IN THE BEGINNING: After serving in the United States Coast Guard, East Carolina graduate Eddie Buck, Sr began his business career as a mortgage banker at Carolina National Mortgage Investment Co., Inc., where—after only three years—he was named executive vice president of the company. He later went on to graduate from the Northwestern University School of Mortgage Banking, and joined C&S Bank as executive vice president. ALL IN A DAY’S WORK: Homebuilders, commercial builders, and homeowners all frequent Buck Lumber. The company has contributed an extensive range of custom building materials to both residential and commercial projects. OFF-THE-CLOCK: Amongst other affiliations, Eddie is on the Advisory Board of the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, on the Foundation Board of Directors for Roper St. Francis Hospital, is on the board of directors of the National Bank of SC, was the chairman of the SC Railroad Commission under Governor Dick Riley, and was chairman of the board of the SC State Ports Authority under Governor Carroll Campbell. FACTORS OF INFLUENCE: In 1975, two years after being named one of the Outstanding Young Men in America and a mere ten years after first entering the business world, the enterprising Eddie Buck Sr. purchased CC Rhodes Lumber Company. In no time, business was booming for Eddie and wife Margaret at the newly named Buck Lumber & Building Supply, Inc. In the summer of 2008, Eddie opened the doors to the company's new state-of-the-art design center. An emporium of custom building products, the center is filled with multiple interactive product displays—windows and doors, mini-foyers with custom crown moulding, and house front facades with interchangeable doors.
