{ Indigo Fine Art Hosts Travelling Artist Hedi Moran } STORY BY CHRISTY CONWAY

W

hen Hedi Moran—a celebrated floral still-life painter—was introduced to Paula Lonneman of Charleston’s Indigo Fine Art Gallery, she was described as a “hot-house flower.”

“A lot of people think of floral paintings as being sweet or cute. I hate those words,” Hedi described. “Sunflowers are in your face. I just love their shapes, and to me, they’re strong.”

“Isn’t she a gem?” asked Paula at the Joy of Flowers oil painting workshop taught by Hedi March 19-23 in Charleston’s St. Mary’s Church. Hedi is a gem. Patiently, she demonstrated her wet-on-wet painting technique (commonly used by outdoor and plein air painters) to the class. Then, she performed one-on-one coaching.

It seems as if Hedi is more of a sunflower than a hot-house flower. Hedi, born Ase Pedersen, immigrated to the United States from a small Norwegian coastal village, picking up painting in the early '70s. She still visits her homeland, teaching her spontaneous, impressionist style in her native tongue of Norwegian! Thanks to Paula at Indigo Fine Art Gallery, Hedi recently added Charleston to her string of workshops.

and paints the local landscape. Judith Perry lives out on Kiawah and magically brings the beauty of the Lowcountry onto the canvas. Being a partnership of three, we support each other.”

“Hedi is the finest still life floral artist that I have had the privilege to know,” Paula exclaimed. This is probably the reason why Indigo Fine Art gallery represents Hedi’s work. They represent the best, including the works of 13 other artists (three of which are the owners).

Also, being a trio, they are able to provide extra services—like the Hedi Moran workshop—to Charlestonians. Paula urges those interested, “Come in and have a glass of wine with us. We have a beautiful little garden and exquisite artwork.”
