Winged Ox Players to Present “It Can’t Happen Here”

Here” has been described as a “cautionary dark satire about the fragility of democracy and how fascism can take hold even in the land of liberty.” Veteran Winged Ox Director Deacon Pierce, who is also the company’s Artistic Director says that the Winged Ox Players are proud to continue their tradition of bringing provocative drama to Jamestown.

The Winged Ox Players will present the thought provoking play “It Can’t Happen Here” the weekends of May 11th and 12th and 18th and 19th at the Willow Bay Theater, 21 E. Third Street, Jamestown. Friday and Saturday evening performances will begin at 7pm and there will also be a matinee performance on Saturday May 12th at 1pm followed by a panel discussion with several community members, including journalists, high school teachers, and members of the cast. The play is based on the novel by American author Sinclair Lewis and has been adapted for the stage by Tony Taccone and Bennet S. Cohen. “It Can’t Happen

“Our goal in presenting this play is to encourage the audience to thoughtfully consider their part in our country’s ongoing experiment in democracy. In the play, many of the characters are forced to examine and act on their beliefs, sometimes with terrible consequences.” adds Willow Fodor, secretary for the group. “They (the characters) must look into their own hearts and find the courage to step out of their comfort zones and into the conflict that has sprung up around them. We want our audience to come away with questions: about their own beliefs, about our history, about what is best for our country going forward. We hope that these questions will spark an informed and civil conversation about these topics. We won’t all agree on the answers, but we can come together as a community and explore those questions with kindness and courage. We must be willing to honor the humanity in every person, especially those we don’t agree with, to find answers to the issues that face us all.” Admission to the show is free, but free will donations are encouraged. Proceeds from the performances will be used to establish a scholarship for a Chautauqua County senior with an interest in studying journalism at a 2 or 4-year college. There will also be a voter registration table at each performance. The Winged Ox Players is a ministry of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church that engages the theatrical talents of the greater Jamestown area to present plays that inspire conversations about our community. Individuals interested in more information about the Players are asked to contact Pierce at 716-969-7412 or Steven Cobb at 716-499-5142. Saturday, May 5 is Audubon Birdathon for Ryan Exline Memorial Scholarship friends to see as many birds as you can on Birdathon 2018, a one-day-only bird count that raises money for the Ryan Exline Memorial Scholarship. At 6 a.m., the group will start on the Nature Center grounds and other locations to find as many species of birds as possible. Participants are encouraged to stay at least till noon, but for the ACNC naturalists it will be an (almost) all-day event. The Ryan Exline Memorial Scholarship is awarded every year to a local student heading off to college with an interest in pursuing the natural sciences. Generous supporters pledge an amount, either per species or in total, and the end result is a $500 scholarship. You can bird with the team or show your support by pledging. This scholarship is named in memory of one of its very first recipients. Ryan Exline was a volunteer, intern, and nature-lover, and was attending graduate school at Duke University when he was killed in a car accident in 2008. His love of nature and of nurturing future generations of “nature nerds” lives on through this scholarship. Saturday, May 5, is the date of the annual Birdathon fundraiser sponsored by the Education Staff of Audubon Community Nature Center and their friends. The event raises money for the Ryan Exline Memorial Scholarship. Pictured here, Auduboners are verifying what they spotted.

The Chautauqua Star inclusion of my husband, of course. He’s a reliable muffin critic. So, there you have it. Enough of the convincing, I’ll now give you the opportunity to decide for yourself with this recipe. Take it or leave it, but don’t knock it unless you’ve given it a decent try.

Maple Banana Muffins

By Katy Wise

Contributing Writer

It’s finally warm outside! That might not seem like the best time to share these kind of recipes, as most people aren’t prone to be baking during warmer weather.

time outside, less time inside. Enter: muffins. They’re quick, mostly mess free, and you can eat them on the go. On a warm Saturday morning, when you’d rather quickly scoot out the door to enjoy the weather, but you can’t take your eggs or cereal anywhere quickly without a nice big mess. Muffins are there for you. I hope that this was convincing enough of an argument for you. If you already were pro-muffing, you probably didn’t need to read any of my previous rambling, so I apologize. Did I mention that they’re delicious?

Generally speaking, when it’s warmer, nobody wants that added heat from the oven.

Really. The first bite that my husband had, he exclaimed, ‘this is the best muffin I have ever had!’

Let me convince you, though. The reason I find myself baking with bananas when it gets warmer out is because that’s when bananas, or most fruit in general, start ripening quicker.

Now to explain his credibility, he worked at not just one, but two coffee shops before we got married, so he has had his fair share of muffins.

It is now prime time for those always green bananas from the produce department. Has anyone else noticed this as of late, or is it just me? Anyways, it’s just fact that bananas start to brown quicker as the weather gets warmer. This means they are prime for the baking, and also making into smoothies.

As always, thanks for reading! Happy baking and happy spring from hbk! INGREDIENTS 2 1 1/3 Tbsp. 2/3 C. 2 Tbsp. 1

Ripened bananas Oil Sugar Pure maple syrup Large egg

1 ½ C All-purpose flour 1 pinch salt 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. cinnamon Generous sprinkle of allspice Cinnamon sugar topping (optional) 1 tsp. Cinnamon 1/3 C. Sugar INSTRUCTIONS

Because as everybody knows, muffins and coffee are BFF’s. He also lives with me, so he has sampled all of my various baked goods, and all of the various recipes that I have shared with our readers over the years. Some of my own from scratch recipes turn out great, and some of them… well, I wonder who allowed me to try and create my own recipes.

Two of our very favorite things around this house. Now to further convince you on the subject of muffins.

This one, however, I was pleasantly surprised by. As was my whole family, with the

When it gets warmer out, most of us want more

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and prepare muffin pan with liners. 2. Mash bananas with a fork in a medium mixing bowl, then add all wet ingredients and mix well. 3. In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together dry ingredients. 4. Create a small well in the middle of the wet ingredients, and dump in the flour mixture. Combine just until moist, or you can’t see any more flour. Batter should be a bit lumpy. 5. Using a tablespoon, fill muffin liners ½ to ¾ of the way full. 6. Whisk together your cinnamon sugar topping in a very small mixing bowl. Sprinkle on top of each muffin. 7. Bake for 15-18 minutes. Yields about 18 standard sized muffins.

Valley Historical Society Holds Maple Sugar Party Contributed Article

SINCLAIRVILLE-Members and guests of the Valley Historical Society of Sinclairville, met recently for the opening meeting of the year with a maple sugar party in the South Stockton Wayside Chapel. President of the society Larry Barmore opened the meeting with a welcome, led by the Lord’s Prayer and the salute to the American Flag. Maple syrup, supplied by Elsie Livermore, was brought to a temperature above boiling, and then each person was given some syrup in a bowl to stir for a time until it turned to maple sugar. Shown in the photograph is historical member Walter Waite stirring his bowl full of warm maple syrup. Crackers and pickles were supplied to take away the sweetness of the maple sugar. Opera House to Present the Bolshoi Ballet’s Giselle

Contributed Article Fredonia Opera House

FREDONIA – The 1891 Fredonia Opera House will present one of the world’s greatest ballet companies – the Bolshoi Ballet – performing Giselle on Sat., May 5, at 1 p.m. It will be presented in high definition, captured live via satellite from the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. When Giselle learns that her beloved Albrecht is promised to another woman, she dies of a broken heart in his arms.

While Albrecht grieves, she returns from the dead as a Wili, a vengeful spirit meant to make unfaithful men dance until death. This treasure of romantic ballet is one of the oldest and greatest in classical repertoire, touching upon the great romantic themes: a doomed love affair ending in tragedy, a dive into fantasy and ultimate redemption through the power of love. The Bolshoi is renowned for its intimate and emotionally intense interpretation of this beloved fantasy.

Prima ballerina Svetlana Zakharova personifies this ultimate ballerina role, alongside the sensational Sergei Polunin as Albrecht, in this chilling yet luminous ballet that has captivated audiences for more than 150 years at the Bolshoi. The ballet runs two hours, 20 minutes. Individual tickets to Giselle are $15, ($10 students). A special Live in HD Series flexible subscription of eight tickets that can be used however you want – one at a time to eight different HD Series events, all at once for eight people, or anything in between – is $116. Tickets may be purchased in person at the Opera House Box Office or by phone at 716-679-1891, TuesdayFriday, 1-5 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online anytime at www. fredopera.org. This presentation is made possible with support from the United Arts Appeal of Chautauqua County and the Arts Services Initiative’s Give for Greatness Program. The 1891 Fredonia Opera House is a membersupported not-for-profit organization located in Village Hall in downtown Fredonia. For a complete schedule of events, visit www.fredopera.org.

Learn Beginning Fly Fishing, Saturday, May 12, at Audubon

You can get a beginning education in fly fishing on Saturday afternoon, May 12, at Audubon Community Nature Center. The class will be presented by Fin and Fly Adventures’ owner Brian Minich.

Contributed Article Audubon Community Nature Center

Jamestown, N.Y. – According to Wikipedia, fly fishing is “an angling method in which an artificial ‘fly’ is used to catch fish.” Others would call it one of the most elegant outdoor activities. Whatever it is to you, you are invited to learn more at Beginning Fly Fishing at Audubon Community Nature Center on Saturday, May 12, 1-4 p.m. This introductory class includes a lesson on the history of fly fishing, rod assembly, gear overview and casting practice. Casting a nearly weightless fly requires casting techniques significantly different from other forms of casting. Fly fishermen use hand tied flies that resemble natural invertebrates, baitfish,

other food organisms, or “lures” to provoke the fish to bite at the fly. Workshop leader Brian Minich grew up in Bradford, Pa., and has a lifelong love of fishing. His career in fly tying began at age eight, and he hasn’t looked back since. With more than 15 years of experience in the guiding industry, Minich is now the owner of his own guide business, Fin and Fly Adventures, in Warren, Pa., where he creates custom trips on the rivers and streams of northwestern Pennsylvania and the Southern Tier of New York. All the equipment for this introductory class is provided, though if you have your own gear, please bring it. Casting practice is outdoors, so plan to dress for the weather. Enrollment is limited. The fee for the program

is $56 or $42 for Nature Center members. Paid reservations are required by Wednesday, May 9, 2018, and can be made by calling (716) 5692345 during business hours or online through the Programs page at auduboncnc. org. Audubon Community Nature Center is located at 1600 Riverside Road, onequarter mile east of Route 62 between Jamestown, N.Y., and Warren, Pa. Opera House Cinema Series to Screen “Finding Your Feet”; Screening Offers Yoga & Movie

of the class fee benefits the Opera House. “So, if you like to sit around in yoga clothes and watch movies on Saturday nights – and who doesn’t?” says Sandoval. “Here’s your chance to do just that, AND help raise money for one of the jewels of the village.”

Contributed Article Fredonia Opera House FREDONIA – The next feature film in the Opera House Cinema Series is “Finding Your Feet,” starring Imelda Staunton. It will be screened on Sat., May 5, and Tues., May 8, at 7:30 p.m. When “Lady” Sandra Abbott (Staunton) discovers that her husband of 40 years is having an affair with her best friend, she seeks refuge in London with her estranged, older sister Bif (Celia Imrie). The two could not be more different – Sandra is a fish out of water next to her outspoken, serial dating, free-spirited sibling. But different is just what Sandra needs at the moment, and she reluctantly lets Bif drag her along to a community dance class, where gradually she starts finding her feet and romance as she meets her sister’s friends, Charlie (Timothy Spall), Jackie (Joanna Lumley) and Ted.

Jeannette Catsoulis, in the New York Times, calls the film “comfort food for the young at heart … cozy as old slippers and as familiar as the British character actors who populate its London locations.” Todd Jorgensen, in Cinemalogue.com, calls it “a crowd-pleasing mix of laughs and poignancy.” Lisa Jensen, in Good Times Santa Cruz, calls it “a frisky charmer of a movie, with a stunning final image that will leave you cheering.” Rated PG13 for suggestive material, brief drug use and brief strong language, “Finding Your Feet” runs one hour, 51 minutes. In connection with the Sat., May 5, screening, Lynda Sandoval, of Yoga Underground, will hold a relaxing “cinema stretch” yoga class at 5:45 p.m. on the Opera House stage. Participants in the $10 hour-long class receive a voucher for discounted $5 admission to the movie that night! And, a portion

“It JustByDidn’t Seem Real” RICHARD GOODMAN

It was one of those rare years in northeastern Ohio when spring arrived ahead of schedule. That fateful morning in early May dawned clear and warm, exaggerating the greenness of the grass and the yellows, blues and reds of the flowers. My consciousness was cluttered with those things important to a graduate student in his season, temporarily blocking out the pulsating weekend news flashes of demonstrations, armed patrols and burning buildings. As if experiencing a mental flashback to the war-torn Southeast Asia, I had recently left, I found an otherwise peaceful college campus transformed into an armed encampment, complete with rifle-wielding soldiers and steel-bellied trucks. Somehow it just didn’t seem real. The events of that horrible day were being openly mocked and challenged. At one corner, a handsome young guardsman was being teased by mini-skirted coeds and, at another, a long stemmed rose was being gently lowered into the blush-gray muzzle of a rifle. Even when I opened the communication building door, seeing for the first time the large block print of the “John Doe Warrant” taped to the window, I couldn’t fully escape my own private concerns, and as I walked across campus to my morning statistics class, all I could think about was the upcoming defense of my thesis and the start of my professional career. ❑❑❑ Dr. Lawrence was a man driven by task. He clung to his blackboard like a tiny bird clings to its nest, simultaneously writing — lecturing — writing — lecturing, never actually aware of whether anyone else was in the room. It was somewhere during the filling up of the middle blackboard panel that it happened. The hypnotic spell was momentarily broken by a single voice, respectfully asking Dr. Lawrence to set aside what he was doing and provide the class with an opportunity to discuss “the events of the day.” A slight pause was his only response. Two more attempts to sidetrack Dr. Lawrence met with similar results. It was just after his introduction of the Chi Square test that the bell rang, releasing the 50 or so souls to follow the beat of their own individual drummers. ❑❑❑ The rumor mill was in full operation, grinding out its message of a forbidden demonstration scheduled for high noon. It was a little before 12 that the Division Director thrust his head into the entrance of my classroom, telling me to dismiss my class and follow him. Responding to the strange look on his face, I obeyed, slowly climbing a ladder to the building's roof where I pleaded with students on the walks below to enter the safety of the lobby. From my vantage point I could clearly see the commons, a favorite gathering place by day and love-making spot by night. Suddenly there were cheers, shouts, drum beats and finally gunfire. It was at that precise moment that the normal flow of the world was temporarily interrupted. Tear gas watered the eyes, sirens drowned out all other sounds and death hung heavy in the air. ❑❑❑ It was about two weeks after the university closed that I received a letter from Dr. Lawrence. It was addressed to “Members of My Morning Statistic Class” and it was asking for, of all things, our understanding and forgiveness. In a few simple words, Dr. Lawrence seemed to be questioning his career and life. He said, in part, “I will never know what might have happened had I turned from the blackboard and talked about the events of the day...” ❑❑❑ Sometime later, I was told that one of the dead students was a member of our morning statistics class. Perhaps it was the student who tried to distract Dr. Lawrence. Richard Goodman is the director emeritus of lifelong learning and international programs and economic development at Fredonia State University.
