Everywhere from the school gates to the red carpet, the trend for multiple ear piercings has made a comeback. And if it’s good enough for our fellow respectable mothers Gwyneth Paltrow, Beyoncé and Julianne Moore – all of whom sport ears delicately peppered with diamond hardware – it’s good enough for me, so I find myself en route to Liberty London, home to piercing queen Maria Tash. Unlike the first time I had my ears pierced as a 14 year old, which ended up being a brief and forgettable experience, this time it’s a rather more leisurely and refined affair. Maria’s studio is swish and beautifully clean. She has garnered a reputation over the past 20 years not only for somehow making ear piercing relatively painless but also for her ‘ear styling’ techniques. If you choose to be adventurous, she can tell you exactly where and what you should have pierced in your ear based solely on your unique ear shape. I’m not quite brave enough for all that, yet, but spend some time trying a dummy ring in different positions to see what I like, and end up opting for a third hole in each lobe.
