Do you have any idea the time frame of when these homes that you’re designing today will actually be built in the city? Eddie Bello: Well that’s really up to the city. The goal would be, once these are complete, that we would give the drawings to the city and then we will work with them and help them as the process moves on. It kind of depends on their budget and their time table. I know that affordable housing is an urgent need, so it’s definitely a priority, but really we don’t know if it’s going to be a couple of months or later this year.
Charettes, there is a strong sense of collaboration. These folks are going to pull out a lot of good ideas from their groups. They might learn a few things about building codes or building design that they didn’t know before they got here. Long-term, some of these folks end up forming partnerships or other relationships where they work together in the future. David Hill is an architect with Verdi who specializes in energy efficiency and was a participant in the Design Charette.

David Hill: We’re going to strive for making
sure these homes are very efficient in terms of size and in terms of how they’re sealed and insulated. That will be able to give us a lot more options in terms of efficiently sizing the heating and air conditioning systems. We also want to make sure that the homeowners have some good opportunities for natural heating and cooling. How are you promoting an energy efficient method at the Charette today? David Hill: What I’m trying to do is to get the different groups to look at some very broad green building ideas at the very beginning. As they start developing more and more refined architectural ideas, maybe we can get some of that worked in just by virtue of the good design that’s happening here.
