TASTE THE RAINBOW

Hawaii in Your Home After the time of your life in paradise, it’s not uncommon to want to bring a piece of the islands home with you. But, be forewarned! Legend has it that taking home a lava rock as a souvenir will incur the wrath of the great goddess Pele. In fact, hundreds of lava rocks are reportedly sent back to Volcanoes National Park, from penitent visitors who experienced the alleged curse after swiping a rock. Instead, we suggest bringing Hawaii into your home with some gorgeous local art. Here are our picks:

At Genesis Galleries Hawaii, art lovers and collectors will find a plethora of traditional Hawaiian art, including marine life artist Wyland’s sculptures, oils and sketches; Heather Brown’s surfer girl paintings, Steven Neill’s famous vintage signs, Roy Tabora’s translucent wave paintings, and wood carvings from Craig Nichols.

At Lava Light Gallery, you’ll find incredible photographs shot from a mere feet away from flowing lava. The adventurous photographers, including gallery co-owner CJ Kale, famously dove into the waves as lava spilled into the sea around them, to capture the moment for you to enjoy forever. SPOT SOME WHALES The Big Island is known as one of the world’s best locations for whale watching cruises, so don’t miss the chance to book one for yourself. You’ll be in good hands with Hawai‘i Ocean Sports, which has been operating whale watching cruises on the Kohala coast since 1981. Their team knows where all the best whale hangouts are and the best ways to spot these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

Ditch the four wheels and see what the Kohala coast has to offer your way, via one of BikeWorks Beach and Sports’ rented bikes. Cycle by lava fields, stop for lunch, and hit the beaches, all at your own, leisurely pace. Or, if you’re looking for a group event, join one of BikeWorks community rides on Tuesdays. CATCH A FLICK Mix it up for a day and stay close to town, with a movie at Waikoloa Luxury Cinemas. Cool airconditioning, comfy, cushioned, leather chairs, and a scrumptious food menu will be the perfect way to chill out in between shopping, exploring and adventuring. This ultimate movie experience shows the latest, most buzzed-about films, and even serves up wine and cocktails to sip while you view.

Say it Right ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi is the language of the islands—and what a beautiful language it is! You probably have a few words under your belt already, such as the internationally famous “mahalo”, “aloha” and maybe even “ohana” (family), but you’re bound to encounter a few unknown phrases as you journey through the state. Here’s your mini Hawaiian language lesson for today! You use directional terms every day. Think “east” or “west”, “uptown” or “downtown”. In Hawaiʻi you’ll hear locals refer to “mauka” or “makai” in regards to where to go. What direction that means actually depends on where you are on the island! Don’t worry, though - it’s as simple as can be. Mauka means mountainward, while makai means oceanward. Easy! Example: “Come find us at the bar! We’ll be hanging out on the makai end, so we can keep an eye out for surf.”

Hawaiian Culture &

ENTERTAINMENT Lively music, song and stories fill Waikoloa Beach Resort with the enduring mana, or spirit, of Hawai‘i. In the Coronation Pavilion, see graceful hula dancers and hear the sounds of a slack key guitar or the deep resonance of ancient chants. Listen, learn and enjoy what Queens’ MarketPlace has to offer. In addition to diverse shops, restaurants and a food court, you’ll also find Hawaiian cultural performances. Experience Hawai‘i's rich heritage through music and dance at the Coronation Pavilion. Discover how ancient Hawaiian people communicated through hula with its accompanying mele or songs. Throughout the week, watch and listen to the expressive interpretations of the island's rich hula history with Aulani’s Hula Halau and Halau O Po‘ohala.

You’ll also appreciate the best of Polynesia as the hula halau, Alohi Polynesian Dance Academy, illustrates the grace of Tahitian, Maori and Hawaiian dance and music. Hawaiian Quilt Collection also offers quilt-making lessons on Sundays for a small fee. Once a month, you’re invited to bring a beach chair or mat to enjoy a free movie or see new musical talent from Hawai‘i Island on the lush lawn surrounding the Coronation Pavilion as dusk settles in. You’ll always find something to do at Queens’ MarketPlace! *Events are subject to change. Visit www.queensmarketplace.net for the latest event information.
