YEAR 7 THINKING SKILLS

EMMA WATSON Sophie Jones, Year 7 My chosen outstanding individual is Emma Watson. If she is not classed as inspirational and phenomenal, then I am completely clueless as to who is! She is extremely highachieving and definitely my inspiration in everything I do. She has encouraged me to attempt lots of different things and give everything my all.

OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUALS PROJECT The following are extracts from some of the winning entries.

MALALA YOUSAFZAI Hannah Brooks, Year 7 Malala was born on July 12th 1997 in Pakistan. She is a black, Muslim girl who stood up for the rights of young girls to have an education; however, the members of the Taliban were not happy about what she was doing. She began campaigning when she was just eleven years old in 2008 by writing an anonymous blog about life under the control of the Taliban and she also wrote for the BBC. After she had been tracked down as the person writing these blogs, she was shot in the head three times by a Taliban gunman in 2012. The reason was that she had protested about the rights of young girls in education. The Taliban is a religious group of people who target people who are at war against their religion and also people who they think are doing something wrong. Pakistani doctors sent Malala over to England. She there recovered in a hospital in Birmingham. This makes her really outstanding because she is now walking around with friends and family even though there is a risk of her being shot again. The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the greatest achievements in the world. Malala, at only seventeen years old, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014. She won it because, even though she knew her life was in danger, she thought about those girls who longed for an education but couldn’t have one; she put other girls before herself even if that meant being killed for it. After she had been awarded with this amazing prize and she had become famous, her name is known for resistance by all girls around the world. At only 17 Malala has become a worldwide symbol of bravery; consequently she has travelled all around the world, spreading the good news that she will try to give to every girl the education she deserves. This, in my eyes, makes her outstanding.

Ever since the age of nine, Emma’s life has been extremely busy and she has had barely a second out of the spotlight because of her role as Hermione Granger in the films of the extremely popular Harry Potter series, written by JK Rowling. Every single thing about her is amazing and she has already achieved so much at the young age of 24! You would expect that all of this fame would have had an effect on Emma’s education; however it didn’t! She chose to continue with her academic work after the Harry Potter series ended and attended University. All of Emma’s hard work meant that by 22nd September 2014 she was able to fulfil one of her life’s ambitions and she earned a place at UNICEF where she is currently involved in a campaign for women’s rights. Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born on 15th April 1990 in Paris; however, she moved to England at the age of five with her mother (Jacqueline Luesby) and brother (Alex Watson) when her parents divorced in 1990. This was a very hard experience for Emma, especially at such a young age, and this would have affected any other child’s achievements; however, not Emma’s, because she continued trying really hard at everything she did. Emma attended the prestigious Dragon School where she began to excel at her school work and decided to take up acting. The acting school that she attended was called Stagecoach and by the age of six this had had such an inspirational impact on her that she decided she wanted to become an actress. Emma decided that she wanted to make her dream of becoming an actress come true and had already starred in many plays with her Theatre School when an even bigger opportunity appeared that was going to change her life. All of Emma’s talent and hard work led to her getting the amazing role of Hermione Granger! This immediately put Emma right under the spotlight; on the first day it was released it broke records for opening day sales when it came out in 2001. Emma was also a model for Burberry in 2009 and 2010 and was named Elle’s Style Icon of the Year in 2010. I find it truly fascinating and unbelievably inspiring that one single person can be so ambitious and hardworking. I admire greatly the amount of effort that Emma puts into everything. She has done so much to make the world a better place just at the young age of 24 and has already acted and fought for women’s rights! She has currently joined the UNICEF team and has helped to start a campaign called ‘He for She’ which has the aim of making the world a better place where women and men are treated equally.
