Erie to Host Rhythm and Ride Weekend Lake Erie Cyclefest and Erie’s Blues & Jazz Festival Team-Up for Four Days of Riding, Music and Entertainment

Contributed Article Erie Sports Commission Erie, PA: The Erie Sports Commission is pleased to announce Lake Erie Cyclefest will add two new rides to its second annual event, as it partners with Erie’s Blues & Jazz Festival, creating a packaged Rhythm and Ride Weekend. The event will kick off Thursday, August 2 and feature six total cycling events through Sunday, August 5. Proceeds from Lake Erie Cyclefest will once again benefit EmergyCare, WQLN and the YMCA of Greater Erie. Representatives from each organization, as well as VisitErie, the Erie Sports Commission, Erie Arts & Culture, Erie County and City of Erie announced the updated event at a press conference on Tuesday, March 20. Two new rides, the Good Morning Star Shine Ride and Oscar the Grouch’s Gravel Grinder, will add to the four-day event, which will also include a new feature in The HUB, a place for riders to relax at Erie’s Blues & Jazz Festival. Riders will be able to register for rides at The HUB, which will also feature beer sampling from Five & 20 Spirits and Brewing and a BikeErie hosted bike corral. The HUB will be open from Friday, August 3 to Sunday, August 5. Lake Erie Cyclefest will kick off its four-day event with the new Good Morning Star Shine Ride, let by Jet24’s “Good Morning Erie” host Traci Teudhope. Teudhope will lead cyclists on a loop around Presque Isle State Park at daybreak on Thursday, August 2. The second ride, the BikeErie Slow Roll, will be held the evening of Thursday, August 2 in Downtown Erie. Erie County Executive Kathy Dahlkemper and City of Erie Mayor Joe Schember will lead the fun, slow tour of Erie. The BikeErie Slow Roll will end with live music in Perry Square at an Erie Downtown Partnership Block Party. The YMCA Jelly Jar Ride will be held Friday, August 3, beginning at Shades Beach Park in Harborcreek. The 25- or 50-mile non-competitive ride will wind through the Lake Erie grape-growing region, and conclude with a picnic featuring wood-fired pizza from Brooklyn Pizza and beer samples from Five & 20 Spirits and Brewing. All proceeds from the Jelly Jar Ride benefit the YMCA’s Food + Fun Bus, a mobile meals site for kids. EmergyCare’s Tour de West County, Erie County’s premier bicycle tour, will provide four scenic ride routes on Saturday, August 4 departing from Lake Erie Community Park. The event, with a long-standing tradition of spectacular routes and safety support, will offer a 12-, 25-, 50- or a 100-mile loop of Erie County, ending with a picnic. All riders will receive tokens for beer sampling at The HUB. The second new ride, Oscar the Grouch’s Gravel Grinder, will be held Sunday, August 5. The early-morning 25-mile ride begins at Lake Erie Speedway and follows a dirt and gravel route on road and trail to and around eastern Erie County’s Eaton Reservoir. The final ride of the weekend is the WQLN Alley Cat Ride on Sunday, August 5. The

scavenger hunt themed ride is the only bike race, beginning and ending at Frontier Park. Cyclists will be given the race’s first stop location, where the race’s remaining nine stops will be revealed. Cyclists will be tasked to determine the best way to connect them, and the first three riders to return to Frontier Park will win prizes. The ride will end with beer sampling from Five & 20 Spirits and Brewing and music at Erie’s Blues & Jazz Festival. Prices for each ride vary, with discounts offered to riders based on the number of rides entered. “Our inaugural year was so amazing and our riders gave us great suggestions to add to the experience this year. Many of those suggestions – including the additional rides and the HUB – have been added this year’s event,” said Tom New, President of WQLN. “Multi-day ride discount packages have also been added to our ride fees so that we are encouraging riding and staying in Erie for the weekend. Teaming up with Erie’s Blues & Jazz Festival is a natural fit for Lake Erie Cyclefest, as it is a longstanding green event that emphasizes environmental awareness by encouraging comprehensive recycling, walking, cycling, and public transportation, and by championing its beautiful setting in the Lake Erie Arboretum at Frontier (LEAF).” “Lake Erie Cyclefest was a great success in its inaugural year, drawing more than 600 riders to experience our county by bicycle,” said Ron Sertz, Executive Director of the Erie Sports Commission. “In partnering with Erie Arts & Culture to create Rhythm and Ride Weekend, Lake Erie Cyclefest will be an even more enjoyable event for out-oftown cyclists and locals alike. WQLN, the YMCA of Greater Erie and EmergyCare have truly created an event that offers not only scenic rides for cyclists of all skill levels, but also a weekend-long experience that showcases the best our region has to offer. Erie’s Blues & Jazz Festival is one of the largest free, outdoor music festivals of its kind in the region, highlighting tremendous national, international, and regional talent all on one Mainstage. Each year, the Festival engages close to 20,000 residents and visitors and is reported by audiences to be a tradition for their families, friends, school reunions and company social events. “We’re excited to work with our partners to present Erie’s popular Blues & Jazz Festival and the Lake Erie Cyclefest on the same weekend, positioning Erie and the region as a destination for arts, culture, entertainment and recreation for locals and visitors,” said Amanda Brown Sissem, Executive Director of Erie Arts & Culture. This year’s Festival won’t disappoint with three days jam-packed with arts activities and outstanding performances for the entire family! Frontier Park will be alive with art exhibits, workshops, lectures, engaging children’s activities, and performances; it will serve as a great hub for socialization for cyclists.” For more information, including ride times and registration information, visit www. eriecyclefest.org.

Honey Balsamic Chicken & Strawberry Salad INGREDIENTS 3 Chicken breasts, grilled 2 Cups Fresh strawberries, sliced and quartered 1 Cup Fresh cucumber, sliced and quartered 4 Cups Spring mix salad ¼ Cup Blue Cheese crumbles ½ Cup Honey ½ Cup Balsamic Vinaigrette salad dressing Salt and pepper, olive oil

Honey Balsamic Chicken & Strawberry Salad

By Katy Wise

Contributing Writer

Using salt and pepper, with a drizzle of olive oil, season and prepare your chicken. This will take about 20-25 minutes to fully cook.

The summer meal idea train is here again. Last week we started delving into various light and easy meals that are perfect for summertime.

Please remember to check chicken with a meat thermometer before eating.

Perfect for when you’re on the go and don’t have a ton of time to be in the kitchen, and especially when you don’t want to over utilize the stove and just make your house any warmer. Does anyone else have the, ‘our kitchen feels like the inside of a microwave,’ problem in the summer? Because we sure do. These are also the perfect kind of meals for when you know you need to eat but you aren’t incredibly hungry. That doesn’t mean that they aren’t filling, just that they aren’t something heavy that will further weigh you down in the already oppressive heat. The idea for this meal came when we stopped to get some fresh strawberries. If I had to pick a few reasons for why summertime is my favorite, fresh summer produce would definitely make the list. Strawberries, green beans, blueberries, the list goes on and on.

While your chicken is cooking, wash and slice your strawberries into quarters. Repeat with cucumber. There’s nothing like a meal prepared with something that was freshly picked the very same day as you’re eating it. I also love the opportunity to teach our children about where our food comes from during the summer. Definitely a different experience from selecting off of the Wegmans, Walmart or Aldi’s shelf.

Prepare salad by washing if necessary. Place in a large bowl with your fresh produce. Using a whisk, mix the balsamic dressing thoroughly with the honey. Once the chicken is done, let rest for a minimum of five minutes before cutting into strips or chunks.

This salad will definitely be in our warm weather menu repertoire. I could eat it every day, but that’s also not exactly balance.

This not only aids in the prevention of burns, but will keep the meat more moist.

Here is a recipe that I hope you will enjoy as much as we did.

Slice or dice that chicken and place on top of the lettuce. Drizzle with your dressing and finish off with the blue cheese crumbles. Enjoy!

As always, thanks for reading, and happy cooking from hbk!

This recipe will yield 4-5 large plate portions, or 2 adults and 3 kids perfectly. Didi I already mention that our kids like this too? Winner, winner!

Puzzles & Games “Bucket of Junk” at the Chautauaqua county fair

6 • Friday, June 22, 2018

The Chautauqua Star

Contributed Article Submitted by Kay Richard, Jr. Arts & Crafts Superintendent in Floral Hall

Again this year the Chautauqua County Fair is excited to continue the Bucket of Junk department in Floral Hall for juniors (age 17 & under). Exhibitors will be given a bucket or bag containing various items often considered “junk.” The exhibitor will then be challenged to make a creation using the contents of their bucket. All buckets will contain the same number of items and be as close to identical as possible. The goal is to use ALL these items (but not the bucket or bag) in their sculpture. Exhibitors will be allowed to paint, finish, bend, shape, bolt, glue, cut, fasten, sand or clean their items BUT no items may be added. Keeping The Faith best directives about love in God’s Word, 1 Corinthian 13.

Rev. Michael Lokietek Family Church Fredonia fcfredonia.org

Dear Pastor, what does “walking in love” mean? Last week we looked at the topic of God’s kind of love by examining why we need to walk in love. We saw that it is included in the only commandment that Jesus gave us, that “… we love one another as I have loved you” ( John 15:12). We also saw that God considers love to be the greatest characteristic in our Christian identity to ourselves and to the world (1 Corinthians 13:13). This week I want to begin our examination of the

Let’s look at 1 Corinthians 13:4…”Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up.” This verse begins with the often misunderstood phrase, “love suffers long.” Just recently, someone indicated that this phrase means God wants us to suffer for a long time in sickness, death, and (I suppose) love and marriage! While this could have been viewed as a set up for a marriage joke…I believe that the individual was sincere and just confused by the language of their Bible translation. The word “suffer” isn’t about being in actual pain (as in physical pain) but about maintaining a patient, enduring, tolerant attitude towards another person. So how does this apply to our life? If we look at many relationships, we see that there may be some areas that

are not seen as “up to par”. Even if most of the relationship is experienced as “good”, there may be particular behaviors or attitudes that are detrimental or hurtful to the relationship. So how should this be handled? Walking in love God’s way, requires a Christian to put up with the bad things and turn these hurts into an opportunity for blessings in kindness and caring. But let’s face it, doing this is very difficult. Rather than bless the “offender”, our fleshly emotions want to feel sorry or get vindication for being angry and self-righteous. This is where the longsuffering happens. The Word directs us in 1 Peter 5:7-9 to continue to behave and think in a loving way, while casting or giving the problem, or hurt over to God for His attention. In doing so, He promises to “take care of our business” because He loves and cares for us. After all, isn’t He best equipped to handle it?

The Icee (also called a Slurpee, Slush, or Mr. Misty) was invented in the late 1950s, by Omar Knedlik. The first flavor available was root beer.

WRFA-LP and the Southern Tier Brewing Co. are teaming up to present the seventh annual Great American Picnic – an evening of friends, food and live music from a variety of local and regional performers. This year’s theme is “I Love the 80s!” The Great American Picnic will begin at 5 p.m. at the home of the Southern Tier Brewing Co. Jamestown, N.Y. – Audubon Community Nature Center’s (ACNC) Wild 5K Run/Walk and Monarch Butterfly Festival are opportunities for businesses and individuals to show their community spirit and support nature education. On Saturday, July 28, runners and walkers of all ages race through Audubon’s forests and fields and around pond edges in Audubon’s Wild 5K Run/Walk. Again this year, the race is part of the 2018 Chautauqua Striders/UPMC Chautauqua WCA Runner of the Year Series. Participants who register by Monday, July 16, receive a t-shirt and discounted entry fee. Prizes are awarded to the first three overall male and female walker and runner finishers. 52 Participants Enjoy Audubon Exclusive: Kinzua Dam and Allegheny National Fish Hatchery Tours was so great that arrangements were made to double that number.

Steve Lauser of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Doris Masson with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service led the tours. Numerous young eagles were spotted from the dam’s bird viewing platform. Following the morning tour of the dam, the group enjoyed a picnic lunch by the Big Bend Visitors Center. After lunch participants used their own vehicles to take a rare, scenic drive across the top of Kinzua Dam and into the back gate of the Allegheny National Fish Hatchery for the afternoon tour. Welker spoke to the group about the natural riches of the area and the importance of preserving and protecting them. Conservation efforts deserve credit for the Allegheny National Forest that did not exist 100 years ago, the flourishing rivers that were once devoid of life, and the lineage of the area deer herd. If there is enough interest, Welker will arrange for Audubon to offer the dam and fish hatchery tours again in the fall. Information about this and other Audubon Exclusive opportunities is on the Exclusives page at auduboncnc.org. Saturday (June 2) Audubon Community Nature Center presented an Audubon Exclusive: guided tours of Kinzua Dam and the Allegheny National Fish Hatchery located at its base. After the morning tour of the dam and a picnic lunch, participants drove their vehicles across the top of the dam to the fish hatchery. This picture was taken in the room where fish eggs are hatched. Each team will include a visiting PGA professional from the Western New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania areas, making for an exciting day of golf. The Pro-Am will have an 11 AM shotgun start, with lunch served on the course, and concludes with the awards dinner at the club’s Double Eagle Restaurant. (Route 394) in Ashville, and offers docking and complete marine service at their 5822 Snug Harbor Road location in Mayville. The event serves as a major fundraiser for the Conservancy, with proceeds from prior year tournaments supporting many vital watershed education and land conservation projects and programs. Chairman Bill Locke stated, “This tournament funds activities which address the root causes of the pollution that fuels lake plant and algae growth. These include watershed conservation projects that conserve important habitats and land features which provide clean waters to the streams and lakes of the Chautauqua region. Also included is working with landowners to enhance shoreline habitats, control soil erosion, re-establish healthy vegetated buffer strips along streams and reduce nutrients entering waterways from lawn care and other activities. Stopping these problems at their source is essential to a healthy lake. Maintaining a healthy and enjoyable lake is essential to the economy of our area and benefits all businesses and residents of the region.” More information is available at the CWC’s website at www. chautauquawatershed.org or by calling the CWC at 664-2166 or the CGC at 357-6211.

JHS Students Chosen to Participate in Young Writers Institute at Chautauqua Institution “These students are avid readers and were recommended because of their maturity and their love of language,” remarked Mrs. Price. “This Chautauqua experience will appeal to them because they are intellectually curious; they will fit right in with a community of like-minded creative writers.” Thanks to the generosity of the Chautauqua’s CLSC Alumni Association, the JHS students will live on the historic grounds of the Chautauqua Institution with a host family and have the opportunity to attend daily lectures by worldrenowned experts, nightly concerts, and live theatrical performances, as well as take advantage of waterfront recreation opportunities and the fitness center. “I am looking forward to improving my creative writing skills,” said Elyse Jones, “and I’ll definitely go to Alexander Gavrylyuk’s piano recital.” Ellen Cross added, “I am extremely thankful to be given this opportunity to learn to better express myself through the written word while living on the beautiful grounds of Chautauqua institution. I plan on attending the ballet and the symphony.” Jamestown High School juniors Beck Anderson, Micaela Cleveland, Ellen Cross, Matthew Roehmholdt and Elyse Jones, prepare to participate in the Young Writers Institute at Chautauqua Institution this summer with the help of JHS teacher Barbi Price.

[Jamestown, NY] – Jamestown High School rising seniors, Beck Anderson, Micaela Cleveland, Ellen Cross, Matthew Roehmholdt and Elyse Jones, will soon have an opportunity that every budding writer would love to have – an all-expense paid Chautauqua experience during one of the first three weeks of the season at the Young Writers Institute as recipients of the 2018 Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle Alumni Association Scholarship. JHS English Department Chair Barbi Price and teacher Norma DeJoy nominated the five students for this prestigious award. All scholarship applicants were required submit samples of creative work, as well as a letter of recommendation from an educator. The JHS students each sent a work of fiction, poetry, or nonfiction describing a dramatic scene, event, or memory, a one to two-page piece describing a difficult decision they or a fictional character had to make and how it was resolved, a two-page nonfiction response reflecting on something they would like to change in their community or world and how they would go about promoting that change, and finally, a personal statement on why they wanted to attend the Young Writers Institute.

At the Young Writers Institute, Beck, Micaela, Ellen, Elyse and Matthew will be mentored by a faculty of nationally-recognized, published teaching-artists who, over the course of the week, will help the students hone their writing through short exercises, close study of work by contemporary writers, and workshops. Each student will have the opportunity to work one-on-one to develop a plan for future growth and to attend readings by writers-in-residence at Chautauqua’s Literary Arts Center at Alumni Hall.

The students are looking forward to their experience. The Week 1 theme is “The Life of the Written Word,” Week 2 is “American Identity,” and Week 3 is “The Art of Play.” “It will be amazing to write poetry for a solid week,” commented Matthew Roehmholdt, and Micaela Cleveland stated, “I’m thrilled to be able to broaden my creativity and learn new ways to style and freshen my writing skills.” “I’m so pleased that Beck, Micaela, Ellen, Elyse, and Matthew have been afforded this opportunity,” Mrs. Price noted. “It will broaden their scope of experience, expose them to unique cultural events, and give them a chance to network with people whom they might not otherwise meet. I’m sure that these deserving students will be intellectually stimulated and culturally nourished by their week at Chautauqua.”

New for the older youth this year is the “Golden Ticket” program. Golden Tickets will be hidden randomly in Junior books to encourage reading. Each Golden Ticket found gets the reader a prize. Older youth will also enjoy learning about Geocaching and go on their own geocaching adventure on Monday August 20th. Many new books for all reading levels have been purchased for the summer program.

during open library hours or calling 2872945. The first 25 registrants receive a free book bag. Library hours of operation are Monday through Thursday 11am-7pm, closed Friday and open Saturday 10am – 1pm. Libraries encourage families to support their child’s literacy skills by registering them to participate in a summer reading program.
