Our Mission
The goals and attitude Mission Team 20 choose to pursue for the upcoming year.
Within Science, Technology, and Innovation, our Mission Team has identified a gross inequality in the treatment of women in the field. Our goal is to educate ourselves on the issue of sexism in STEM, and use the information we learn to best fight against the issue.

Our Journey
Beginning with Our Mission
We started our journey with the overall goal to assist in the fight against sexism in STEM. Many members described how their male counterparts in STEM ostracized them, and they often were made to feel less than they were. As a team we wanted to face against this.
Educating
In order to gain a better understanding of the topic, the team listened to what experts on the topic were saying. The team watched a TedTalk Dr. Alexis Scott gave on remaining resilient as a woman in STEM. The team also read the United Nation's page on women's empowerment. We learned of systematic disenfranchisement of women in STEM fields.
Networking
After educating ourselves on sexism and how it impacts women in STEM, the team decided that it would be important for us to discuss with women in STEM on their own personal experiences. To do this, the team hosted a movie night to bring together women in STEM to discuss sexism and intersectionality. We then hosted a women in STEM banquet, which will be discussed more later.
"It was eye opening hearing the stories of classmates and peers discussing their stories of how they have been harassed or embarrassed intentionally in their STEM classes because they identified as women. I also really enjoyed hearing from one of the women we had at the Women in STEM banquet who worked alongside the Hidden Figures that we watched in the movie!" -

After hearing the incredible stories of the women we spoke to, we decided that the best way for our team to fight against the issue is to amplify their voices and spark a passion for STEM in elementary schools. To do this we held the women in STEM banquet, and assisted in setting up a science fair for local elementary schools.
Seeing all of the work done to motivate children to pursue STEM at the science center was truly motivational, and set a good tone for how our Mission Team wanted to give back to the STEM community.
-Nathan JayanthanAfter discussing how women are disadvantaged and hidden in STEM fields, it was decided that the best way to support women in STEM was by holding a banquet for undergraduates to network with women professionals and hear of their experiences. We wanted to provide a platform for women to join together and discuss issues they are facing.
I had an amazing time at the Women in STEM Banquet. Hearing the experiences and stories of the guest speakers about being a minority in the STEM field was extremely inspiring and motivating. As a woman in engineering myself, I was able to learn a lot from the event, not only about how to overcome adversity and barriers, but also about the realms of science that the women have created an impact in.

Suggestions for the Future
Science, Technology, and Innovation is a broad Mission with many different ways our team could support the community. In order to have the most impactful year, I suggest focusing on one impact area at the beginning of the year.
-Timothy Chase (MT Leader)My experience with Mission Team 20 has been growing with each semester. In the first semester, we used our meeting times to brainstorm and plan events we wanted to host and participate in. The Women in STEM banquet was just a suggestion I made to fulfill our group requirements but once it was actually put into place, I was extremely proud of my peers for working so hard to contact such great women in stem, plan our program, and secure a facility for our event. I really enjoyed the banquet and was inspired by so many women. I hope MT 20 and partnering mission teams can continue to run this event in the next years to come!
