ASK THE EXPERTS

We asked four companies:

is there anything in particular that homeowners should do for their homes in the summertime?

“Now’s the time to enclose that screened porch and make it a year-round room with heating and air. This will enable you to get more use out of it. It can be a four-season type of room versus a screened-in room that you would only use a few months out of the year. I do a lot of these enclosures to give people more usable space in their home; I would say that’s probably 60 percent of my business during the summer—enclosing existing porches into sunrooms.”

“Rhino Shield's home coating system is very energy effecient. If you put this paint product on your house, it's going to block 80 percent of radiant heat. It's a green product—it's got the energy star award and it's a good product, especially in the summertime because of its energy effeciency. Regular paint does not stop moisture, cracking, rot, and the damaging rays of the sun like Rhino Shield does.”

“The most dangerous aspect of the summer for your home’s wiring is the lightning. Charleston is very high up on the lightning scale, and we experience a lot of heat lightning and frequent afternoon storms. I always recommend that homeowners get some sort of lightning and surge suppression. My company offers these suppression tools as well as a free assessment to find out whether your current wiring is safe and working properly.”

“Right now is a great time to see if you have any kind of fading on your outdoor paint. You’ll notice it more in the summer months with all the rain we have coming in. In addition to checking your paint, you want to make sure all of the caulking seals around your windows and doors are really tight. We’re going to have rain all of May, June, and July followed by a blistering heat that comes in the summer, so we want to make sure those cracks are all sealed up before that happens.”
