A Passion for Outdoor Living Maria Lynch Dumoulin, president of Kenneth Lynch & Sons, carries on the tradition of craftsmanship and classical design started by her grandfather almost a century ago.

Tell us about Kenneth Lynch & Sons.

Kenneth Lynch & Sons has a history that spans 100 years, with roots in the metalcraft of my grandfather Kenneth Lynch.

Our company was founded in 1927 and I am proud to be the third-generation owner, following in the footsteps of my grandfather and father.

What are some of your company values and how do you show those in your projects?

We design and manufacture three lines of garden ornamentation and outdoor furnishings. Our Estate Elements Collection features statuary, fountains, sundials, and garden ornamentation. The Florentine Classics Collection showcases handcrafted outdoor furniture, and the Lynch Urban Seating Collection includes park benches and site furnishings.

Can you explain some of the products you create and why you developed those pieces?

Founder Kenneth Lynch discovered inspiration in the classical style of European design. During his travels to Italy and other parts of Europe, he collected all types of ornaments and began to make molds to replicate these products in cast stone. His goal was to make the beautiful artistry of hand carved statuary available to the public by offering these products in a less expensive, yet stronger material.

These pieces are found in our Estate Elements Collection. The Florentine Classics collection was a perfect fit to accompany the classical design of our ornamental products, adding products for outdoor living and practical style to the mix, while still maintaining the timelessness of our company’s design aesthetic.

What makes Kenneth Lynch unique?

Our team is always delighted to work one-on-one with homeowners and design professionals to meet the needs of their outdoor projects. In addition to our vast catalogue of products, we are happy to create customized designs to bring each client’s vision to life. Our team provides advice, knowledge, and experience to the homeowner to facilitate their project and provide an outcome they will cherish, with products that will last for generations.

What are some of your plans for the future?

We’re excited to expand our product customization options to ensure our customers get exactly what they desire for their furniture pieces and other garden ornamentation. Every garden is unique, and we want to be sure to accommodate the needs of our customers. We are now developing a plan for spring 2022 to have furniture sets available for immediate shipment so homeowners can get started creating and enjoying their outdoor paradise right away.

Life In Color Loretta Bryan and Tori Mullin of Sherwin-Williams share their favorite color trends of the season.

Loretta Said: Emerald matte for walls—it has depth to it and is easier to touch up. ProClassic for the trim as it has a beautiful finish and is durable.

Tori Said: Favorite finish?

I love the fluidity of a high gloss finish. It elevates small spaces like powder rooms and invites movement across trim or long halls.

I once created the most stunning soft raspberry for a baby nursery. It was custom color matched to a section from the rocking chair fabric and accented with shades of pale green and white.

Favorite custom color you’ve created?

While living in Philadelphia I helped create a “muddier” burgundy. The final result brought my heart back to Charleston. I called it “Palmetto Bug-Undy.”

One of my favorite Sherwin-Williams colors is “Comfort Gray.” It’s my go to coastal color, especially for creating a spa-like atmosphere in a bedroom. So soothing!

Favorite Sherwin color?

Currently I’m loving minimalist tones like “Shitake.” It’s the perfect neutral to transition from gray without going too yellow or red in various lighting conditions.

I believe color sets the mood the minute you step through the door. Lately I’ve been painting cabinets and interior doors in dark, dramatic colors for some architectural pop.

Favorite way to incorporate color into a space?

I love using color to create volumes and shapes. Using a pop of color on the island or interior doors is a great way to sprinkle some happiness throughout the home.

At Home With

Toni Hammersley of French Mercantile When Toni Hammersley opened French Mercantile in September 2020 in the heart of the historic district of Summerville, she was eager to bring the European style home décor she loves to the Lowcountry. She’s carried the European style throughout her own home as well.

Toni’s Southern Living Magazine Farmhouse Revival was a must for an airy and bright feel throughout. The French farmhouse is designed with a classic style in mind to stand the test of time. Soft and muted colors integrated throughout the home paired with natural elements such as weathered oak, honed marble, and rattan give the space an organic feel.

Toni added in vintage florals and linens to exude a cozy feel. In addition to the interior details, the home also features a 90 foot wrap-around porch that Toni uses frequently for outdoor living and entertaining.

CRAFTED IN CHARLESTON

A Woodworker’s Enthusiasm William Witherspoon and Richard Deavers of Artisan Woodworking have over a decade of friendship and collaboration that led them to starting a custom woodworking business together. Now, they work everyday to bring stunning, one-of-a-kind pieces to homes across the Lowcountry.

Craftspeople William Witherspoon and Richard Deavers met 15 years ago when William made the move to the Lowcountry from Asheville, North Carolina. When William decided to start his own company, there was no doubt in his mind that Richard would be his partner. “He is one of the most talented woodworkers I have ever had the pleasure to meet.

He’s sort of the yin to my yang.”

In 2013, the two founded Artisan Woodworking.

Since their opening, Richard and William have grown their team to include four full-time employees, each of whom are knowledgeable and passionate about the custom woodworking services they provide homeowners.

The Artisan Woodworking team handles a variety of jobs. They will work on home renovations for large contractors and custom interior trim projects. Because of the wide scope of their projects, William says he doesn’t find they have one singular process, but their projects do all start the same; an initial meeting. During this meeting William gets a feel for exactly what the client wants so he can build a product they are proud of. Once they determine the wants and needs of a

Philosophy When approaching a job, William says he likes to ask himself how he would want his mom to be treated.

She’s usually having work done on her house, he notes. “Sometimes it’s easy for a contractor to get very technical when explaining things,” William says. “What may be common sense to me may be completely foreign to one of our customers.” It’s important for William and Richard to explain things honestly and in simple terms for their customers to easily understand their process and what exactly they do.

What made y'all want to become custom home builders?

Our fascination in construction started when we were very young. We have built a mélange of things over the years. We began working as carpenters for a custom home builder right out of high school. We’ve always had a passion for what we do and take a great deal of pride in our work. After several years of working as contractors on smaller projects, we decided to venture out on our own and established St. Pierre Construction.

What makes your construction company unique?

There’s a few things that I believe make us a unique construction company. Jeff and I are very “hands-on.” We enjoy working in the field alongside our crew; they appreciate that and our clients appreciate knowing we are out there too. Our company also employs and manages our own in-house carpentry crew. We really value that and it’s also very beneficial to our high quality control standards.

What is it like working with your brother every day?

That’s a question we’re often asked and makes us chuckle every time.

We’ve been working together since we were kids so it’s no big deal to us. I guess you can say we’ve had a lot of time to “grow-up” while we “grew” this business. We both know that, without a doubt, we can trust each other and depend on each other to do our jobs.

Tell us about some of the custom features incorporated into this particular home?

We always enjoy the challenge of any historic renovation. The plans for the renovation and addition were developed by Heather Wilson. This required the removal of the non-historic portion of the home, lifting and moving the remaining historic section from its original location on the site to allow for the new foundation and addition to be constructed. The exterior doors are all custom-made

by Stewart Brannen Millworks and we installed a metal roof with the old-school crimp system which gives the home a stunning look and creates a timeless appeal.

What inspired you to become an interior designer?

My dad is an architect and city planner. I’ve always felt I learned to see things through his lens. He and my mom took great care of our house and did additions and updates. That design aspect was always on my radar. I thought I would want to be an architect like him and went to architecture school. However, when I got to school, I started to recognize I was more interested in the interiors of a space. That education helped me transition into this side of the industry. I have a unique perspective because of that background in architecture.

Why is it important for homeowners to work with a designer?

There are three kinds of clients—the ones who like way too many things, the ones who just want you to agree with them, and the ones who don’t know what they like. It’s a process of listening. Designers have to present questions to clients that will help you gain valuable information. You have to know enough to ask the right questions.

As a designer, you have to help put order to their thoughts and then put together something that pulls their vision to life. We have to understand how a room should be set up spatially, how the space will be used, the people who will be living there, etc. We can also help them set up short-term and long-term plans to help give them a sense of confidence by taking it one room at a time.

How did you help these homeowners bring their vision to life?

I’ve been working with this client for about 12 years. This project was a renovation of their kitchen. It was small with a little breakfast nook, a den, and a porch off the kitchen. We absorbed the screened-in porch that wasn’t being used and created a larger den and breakfast area. We went with a bright and light look. What I love about these clients is that they aren’t afraid of color. The drapes have a raspberry red color, with a deep teal in the den. That scares some people, but we were careful in how we used the color. The design is very transitional so they won’t get tired of it.

Taking a Look at Waterproof Laminate When it comes to your home, it’s important to use products that not only speak to your style, but also products that fit your lifestyle and will be durable for years to come.

Floor Selection

One of the most important products you’ll select for your home is your flooring. Most areas in your home will have heavy foot traffic, so you want to choose something durable and low-maintenance.

One great option is a waterproof laminate.

Revamped Laminate

Revwood is an upgraded laminate that is now waterproof, kid proof, and pet proof. Laminate has always been one of the most resilient and durable floors when it comes to scratch resistance and resistance to indentation, however it wasn’t water resistant. If spills weren’t cleaned up, the floors would delaminate or the top layer would bubble up.

Waterproof

In order to make waterproof laminate, manufacturers have sealed all four edges of the planks, preventing water from being able to penetrate through the seams.

A NanoLock technology was also added to the top layer to protect it from water and allow the water to bead up for easier clean up. With this technology, water can sit on top of the floor for up to 48 hours before beginning to show damage.

Thicker and Quieter

Laminate has been made thicker to help make it quieter and more durable.

These floors used to be a six or eight millimeter thickness. New waterproof laminate is 10 to 12 millimeters thick which noticeably helps deaden sound.

It also has jewelry drawers so you can keep your accessories organized. In this closet, you also have a hidden ironing board that gets folded up into a drawer to maximize the space.

The Process:

When designing a custom closet, the first step is to establish dimensions of the space and where shelving and cabinetry will go. Then cabinet colors are selected, along with hardware finishes and styles, and door styles.

Homeowners also have accessory and other storage options to choose from, such as tie storage, pull out hampers, etc.

After completing a few commercial requests, Austin arrives at a home to install home security products. The Totality sales team has already helped the customer select a customized Ring system, and now it’s Austin’s job to install each product. Austin mounts a Ring video doorbell, multiple Ring floodlight cameras, and a Ring security system to help this customer feel “Totality Secure.”

Technicians Solomon and Darius partner up to install a new curbside pickup unit at a grocery store. This work involves the help of a scissor lift to run ethernet cable for stretches as long as 200 or 300 feet at a time.

9:00am Technicians arrive on their scheduled sites to handle highpriority customer requests. Lead technician Austin brings the network back online at a financial institution, then heads to Target to troubleshoot a malfunctioning point of sale system.

W

hen custom home builder John Frick of Level Building Projects purchased this lot he’d been eying for years, he already knew what his future home would look like. “When we were designing the home, there were several things that we wanted,” John recalls.

That list included taking advantage of the marsh views, a modern design with clean lines, an open floor plan for the kids, a chill room for John, and a bar. “I needed somewhere to house my fancy liquor that I don’t share with just anyone,” John laughs. Their plans also included a playroom for the Frick children.

With 15 years in the industry, John knew that he couldn’t do all of this on his own, so he called in his friend and interior designer Mary Welch Fox Stasik of Mary Welch Fox Design. The two will be co-hosting one of HGTV’s new shows airing August 19th at 8pm, Breaking Bland. “Melch is one of my best buds,” John says. “I dig 96 • CH+D • Summer 2021

her edgy style and we’re alike in a lot of ways, so it made sense for us to work together on my home.” The two actually worked on John’s home together before they were cast as co-hosts. “It was our first time working together and we were having a blast,” Melch says. “I asked the cameras to stop by while we were filming the sizzle and they loved John.”

Melch notes that working with John was a bit nerve-racking because not only was he a good friend, he was also in the home industry. “These are your people, your chosen family, and you want to do anything and everything in your power to make it the best experience it can possibly be,” she adds. But, construction is difficult and things always pop up. Luckily, since John was is in the industry, he was very understanding when things did arise. Together, he and Melch pushed some design boundaries.

“The Fricks also have killer styles of their own; Sarah has a chic boho style and John gravitates towards mid-century modern.”

Throughout the process, John brought on other industry professionals as well.

“I have been fortunate enough to work with some great vendors and suppliers, two of whom are Jennifer Freer with

Melcer Tile and Jessica Markley with Moluf’s,” he adds. “They are helpful to me and my clients by staying on top of communication, keeping up with orders, staying on budget, and making selections.”

For the plumbing fixtures, Melch and the Fricks knew exactly what they were looking for. Jessica Markley with Moluf’s came in to get those selections for them.

Jessica used several finishes throughout the home, but finds the space still remains

cohesive as you move from room to room.

“From the use of the more traditional polished chrome and nickel to the matte black and unlacquered brass, we were able to create the experience that the Fricks wanted to accomplish,” she explains.

Jessica also brought in a statement piece for the powder room that truly completed the space. “We had a concrete sink that runs the length of the powder room brought in from the UK that comple-

Adding On Another child drove these homeowners to add on to their I’On home they loved so they had more space for their growing family.

W

hen the Sidney’s found out they were expecting their fourth child, they had some ideas for how to make their current home in the I’On neighborhood of Mt. Pleasant work for their family of soon-to-be six. They wanted to add more living space on the first floor and another bedroom upstairs. With a plan to remodel the home, rather than move into something larger, they got to work.

Renovations can be challenging which is why it was so important for the Sidneys to assemble a great team.

After learning from friends about their positive experience with Curt Wegner of Curtis Daniel Homes, Sam and her husband knew he was the right person

to execute their vision. Together, they worked with Curt and Phil Clarke of Clarke Design Group to come up with plans. Once the plans were complete, it was time to put them in action.

The family temporarily moved so the team could work freely without disrupting their daily activities.

The renovation included converting the screen porch into a sunroom, moving the master bedroom to the rear of the house, and adding a fifth bedroom upstairs. In order to convert the porch, Curt worked with Atlantic Architectural Windows & Doors on a folding glass door and window that overlook the pool. When it came time to add the fifth bedroom, the team converted the existing master

bedroom, closets, and a portion of the master bath into two secondary bedrooms with a Jack and Jill bath in between them. To create the new master, Curt expanded an existing secondary bedroom over the new sunroom, creating a spacious new bedroom. The existing walkin closet became ‘his’ spacious new closet became ‘hers’.

The new master bath was created by eliminating a closet so an existing secondary bath would have room for a double vanity.

The existing tub was removed and replaced with a beautiful freestanding tub with a floor mounted filler. The existing master shower received new tile and the door was moved to the opposite wall so it could be accessed

“This plan minimizes the movement of walls and new plumbing runs,” Curt explains. “It was a very efficient redesign that accomplished the homeowner’s goals.” All together, renovations took about five months, which is a pretty typical timeline for a project of this scope.

Durable Deck When you live in the Lowcountry and have a deck, it’s crucial for that deck to be durable and ready to handle the heavy foot traffic and elements the Lowcountry climate brings.

F

or this Lowcountry homeowner, building a strong deck with the right color for the family to enjoy was of utmost importance.

Little did they know when they began this project, there would be a material shortage and increase in price. But they moved forward and completed their project with the help of Lowcountry professionals.

The process began by visiting the Decks and Docks Lumber Company showroom where the homeowner selected the colors and railing they wanted. Once the owner completed

their selection, Steven Kukulka of Decks and Docks visited their home.

Steven notes that because they got involved from the very beginning, they were able to minimize the waste on the job since they knew exactly what they needed, and delivered a finished product that was exactly what the homeowner wanted.

During the process, as with many home projects that have occurred over the past year, there were some challenges that came up. Steven mentions that Trex, and all composites, have become more challenging to get your hands on.

Sipping on the Porch With a well-made deck, these homeowners are able to enjoy outdoor living with a cool glass of lemonade, without fear their surfaces are getting damaged. Trex pros Tardiff Builders were the certified installers for this project.

“Shortages are due, in part, to raw material price increases and increases in demand,” he states. “With more people redoing their homes or expanding decks, folks are buying record amounts of Trex.” Decks and Docks’ solution? Quality Over Quantity On the hunt for quality, contemporary, cutting edge cabinetry, these Daniel Island dwellers collaborated with professional cabinet designers to achieve their design goals.

ach room in this Lowcountry house is unique and different from the next. Together, these rooms make up the pieces of a stunning, custom project. When the owners were in the process of building this home, they were very clear on their vision for the various cabinetry throughout.

They were looking for high-quality cabinetry that was sleek and modern.

They began the consult and design process. Since they already knew what they were looking for in terms of style, function, and budget, the process went smoothly. Once the selections were made, their cabinet makers sourced new materials and components to bring the design together. They used super matte, Nano technology Fenix finishes 106 • CH+D • Summer 2021

Fully integrated panels and surfaces across the kitchen, bar, and doorways helped achieve the clean lines the homeowners wanted.

There was a combination of the finishes above along with custom wood veneers, dyes, stains, and opaque finishes to make each space feel like its own—no two spaces are the same. Jay Miller, owner of HWC Custom Cabinetry, recalls his continued relationship with these homeowners and why it was beneficial for them to collaborate again. “I’ve had multiple projects with this builder and with these homeowners,” he recalls. “Each time we work together, we offer attention to detail,

experience with contemporary materials, and precision.” The HWC team utilized the latest tools, software, and CNC equipment to execute this project to the standards the homeowners held them to.

Inspiration for Jay comes from so many places starting with his passion to make things. “Cabinetry today has so many facets, materials, functional hardware, and finishes that there is a nearly unlimited collection,” he says. “It’s fun to work with our clients who want to create spaces that are functional and beautiful.” Jay also draws inspiration from his clients. “Our clients force me to look beyond what we know and learn more, and get better. They are demanding and we get to improve and grow as a result.”

During this project, Jay and his team had to integrate the faces of the 34 feet worth of cabinetry, concealed hinge passage doors, and wall paneling which proved to be a bit of a challenge they overcame. To ensure the clients got what they wanted, HWC sourced a wide range of materials for each room from different vendors. Daniel Island Dream Home Wanting to create a space they would raise their family in, these homeowners worked with a custom home builder and countertop supplier to create a top-notch space.

T

he process of building a custom home was new for these Daniel Island homeowners.

The couple was unsure of what they were getting themselves into, but were excited to embark on a new journey and design their dream home. With the help of architect Chris Caponigro and their builder, Nathan Delpino of Delpino Custom Homes, the couple began the process.

“Nathan was involved from day one,” notes the homeowner. “He was there for all the planning meetings and was phenomenal in bringing the plans to life.”

With two young kids, one of the priorities was making sure they were enjoying both the indoor and outdoor spaces equally, especially since we’re in the

Lowcountry. Another top priority was durable surfaces, so the team at Vitoria International was brought on board.

“We knew Vitoria’s natural stone was going to be the highlight of this build and we wanted to make sure we created spaces that showcased these materials,” Nathan explains. “We began working with Chris to create the indoor/outdoor living feel that the owners were looking for.” Three sets of Origin bi-fold doors were used to make the outdoor pool deck an extension of the main living room and dining room. A lot of focus was put on the pool deck and outdoor kitchen to make sure they were safe spaces for the kids.

“By creating the cat-walk around the pool, we were able to solve the safe-

ty concern for the kids while keeping the view unobstructed,” Nathan adds.

The natural stone Nathan mentioned was truly highlighted in the kitchen.

“The kitchen hood is wrapped in 3cm marble,” says Adriene Araujo of Vitoria International. “The customers wanted to carry the marble they used in the kitchen and scullery countertops on the wall and hood, so the full height backsplash is one piece of stone.” As a natural stone person at heart, Adriene was thrilled the owners wanted to use these surfaces throughout the home.

Marble was used in all of the bathrooms, soapstone for the fireplace, and quartzite for the outdoor kitchen.

“I love the beauty and richness of real stone,” she adds. “Some people might be afraid of the little ‘imperfections’,

Nathan and his team worked closely with local suppliers for various other materials throughout the home.

“We know and trust their expert opinions on specific materials that are best suited for our Lowcountry climate,” he proclaims. “We used many local artisans for metal work, trim work, and more. Several of the accent walls and custom-built areas you see throughout the home were handcrafted by our trim carpenter on site.” The artisans Nathan works with help create unique, one-of-akind features for his clients. Nathan notes that since there are so many great features in this home, it’s hard to choose his favorite. The master bedroom accent wall, cabana bathroom tile wall (see pg. 218), and rock climbing wall are just a few elements that made his favorites list.

Trust is a big factor that made this project a success. “Building a home is not a one day deal,” Adriene states.

“It’s a lengthy process that involves a lot of different people. In order for the project to run smoothly, we really need to rely on our partners.”

Nathan puts the same importance

on trust and partnership. “When you work with people you can trust, you know they have the same end goal in mind,” he says. “All of the local suppliers and subcontractors we work with take pride in their work and genuinely want to create a home that is both structurally sound and visually appealing.”

Because of the trust the homeowners had in their team, and the trust that Nathan, Adriene, and the other suppliers had in each other, this project came together seamlessly and resulted in a beautiful, well-designed and constructed home for the family to make memories in for years to come. ✴

A Family Affair After moving from the UK to start a family business, these homeowners settled down in Mt. Pleasant and created a stylish space for their children to grow up in.

E

ight years ago, Paul Tinkler and his wife Elizabeth moved to Charleston for Paul to join his father-in-law Steven Shell in business. “Steven has a great personality and design flair,” Paul notes. When the Tinklers moved to Charleston, they initially settled in Dunes West before moving to their current home to be closer to their store, Steven Shell Living; Paul can be at work in 10 minutes or less.

With two young children and years in the furniture and design business, designing their own home came fairly easily to Paul and Elizabeth.

Elizabeth had very specific ideas in mind, and because they know so many

vendors through the store, they were able to bring a lot of these ideas to life. Everything from the drapes and bedding to the sofa and accessories came from Steven Shell Living.

Throughout the process of designing their own home, Paul and Elizabeth were also able to find new vendors for the store they had been missing.

The design for the living room started with the sofa. “We wanted a sofa that would be big enough for everybody to sit on,” Paul proclaims.

The sideboard has been carried in the store for years and Elizabeth knew she wanted the statement piece.

“Everything surrounding it came from those two pieces.”

Color Play Elizabeth got outside her comfort zone in her office and played with color in a beautiful way. Green grasscloth wallpaper, a pink desk, and gold velvet chair pair together beautifully and give Elizabeth a bright, happy space to work in.

The goal was to keep everything light and airy. Elizabeth loves to start with a clean base of natural tones and whites, then add on from there. Pink is also a common color seen throughout the home. Steven designs pieces himself so the family incorporated some of those items as well; the master bed and some end tables being just a few of those pieces. Paul and Elizabeth also had some items custom designed from other factories they worked with.

Paul says. “But overall everything came together pretty well, though we are still waiting on a few pieces.”

The family moved into the home during the summer of 2020 so there were some unknowns and delays due to the pandemic, like with many homeowners. “We moved in without a sofa and a dining table,”

Flooring Vision Lowcountry flooring professionals collaborated with a custom home builder to select durable and stylish flooring options for this Kiawah River dwelling.

T

he Kiawah River community is situated along 20 miles of waterfront on Johns Island.

As the community continues to grow, more and more families are finding their forever homes and taking advantage of Lowcountry life. For this particular project, two Lowcountry companies joined forces again after collaborating on a previous project.

Elegant Flooring worked with Artisan Custom homes in the past and the positive experience the builder had with the flooring professionals led them to working together again. “Through immense work and communication, we have improved our processes of assisting in design and providing consistent relations to meet both builder and client needs,” explains Savannah Bonnette,

the Account Manager at Elegant Flooring. For this Kiawah River project, Elegant Flooring worked with Artisan Custom Homes to provide hardwoods, carpet, and tile throughout this home.

Each project that Elegant Flooring works on begins with an introduction meeting. In this instance, that included Joe Varbero and Jessica Russell of Artisan Custom Homes, as well as the new homeowners. That meeting naturally flowed into a selection meeting where they chose the products.

Savannah presented them with options based on what they were looking for.

The team ended up using an engineered oak hardwood, Catalina pebble tile, a hexagonal mosaic tile, and premium ivory carpet. These materials were

selected for the relatively easy maintenance; the tile and carpet need regular cleaning and the hardwoods will need to be cleaned with an NuOil Floor Cleaner. These choices were also cost effective and unique to the homeowners. Savannah notes that the carpet was probably the easiest choice the owners made. “They wanted something sturdy, yet soft, and neutral for their bedroom,” she says. “The backsplash design was a bit more complex, but that is to be expected.”

Once the decisions were made, Savannah placed the order for the materials and they got ready for installation. Tile goes in first, then the hardwoods, and then the carpet. Like with many projects, hiccups will arise, but Savannah says that’s why communication is so important. “Being consistent in communication with the builder, installers, and suppliers allowed us to handle those unforeseen circumstances.”

Full-Time Vacation These homeowners were eager to partner with the pros to build a retirement home that would function well for their day to day life and when their family visited.

T

he Biggerstaffs brought completed plans and designs to the table when they began meeting with contractors to build their retirement home.

They knew what they wanted and had a price point in mind.

Once they met their contractors, Tommy and Shelley Priester of Priester’s Custom Contracting, the Biggerstaffs were ready to move forward with building their dream home. These clients were looking for a change in style and wanted a home that they could live in for the rest of their lives. “They came from a traditional style home that they had lived in for years,” Tommy notes.

“They wanted to steer away from that and go for a more Lowcountry, ‘beachy’ kind of feel in their new home.”

Tommy and Shelley answered all of the soon-to-be homeowner’s questions and sent the client out with Marie Lindenmeyer of By Design Consulting, LLC to their trusted local vendors to pick out cabinetry, flooring, plumbing fixtures, lighting, windows, doors, and other materials.

The next step in this process was to get an accurate estimate that gave a true picture of what costs would be for their custom plans.

Priester’s Custom Contracting wants to make sure that their clients are fully informed from the beginning so that there are no major change orders along the way or at the end of their project. Once all pricing and contracts were finalized, they then went up to their water-front property in McClellanville, cleared the lot, and were ready to start building.

After having a girls’ weekend, Mrs. Biggerstaff recalls her friends commenting “let’s just stay here” instead of going out.

This home is a great place to relax and enjoy nature. “Looking out of all the doors and windows, is like looking into a painting,” the Biggerstaffs note. Therefore, it is no surprise the homeowners’ favorite feature of the house are the huge porches. “The views are spectacular, and the quality of the home is excellent.”

It took roughly nine months to complete this project, and the Biggerstaffs were very pleased with the result. “They like to call me and tell me how they feel like they’re on a vacation every day of the week,” Tommy recalls. Marrying Traditional Southern with Modern Coastal As an artist, this homeowner had a very particular vision of what she wanted her Lowcountry home to look like.

A

n artist had a vision of a Southern style home with shiplap and bright whites.

It was important for her to have a space that felt fresh and coastal, but still had a semblance of traditional design. With a color palette and some selections already made, it was time for the homeowner to finish the design of her home with custom touches that merged the old and the new.

The homeowner called on Logan Miller, lead designer at Jean’s Custom Workroom and Logan Elizabeth Designs, to help make selections to blend her modern coastal and traditional southern style. “It was important to bring in new things to make the space fresh while still staying true to who the client is,” Logan advises.

This dwelling, located on James Island, has views of the marsh. The design of the interior of the home was somewhat inspired by the views of the outside, and the spaces flow together with complementary colors. Similar shades of blue that matched the water outside can be seen throughout the space.

When Logan got involved, she assisted in selecting pieces to complement the sentimental items her clients were already using. She also brought in floral fabrics and chinoiserie décor pieces to blend traditional and contemporary Southern style.

“Creating custom upholstery can be time consuming, but is always worth it in the end when you receive the perfect fit,” Logan says. “For me it’s a dream because I can envision almost

anything and know our team will make it happen.”

Challenges are part of the process, Logan notes.

Blending selections the homeowner had already made prior to Logan’s arrival with some of her suggestions took some time, but together she and her client were able to find patterns the homeowner loved and worked well with the existing pieces.

A fun touch was added to the master bedroom. Since the homeowner is an artist herself, she and Logan worked to come up with a unique design element they could incorporate. They came up with an idea for a mural behind the bed. “It appears to be wallpaper, but it’s actually handpainted and can never be replicated,” Logan explains.

Weekend Getaway Cottage Ready to plant some roots in the Lowcountry, these homeowners decided a weekend getaway was the best first step, so they got to work dreaming up their Lowcountry cottage.

T

hese homeowners had always envisioned themselves in Charleston in a cozy cottage.

They dreamt up wrap-around porches, a den, a roomy bedroom and bathroom, and a dog run in the design.

They dreamed big. But as they began the process, they started to realize that maybe they didn’t need something so spacious and adjusted their plans as they reassessed their needs.

When approaching a project like this, most experts will recommend coming into it with an open mind and your own ideas. Then you work with a house plan designer or architect to design a home that works for you. The process should be fun, as it was for these owners.

With the help of residential building designer Jodi Crosby of Crosby Creations Home Designs, the cou126 • CH+D • Summer 2021

ple brought their country cottage to life. Located on the Toogoodoo River near Meggett, Jodi worked with the homeowners to design their house plans. The completed space ended up looking like a country cottage.

“Sure it looks shiny and new, but it could also be mistaken for a newly renovated 100 year old home,” Jodi says. “It just fits so nicely in its country setting.” The homeowners incorporated a Dutch door in the kitchen leading to the porch, an element that everyone loves. With a low foundation, porch railings were not necessary so the exterior remains open and airy.

In order to not have to install those porch railings, the grading around the home had to be adjusted. The final grading couldn’t be any higher than 30 inches. To achieve this, Jodi called

Country Cottage This cottage was complete with an open floor plan and beautiful features including shiplap walls and a gorgeous brick fireplace with a dark wood mantle to provide contrast.

Once the project was complete, like with many other projects, Jodi stayed in contact with her clients.

“Some projects take a little longer than others but in the end, the goal is still the same—to provide a design that meets their needs, wants, and budget,” she explains.

“This is our objective with each and every project. We’ll work with you until it’s what you want.” Jodi also recalls that many of their clients contact them after the project is complete and send pictures.

Create with Color Guests can have the best of both worlds while staying at this historic Charleston home that has been transformed into a modern Lowcountry getaway.

W

hen interior designer Melissa Hunter of MW Hunter Custom Interiors signed on to fabricate the window treatments and bed covers for this Charleston bed and breakfast, owners Marlena Parker and Stuart Gross were intrigued by her playful patterns and her ability to flawlessly tie them together. After finding out that Melissa was also a designer, the two asked her to help them see the project through to the finish line.

With the construction of the space completed by the time Melissa came on board, she was able to breathe life

into the neutral color palette that had already been established through the walls, cabinets, and tiles. She focused on windows, bedding, side chairs, and tables as instruments for implementing pattern and color.

The trio sat down and got to work making their vision a reality.

Knowing that the owners wanted a lot of color, Melissa presented them with various fabric combinations that would stand on their own in each space, but could also easily interact with each other. “I wanted to create that wow factor, but I also wanted it to have that flow and continuity about it,” Melissa said.

Go With the Flow Melissa wanted each room to be unique while simultaneously complementing each other.

She used the same fabric in both the kitchen and living room, and scattered vibrant green and blues throughout the house.

She loves playing with different patterns, and this allowed her to tie every room together while still maintaining individual character. In order to create the desired flow between the living area and the kitchen, Melissa installed functioning roman shades in the kitchen made out of the same fabric used in the living room drapes.

Marlena and Stuart wanted natural lighting to illuminate the space, but not at the cost of privacy for their guests. They decided that the combination of functional drapes and sheers in most of the windows provided both of these important elements. In the living room, the drapes were adorned in a bold pattern that included the various colors seen throughout the house. Melissa also speaks fondly of the custom pillows made for the living area, stating they tied the palette for that room together perfectly.

Melissa and the owners were striving for a slightly feminine direction in what they call the “bridal suite,” and they accomplished it by using bright green fabric with large blooms of blue flowers on the functioning panels. They incorporated this design on the bed as well The bedside tables used in the room had been previously purchased by Marlena, so Melissa had fun searching for lamps to complement the size of the tables, as well as the rest of the room. The finishing touches were a subtle but stylish accent chair and as a dressing mirror that helped the room appear larger.

For the bathroom window, Melissa included a simple woven wood shade that “brings a bit of the Lowcountry inside.” Handpicked art pieces were placed throughout the house by Marlena and Stuart, showcasing a bit of who the owners are and where they’ve been.✴ For more information, call MW Hunter Custom Interiors at (843) 556-4939 or visit mwhinteriordesign.com.

A Lowcountry Beach House

New York Times Best-Selling author Mary Alice Monroe welcomed us into her beach house. Most notably known for her series, The Beach House, the author sits down to discuss her travels, her environmentalism, writing her first novel, and what her readers can look forward to in the future.

ary Alice Monroe is among the ranks of Pat Conroy, Dorothea Benton Frank, and Anne Rivers Siddons. When you hear her name, you are likely transported to the beach, as this is where many of her novels are set. Her most notable series, The Beach House, earned her a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie adaptation brought to life with the help of South Carolina native actress Andie MacDowell. As an author myself, of course in a different medium, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to sit down with Mary Alice and talk about her writing process, her work with the turtles, her passion for travel, and how she approached the design of her Lowcountry home. Be prepared to add some new books to your list—after hearing Mary Alice’s story you’re going to want to read each book she mentions.

“Markus’s family has been here since the Mayflower; they were signers of the Declaration of Independence,” Mary Alice notes. “There’s a lot of history in both of our families.” It was important to incorporate those family heirlooms they had acquired over the years, however with hurricanes prevalent in the Lowcountry, Mary Alice didn’t want family heirlooms destroyed if a storm did come through.

Deciding where they would buy a house wasn’t a hard decision for Mary Alice and Markus. It was always Isle of Palms. They wanted to be on an island and when Mary Alice saw their house when it was being built, she knew it was theirs. “I knew enough about flooding and rising waters, and this house is actually one of the highest lots on the island,” she explains.

When they purchased the house, it also had a breathtaking view of the intercoastal.

Mary Alice has used a combination of some family pieces and some fresh pieces that she selected specifically for this home. Some of the family heirlooms include the Chippendale furniture in the living room which hailed from Markus’ ancestor Governor Robert Livingston. Other family pieces include the Sheraton case and Belter chairs in the living room. The antique chairs in the dining room are 18th century pieces from New York.

Mary Alice has always loved Isle of Palms, ever since she and her family first visited. She and her husband Markus visited the Lowcountry nearly every year with their kids Claire, Gretta, and Zachary in tow. The couple knew if they ever had the opportunity to move here, they would take it. Markus was offered a position at MUSC in child psychiatry and that was it. It was 1999 when they made the move.

History and Japanese language (more on that later), Mary Alice has a lot of Japanese art including woodblock prints and porcelains in particular.

“Among my prized possessions are the sets of porcelain china my husband’s great grandfather, Admiral Wood, brought back from Japan.”

Though she loves the antiques and special items she has collected, Mary Alice demands cushy sofas and functional furniture so her guests can relax and have fun visiting, she notes. “This is a house that is lived in.”

The beachy colors of South Carolina have also presented themselves in Mary Alice’s home. In the kitchen and dining room, you’ll see a great deal of blue. In other areas of the home, there are shades of sand, green, and some yellows. Her daughter Claire is the designer behind Delancey Interiors and she helped her mom design the home. Claire guided Mary Alice to those colors—the softer ocean blue palette inspires Mary Alice’s books so it only made sense to include it in her home. Farrow and Ball “Pointing” is used in many areas throughout the home. Mary Alice found a Clarence House fabric she loved and it inspired the basic color scheme. Claire also wanted to support local vendors such as Urban Electric and Lulie Wallace in the design of her parents’ home.

Not only do Mary Alice’s furnishings have special meaning, but so do the artwork and books seen. “I feel at home with my art and furniture because they mean something,” Mary Alice adds. Her collection contains books signed by her author friends, gifts from people, and treasured first editions. Among her art collection are pieces by friends and local CH+D • Summer 2021 • 135

Mary Alice’s sister, Marguerite Martino, is also a prevalent artist in her home. “Like my character Lovie in The Beach House, I like to think I’m surrounded by friends,” she smiles.

The home has evolved over the years as Mary Alice’s family has evolved. When the kids were living at home, Mary Alice’s office was one of the smaller bedrooms. It’s always been a rule in their home that she has a designated room for her work, because you can’t do your craft where there’s lots of noise and distractions—and raising three kids is noisy.

In an old house, Mary Alice once called her friend Nora Roberts crying because she was so stressed out. She had two books due and things to do with the kids and she just couldn’t take anymore. Nora said, “Mary

Alice, put a sign on your door that says ‘Is it blood or fire? If not, go away.’” Mary Alice knew she needed that respect for her space and she used that sign in this house as well.

Now that her children are grown up, Mary Alice converted a room upstairs into a large office. The space has a private patio, lots of built-ins for her books, and plenty of room for her to spread out while she works. “My dogs curl up at my feet as I write,” she adds.

The kitchen is also a space that has been redone a few times; a favorite addition being the banquette they use on a daily basis. “I’m redoing the kitchen again to accommodate our growing family,” Mary Alice explains. “The kitchen is the heart of the home so I’m expanding it, putting in two farm sinks, adding more fridge space, and an island just for prep.”

When Mary Alice’s children were young, she grew herbs and vegetables in a raised garden. While she was writing The Butterfly’s Daughter, she created a butterfly garden. When the children moved out and the number of dogs increased, Mary Alice needed more space for pets.

Mary Alice’s daughter Gretta lives on Sullivan’s Island, so Mary Alice’s home has become a gathering place for the family. The grandkids vacation at the home and will grow up there just as their parents did. “Only a storm will chase me from this house,” Mary Alice says. “This is my

‘Primrose Cottage’ and like the one in The Beach House, my house carries many happy memories. I hope it will endure so I can pass down the house’s legacy of hospitality to the next generation.”

Mary Alice had felt so drawn to the Lowcountry every time she came and her commitment to our environment has only grown over the years. Moving here was the best decision for her and her family. She recalls sharing her love of the Lowcountry with one of her colleagues and friends, the late Pat Conroy. Mary Alice had a party at her house one evening and Pat was in

attendance. “He walked up to me and said ‘Mary Alice, you sure you weren’t born here?’ and I said ‘In another life.’”

A Writer’s Education

Mary Alice always knew she loved to write, but it wasn’t until she was in third grade when her teacher Mrs. Crawford asked her if she wanted to be a writer when she grew up that she realized writing was actually a career.

The young Mary Alice was stunned. “I remember asking ‘Is that really a job?’”

Mary Alice had been writing stories for as long as she could remember so it just clicked. From that moment on, Mary Alice knew she would be a writer.

Too shy to share her creative writing, Mary Alice enrolled in journalism school at Northwestern University. She started school but quickly discovered that wasn’t the path she wanted to take. At that time, Mary Alice was living in Chicago and the Encyclopedia Britannica was working on their newest release. “It was a real coup to get a job there because it was a mecca for researchers and writers,” Mary Alice adds. But she did. “I started as a lowly assistant and worked my way up to assistant to the general editor.” That role gave Mary Alice the opportunity to correspond with some great minds and taught her more than she could have imagined.

Kon’nichiwa from Japan

Mary Alice’s journey at the encyclopedia would come to an end when her husband got an itch to go to Japan. Markus had always been interested in the country but Mary Alice had no idea what she was getting herself into. “When we arrived I just felt like I had come home,” she notes. At the time, she was just 21 years old. Their time in Japan led Mary Alice to change her entire trajectory upon returning to the United States. Mary Alice and Markus returned and moved to New Jersey where Markus began medical school and Mary Alice began her studies in Japanese at Seton Hall University. She wrapped up her time at Seton Hall with undergraduate and graduate degrees and was certified bilingual. While in graduate school, Mary Alice began writing her first book; interestingly enough a Japanese historical novel.

Babies and Books

When Mary Alice and Markus were expecting their third child Mary Alice was put on bed rest. She had to lay completely flat from July until October when her son was born. During that time, Markus took the television out of the bedroom. “He said to me, ‘As long as I’ve known you, you’ve wanted to write a novel but you didn’t have the time.’ I picked up a yellow pad and a pen and began writing.” Mary Alice always says she gave birth to a baby and a book.

Over the next few years, Mary Alice joined a writing group and made great friends with the members. Nora Roberts brought her into that group and they are still close to this day. The book she wrote while pregnant with her son was published and she hasn’t looked back since. “I had this moment of clarity and I knew, for sure, that this was what I was meant to do.”

Mary Alice recalls the feeling of holding the book in her hands for the first time. “You work on it for months and envision what it might look like. You open the box and hold it and it just affirms everything you’ve worked on.”

Unbeknownst to Mary Alice at the time, her Beach House series would become her big claim to fame. This was meant to be a single book but the response was so great it just continued. After being

involved in the opening of the sea turtle hospital at the aquarium, it was clear to Mary Alice that she should continue this story with the Rutledge family in The Beach House. So Big Mama, one of the sea turtles from the aquarium, is in the book. Still only supposed to be a sequel, Mary Alice kept getting more inspiration to continue the story. Whenever she had a story she wanted to tell about pelicans, shorebirds, or sea turtles, she brought the beloved Rutledge family back for her readers. “I had a mission to tell these stories, and the Rutledges became loved by a lot of readers,” Mary Alice explains. “And now in the latest novel , The Summer of Lost and Found, the characters are older and it’s focusing on the next generation.” Her job as an author, she notes, is to write each book so it can be read alone but as a standalone novel, succinctly re-introducing important characters.

When finished, she leaves it to the reader to decide if they want to go

back and read the entire series.

Readers usually do.

Mary Alice also has a variety of stand alone novels and smaller series that she’s written, including children’s books such as The Islanders series that takes place on Dewees Island. Each process for a new book starts with copious research on the species she chooses to write about to make sure there’s enough to sustain a novel.

This includes talking to experts and scouring through various academic research. Then she’ll spend time on location with the species for between six months and two years. When she dives back into another Beach House book she reads the series again.

“I don’t want to forget something, even the color of a character’s eyes,” Mary Alice adds. She also has style sheets and composition notebooks chock full of notes, research, and other data that she references when she begins writing. These notes are helpful

to Mary Alice so she can continue the character development throughout each of the novels, and so she can recall what was mentioned three books ago that she might need to reveal in the new book. This series is about the Rutledge family and Mary Alice feels very responsible to continue the series for her readers who come back each time a new one is released—people love the Rutledges.

Since beginning her career over 20 years ago, Mary Alice has become a New York Times best-selling author, which is a huge honor, and something she doesn’t take lightly.

“For me the NYT best-seller was like crossing the line to give myself the ability to say what I wanted to write,” Mary Alice begins. “I had a mission to make my books a force for good and make my readers aware of environmental issues, and more, how they could make a difference. My success allowed me to do that.”

The Road to Hallmark

16 years after the book came out, The Beach House was adapted for film as part of the Hallmark channel’s Hall of Fame. The story was brought to life by the help of Gaffney, South Carolina native actress Andie MacDowell who portrayed Lovie on screen.

Mary Alice recalls writing the role of Cara with Andie

MacDowell in mind. Then, it seemed, the stars were aligning. Mary Alice ran into Andie at an airport. “I didn’t want to approach her because it was late and we were all so tired,” she remembers. But then she stood next to her while waiting for luggage. Mary Alice decided to shoot her shot. “I introduced myself,” Mary Alice recalls. “I’m an author and I just wanted to let you know you were the inspiration for the heroine in my novel.” Andie asked what the book was and wrote it down, and told Mary Alice she would read it. After Mary Alice got her luggage, she was walking past the bookstore that used to be at the airport and saw the poster for her new book, including the back list with The Beach House.

A few weeks later, Andie contacted her and said she had seen the poster and read the book and wanted to make the movie. “It was serendipity at its best.”

Andie’s large role in the making of the film as executive producer allowed her to ensure they were staying true to the book.

Mary Alice and Andie spoke about the film quite a bit. Mary Alice wanted Andie to play Cara but she wrote the book nearly 20 years ago. Andie was older than Cara now, and wanted to play Lovie, so she did.

Mary Alice has been a part of the Isle of Palms/Sullivan's Island Turtle Team for over twenty years. There is a photo in her office taken by Robert Clark titled Joy. She notes that this is when she feels happiest

The team was also able to bring Chad Michael Murray, most recognized for his role as Lucas Scott on the CW drama One Tree Hill, on for the project. Chad played the role of Cara’s love interest Brett. Per Mary Alice, “He’s a Southern boy and he carried the role perfectly. He’s the nicest man in the world.”

While they began filming and getting sets designed, Mary Alice was able to stay with Andie. She was part of the first day of filming. That first day, they tackled the turtle scene. “I started to cry,” Mary Alice remarks. “You see your words coming to life and it was just incredible.”

Befriending the Turtles & Other Species

and like her truest self. You can see in her expression as she handles sea turtle hatchlings why Clark called the photo Joy. By the time Mary Alice joined the turtle team she had written five novels. At that point, she knew she wanted to write a book that would be beneficial to the sea turtles. It was 2000 and there was a lot of light disorientation and the shrimp boats didn’t yet have the turtle excluder devices on them.

The shrimpers were concerned about not catching enough and losing money. Mary Alice says that it was their goal to show the shrimpers that the extra precaution for the turtles wouldn’t harm them. They eventually understood and have been using the excluder devices on the boats ever since. “I was so grateful so I wrote a book about the shrimpers to show how they were heroes as well,” Mary Alice adds.

This experience changed the way that Mary Alice wrote novels. She was determined to write about conservation and environmental issues that residents of the Lowcountry were facing everyday. “I wrote my plot, my themes, and the whole structure around what I learned from the

A Lowcountry Beach House The Climax

In April of 2018, Mary Alice Monroe reached the highlight of her career. It was on the night Mary Alice was inducted into the South Carolina Hall of Fame.

It was an honor for Mary Alice and one she shared with her friends and family.

That same night was also the premiere of the Hallmark Hall of Fame adaptation of her best-selling novel The Beach House. Mary Alice gave her induction speech and then went to watch the viewing of her movie adaptation at her friend Cassandra King Conroy’s home.

Per Mary Alice, she was sitting in her late friend Pat Conroy’s comfy, orange lounge chair with her daughters cuddled on either side of her. On a shelf below the television that was currently showing The Beach House, Mary Alice looked down and saw Pat’s award for his Hallmark Hall of Fame movie The Water is Wide. “Here I am watching my Hallmark Hall of Fame movie in Pat’s chair, looking at his award,” she smiles. “It was without a doubt, the highlight of my career.”

species,” she says. This approach helps her avoid dumping a bunch of information on her readers. Since she began this process, she has written 18 novels set against environmental issues and species. Mary Alice pushes for one each year.

The Beach House came out in 2002.

Nobody was talking about sea turtles and how to help them. Tourists didn’t know what a “Lights out for Sea Turtles” sign meant. Nobody knew what to do if they saw a nest hatching. Mary Alice thought if she could educate her readers and make them see the species through the eyes of her characters and share her passion, then they would truly care about the turtles. “If you care, you take care” has been her motto for the past 20 years as she’s continued her 142 • CH+D • Summer 2021

conservation work and written an entire Beach House series.

The Lowcountry wildlife was one of the big draws for Mary Alice. In addition to her work with the Turtle team, she also volunteered during the early days of the Avian Conservation Center: The Center for Birds of Prey in Awendaw. She would go on to write Skyward about facilities that cared for injured birds. During her time at Birds of Prey, Mary Alice cared for an eagle for about seven months. This great bird was released along the intercoastal.

It later perched on Mary Alice’s roof. “We just looked at each other and that connection goes beyond what anybody can explain.” The eagle built a nest on a hammock near Sullivan’s Island. Every December Mary Alice sees her soaring.

Mary Alice has new ideas for novels coursing through her veins at any given time. She believes she has found the next species she wants to focus on and will begin researching the animal, and start planning her work with them. And she’s thinking about straying away from the beach for a bit—still focusing on the Lowcountry but another environmental issue away from the sand. Mary Alice also has a Facebook group called Light One Candle where people can talk about how they can make a difference whether that be using non-plastic straws or helping the turtles on Isle of Palms. She’ll continue growing that page and encouraging others to get involved.

She states she learned a valuable lesson during the pandemic that she shared in her novel The Summer of Lost and Found.

“Live each day to the fullest,“ Monroe declares. With this in mind, she will continue writing, but she will also make time to spend with her children and grandbabies—and loving on her dogs. And of course, she will continue to serve on the Island Turtle Team she loves so dearly. 

What unique details did you incorporate into this home? With the stair tower in the front of the house being dominant, we felt that breaking up the shingle walls with panels would help divide the overall mass and give it a little more character to the home. We also wanted to design the home with large picture windows and sliders at the back to access the rear porch and pool.

Lastly, a second floor bonus room with a large balcony was designed for additional outdoor living space.

Describe some of the homeowner’s goals for the space. The main goal was to capture the views of the home the moment you stepped through the door. It was important that every major room, from the kitchen to the great room to the master bedroom, had that feeling of being connected to the outdoors.

Why was it beneficial for these homeowners to work with you?

We were able to help guide our client through the Architectural Review Board process by creating a home that fits within the guidelines but still addresses all the needs and expectations requested by the homeowner.

How did you overcome challenges that arose during the process? With this project being so close to the golf-course, it was important to create a home that had privacy from the adjacent tee-box, but also provided amazing views from the back of the home. We were very mindful when having our initial design meeting about those elements and coordinating that with our landscape architect.

What unique details did you incorporate into this home? The lot was long and narrow with great views of the marsh and Wando River. We wanted to integrate as much of the view into each room of the house, even though it wasn’t very wide.

We positioned the kitchen to overlook the dining and great room so all the spaces integrated the view.

Describe some of the homeowner’s goals for the space. The owners are a fun couple that love to entertain. It was important to create a nice, open floor plan that gracefully connected with the outdoor living.

Rick and Kate did their homework and provided me with photos of exteriors they liked. I translated their inspiration into a coastal cottage with timeless details and a lot of character.

What advice do you have for homeowners looking to work with an architect?

I recommend owners do their homework, research, and provide detailed information to their architect in the beginning. The more information you provide early on, the more cohesive the design will be. The most integrated designs evolve when you start with a blank canvas.

How did you overcome challenges that arose during the process? The lot size caused restrictions to get everything into the home that the owners wanted. We touched every setback of the lot so we had to get creative to integrate the guest/study closet in under the stairs. I welcome challenges in knowing that in the end, we’ll have a more interesting design.

What unique details did you incorporate into this home? The classical look and outdoor spaces make this home unique. It is very reflective of the individual taste of the homeowner—which is always our main goal. Space is personal, and our clients benefit from being an integral part of our design process.

Describe some of the homeowner’s goals for the space. These clients loved the outdoors and wanted an indoor/outdoor space. We achieved this by adding a large pocket slider connecting the dining area to the lounge and by using a two-sided fireplace connecting the lounge with the pool area. These clients also wanted a nautical theme which can be seen throughout the home with features including a barrel vault hallway, round windows, and shiplap accents.

Why was it beneficial for these homeowners to work with you?

Knowing the details of the building code is a large part of the key benefits in working with an architect. MHK is very involved in the planning process and this is always a great benefit to our clients. It is one thing to draw a vision, but it is another to be given permission from the city to build it. There are so many things to consider that clients are unaware of. Architecture is important to the longevity of our communities, so it is crucial to work with an experienced architect.

How did you overcome challenges that arose during the process? We always tell our clients that the hardest part of the process is finding the right lot and understanding what can be built upon it.

Working out the design is interactive and fun and overall a very enjoyable process.

We love working with our client’s vision and we are a very client-first firm.

What technology do you use?

MHK is a multi-faceted firm wherein our team members are as individual as our clients. Some of our team works traditionally with sketching, and others work on the latest 3D technology to produce photo-real renderings. Our clients get a true sense of what they will be getting before it is built.

What unique details did you incorporate into this home? This home features many of our typical energy saving and indoor air quality enhancing materials and systems.

What was really unique was the layout of the home itself. It’s set up in three zones essentially; a parent’s area with an owner’s suite and private screened porch, a public area which included both an open plan kitchen, dining, living room, and deck as well as a roomy upstairs for kids and guests, and a unique grandparents suite with a shared front entry and its own bedroom, living areas, and screened porch. These spaces accommodate the homeowner’s particular lifestyle and living arrangement.

Describe some of the homeowner’s goals for the space. A big goal for the homeowners was to be very involved in the design process. The husband is a professional designer and real estate investor and the wife is an interior designer.

We worked closely with them, as we do with all clients, to incorporate their ideas. In this case, they produced their own interior drawings, selected the materials, and brought in some of their own subcontractors and suppliers to help finish the home.

Why was it beneficial for these homeowners to work with you?

This home is unlike any other you could find in a plan book or in the marketplace; not only because of its one-of-a-kind design, but also because it sits on a very challenging lot in terms of shape, setbacks, and protection of the adjacent marsh. Plus, the owners had so many good ideas that we all really needed a central “clearing house” to evaluate and integrate them into the final design, and that was our job.

What unique details did you incorporate into this home? I was able to utilize the space on their lot in order to capture every available view of the Ravenel Bridge and the other stunning views that surround their home. I think the architectural millwork brings such a unique coastal feel, especially on the tower at the foyer.

Describe some of the homeowner’s goals for the space. Jamie and Caitlin were so great to work with. Their goals were straightforward from the start. All of the secondary bedrooms and main living spaces were to reside on the first floor, along with a raised infinity pool. The second floor was to be reserved as the owner’s retreat with his and hers walk-in closets, a study, a lounge, and a porch overlooking the views. The third level was for pure fun and entertainment with a deck, again capturing the spectacular views. Another objective was to have all the bedrooms be peaceful and to not have any traffic above them, so they’re strategically placed to accomplish this wish.

Why was it beneficial for these homeowners to work with you?

I specialize in water view lots and often take on projects with tricky or complex lots. This project was no exception.

How did you overcome challenges that arose during the process? We did have some challenges regarding the grading on this lot. There were homes on both sides that were already built and had established grading, so we needed to work closely with the landscape architect to mitigate the water runoff. Sometimes challenges may arise, but I always try to be proactive and not reactive. I think that helps my clients keep calm and confident through the design process.
