean Crew, first in the female class in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge recently, were sponsored by a company called Grangers, which assisted the rowers by ensuring they smelled good and were well-waterproofed. Easier said than done for four ocean rowers in an open boat. In 2005, Grangers became “the first manufacturer to invent a formulation that could both clean and reproof sailing kit using one washing machine product”. Grangers Wash + Repel 2 in 1 “maximises the breathability of your clothing, ensuring it continues to perform as well as when you first bought it and also helps to extend its lifetime”, they say. “Cleaning and proofing your gear separately usually takes up a lot of time, but with this new formula, simply add to the detergent drawer of a washing machine and you’ll be back on the water in no time.” There are other products available in the range.
