Hank Hofford
President of Bennett Hofford Construction Co. IN THE BEGINNING: Born in Key West, Florida in 1954, Hank came to Charleston in 1958 when his father, a member of the U.S. Navy, moved the family to Isle of Palms. During his formative years, Hank served as an Eagle Scout before going on to graduate from Clemson University in 1976. ALL IN A DAY’S WORK: Hank’s projects include single family residential homes, multi-unit apartments, a variety of commercial buildings, restaurants, and hotels. Notable projects include the Old Citadel, Charleston Music Hall (1000 seat theatre), Virginia’s on King, 39 Rue de Jean, Coast, and the Rice Mill Building. OFF-THE-CLOCK: Hank and his wife Susan moved from Mt. Pleasant to Edisto Island in January 2009. They have three children—Anna, Jessica, and John—and enjoy sailing, hunting, fishing, and traveling. Hank is also on the Board of the SC Maritime Foundation and Energy City, SC, which is launching a variety of alternative green energy projects in SC and nationally. FACTORS OF INFLUENCE: In 1983, Hank formed Bennett Hofford Construction Co. with Michael Bennett. Since that time, Hank and his team have renovated over 70 buildings in downtown Charleston and built over 400 homes along the coast in areas such as Dafuskie Island, Isle of Palms, Kiawah Island, and Folly Beach. They are known for crafting meticulously planned, architecturally themed villages, beginning with Seaside at Wild Dunes and continuing on to Kiawah with The Village at Turtle Beach, Ocean Oaks, Ocean Palms, and others.
