L ooking Forward

igating the world we live in today. Our annual outdoor living guide highlights over 50 projects of the dreamiest outdoor spaces created by Charleston’s own. In addition to the outdoor living guide, this issue also features our hurricane guide. We’ve talked to hurricane home experts of the Lowcountry to help inform you about what products are best to protect your dwelling during hurricane season. Each year, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra League pulls together a stunning renovation of a downtown home with the help of the Lowcountry’s top interior designers. This year, while the home never opened to the public, CH+D is bringing you exclusive, never before seen coverage of the home. Our architect’s gallery is another look behind the design. We chat with local architects and residential home designers about what inspires them and the importance of using their services on your next project. They show us into the homes they’ve crafted with careful care and attention to detail.

couldn’t write this letter without addressing the worldwide pandemic we’ve faced over the past few months. I am not a doctor and I am not an expert on this, after all, as you know by reading this, I’m the editor of a home and design magazine. But, I would like to start this letter by thanking you all for your continued support—for following us, picking up the magazine, and supporting small businesses like the companies you see featured within our pages. We are so grateful for all of you.

The two have not only continued to build their wine brand, but have also branched into designing a home line and Lydia has a cosmetic line. The pair invite us into their home to chat about their careers, the life they’ve built together, and the exciting things to come. Throughout this issue, I hope you find inspiration and joy in hearing stories of the human experience. Happy reading!

Story of a Successful Project

by The Audio Warehouse

Russ Pritchard, Owner of The Audio Warehouse

With close coordination between our lighting design specialist and the builder, we were able to conceal the Lutron motorized shades behind the crown in the kitchen and breakfast room. We specified and installed the Lutron Palladiom shades for the case openings and

doors, which offered a minimal mount and roller size. This eliminates distractions from the intended view while preserving the architectural esthetics. Our design tools have improved significantly with the latest shade technology and the new options for LED fixture technology. Now we are able to specify the proper color temperature and CRI (color rendering index) to promote colors and features previously not available from incandescent fixtures. Choices in fabric type also allow us to affect acoustics, manage UV damage and enhance privacy. Ultimately, planning is the key to any successful project. We encourage clients to contact us early in the design stages. By working closely with the design and build teams early in the design stages for your home or office, will ensure we are able to produce the most efficient and satisfying experience. After all is said and done, it’s the results that count!

arefully managing the relationship between natural and artificial light can improve the comfort and function of any space. In this project the goal was to keep the full view and openness of the large windows while simultaneously providing the ability to control the glare from the morning sun. The combination of the square 2-inch and 3-inch Element LED architectural fixtures evenly distributes lighting for task areas along with general illumination to highlight interior finishes. Lutron’s lighting control system allows us to automate dimming levels and shade position based on time of day or use of space.

Let the Light In Mike Townsend of Natural Home Lite chats with CH+D about the history of his company and how his team can make an impact on the natural light coming into your home.

Tell us about Natural Home Lite’s history and how you got to where you are today? In September of 2000, we were given the opportunity to take ownership of a small, family-operated remodeling company. In 2003 we were issued a General Contractors License and kept the company focused on high-end sunroom projects. We recognized that many of our clients were requesting options to brighten up other interior rooms. The search for a daylighting solution transformed our company. Today, Natural Home Lite is recognized as a residential skylight expert who specializes in transforming dark rooms to bright, happy, and healthy spaces.

What services do you offer Lowcountry homeowners? What makes you stand out amongst competitors? Natural Home Lite is a VELUX 5-Star Skylight Specialist that serves the Lowcountry from Summerville to Hilton Head. Our clients are offered solutions for existing skylight replacement projects, new cut skylight design-build projects, and two-hour SunTunnel daylighting installation services. We are a unique company because we specialize in VELUX Skylights and SunTunnel products. 58 • CH+D • Summer 2020

The Natural Home Lite team can provide daylighting expertise regarding high performance impact glass, sunlight control with solar blinds, fresh air venting skylight options that include VELUX active performance, and all with the advantage the 26 percent Federal Tax Credit.

How does your team make the process easier and stress free? What training do they receive prior to going out in the field? The first step in our process is to schedule a free in-home daylighting evaluation. After a detailed Q & A with the customer, we can identify end results and show them a library of before and after project photos that most closely reflects the project and their home. Most of the time, we can produce a quote on site and answer any work scope or budget questions. The NHL team is trained in best safety practices and is certified by the manufacturer in waterproofing and installation specifications. HE SAID / SHE SAID

Custom Building Trends

Story by Alli Steinke • Photography by Patrick Brickman

Ryan and Jenny Butler of SHELTER Custom-Built Living discuss their favorite trends in the custom building industry.

He Said: Ryan Said: The front door to your home can set the tone for the rest of the space. If you pay attention to the little things at the very first moment someone enters your home, it stands to reason that you will pay attention to those same types of details throughout the interior.

Ryan Said: I grew up in a very ornate, traditional home and I am still drawn towards dark colors, wood furniture, rooms centered around a wood burning fireplace, and wood paneling.

Ryan Said: Commit to your own unique design style and be sure to invest in a professional interior design team. Whether you intend to move or stay, a thoughtful, well-executed design will always return dividends.

She Said: Favorite Exterior Detail

Traditional or Modern

Favorite Unique Touch

Jenny Said: Exterior staircase design is my favorite element. A well-crafted exterior staircase design using modern materials can be the architectural highlight of your home and can completely transform the look of your property.

Jenny Said: I love modern design. I am drawn to all aspects of this style— minimalism, neutral colors, clean design lines and environmentallyfriendly materials.

Jenny Said: Create a path for natural light with over-sized windows or a skylight in your custom home. Adding this unique feature not only helps light reach dim areas, but it also adds uniqueness to your custom home while increasing its value.

CRAFTED IN CHARLESTON

Custom Creations Will Smith is the man behind Lowcountry Iron & Woodworks. He started the company inspired by his passion for welding iron and creating unique products. His craftsmanship has allowed him to construct a variety of products from staircases, gates, and fences to handrails and window guards.

The Craftsman:

Will’s experience comes from years of working with fellow craftsmen on various projects. During this time, Will honed in on his skills and learned to work with materials outside of wood and iron.

His Process:

Story by Rachel Lolar • Photography by Patrick Brickman

Will’s process is straightforward and ensures that the project is perfect for the individual. Each job is different so it’s important to find and establish his clients’ desired look before the job is started. Once the preliminaries have been established, Will draws up the plans for the client to review and approve. He states that as long as it’s made with iron, he’ll make it.

His Philosophy:

“I want to make something that stands long after I’m gone,” Will states, and standing behind something that is made with quality work and care is important. Attention to detail and regular maintenance are Will’s priorities when it comes to his line of work. For more information, Lowcountry Iron & Woodworks at (803) 655-5653.

GREENHOUSE

Eco-Friendly State of Mind An important feature people might not think about when it comes to building green are the floors. Reclaimed hardwood floors are a great, sustainable option to look into. Reclaimed wood is not only an option for floors, but can also be used

in various places throughout the home such as wall paneling, countertops, tables, and more. By using a reclaimed wood, you are helping decrease the demand for newly sourced lumber, also helping curb deforestation. This is a renewable

resource and it reduces landfill waste and the environmental hazards used to manufacture a product. For more information, call Flooring Services at (843) 388-6872 or visit fslteam.com.

Relaxing Green

68 • CH+D • Summer 2020

Summer is here which means you will likely be spending more time in the pool, and in chlorine. Chlorine can produce chloramines and can’t kill all contaminants which can leave you at risk for skin irritation, red eyes, bacterial-borne illnesses, and hair discoloration. Rather than using less chlorine in your pool, which doesn’t offer adequate anti-bacterial protection, it is recommended that you install a Clear03 Ozone Generator and UV2 UV-C germicidal light. This bacteria fighting power combo known as the UltraClear system produces a hydroxyl radical

advanced oxidation process that breaks down nonliving waste and microorganisms that can survive in your pool, even which chlorine treatments. Heritage Pools, LLC can install this powerful UltraClear system and you can enjoy a healthier, cleaner, and more eco-friendly pool all summer long. Homeowners who chose the UltraClear system can also see big money savings as it reduces chlorine use up to 80%. For more information, call Heritage Pools, LLC at (843) 762-3417 or visit swimhere.com.

Modern Updates Fight the Elements

Story by Alli Steinke • Photography Provided by Decks & Docks

Our outdoor living spaces go through more wear and tear than many other places. They need to be built to stand against Mother Nature. Many homeowners in the Lowcountry enjoy docks in their backyard. These docks require expert care to ensure that they last for years. Modern technology has elongated the lives of docks and decks. Composite decking has a wood-grain texture with bullet proof shells. It also comes in a variety of colors. With its qualities, composite decking lasts for years and requires little to no maintenance. This decking is not only durable in our coastal climate, but it is also made of recycled plastic and re-purposed wood.

Clear Gutters, Protected Home Clogged gutters can cause multiple issues in your home; the biggest concern being water damage. Living in a hurricane prone environment for months out of the year, water damage is important for homeowners to prevent as much as possible. A gutter guard is maintenance free and clog free so homeowners don’t have to worry about clogged gutters causing damage to the roof, landscaping, or foundation. In addition to the guards protecting your home from damaging water, they also come in a multiple colors to match your home and help make home maintenance safer, as homeowners no longer have to climb up on a ladder to clean out the gutters. For more information, call Ultimate Gutter Guard at (843) 410-0645 or visit gutterscharleston.com.

LEARNING THE LINGO

Must-Know Real Estate Jargon Buying a house can be overwhelming if you don’t know the language. Check out the terms below to ensure that you are well informed throughout the process so you can make the best decision for your family.

CMA (Comparative Market Analysis)

Realtors run CMAs once a home is listed. This is a report of similar homes that have been sold in your area. It is used so that agents can determine an accurate list price for your house.

Escrow Money

When a home is in escrow, that means that the buyer has put an agreed upon amount of money down to hold the property. The money is held in the account until both the buyer and seller fulfill their obligations written out in the purchase agreement.

Contingencies

Conditions in the purchasing agreement that must be taken care of before the sale goes through. These can be things such as getting an inspector or waiting for the buyer to sell their own home before closing.

74 • CH+D • Summer 2020

Closing

The closing meeting at the attorney’s office will finalize the deal. The seller and buyer sign final documents and funds are distributed. Prior to closing inspections, CL100s, appraisals, lending approvals, setting up movers, and most other tasks are complete.

Mortgage Repayment Penalties

The bank may charge you penalties for paying off your mortgage early. These payments are meant to protect lenders from potential interest losses. Depending on your situation, banks may ask for three months worth of interest payments. For more information, call Island House Real Estate at (843) 847-1762 or visit islandhouserealestate.com.

(top) Staging your home is just one way to help increase interest for potential buyers. Just remember to keep it simple. (above) Tricia Peterson and Holly Buceti strive to assist homeowners from start to finish in the home buying process.

INDUSTRY PROFILES

Building Blocks

BUILDER:

John Goodwin COMPANY:

Stono Construction CREDENTIALS:

John began his career in home building in 1999. Prior to co-founding Stono Construction, he served as Director of Construction for a Fortune 500 home building corporation and a large privately held firm, in addition to other management roles within the industry. He has also served on the Board of Directors at Charleston Habitat for Humanity since 2015.

What is unique about this home? We were one of the first builders to use Henry Blueskin, a self-adhered air and vapor barrier membrane (home wrap), on a residential home built downtown, as well as alternating exposures on lap siding with woven corners. Because of those features and others, this home won the 2019 Carolopolis Award for new construction from the Preservation Society of Charleston.

How did you ensure that the homeowners were getting everything they wanted in a custom home? We must give credit here to Laura Altman at LFA Architecture, since she was actively involved in the project. We held weekly meetings with her, and our clients also attended some of those at certain intervals during the job. Since the owners were usually out of town, detailed meeting minutes with progress pictures were provided for all to review.

What advice do you have for homeowners wanting to build their own home? Do a significant amount of due diligence to make sure that building on the prospective lot will not result in unexpected costs. Many things can affect the total cost basis. Sub-soil conditions, flooding/FEMA implications, setbacks, easements, wetlands, clearing, drainage, utilities availability, HOA or BAR requirements to name a few. Spend time preparing. There is no substitute for proper planning, including design work up front to help reduce cost and time overruns during the construction phase. Make a detailed list of must-haves and do research on them. For more information, call Stono Construction at (843) 805-4141 or visit stonoconstruction.com.

Riverside Designers CREDENTIALS:

Jennifer earned her degree in Interior Design from the University of Georgia before returning to her native Charleston roots. As the owner and principal designer of Riverside Designers, she enjoys working on a wide variety of projects with a two-fold outcome— beautiful interiors and happy clients.

What was your initial consultation with these homeowners like? What style were they looking for? These clients split their time between Charleston and Canada, so they wanted a casual, beach vibe that they could enjoy with loved ones.

What technology do you use when designing? How often are you showing clients new designs as they change throughout the process? We only met with these clients a handful of times during the construction so technology was paramount in communication. Email, phone calls, FaceTime during site visits, and Keynote and Morpholio for room board presentations worked well throughout the process.

How did you work with the homeowners to overcome challenges that came along during the project? Making construction and furnishings selections for a new-construction home is always challenging, especially under deadline. Solutionsoriented communication is key for managing these challenges.

Why was it beneficial for these homeowners to work with an interior designer? These clients wanted to enjoy the process of building this home without the stress of design selections. They also wanted to arrive at a fully furnished home. Down to putting sheets on the beds and leaving a welcome basket of wine, we love delivering a full-service experience for our clients. Taking a Look at the Cost of

Exterior Products

The money you invest in the building materials for your custom dwelling will result in a well constructed home that can handle daily wear and tear.

Windows and Doors Installing high impact windows and doors is a sure way to protect your home against heavy winds often prevalent in the Lowcountry. Andersen impact glass windows and doors are hurricane rated for an optimal safeguard during hurricane season. These windows are also energy efficient. The coastal products are made of aluminum and vinyl, and with multiple lines, there are options for homeowners with a variety of tastes.

Decking IPE decking is a naturally rot resistant tropical hardwood. With the proper care, IPE decking can last up to 40 years so you will not have to worry about replacing it every couple of years due to wear and tear.

Cable Rail Stainless steel cable rail systems are another way to protect the home against the Lowcountry’s elements. These systems are built to last against the salty air and harsh coastal environment. 80 • CH+D • Summer 2020

Cable rail systems are made of materials that are highly resistant to corrosion, a huge benefit in our salty Lowcountry environment. They are also comprised of narrow horizontal cables which offers an incredible view of the environment, a must have with these gorgeous Lowcountry views.

Exterior Trim Elite Treated® exterior trim is primed and milled from dry pressure treated lumber. It is treated with a non-arsenic based preservative that is environmentally safe, dried, and re-manufactured to a consistent thickness and width. It is then primed with a quality exterior oil based primer that encapsulates the product on all six sides. The drying process helps minimize shrinkage, warping, twisting, and cupping. Oil based primers greatly increase durability and will prevent the absorption of additional water into the encapsulated wood. STORAGE SOLUTIONS

Storage Tips

Stacked for Simplicity

from

Southeast Kitchens The cozy kitchens found in many of Charleston’s historic homes can create unique challenges for homeowners to maximize the efficiency of space and make room for modern tools and gadgets. Fortunately, the designers at Southeast Kitchens have a few creative ideas up their sleeves.

The Setting:

This two-bedroom condo in the heart of downtown has soaring ceilings and a kitchen off the entry that opens into the main living and dining space. The owners wanted a modern take on cabinets to balance the rich pine floors, original marble fireplace, and elegant trim work.

Custom Pull Outs

The Solution:

U-shaped kitchens are particularly tricky with their tight corners and overlapping workspaces. Inset cabinets with flush fronts offer a beautiful, clean look, but also reduce door widths to further compound space constraints. To improve everyday access to cooking utensils and supplies, full-height pullouts flanking the built-in range were added. These small cabinets are a great way to optimize narrow spaces without using fillers. To make efficient use of corners, the carousels in a lazy Susan are the go-to solution for this designer. Omega Cabinetry offers independently rotating, plywood trays, each mounted on its own shelf so there’s no center pole to get in the way. For additional storage and extra counter space in this layout, base cabinets were wrapped around all sides of the peninsula. The shallow cabinets allow easy access to platers and glass cookware that might otherwise get buried in a standard depth unit. The continuation of the inset door panels around the island provides a cohesive look that beautifully ties this kitchen together. For more information, call Southeast Kitchens at (843) 795-8809 or visit sekitchens.com.

PRO ON THE GO

A Day in the Life of Garage Experts Follow along as we get a behind the scenes look into the daily life of the professionals at Precision Garage Door Service.

The next step to install the system is to ensure smooth door operation. He runs the door manually up and down to make sure that there is proper spacing between the rails. The springs on the rollers and hinges are lubricated so the door travels smoothly and quietly when opening and closing. Matt then moves on installing the exterior weather seal. The vinyl weather seal is cut to the appropriate lengths and attached to the framing, creating a seal for the door. Matt caulks the vinyl to the framing for extra precaution so the weather seal is moisture tight.

6:45am

10:00am

12:00pm

Matt Bonham, one of the lead installers at Precision begins his day bright and early. He reviews his schedule to see what installs he has and locates the parts he’ll need. He double checks to see if there are any special requests on the work order, straps everything into the truck, and heads to his first appointment.

By now the panels and rails have been assembled. He first attaches the rails to the framing and stacks the panels in the door opening. Then, he ensures that the panels are level and appropriately spaced between the rails. The next step is to install the spring system. Matt sets the system into place and secures it to the framing and rails. Once he sets the cable tension he winds the springs using a surewinder for safety. After Matt installs the spring system, tension is applied to test the balance of the door and minor adjustments are made to ensure proper balance.

An hour later, Matt has finished the installation of the garage door and moves on to the install of the door opener. He attaches brackets above the door and hangs the opener with an angle iron. The safety sensors and wall buttons are wired up, the opener gets connected to the door, and the remotes and keypad are programmed.

8:00am Once Matt arrives at the job, he does a site check. He walks through the garage to ensure sufficient work space, confirms the measurements of the door opening, and sets up his workspace to start the install. Once his protective gear is on, Matt begins the removal of the existing door.

84 • CH+D • Summer 2020

1:00pm Matt has finished installing the garage door and the opener. He runs the door up and down with the homeowner to demonstrate the smooth and proper operation of their new door. Matt explains the safety features of the door and the opener and reviews maintenance requirements. Once the site is all cleaned up, Matt takes pictures of the finished product.

2:30pm Matt returns to the office to unload the debris from the install and organize his truck for the next day’s work. He uploads the photos he took to the tablet so they can show prospective clients examples of their work. Matt catches up on emails he missed while he was in the field. Multi-Faceted Support Appreciation for the community that has supported them over the years has motivated the Carpet Baggers Carpet One team to support multiple organizations. Community involvement is at the core of who they are according to owner Dean Kelly. “We want to encourage people to help others,” Dean says. A couple of ways that Carpet Baggers helps others is in their support of Without Walls Ministry and the Lowcountry Special Olympics. Over the past five years, Carpet Baggers’ involvement with Without Walls Ministry has been in support of their Christmas Day event where they provide children in need with bikes, clothing, bibles, haircuts, and other items. Carpet Baggers works with Kickin’ Chicken to provide food and entertainment for the event.

For the past few years, Jay Miller and his team at HWC Custom Cabinetry have been working with Remember Those, an organization dedicated to supporting primarily Christian widows and orphans, mostly as a result of their parents being persecuted and martyred, around the world. The HWC crew has aided Remember Those both financially and physically through donations and their journeys overseas. They have gone to orphanages in Burma (Myanmar) built cabinets, beds, supported medical and dental trips, and when they aren’t there, they have sent specialty hardware and tools so that the organization can continue with

various projects and operations. Jay is also grateful to support Remember Those in prayer. The organization’s love of Jesus and passion for sharing his gospel with those who have little reason to hope inspired HWC to get involved. Remember Those ministers to all parts of the person—health, nutrition, medical, dental, work skills, and spirituality. In addition, the organization is fully underwritten by Bostic Law Firm so 100 percent of donations go to the ministry. Jay encourages others to get involved in any way they can. 24/7 Paradise Living in the Lowcountry allows the homeowner to enjoy the outdoors for the majority of the year. Add a custom pool to your waterfront property and get views beyond belief to enjoy while relaxing in the water no matter the time of day.

T

he humidity in the Lowcountry is no joke in the summer, so having a pool is a big positive for many homeowners. The landscape architect for this waterfront property connected the homeowner with the team at Aqua Blue Pools. “For 30 years we have earned the trust of numerous homeowners, local architects, landscape architects, and general contractors who are in the business of identifying quality construction,” explains Paul Straight of Aqua Blue Pools. Because of long-term relationships that are formed, Aqua Blue gets a lot of referrals, like with this project. This homeowner wanted an in-ground concrete pool and spa 98 • CH+D • Summer 2020

combination with a stone deck and automatic pool cover. Aqua Blue worked with the landscape architect to locate the best position for the pool, designed the area for the spa, integrated the automatic cover, and worked with the existing grades to terrace the deck. Because the lot is waterfront, there were variable soil conditions which required a lot of dewatering and site grading to ensure a proper installation. Since there was more work that went into stabilizing the soil before the installation could begin, this project took a bit longer but once the soil was in good condition, they began. “There is no one size fits all,” adds Paul.

Water Views Times Two (above) This pool not only has plenty of space to lounge in the water, but it’s also right on the marsh so those views can be enjoyed while sipping on some lemonade. (below) At night both the pool and the houses on the marsh light up creating a relaxing ambiance.

Lounge In Style The pool isn’t the only stylish feature in this outdoor oasis. The space also includes multiple lounge chairs and side tables for the homeowner to sit and make new summer memories.

“The best conditions occur when we have a well-informed customer who partners with a process-oriented company that has the best interests of all parties involved in the project.” Stabilizing the soil wasn’t the only challenge for the team to overcome during this installation. The stone decking needed reworking a couple of times due to settlement. “This required multiple visits to correct until the sub base was properly compacted,” expounds Paul. But the team’s knowledge and experience allowed them to properly solve the issue and continue the work that resulted in a pool the homeowners can enjoy for years to come. Once the installation is complete, the Aqua Blue service team goes to the house weekly to maintain cleanliness, balance chemistry, and check that the components are sufficient so they can help the homeowner keep the pool in good condition. ✴ For more information, call Aqua Blue Pools at (843) 767-7665 or visit aquabluepools.net.

Perfect Partnership Without sacrificing the homeowner’s dreams, Carpenters Restoration used creativity and methodical planning to make these cabinets a perfect fit.

D

rew Taylor of Carpenters Restoration met these homeowners after a friend recommended them as a custom cabinet shop they could trust. From then on, it was a match made in heaven. The homeowners had been frustrated with semi-custom services and felt that rather than working with them to help achieve their perfect look, they were met with constant “no’s” and having to sacrifice what they wanted. Drew, however, was able to turn no into yes and worked steadily with the homeowners to transform their ideas into reality using 3D rendering and inspiration photos. The homeowners were thrilled that he was able to take on their project because they felt that with his expertise, their dream cabinets fit perfectly into the space they had.

102 • CH+D • Summer 2020

Like with most, some challenges arose during this project. “There isn’t always a cookie cutter answer and sometimes we had to step back and find a solution that wasn’t necessarily as obvious,” Drew explains. However, thinking outside the box and using his creativity pair with a systematic work process, ensured that the customer’s experience is smooth and enjoyable no matter what may come up during the project. Drew also helped his clients consider cost vs. price. While some projects may seem like they cost a lot up front, it ends up saving the client money, as it lasts longer and doesn’t need to be repaired right away. He urged the customers to consider how much it will cost to fix something or repaint in the long-

Beautiful Beachfront Build This new construction home was built with longevity in mind for its New York homeowners ready to plant roots in Charleston.

T

hese New York transplants had their hearts set on this property for ten years. An amazing lot overlooking the Charleston Harbor drew them in and they knew it was worth the wait. When the lot finally became available, the couple jumped on the opportunity and began their hunt for the perfect team to build their dream home. “I got an email from the homeowners and went out to look at the lot,” explains Darryl Cobb of Cobb Architects. “It was an amazing property with a big row of trees running along the water and great views of the water and the Ravenel Bridge.” The home was also designed and

built on a double lot, so it feels very secluded. Darryl’s design nestled the house between the trees and kept the unparalleled views in sight. The couple then began their search for the builder and Structures Building Company fit the bill. This couple was still living in New York when they started the process so Structures' ability to design while their clients were away, and still keep in touch about decisions and changes, really made them stand out. Even though they were building from afar, this couple had a distinct style in mind. Structures walked them through the design process and helped pull pieces to-

gether such as the exterior colors, fixtures, and materials. It was crucial for the team to keep the homeowners involved every step of the way. The design of this home not only had to be built around the trees, but the homeowners also wanted to build with the future in mind. The team was able to terrace the grade to abide by flood elevations and keep the views uninterrupted. Structures also worked with the homeowners to create a comfortable and coastal home. This included countertops in a sandy color and a blue tile backsplash. In addition to wanting to create a coastal vibe throughout, it was also

space was a bit of concern but because of the curved edges, the Mirage was a great option.” Not only did the Mirage solve space concerns, but it also provided the homeowners with the backyard escape to unwind that they desired. Boasting 52 jets, two pumps, seven seats plus a lounger, and custom Coast Spa specs made up their dream spa. During the site visit, Sean also determined that his client’s existing deck was beginning to warp, crack, and rot due to age and heat. That meant IPE was the best option. The team knew that this job was going to take a strategic approach to allow for any unknowns that could pop up during construction. This led to a six phase process. “Phase 1 was a new frame for the upper deck and spa, phase 2 was the spa delivery, phase 3 was the stairs and lower deck frame, phase 4 was installing the IPE top deck, phase 5 was installing IPE stairs and lower deck, and finally, phase 6 was sanding and oiling the IPE to create an extra weather barrier and a polished final product,” Sean expounds. “The new deck spread 750 square feet, adding ample space for everyday use and entertainment.” Tackling different angles of the home was a bit of a challenge during installation, however, that was solved by sinking the spa into the deck and wrapping the surrounding deck area off the spa. They also had to ensure that they could still have access under the deck in order to secure the decking boards to the treated lumber frame. Sean credits the project, and overcoming the challenges, to the team he worked with—Guy C. Lee Building Materials, Coast Spas, and End2End Swim Spa Covers. With so many options to enhance your backyard experience, Sean advices any potential customers to do their research and find the partner for them who can remove project stress and bring your dream space to life. ✴ For more information, call Carolina Spa Company at (843) 936-3196 or visit carolinaspacompany.com.

Professionally Selected Surfaces With high expectations and lots of surfaces to cover, these homeowners enlisted expert help.

W

ith a decade plus history of surface fabrication and installation in the Charleston area, Jaime Justo of Granite by Design is a surface master. When he opened his shop a year and a half ago, he and his team were hopeful they could not only continue building relationships with the contractors they worked with, but also expand their customer base and work directly with homeowners. His experience, and the team’s work on past projects, led him to become trusted by builders and other subcontractors alike, 112 • CH+D • Summer 2020

which is how Granite by Design got involved in this job. “We’ve worked with Kevin Futch and his wife on previous homes and he referred us to Kenneth Godsil at Southern Coastal Custom Builders,” explains Jaime. The main focus when taking on a new project is understanding what the homeowner wants and needs for their surfaces. The Granite by Design team learns these things through a comprehensive consultation. “An initial consultation helps us direct clients to the right type of stone and narrow down their

options based on lifestyle preferences. We met with this couple at the shop and talked about stones, colors, pictures and finishing,” expounds Jaime. “After that we had a second meeting to present a sample for the Island edges and get the layout done. This client was very particular so multiple meetings ensured she got exactly what she wanted.” Jaime and his crew learned that Gabrielle Barnett really loved the kitchen in her previous house so she was hoping to recreate some of the finishes and designs in her Charleston house. After seeing inspiration photos, the Granite by Design team worked with her to find the perfect slabs. They made recommendations based on her family’s lifestyle and sourced the materials from a variety of suppliers. Each space has a different surface that Gabrielle, as a designer, picked for her family, from the stone to the colors and the finishes. Calacatta Quartz from out of down were used in the kitchen, White Carrara Honed from AGM Imports in the laundry room, Shadow Storm Honed from Vitoria International in the bathrooms, Calacatta Gold Quartz from Granite by Design in the kid’s bathroom, and Sequoia Leather from Pacific Shore Stones on the top of the dining table. Minimal maintenance was a top priority, especially in the kid’s areas such as the playroom and bathroom which is why quartz was used instead of marble.

Cohesive Palette A clean, fresh palette is achieved throughout the various spaces with the white surfaces in varying quartz and marble.

Like with most projects, there were a few hiccups during the process, but with teamwork and creative solutions, they finished the project with success and happy homeowners. When Gabrielle picked all the surfaces, the Granite by Design team got to work on the edges. “Once we had those, our biggest challenge was the island edges,” mentioned Jaime. “The island edges needed to have a 90 degree Ogee with lamination. To get this just right, we had to work on samples at first and then have them approved to start fabrication. The edges for this project were all made by hand, requiring lots of time and patience.” The collaboration between Kenny at Southern Coastal Builders, the Granite by Design team, and Gabrielle’s design choices, she created a home that had similar touches as her Los Angeles home as well as unique touches to her Charleston home for her family to make new memories. ✴ For more information, call Granite by (843) 327-1503 or visit granitebydesign.com.

eth Newman of Port City Elevator is in the business of making lives more convenient and to ensure that when life changes, access to all parts of the home doesn’t have to. That’s precisely what Newman did for his client whose mother was struggling with mobility issues. The homeowners thought ahead when it came to approaching Port City Elevator about the project. They

were looking to make their lives easier and more accessible now, and be prepared for when an elevator would become a vital means of getting around their home later in life. The elevator that best suited their needs and accommodated the limited space available was a Pneumatic Vacuum Elevator. Unlike traditional lifts that operate using cables or hydraulics, this new drive system runs entirely on air which also limits the need for space to accommodate machinery.

Not only did the elevator take roughly two to three days to install with minimal construction, but the lift was showcased beautifully in the home per the homeowners request. It’s the perfect balance between pleasing aesthetics and practically functionality while making best use of the space available. Part of what made this project so simple and easy was the fact that the homeowners planned ahead for their home and what their lives

Seth is always advising potential customers to think about the future when considering installing an elevator in the home. “If you’re building a new house, try to plan an elevator shaft that can be converted in the future,” Seth advises. “The future elevator shaft can be used as a closet until you need to install the elevator.” Whether you planned ahead or life unexpectedly called for an elevator, Seth states that construction and installation can be completed in about a week in most cases so your life can carry on, care-free and accessible. ✴ For more information, call Port City Elevator at (843) 729-1006 or visit portcityelevator.com.

Because we work with numerous companies, that special-

The goal at Atlantic Shield is to create a plan that is focused and designed for our individual customers, not one size fits all. “From first call to final plan delivery, our proprietary process delivers local expertise, peace of mind, and an ease of doing business never experienced when purchasing insurance,” Hill expounds. Because insurance is challenging for many people, they strive to uncomplicate the buying process. They also work diligently to retain all of our new clients, with an initiative known internally as 100

The goal is to never lose a client over a customer service issue and to leave no stone unturned as it relates to providing the best possible options we have available. “Our mission is to be indispensable to our clients by defining, meeting, and exceeding their expectations.” Atlantic Shield works closely with many of the local custom home builders to insure their homes during construction and upon completion. The team demonstrates how homeowners can get a return on their investment through building with higher quality materials and craftsmanship. They have found synergies to create a win-win-win situation for all parties involved. “Builders love that lower insurance pricing is associated with their higher end product, homeown-

ers love lower premiums for their better built homes, and we love being introduced to these future ideal clients through our builder relationship introductions,” mentions Hill. Offering a variety of insurance options allows Atlantic Shield to maximize the value they provide their clients. They are most helpful to successful households, seeking to consolidate all of their homeowners, flood, umbrella, automobile, watercraft and valuable articles policies with one professional advisor. Additional coverages offered include builder’s risk for under construction projects. Buckhannon’s team installed tile in all of the bathrooms with low maintenance options in mind. Over the years, they have determined that maintenance is often a top priority for homeowners. Wine and Unwind

Mondavi is a name that wine connoisseurs throughout the world recognize. Over 50 years ago, Robert Mondavi created a brand that would impact the wine world for years to come. Now, his grandson Rob, along with his wife Lydia, are carrying on the legacy and continuing to shine as prominent members of the industry.

a wine enthusiast myself, I’ve enjoyed a bottle or two of Mondavi wine. When I had the opportunity to meet Rob and Lydia I was thrilled; not only to hear the story of how they met and their life, but also to learn about their roles in the wine world and hopefully walk away with a new appreciation for the industry. After speaking to Lydia for close to a year and seeing pictures of their home, I was eager to sit down and chat with the couple about how they manage a life on the East and West coasts, with two kids, and a booming career. Our team arrived at their St. Helena abode and, I for one, instantly felt welcomed into their space. They have cultivated a waterfront home complete with nods to both coasts, their love for wine, and items from their home collection. Rob and Lydia invite our readers into their Lowcountry home and chat about their lives, careers, family, and what’s next on their journey. Join us on our tour of the Mondavi’s home, filled with a combination of Southern charm and Napa touches.

On Two Coasts Rob’s and Lydia’s lives started completely differently. He grew up on a vineyard in Napa where, until he was teenager, he felt kind of isolated. Then the vineyards became an outdoor park for he and his friends to hunt, fish, and hike. They befriended the guys working the fields which led him to experience different cuisine, culture, and friendship. The winery was a different experience; this was where Rob learned that he liked making connections with people and making them feel good. The winery was all about hospitality. Rob’s grandfather championed wine, food, and entertaining, developing a program called The Great Chefs. This program brought families and chef’s like George LeBlanc, Alice Waters, and Julia Child together and they would teach the art of wine and food to guests. Rob spent time in the kitchen with the chefs and helped with prepping, setting tables, buffing glasses, etc. 128 • CH+D • Summer 2020

When Rob went to college, he found himself drawn to people with similar passions for eating, drinking, and adventuring. Rob and his crew would throw rustic, and slightly Bacchanalian gatherings, complete with water cooler jugs full of young wine from the tanks. They would prepare their catch, abalone ceviche, roasted wild suckling pig, wild duck, and anything they could catch, hunt, or barter. These parties became events and they all relished in the fact that they were making others feel good. After Rob graduated, he made wine under Karen Culler at Vichon. He journeyed to Panama City after that and lived with his mother’s family, learning Spanish and interning at their business. It was during this time when Rob created the Napa Cigar Company. When he returned to the states, he continued selling cigars until 2000 when he joined

Robert Mondavi Winery as a sales manager in Atlanta. Lydia grew up in Atlanta. With a family history in Charleston, she spent summers and spring breaks enjoying beaches across the Lowcountry, including Hilton Head. History is ingrained in Lydia’s heritage; her ancestor Edward Rutledge signed the Declaration of Independence and his brother John helped write the Constitution. The simple things of life in the South such as catching lightning bugs, sitting on the porch swing, and enjoying a glass of lemonade on a hot summer day are the memories that stuck with Lydia the most during her childhood. When she wasn’t sipping on lemonade and catching bugs, Lydia was creating art pieces she could market to friends and neighbors. According to her mom, Anita Wilbanks, she had a strong desire to do

CH+D • Summer 2020 • 129

Wine and Unwind some ‘door to door’ selling. Her first pieces were handmade occasion cards of thumbprint mice and colorful drawings. Lydia would follow up with her method of ‘the repeat sell’ consisting of her new variety of thumbprint bunny cards. “Little did I know, her youthful drive and persistence would be one of her best qualities in her adult life,” adds Ms. Wilbanks. During breaks from her early business endeavors, Lydia spent time putting up corn and peaches, shelling beans and lady peas, and canning stewed tomatoes, okra, and blueberries. “Granddaddy and I would spend time in the garden and when the sun was about to set, it

was time for the fish to start biting so we threw in a line before heading in prior to nightfall,” Lydia recalls. Throughout her teen years and college, Lydia’s drive and ambition continued. She always had a job and she worked around her school schedule. She was determined to stay busy and follow her passions.

Set ‘Em Up Both landing in Atlanta and sharing mutual friends, Rob and Lydia were brought together by happenstance. Their friends were constantly telling them when they met, they would fall in love and get married. Neither of them were planning on meeting until fate intervened and

they crossed paths at a party. Rob knew immediately that he had just met “the one” but according to him, it took a little longer for Lydia to be sure. Lydia confirms that she was smitten when they first met, she just tried to play hard to get at first. Rob was drawn to her independence, keen mind for business, wit, humor, and love of fishing. These same qualities that drew him to her in the beginning still stand true 20 years later. Lydia’s smittenness towards Rob has just grown over the past two decades. “I still get butterflies,” she exclaims. Their courtship was quick once they met. They met in July, got engaged in February, and married in November. Turns out, their friends really did know best in this situation and they brought together a couple who were truly meant to be.

Dream On Rob always dreamt that he would return to his roots in sales or marketing.

With the help of a great mentor, he reentered the cellar and vine world, got back into winemaking. In 2014 he took over the reins as the lead winemaker in the Mondavi family. Rob started two businesses before he joined the family business so he’s always had an entrepreneurial spirit, as has Lydia. A passion for creating things led Lydia to crafting all sorts of things to sell to her friends when she was little. She has kept up with design and creating products for their Mondavi brand over the years.

Dynamic Duo 16 years ago Rob co-founded Folio Fine Wine Partners, a company that represents wines from around the world as well as wines from the Mondavis in Napa. He spent time developing the Spanish collection which included exploring the biggest wine regions in the country and meeting with winemakers there. Now, the majority of his time

is spent focusing on the family wines and vineyards. Rob also has two unique vineyards where he’s worked with his dad and sister. His father purchased a vineyard in the 90’s, and he and his sister later found Oso Vineyards ( just past Howell Mountain) which brought them closer together. In addition to Lydia’s role at the vineyard, she started her own cosmetic line using grape seed extract. After seeing a need for a skincare line that used natural ingredients for age protection, Lydia and her mother launched 29 Cosmetics. The brand is a grape seed anti-oxidant and age protecting cosmetic and skincare line, available exclusively at Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. The mother/daughter pair have launched a sub brand for Target for organic skincare and have recently licensed the brand for spas, resorts, and hotels. creating and developing products, brands, and designing spas and resort hotels. Lydia has also worked with spas all over the world including The Old Edwards Inn & Spa, Auberge Resorts, Rosewood Hotels, Hyatt Andaz, and more. Lydia’s expertise was used in The Dewberry Spa as well. The treatments at the spa were inspired by Lowcountry botanicals and marine extracts. Lydia worked closely with Jaimie and John Dewberry to design the spa at The Dewberry and to create the signature scent of the property, which includes the bath and body amenity line, and the signature candle that burns throughout. The scent is inspired by the native Southern Dewberry plant so they handcrafted the luxurious blend of full bodied berries, beautiful botanicals, and notes of warm woodsy spice. Together, Rob and Lydia have launched the Mondavi Home Collection. The pair was inspired by their shared passion for wine and sustainable living principles to create an assortment of authentic home accents. and entertaining. The collection features textiles influenced by wine country, handcrafted lighting, essentials for entertaining, and storage baskets. Their goal with the collection was to create items for the home where you can live well and make your guests feel like they never want to leave.

Life in Twos With two young boys and traveling between two coasts, the Mondavi’s lives can get pretty hectic. Travel is typically split between Rob and Lydia so one parent is home at a time. This works well between the couple so each of them have focused time with their children, forcing them, in a good way, to be more organized with life moving 100 miles an hour. “Fate enjoys throwing a wild card in the mix,” adds Rob. “We feel ready and under control and then if one of the boys gets sick or the dog rolls in something horrible.” Lydia also mentions how important it is for she and Rob to work as a team and prioritize the family. Over the years, they’ve gotten it down pat and support each other endlessly.

Life in Napa is heavily centered around the vineyard and winery. There are frequent guests who Rob and Lydia share their wines and story with. The boys are in school so Napa Valley is home. Napa’s sense of community provides a small town feel for the approximately 140,000 people who call it home, including the Mondavis. Beaufort is a magical getaway for the family. A waterfront property allows the boys to follow the tides; they’ve learned the best times to go fishing or shrimping. When the Mondavis decided to move back to Napa Valley in the early 2000s, they promised each other to keep ongoing roots in the South. With Lydia’s family history in Charleston, the Lowcountry was a given. It was important to them to share the best parts of their lives with their children and that meant teaching them what it meant to be Southern and a Vintner. 134 • CH+D • Summer 2020

Beachfront Living After searching in various areas, including Charleston and Savannah, the Mondavis found land in Beaufort and began building. This home is situated on the banks of Port Royal Sound where the Beaufort River meets the Atlantic Ocean. “The master bedroom is completely oceanfront and has a screen porch so it feels like you are on the water,” says Lydia. “Our home overlooks where my grandfather Y.T. Abernathy was stationed as a Marine at Parris Island and my great, great grandfathers guarded the coastal waters in Beaufort.” Both Rob and Lydia had must-have elements that they couldn’t live without in their Beaufort home. For Rob, a centrally located, open-concept kitchen connected to the great room, with a strong ventilation hood was necessary. As a family who spends lots of time in the kitchen, proper function was non-negotiable.

Climate controlled wine storage and a generator so they’re prepared during summer thunderstorms were also musts for Rob. Lydia’s top priority was creating a timeless, easy-to-live-in home for her children that was both comfortable and stylish. She wanted the home to combine Napa’s wine country with the casual elegance of the Lowcountry to reconnect her family to their South Carolina heritage. For their new construction home, the Mondavis worked with Allen Patterson Residential and Reu Architects. Lydia worked with Caroline Reu Rolader to design each aspect of the home, using her experience with spa and resort design to bring her family home together. The two worked over a long weekend and sketched out the house while sitting on the dock with Maker’s Mark on the rocks. Lydia recalls a storm brewing over the water and getting stuck out on the dock until it blew over. Lydia laughs, “I knew we should have brought the entire bottle of bourbon out with us.” Family heirlooms from both sides are showcased throughout the home that Lydia describes as a ‘modern expression of old world craftsmanship’. Building their home was a plus for Rob and Lydia because they could work with

their builder and architect to create their dream home from the start. Now, that’s not to say there weren’t challenges. Building a comfortable living plan on a narrow lot proved to be more difficult than expected. The couple didn’t want a huge house but needed something that would be efficient and well laid out with spaces for just the kids, and for the whole family to gather. Lydia and Caroline collaborated with the builder to create a space that would meet their goals. The teamwork led to a five bedroom, five bathroom home, under 3,000 square feet, on less than a 60 foot wide lot.

Rob notes. Uncle Peter agreed. “If you actually look at the redwood you can see that each piece is intact,” Rob continues. “You can see where they were banded and when the weather changes, you can smell the wine breathing in the wood. It is more than antique wood, it is a reminder that one must seek out new opportunities, be calculated, yet take risks to move ahead.” Their builder, Allen Patterson, custom built the sliding barn door as well as the fireplace mantel and wood beams on site. “When the red wine stained wood arrived, the yellow jackets swarmed to the wine on the wood,” remembers Allen.

Both Lydia and Rob invested time and love to make the home a space that they, and their boys, could enjoy for years down the line. A custom white wine stain for the reclaimed heart pine floors combines warmth and richness that offers a cool, refreshing feel on bare feet. The sliding barn door and beams in the great room are pieces of the Mondavi heritage, a gift from Rob’s great uncle Peter. They are reclaimed tank staves from the 1860’s. “I remembered that my Uncle Peter had dismantled, saved, and hidden the original redwood tanks and I had hoped that he might be willing to share a few precious pieces for our family to bring a piece of our history to the South,”

The sliding barn door that covers the TV, fireplace on the waterfront screened porch, and the butler’s pantry with the screened porch connector to the guest carriage house are some of Lydia’s favorite features. Additional space to keep outdoor items is seen in the mudroom. “We’re constantly dragging beach chairs, fishing rods and toys, and we didn’t want to nick the corners of trim detail or crown moldings in the house,” says Lydia, whose mother, interior decorator Anita Wilbanks, used Benjamin Moore’s super-high-gloss and eco-friendly paint on trims and interior doors. “My mother chose soft neutral colors based on looking at the ocean

(opposite above) Authentic Reclaimed Flooring and the Mondavis worked together to create a custom white wine blend stain for the reclaimed heart pine floors. The floors were reclaimed from the Old Crow Bourbon Distillery and stained with the Mondavi’s Choice white wine stain. (above) Rob loves the master bathroom with the Kohler steam shower and an oversized tub overlooking the water.

during low tide, so we have soft blues and greens representing the oyster shells glistening in the water and Spanish moss hanging over the water and wet sand,” adds Lydia. Rob’s favorites include their private dock and, of course, the kitchen. Rob is a passionate cook. As a child, he recalls spending time in the kitchen at the winery learning to chop vegetables and make stock with family guest Chef Julia Child, along with other celebrity chefs like Wolfgang Puck. Rob fell in love with cooking at an early age so he had very specific ideas on the kitchen, including a powerful ventilation/exhaust system for the Thermador six burner range. The kitchen also includes natural quartz countertops, a Silestone by Cosentino kitchen island, and hand-cut and glazed Ann Sacks terracotta tiles that were crafted in Morocco and laid in a herringbone pattern for the backsplash.

Lydia learned to love baking from her grandmother Stella so she’s a frequent user of the oven. “I love to be in the kitchen with my boys baking cakes, pies, and cobblers,” she mentions. “One of Rob’s favorites is Stella’s coconut cake which we had Chef Sam Godfrey of Perfect Endings re-create for our wedding cake.” The family spends most of the time in the kitchen and great room. This space is designed as one area where French doors open onto a waterfront porch. Large floor-to-ceiling windows frame the water views beyond. “We love the swing bed on the porch for afternoon naps and enjoying popsicles with the kids,” they add with a smile. “We just flow back and forth —you can’t tell if you’re outside or inside,” Lydia continues. “This is one of the most pristine estuaries in all of America,” Rob adds about the waterfront setting. “We get red fish, speckled trout, as well as shrimp and stone crab.”

Throughout the design process, Lydia also spent lots of time in some of her favorite places to find special items for both homes. “I love The Field Shop at The Dewberry Hotel to browse one-ofa-kind gifts,” she adds. “Scout Market in Beaufort is always great and my favorite place is Grayco Hardware, also in Beaufort, is where I find household supplies and unique home items.” Lydia recalls spending spring breaks and summers on her favorite beaches in the Lowcountry like Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island, and Hilton Head. It’s a history and lifestyle that she was eager to share with her boys. “Rob and I wanted them to really experience the culture of the South,” she says. “Everything from fireflies and thunderstorms rolling in, to running on the beach and digging for clams and catching shrimp and redfish. These are things you can’t experience in Napa Valley.” CH+D • Summer 2020 • 137

Wine and Unwind Laurenz Gruner Veltliner, or our Animo Sauvignon Blanc or even Emblem Chardonnay with fresh shrimp and the bounty of our coastal and inner coastal waters. Yet one wine that is best with everything? Champagne! Champagne is the most versatile and delicious wine and can be served with anything—Indian food, steaks, fried chicken, and even potato chips. Our favorite is Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve.

Lessons from Lydia I love red wines but in the Lowcountry, and especially in the spring and summer, I love Animo Sauvignon Blanc. I really enjoy Casamatta as well, which is an Italian white wine by Bibi Graetz. It has beautiful crisp apple notes with aromas of lemon zest, excellent with so many local Lowcountry dishes. The Perfect Pair For special occasions we like to designate special wine. This really means creating a unique meal and finding a bottle of wine that will make our guests and friends feel special. Simple touches, like flowers and a well thought out bottle of wine, really make a difference when entertaining. Of course we also love including our Rutledge & Vine Oakville Cabernet.

Rob and Lydia host many of their friends and family on their side porch leading to the guest house. They meet for Bloody Mary’s in the mornings, or a glass of wine in the afternoons.

Pairings by the Pros Take it from Rob and Lydia, they know. Read on to hear straight from the experts what wine to pair with what food and what occasion. Rob’s Review Wine pairings are an amazing point of excitement and passion. On one hand there are classic pairings that just taste great together such as lamb, or espresso rubbed prime rib, served with big Napa Valley Cabernet or fresh salmon with butter mashed potatoes and delicious Chardonnay. Yet as a winemaker, I want to encourage people to go beyond the ‘white for fish, red for meat’ mentality. I want to encourage the enjoyment of wine. So if you are a 138 • CH+D • Summer 2020

Chardonnay only drinker, don’t be bashful about enjoying that with a steak. Although there are great pairings, find what you love and embrace it. For me, I enjoy eating and drinking with the seasons in mind. In the winter, we tend to enjoy more hearty dishes and root vegetables such as lamb tagines or cowboy cut ribeyes. Of course, these dishes connect with big reds like our Animo Cabernet Sauvignon. As we move to spring, I see the style of food become a little lighter where we’re searing pork chops or lamb and the wines tend to move into Spanish selections or Pinot Noir. During summer when we’re in Beaufort, it’s all about aromatic whites like the refreshing Austrian

The Next Chapter It’s clear that the Mondavis have an entrepreneurial bug. The couple has created and sold two wine brands, and in 2014 created a very special wine representing both of their families. Rutledge and Vine is an Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon that the couple has poured their hearts and souls into. Rutledge comes from Lydia, whose forefathers signed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. The Vine represents Rob’s family who helped pioneer wine in the United States. “I believe this wine is the modern expression of old world craftsmanship,” mentions Rob. They only make a small bit of this specialty wine each harvest to offer to their friends and wine collectors. Rob continues making wines for the family brands and consults for wine brands around the world. Lydia and Rob also stay busy coming up with new concepts and designs for the Mondavi Home Collection. Stay tuned for more. ✶

TRANSLATIONS DESIGN STUDIO A C H AT W I T H L I Z B A K E R

What did the planning process for this home look like? In the initial design, I love to blend a hand-drawn façade with computer-generated hardline. I love the softness and realism of a hand drawing. It’s an art form that is not frequently seen in current day architectural design. I blend the hand-drawn rendering with CAD floor plans and site plans for detailed accuracy. Eventually all of the drawings become hardline blueprints generated in CAD and often in 3D. What challenges arose throughout this process? How did you work with the homeowners to alleviate those challenges? The home was designed speculatively. The new owners purchased the home toward the end of the construction. Understandably they wanted to implement some specific elements, custom to their family’s needs. The challenge was to implement these revisions in, while allowing them to feel as though they were part of the original design. The primary change was integrating a small playroom out of part of the front porch.

What is the most unique element of this home? Due to the views, the great room/ front of the home faces North. This part of the home gets less natural light than the other sides of the home. Natural light is very important in a home. In order to help allow natural light throughout the day, the intentional location of the stair tower allows the light to flow to all levels of the home throughout the day as the sun rotates. I also integrated glass on three different exposures in the great room to allow the sun to filter in throughout the day.

What did the planning process for this home look like? Our clients had been planning their dream home for more than five years before they came to us and shared their incredible vision. Typically, we meet a few times with clients on-site to discuss the property, reviewing all the potential variables that may impact the design, including the sun path, wind patterns, and the views. It’s through these first few meetings that we try to establish a solid connection with our clients, learning more about them, their families, and how they live. Our clients shared their goals for building a contemporary, Lowcountry farmhouse that would take advantage of the views and the beautiful trees—and that’s exactly what we did, using a mixture of hand sketches, 2D and 3D design technologies to bring their vision to life.

Why was it important for these homeowners to work with an architect for this project? The homeowners wanted to design a timeless house that could have existed on the site back when it was farmland. Careful consideration of the site’s existing landscape and knowledge of designing homes in the Lowcountry were critical criteria in making their dream home a realization. The main house is harmoniously nestled under live oaks. The architecture of the home was planned so that every room in the house could capitalize on the breathtaking views. Our clients wanted an architecture and design team that would take a thoughtful approach to designing in context of site history and landscape applied to the way we live in our homes today. What were some of the homeowner’s specific requests for this home? How did you incorporate their requests into the design? The homeowner’s had a wish list that included marsh views from every room, a detached guest house, bookshelves in the master bedroom, his-and-her offices, an outdoor shower, a pool, and wine room. They also wanted to salvage the natural landscape as much as possible. With existing live oaks dotting the property, it was essential for us to design a home that capitalized on the natural landscape.

What did the planning process for this home look like? When I start schematic design, I use a combination of computer drafting, to get accurate dimensions/proportions, and hand sketching, to allow freedom in design. This client had a specific concept for the house, including her own sketch of the trapezoidal floor plan and an inspiration image for the entry. I started with floor plan sketches in that shape, as well as offering alternative options. We met several times to discuss each design iteration, gradually narrowing down the options. By using Revit, 3D drafting software, I built the house three dimensionally, showing the client perspective views from different angles.

What challenges arose throughout this process? How did you work with the other contractors to overcome these difficulties? Designing a house with an attic story creates challenges, especially when the roofs are not at right angles to one another. Working with 3D software helps tremendously to ensure the interior and exterior details come together, to confirm ample head heights, and to get perspective views of the upper rooms. When framing was underway and we were able to get to the second floor, we realized there was a lot more space than anticipated. We were able to add two functional rooms, in lieu of spaces we expected to be small storage or equipment rooms. This gave my clients a larger art studio plus an office, both with amazing views. What is the most unique element of this home? There are so many unique elements in this home. The unique shape of the footprint creates an intimate entrance sequence through a courtyard. The way the wings splay out, combined with the huge windows, truly captures the panoramic views from all rooms. The two story main living space is magnificent. The towering timber frame structure allows a large open space for the living room, dining room, and kitchen, ready for entertaining. The second floor art studio is perfectly situated to take advantage of the consistent northern light.

What did the planning process for this home look like? Planning for this home was an easy process as the homeowners knew what they wanted, and were able to clearly articulate their desires. We had in person meetings where the wonderful clients, who have seven adult children, described how their family lived, what they needed, and what their dreams were for this ‘forever home.’ I used PowerCADD for my technical CADD drawings that I show to clients. What were some of the homeowner’s specific requests for this home? How did you incorporate their requests into the design? As I mentioned, the homeowners have seven children, so the first floor of the home has space for all of them to come home at the same time including a fun bunk room for their girls and a shared den for family karaoke. Another request was for an open floor plan that took advantage of the ocean view across the street, but also had ceilings that defined individual spaces. The contractor, interior designer, and myself went to the trim carpenter’s warehouse and handpicked the ceiling beams for the kitchen. Photography by Holger Obenhaus and Alex Thornton

What is the most unique element of this home? The varying ceiling treatments at the second floor, a vaulted pecky cypress ceiling at the sitting area, reclaimed wood beams at the living room, a Philip Jeffries tin-effect wall covering at the ceiling of the dining space, and a vaulted ceiling with reclaimed wood beams in the kitchen. They also have a much larger-than-Charleston-normal pool to accommodate their large family, and the ground floor space for the family to gather, cook, play ping pong, and swim is another favorite element of this home.

CROSBY CREATIONS HOME DESIGNS A C H AT W I T H J O D I C R O S B Y

What did the planning process for this home look like? This was a very unique lot with aspects we don’t often see in the Lowcountry. The buildable area where the house was to be placed had an existing sand dune that was more than 10’ higher then the rest of the lot. In technical terms, this house would be considered a drive under or elevated home because the garage is below the living space. The dune had to be excavated in order to accommodate the garage and part of it is more of a basement with a retaining wall, the main living space is actually on a raised slab that sits atop the dune. I use Autodesk Revit, which boasts full 3D capabilities. I can even share a link to a 3D viewer for clients to see the entire design, inside and out. It’s been a valuable tool and my clients love it.

What challenges arose throughout the process? How did you work with other contractors to alleviate those challenges? We had to strategically find the right placement for the home on the lot. As a residential building designer, I work with contractors to do just that—a lot of focus is put on spacing and maintaining architectural interest. The goal was to preserve the trees and capture the view of the marsh so there was a lot of collaboration to make this happen. I worked alongside the builder and the landscape architect, which was key in finding the best spot. What is the most unique element of this home? The rounded stair landing and vaulted ceilings in the kitchen, dining, and family room are among the most unique features in this home. The 16’ wide by 8’ tall four panel sliding glass door allows an 8’ wide opening which seamlessly flows onto the airy screened porch. I love the mixed cladding on the exterior and the incorporation of the architectural millwork throughout. The tiered tabby steps bordered by brick are very inviting and follow the topography of the dune. The cable rails give the exterior a modern and clean look. Note: While not a licensed architect, Crosby Creations Home Designs provides architectural home designs.

Why was it important for these homeowners to work with a residential building designer? The homeowners needed the professional services of a design team including the CHP residential designer and a structural engineer because of the complexity of the design with special features, solar panel orientation, and it being an elevated house in a AE flood zone. The CHP team worked closely with the homeowners to overcome site conditions such as existing trees and DHEC septic tank drainfield requirements. Close communications with the homeowners builds up their trust, confidence, and allows them to participate in the design process. What were some of the homeowner’s specific requests for this home? How did you incorporate their requests into the design while also incorporating your own suggestions? The homeowners wanted special features in this custom designed house including exposed beams, coffered ceiling, curved balcony, custom shower design, special mouldings, inlaid wood floor pattern design, open rooms, and gable trim décor. We designed the main elements of the house, then added all their specific requests and made additional suggestions. Note: While not a licensed architect, Carolina House Plans provides architectural home designs.

Though separate spaces, designed by different people, the Charleston single still showcases a cohesive feel throughout, with shades of blue seen in nearly every room. Page through this section to learn about the inspiration behind their designs and how they brought their spaces to life. The home is set to open as a bed and breakfast, The Bee and Blossom, later this year.

Fill up your cars and make sure they are up to date on their services.

Make sure you have a hurricane plan in place.

Know your evacuation route.

Prepare an emergency supply kit including water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, first aid kit, medications, and cash/credit cards.

Bring in lawn furniture and other loose objects.

Myt h 1

Myt h 2

Hurricane prep can be expensive and time-consuming.

Homeowner’s insurance covers all disaster damage.

Fact: Prepare in advance so you aren’t doing it all at once. Signing up for alerts and notifications is free. Chances are, you already have emergency kit items in your home.

244 • CH+D • Summer 2020

Fact: More often than not, your homeowner’s insurance will not cover all of the damage from the hurricane. You likely need to have flood insurance as well, so do your research to determine the requirements for your area.

Make arrangements for your pets — they often aren’t allowed in shelters.

Cover windows.

Trim trees and shrubs around the home.

Determine where to store your boat if applicable.

Clear gutters and downspouts.

M y th 3

Myth 4

Myth 5

A small amount of floodwater is okay to drive through.

An emergency kit prepares you for any disaster.

Only first responders need to know what to do.

Fact: It only takes 12 inches of floodwater to float your car and it’s often challenging to see the depth when you approach the water. To avoid damage to your car and putting yourself in danger, just turn around and stay away from the floodwater.

Fact: Natural disasters require more than a kit to be prepared. You need knowledge of how to protect yourself as well as a plan for the whole family.

Fact: Everyone needs to know what to do in the event of a natural disaster. Depending on the severity, first responders may not be able to get to you for days or weeks so you need to be fully prepared for any situation.

The PlyFASTner® Advanced Hurricane Protection System is a method of attaching plywood panels to windows and doors to help protect the home from flying debris during a hurricane. PlyFASTner® products meet building codes and can be installed on almost any residential building.

High impact and wind rated garage doors are becoming more popular as they have the highest wind rating. They have the wind load struts built into the door, so you will not see them through the glass.

Roll down shutters can operate either with a manual crank or a motorized system with a remote. These shutters take only minutes to pull down and protect your home in the event of a hurricane. Made from aluminum extrusions for maximum resistance and durability, roll down shutters are tested to withstand up to a Category 5 hurricane.

- Overhead Door Company of Charleston

- Buck Lumber & Building Supply

Marvin Signature-Ultimate aluminum clad/wood and Elevate line of “Ultrex” composite exterior/wood interior windows and doors are low maintenance products that provide ultimate hurricane protection. Signature and Elevate products are designed, tested, and certified for energy efficiency, driving rain, impact resistance, and cyclic pressure.

A hurricane resistant/windloaded garage door often has reinforced struts made from high tensile steel. In addition, some windloaded garage doors are tested at winds speeds of up to 150 miles per hour, equal to a Category 4 hurricane. Some models also undergo impact testing using a two by four wooden stud fired from a cannon to simulate flying debris. This testing helps ensure the garage door can stand up to even the most severe weather conditions.

- Southern Lumber & Millwork

- Precision Garage Door Service

- Lowcountry Hurricane Protection & Shutters

Eyewall Armor Full View Bahama Shutters offer superior and reliable storm protection with simple and minimal preparation. They employ patented articulating louvers that offer the best outward views, with the ability to close and prohibit large volumes of air from pressurizing the structure. - Holy City Shutter Company

S i di ng R oofin g Installing roof to wall connectors, gable wall bracing, re-nailing roof decking with code approved fasteners, installing a secondary water barrier, and making sure your new roof covering is up to code per wind region are ways to strengthen your roof during hurricane season and limit the damage that might be done.

Experts recommend a weather resistant siding to help protect your home from high winds and corrosive water. Fiber cement siding is the best option for homes in hurricane prone areas because of its durability. James Hardie siding products are five times thicker than vinyl siding products, with exceptional strength and deep wood grain textures. - Holy City Exteriors

- Alpha Omega Construction Group

GAF Shingles meet ASTM’s highest wind ratings, making them some of the toughest shingles around when it comes to the high winds prevalent during hurricanes and tropical storms. - Holy City Exteriors

HardiePlank Lap Siding is a great product for homeowners in the Lowcountry because it is extremely sturdy. The protection it offers is impervious to swelling or cracking. It provides the strength of fiber cement while offering a classic look. - Maner Fence and Specialties

Pursuing Excellence Costco has chosen C&C Myers Heating, Air Conditioning, Plumbing and Drains as a preferred vendor. Jim Clark, owner of C&C Myers, says Costco chose to work with his company because of their distinguished reputation and because of their high ratings in the Charleston area.

According to Jim, the two companies work well together because they have like-minded business models; delivering the best possible customer experience. The vetting process was no small task. The process included interviews and background checks for Jim and his staff.

Their company and business practices were also reviewed extensively to ensure that C&C Myers would be a good fit and uphold Costco’s mission. In their four years of working with Costco, C&C Myers has connected with like minded clients seeking quality and professionalism. Jim credits reaching their target market with this partnership to the client base growth they’ve experienced. Under New Management

Story by Rachael Lolar • Photography by Patrick Brickman • Portrait Submitted by Buckhannon

After spending most of his career in the corporate world Kevin Elliot was ready for a career change. He always wanted to own a business, and so the search for the perfect business began. Kevin discovered Buckhannon Tile + Design and the owner Sonya. Sonya was looking to get back into design and while she wanted to continue working for the company, she wanted to make sure she was leaving it in good hands. Kevin turned out to be the perfect fit. Since taking over the company, Kevin has continued the business practices that have been established over the years. When Kevin first met Sonya and the rest of her team, he was impressed with the company and the way it ran. Its locally run and family owned feel was the fresh breath of air from the corporate world he was looking for and he has strived to run the company with the same smallbusiness mindset. As Buckhannon Tile + Design grows its business, Kevin desires to open a second location in the area. For more information, call Buckhannon Tile + Design at (843) 881-8911 or visit buckhannontd.com.
