WELCOME TO

CAMP HARMONY

Nestled among the hills and trees of the Laurel Highlands region of Pennsylvania is a Christ-centered camp, conference, and retreat center with rich history, strong faith, and lots of adventure. Camp Harmony is the destination of many for not only summer camp, but festivals, retreats, and other year-round events. We invite people of all ages to experience the wonder of creation and to grow in closer harmony with God, nature, and one another. Across our 112 acres, there is sure to be something for everyone! In 1924, a group of young adults from Juniata College sought a place where they could retreat from the demands of a busy world, reconnect with God through His creation, and grow both as individuals and as a community of believers. Out of their search was founded Camp Harmony as a Christian Training School for youth and young adults. They invited many others to come and do the same as they had done and now, over 90 years later, that vision and mission continues. We have remained committed to teaching Christian principles and challenging people, both young and old, in their faith at our summer camps and year-round retreats. We encourage them to grow through a variety of experiences at camp and then to share what they have learned with the world around them.

4

Each experience at Camp Harmony is unique. There is something to do in all four seasons: in summer’s warmth, autumn’s changing leaves, spring’s refreshing rains, or winter’s falling snow. We strive to create developmentally appropriate programming for all ages and abilities. Whether it’s swimming in the pool, working as a team on the high or low challenge course, hiking through the woods, or renting one of our beautiful facilities for a retreat or banquet, everyone will be sure to find exciting things to explore! In all these things and much more, though, we strive to connect all that we do to the Creator, to share His love, and to learn more about living a lifestyle of worship for God each and every day. So, you see, Camp Harmony is more than just a summer camp. We provide opportunities for individuals, children, adults, couples, and families to make memories that will last a lifetime and grow in a variety of ways. At the heart of all we do, for over 90 years, is the desire to share Christ with all who come through our gates and to bring glory to God. Whether you come to any of our year-round events, rent our facilities for your group, or send your child to camp, we hope you will also experience what God is doing at Camp Harmony!

CAMP HARMONY

PHILOSOPHY & INFORMATION Camp Harmony’s mission is to invite people of all ages to experience the wonder of creation and to grow in a closer relationship with God, nature, and one another. We strive for excellence in all we do and, as a camp, conference, and retreat center, are committed to the following goals in all we do: 1. P roviding a safe, nurturing camp community through our caring professional staff. 2. D evelopmentally appropriate participant-based experiences. 3. O pportunities for service, leadership, and personal growth. 4. E xperiential education with plenty of opportunities for discovery. We follow guidelines laid by the American Camping Association for camping regulations. All staff and volunteers have submitted clean background checks as required by Pennsylvania Law and recommended by the American Camping Association. As part of their training course, our staff complete courses to become CPR/ First Aid certified. A qualified Health Practitioner will be on the premises to dispense medications and treat any minor illness or injury. All facilitator & lifeguarding staff have completed courses to become certified in Wilderness First Aid. They have also completed all training required to be

certified and are considered highly qualified in their field of work. All of our counseling staff are at least 18 years of age or high school graduates. They are required to complete a thorough training course at the beginning of the summer. All of our Leaders-in-Training are over the age of 15, complete a thorough training course, and are directly supervised by a counseling staff member. Our Food Service & Hospitality Director is ServSafe Certified and trains every food service employee in proper food handling and preparing techniques. Our Food Service facilities and program are regularly inspected by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. Camp Harmony is owned and operated as a ministry of the Western Pennsylvania District of the Church of the Brethren. We are members in good standing with the Outdoor Ministries Association, the Laurel Highlands Visitors Bureau, the Johnstown Visitors Bureau, and the Somerset County Chamber of Commerce. We are happy to welcome and accommodate campers with special needs. Please contact us in advance so we may work through any special needs your child may have. Camp Harmony is open to all regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, or special needs.

WINTER CAMPS 2015: Kairos is about time. Not the tick-tock kind of time we are used to living in. Kairos is the beautiful kind of time where God breaks in and changes everything. These are moments when something special happens. They are moments that interrupt our status quo. They are moments when the trajectory of our journeys change forever.

Children’s Retreat Grades 2-5 $100

When God breaks in, we must take the change He creates- whatever it may be. We must accept both the work of Christ and the way of Christ. We must trust in what God is doing instead of trying to do it ourselves. And then, we must step out in faith and believe that God’s goodness will come in time.

Family Retreat March 20-22 Families of All Sizes $100 (12 & older) $75 (4-11 yrs old) $15 (3 & under)**

Youth Retreat Grades 6-12 $100

Feb. 20-22

** Families of 5 or more receive a $50 discount

At our winter retreats for children, youth, and families, we will set aside ticktock time to engage God intentionally and expect Him to break into our lives in timeless ways. Age-appropriate activities and worship experiences are planned for participants to have an EXCELLENT retreat and gain the most insight during their stay. There will be sled riding down our HUGE hill (weather permitting), games, crafts, and other exciting camp activities to engage every camper, young and old. We’ll be encouraged and challenged. We’ll be loved and changed. The moment is upon us. Don’t you think it’s about time?

SUMMER There’s so much to experience at summer camp: swimming, archery, climbing, hiking, canoeing, and that’s just the beginning! In all of this, we are also learning about God and His GREAT power. But, do you know that as His followers we also have His power? With a world as demanding, sometimes scary, and confusing as ours, we need His power to guide our way, to show us how to live in community, and to let us know we are not alone. This summer, we will be learning more about this power that comes from the Holy Spirit, God’s presence with us. The Holy Spirit is what makes us new to live with grace, forgiveness, courage, unity, joy, peace, and many other gifts. We believe everyone can be powered by the Holy

2015

Spirit, no matter how old you are, and so we have a wide variety of summer camps for all ages. Each camp is developed to be Christ-focused, developmentally appropriate according to the age group, experiential in nature, and full of lessons that campers will be able to apply to many aspects of their lives. Whether it happens over meals at the dining hall, while singing songs at AMplify, discussing scripture during Embers or Focus, or even while playing a game, making a craft, or navigating the ropes course we will be discovering how to POWER UP with the Holy Spirit during your stay at camp!

For over 90 years of ministry at Camp Harmony, God has used many people in many different ways to touch the lives of others forever. If you can give generously by faith to this ministry, we would ask that you attend this benefit dinner to give what you can to reach even more lives to the glory of God.

Camper Info & Policies Registration Information Interested in attending a camp, retreat, or event at Camp Harmony? Great! Here are some simple tips for getting you on your way.

Online Registration

Register online by visiting the Registration section of our website: www.campharmony.org. A $50 non-refundable deposit (does not apply to HalfDay Camps) paid by credit card or PayPal will be required in order to submit the registration.

Mail-In Registration

To register by mail, complete the registration form found in the back of this brochure. Send it along with the $50 non-refundable registration fee (does not apply to Half-Day Camps) to Camp Harmony’s Post Office Box address.

Age Requirements

Each camp is designed to meet the specific physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual developmental needs of each camper. Camp age requirements for summer camps are determined by the grade your camper has completed as of June 1, 2015. Please do not register for a camp that is not for your camper’s age group. Age requirements are specified on the camp description pages.

Scholarships

No one should be denied an opportunity to attend camp because of finances. Assistance is available for campers in financial need. They are given on a first-come, first-served basis. A written request must be included with the registration application in order to be considered. ALL persons applying for a scholarship are asked to pay at least a 25% portion of the registration. We also encourage campers to seek financial help from outside sources like churches, community organizations, etc. Requests MUST be made prior to arrival at camp. Requests made on the day of arrival may not be honored. Visit our website or call Executive Director Janice Kaltenbaugh to learn more about how to apply for scholarships.

Camp T-shirt & Camper Memory CDs

Each camper will receive one free summer camp t-shirt with registration. A picture memory CD of your camper’s week at Camp Harmony will be available for purchase and can be ordered in advance or at the end of the camp. Additional items may be purchased at the Camp Store.

Discounts

Each person registering for and attending more than one camp program is eligible for a discount on registration costs.

20

A 10% discount is available on all subsequent summer camps for the year. Only one discount applies (i.e. after 10% has been deducted from a camp, any additional discount may not be applied.) This discount excludes Half & Full Day Camps, which already have a discount included.

NEW! Bring-A-Friend Reward Program

Campers will receive a $25 Camp Harmony gift card for each friend they refer to attend summer camp. If a camper refers a friend to attend camp, the friend must name the person who referred them on their registration form. The referred camper must not have attended a Camp Harmony event, retreat, or camp in the past year. The camper will then receive their $25 gift card upon arrival at camp registration. The referred camper may not be receiving a Camp Harmony Scholarship. This card can be used for ANYTHING at Camp Harmony- rentals, camps, store items, etc.

Cabin Requests

Cabin requests must be made on the registration form by all campers being requested. We try our best to accommodate requests but cannot guarantee them in all cases.

Limited Space

Due to the rising demands on our camp, registrations are based on a first-come, first-serve basis. God is blessing us with more and more campers every year. Please register early to ensure your place in the camp you desire.

Important Deadlines 4/15: Summer Camp Early Registrations Due Registrations received after this date will be required to pay an additional $50 fee for their summer camp registration.

6/1: Summer Camp Attendance Review

The number of registrations received for each summer camp will be evaluated on this date to determine the viability of running the camp. Any camp deemed to have a lack of registrations will be cancelled. If your camp is canceled, your camper may reschedule to attend another camp with no additional fees or charges. Registrations will be received after this date, but camps are not guaranteed to be available.

2 Week Reservation Guideline

Reservations for ALL events must be made at least 2 weeks in advance of the date of the event. Camp Harmony reserves the right to cancel any event after this time due to lack of reservations.

Info & Policies (cont.) Arrival & Departure

Contacting Your Camper

Checking In

Camper Mail

Unless otherwise noted in your confirmation packet, summer camp campers check-in at 6:00 PM on Sunday or Wednesday at Faith Hall. Day Camps and Overnighter Camps will register at 9:00 AM. A parent or guardian responsible for each individual camper must be present at registration. Remaining camp balance, medical information, special food instructions, and camp activity requirements will be reviewed at this time and may require parent or guardian signatures. Please bring along any remaining registration forms you may not have turned in yet.

Remaining Balance

As mentioned before, a non-refundable $50 deposit is required in order to complete registration. The remaining balance of the camp (registration cost less $50 non-refundable deposit) is expected to be paid at camp check-in. Please make checks payable to Camp Harmony.

Picking Up

Departure time for many of our camps varies. Please pay close attention to appropriate check-out date and time. They are not the same for every camp experience. Campers will be picked up from their cabins and contact with the counselor must be made before leaving. We were able to keep track of them all week and we don’t want to lose them at the end!

Campers love receiving mail while at camp! We encourage family and friends of campers to send their campers mail. We recommend sending mail out Monday or Tuesday to ensure delivery before leaving Friday. You can also leave messages with a camp staff member to be delivered during the week. Camper mail is distributed during lunch each day. In the event that your child has left prior to receiving his or her mail, it will be kept in our lost and found for at least 1 month prior to their departure.

Cell Phones

Our culture has become increasingly connected, especially via cell phones. We realize that. However, we do not allow the use of cell phones while at camp because they easily become distractions. Campers are asked to leave electronics home or turn them in to us upon check-in. If a family emergency requires the need to reach your camper, you are more than able to do that. Simply call camp’s office phone and we will connect you with your camper immediately. Call 814-798-5885

Release of Minor Campers

In order to provide security for all of our campers, it is our policy to only release a camper to his or her legal guardians or parents as indicated on the registration form. If you, as a parent or legal guardian, will not be picking up your child at the conclusion of camp, please notify the camp staff during registration so that we can note it accordingly. We will release campers ONLY to individuals whom you have granted us permission to do so.

EARN YOUR BADGES AT CAMP! We review and try to include activities related to badges and accomplishments of scouting and other similar groups. If you wish to earn a related badge or achievement during your stay at camp, contact us to work out the details!

Info & Policies (cont.) Other Information & Policies Homesickness

Some campers may experience what is known as “homesickness”, a general uncomfortable feeling that may cause stress due to a new or unfamiliar situation. This situation is perfectly normal and our staff are trained in how to properly care for and comfort a camper with these feelings. We believe growth occurs when we challenge ourselves to do new things. In this light, we do not encourage calls home unless all other attempts to encourage the camper have failed.

Personal Conduct

Participants at Camp Harmony camps, retreats, and events are asked to act in such a way that is respectful to God, other campers, staff, and camp property. The Camp Board of Directors has delegated authority to the Executive Director to dismiss any camper who does not abide by these guidelines.

Policy of Modesty

As a Christ-center organization, Camp Harmony has in place a policy of modesty which extends to all camper and staff alike. This policy is in place to encourage mutual and self-respect among all campers and staff. Please keep this in mind when packing clothes for your stay at camp. Please do not pack clothing that would be considered revealing or immodest. Swim wear should also reflect this policy. We require that female campers wear a one piece swimsuit or a suit that covers their midsection in addition to conservative neck and leg cuts and properly lined. Male campers are required to wear “boxer style” swimwear with athletic support.

Medical Information & Medication

We care about the health and safety of our campers. It is among our top priorities. Because of this, we ensure that a qualified medical professional is available on camp during any camp or retreat. All medication will be kept and distributed by the Camp Medical Professional. All campers will be screened by the Camp Medical Professional during check-in. In the event of an emergency, a reasonable effort will be made to contact parents/guardians. If deemed necessary, ill or injured campers will be taken to one of several nearby medical facilities. For questions regarding insurance, please contact the Executive Director. Accidents/ illnesses occurring while at camp are filed through the parent/guardian insurance carrier.

Packing For Camp

A packing list specific to the camp your camper has registered for will be sent to you in your confirmation packet. Packing lists are also available for download from our website at www.campharmony.org. Please be sure to pack plenty of each item for the duration of the camp. Below is a list of basic items you will need for any stay at camp:

What To Bring • Bible & notebook • Bedding to fit a single mattress or sleeping bag • Pillow • Shorts (modest) • Jeans & sweatpants • Pajamas • T-shirts • Sweatshirts or light jacket • Underwear • Socks • Closed-toe shoes (2 pairs) • Sandals/flip flops & water shoes • Bug repellant & sunscreen • Bathing towels & washcloths • Beach towels • Swimsuit • Medication • Toiletries • Flashlight • Water Bottle • Store money (optional)

Challenge By Choice

Our programs are designed to encourage an internal center of control within each person by giving individuals the choice in how they want to participate. We encourage each participant to set their own goals and personal challenges. We strive to create a collaborative, cooperative, and caring environment where both physical and emotional safety are paramount and choices are made by the individual, not as a result of negative peer pressure.
