HBK

See You Later By Katy Wise

Contributing Writer

By the time that you have reached this page of the newspaper, I’m fairly certain that you will have noticed that this is the last issue of The Chautauqua Star being printed by Star Media Group. It’s one of those bittersweet announcements for all of us, as a new chapter starts and the current one ends. This current publication has been around for just short of a decade, being a major part of our lives, personally, for the past seven plus years. I have to warn you now that this letter is going to be personal, with a generous dose of sappiness. If you’re not interested, here’s your chance to stop reading. When my husband was first hired to work at this newspaper, I was pregnant with our first child. We had just celebrated our first anniversary a few months prior to his being hired, so many of our earlier memories of marriage involve this business in some way. Throughout the course of this paper, all three of our children were born, we moved two times, bought our first house, graduated from Bible school, and celebrated various other victories and life changes. Although I didn’t know at first that I would also get to be involved in this community staple, there was a certain tie to this endeavor that I couldn’t quite put my finger on, and honestly, I still can’t… at least not fully. This paper has had a way of bringing our community together, highlighting and bringing out the very best in our area. The focus that it has had on good, positive news, was a goal that our family stood behind, one hundred percent, and we still do. We wanted to see this paper succeed, and it was so much more than just a job. From the time we had first heard of this business, that was completely new at the time, there was this sense that we would somehow have a part to play. Though the first two interviews for my husband didn’t result in the way that we had expected, he persisted, and the third time worked like a charm, as they say.

Not too long after that, our oldest son was born, who had been born not breathing and was immediately hospitalized in the NICU at Children’s. My husband and I have both shared about this time in our lives before, and the fact that God healed him. We received so much support and love during that time, much of it being through fellow workers at this establishment. After being through that time in our life, when we almost lost our son, we lost our only car, and then my husband lost his job right after I had quit mine to stay at home with our son… there is absolutely no doubt that miracles happen. God is the only way that we made it through that season in our lives. You may have read a couple mentions of Jesus from both my husband and myself in this paper before, so it may not surprise you at all to hear this, but this time of year brings it out even more for us. Easter has everything to do with why we have our little boy right now, why we have life right now. It has everything to do with how we’re able to push into this next season with no exact certainty of what’s coming next, even though we have believed in this paper and what it stood for. This paper is one wonderful example of what can happen when people come together towards one goal. A goal that has impacted our community and connected people. I’m grateful for the connections and relationships that have been made as a result of this business. We have undoubtedly learned much about people throughout this time and were repeatedly surprised by these interactions. I had no idea when I first heard of this paper, that I would become a writer. There was always a certain love for writing that I had growing up, and I was definitely classified as a bookworm. I should have known when my friends were baffled by my love for writing essays! Thank you to all of you who have opened these pages each week, and have watched this paper grow, and more specifically to us, our children grow throughout the years of this column. We wish the new owners the very best of luck, and hope that this paper is able to continue on in Chautauqua County, and maybe even further, for as long as possible. We are so happy to have met you, in at least this one form, some of you more. It’s been a great four and a half years of writing, and a great seven and a half years of being involved in this endeavor. Don’t think that this will put an end to the writing, though. You’ll be able to find us on Facebook, under the same title, and this column will remain in the paper going forward. So for now, and as always, thanks for reading HBK, and we will see you later!
