INTO THE WILD Wilderness Tanzania has opened its first luxury mobile tented camp, which will follow Serengeti National Park’s legendary Great Migration. Wilderness Usawa Serengeti will move with the herds throughout the year, with two campsites set up in various key locations on the migration route. The new camp operation offers the perfect balance between the action and drama of the migration, and the

quieter, more remote areas where the camps will be set up, within the Serengeti’s designated walking zones, allowing guided walks to begin directly from camp. Game drives, birding and stargazing will also be available. Designed in collaboration with Luxury Frontiers and Charlotte Berney Design, who incorporated locally designed and manufactured furniture, the solar powered camp features six tents with 280-degree views over the surrounding plains, wide shaded areas, and spacious en-suites.

Situated within an iconic Virgil Dante Cizzio-designed building that first opened in 1929, this lavish urban retreat, part of Accor’s Handwritten Collection, boasts just 82 beautifullyappointed Art Deco-style guest rooms, each of which is dressed in exuberant golden mustard tones and Jarrah wood accents as well as custom furniture, Calacatta and blue Roma marble, and bold amber onyx stone. Guests will be as especially excited by the hotel’s dining options, which include Bar Morris, an intimate 40-seat Art Deco-inspired wine bar featuring a day-to-night menu focused on simple, seasonal produce, infused with Italian influences, as well as a cocktail menu by Tom Bulmer from The Social Spirits that incorporates Australian and Italian ingredients – be sure to try The Ocean’s Depth Martini, made with house spiced brine.

NATURAL SELECTION OPENS MOKOLWANE IN BOTSWANA If you’re headed to the Okavango Delta, you can now return from safari drives to the luxurious accommodation of Mokolwane, the newest safari camp by Natural Selection. Situated in the 200,000-hectare Xudum concession, one of the largest private concessions in the Delta, the camp is perfect for families and small groups. Just seven tents are perched above the savannah, with each boasting an ensuite bathroom and elegant interiors, while separate dining and living spaces are nearby. It’s the ideal base from which to explore the unique corner of the Delta, which is home to big herds of elephant, buffalo, and all the Okavango’s predators,

CT TRAVELLER | 樂遊旅人 Although she would almost certainly deny the comparison, professor of maritime archaeology and underwater cultural heritage Sarah Ward is the modernday equivalent of the fictitious Lara Croft, only her explorations are submarine rather than subterranean. Recognised as one of Asia Pacific’s most distinguished and experienced experts in the field of underwater cultural heritage, Ward has surveyed shipwrecks in Scotland, dived drowned landscapes in Denmark, investigated maritime infrastructure in Ireland, and was – incredibly – crowned ‘Moon Queen’ in Columbia’s Panamanian jungle by the local Kuna chief. “Travel is a natural part of what I do, and archaeology is a very tactile field of study,” she says. “It’s not something you can gain experience from by poring through dusty old books. You must be there, on site, getting your hands dirty.” Based at Dalian Maritime University in China for the last five years, Ward describes herself as a “water baby” having grown up in a seafaring family. “I began exploring underwater from a very early age, especially Brisbane’s famous Tangalooma wrecks and my travels today, predictably, take me to sites where new shipwrecks have been discovered or older ones are being further studied.” Ward is just back home in Dalian after a whirlwind mission to South Africa with the National Centre for Archeology, a kind of trip more akin to a rock star than a modest, sun and sea-loving girl from Brisbane’s Bayside.

“It was a lightning-fast visit to Addis Ababa, in Ethiopia and then Cape Town, all in less than five days, so many of these trips can be quite intense. Fly in, conduct site inspections, deliver a presentation or three, meet the hosts, grab a bite to eat and fly out again. But I love the opportunity to linger in a destination and really do a thorough exploration, like I’ve done in Cambodia as director of the country’s Underwater Cultural Heritage Cooperation Program.” What’s been one of her most memorable trips? “To this day I still find it hard to surpass our work documenting the 2,000-year-old Roman wreck at Kizilburun off the coast of Turkey,” Ward recalls with obvious glee. “With land-based archaeology, you jump for joy if you find a grain of ancient barley or a relic of glass the size of your fingernail, but with Kizilburun we were finding intricately carved statuettes and hand-carved columns destined for some building site in the vast Roman Empire. That was an enormous privilege and incredibly exciting.”

Ward’s next big project will see her working with UNESCO’s World Heritage. “The massive Three Gorges Project impacted the major rivers of China and required lots of work to preserve cultural artefacts along the way. Baiheliang (White Crane Ridge) is located in the middle of the Yangtze River and not only contains important cultural material but also scientific records from the ancient Chinese periods.” “Here in China, we have thousands of years of history, much of which is unknown to the West. Since my time here (in Dalian) it’s been immensely rewarding to study this fascinating heritage and work with authorities to preserve it and help make it accessible to both tourists and academics. Naturally this involves lots of travel around China, particularly the coastal regions.” Like most of us, Ward, a certified UKHSE and ADAS commercial diver and Fellow of the Explorer’s Club,

admits she loves a hotel or airline upgrade, especially when headed on an archeological dive. “Long haul economy is not practical with my work, so I like to travel in Premium Economy as a minimum, with access to a lounge because there are always notes to review and reports to finalise. Because I have such a busy schedule, it’s important to be properly rested and be ready to hit the ground - or water - running when important hosts have expectations. FOUNDERS’ ADVENTURES | 創建者歷奇 Having lived in Saudi Arabia for the first two years of our marriage in the early ‘80s, at a time when international non-pilgrimage tourism to the Kingdom was not allowed, we were delighted to re-visit the country recently to take advantage of its opening up in 2019. Tourism is now an important component of the Saudi Government’s Vision 2030 plan to diversify its economy away from oil. While international arrivals are still dominated by pilgrims, a growing number of non-pilgrims are now discovering the country’s astounding historic sites, stunning landscapes, aromatic Arabic cuisine, and exotic cultural attractions. Beginning with the food, our first discovery was lunch in Riyadh’s Suhail restaurant, where we enjoyed authentic and delicious local dishes – jareesh soup, pumpkin salad, mutabbaq, and lamb kabsa – in a unique, arty setting. Riyadh’s high-end hotels, meanwhile, are steadily growing in number and currently include the Hyatt, Four Seasons, and Ritz-Carlton.

FOUNDERS’ ADVENTURES | 創建者歷奇 Moving on, our next discovery was the futuristic megaproject called NEOM* in the northwestern province of Tabuk, next to the Red Sea and across the Gulf of Aqaba from Egypt, and another component of the nation’s Vision 2030. While currently not much more than a building site, the plans include a linear city, The Line, which is planned to be 70km long and 200 metres wide. The car-free city will house nine million residents within walkable communities, with all basic services within a five-minute walking distance. With an emphasis on tourism, NEOM features two attractions: Shushah Island, just off the coast, will offer three luxury resorts, a marina, villas, a beach club, and an underwater museum and coral garden. The nearby Hisma Desert offers an open museum of unusual scenic and spectacular rock formations, along with the occasional encounter with a camel herder. Yet another surprise component of NEOM will be Trojena, an outdoor ski resort in the nearby mountains and the first sub-zero snow destination in the Gulf. The project includes a manmade lake and high-end residential offerings, five-star hospitality units, fine dining options, retail outlets, and entertainment, plus more than 3,500 hotel rooms and serviced apartments. The resort is planned as a yearround mountain destination offering hiking, kayaking, water sports, skiing, ziplining, an alpine coaster, mountain biking, skateboarding, climbing, snow sports, and ice skating. Driving southward from Tabuk brought us to Wadi Al-Disah, the “valley of palm trees”. In contrast to the surrounding desert, it’s a lush 15km-long steep-sided canyon with running water where we encountered picnickers and a couple of youths on horseback. Although earmarked for further tourism-related development, we experienced it in its natural fullness with only a handful of other visitors. 42

The city served as the Nabateans first capital, with nearby Hegra being the largest conserved site of the Nabataeans south of Petra in Jordan. It features well-preserved monumental tombs with decorated facades dating from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD and some 50 inscriptions and cave drawings.

Not to be missed, the Tayebat Museum in Al-Balad, Jeddah’s old city, contains a fascinating and comprehensive collection of Islamic history and cultural artifacts representing the various tribes that make up Saudi Arabia’s ethnically diverse population. We were especially privileged to be shown around by Abeer Abu Suleiman, Saudi Arabia’s first female tour guide, who is passionately dedicated to conserving the area and its culture. There is no shortage of luxury accommodation here, as Jeddah’s hotels include the Shangri-La, Rosewood, Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, and Assila. We should also mention the emerging cruising opportunities in the Red Sea, with cruise ports opening along Saudi’s coast and the outstanding opportunities for scuba diving among the thriving marine life, multi-coloured reefs, and uninhabited islands. In a short stay, we only touched the surface of Saudi Arabia’s tourism attractions and the enormous potential that exists for becoming a major attraction for discerning travellers with a genuine desire to experience firsthand a country playing such an important role in the economic and cultural development of the rest of the world. Some folks may have reservations, but our experience was that women – especially young women – are playing an active and positive 44

role in the implementation of the nation’s ambitions.

That said, the swimming pool in Riyadh’s Hyatt Regency was gender segregated, with separate timings for men and women, while there are also two spas and gyms, one each for men and women. Nevertheless, the younger generation generally are aware that they will be the main architects of the country’s future and they appear ready to take up the challenge with confidence and pride. Finally, it might also be worth pointing out that the possession, consumption, or manufacture of alcohol is illegal in the kingdom. According to Princess Haifa bint Mohammed, assistant minister of tourism, Saudi Arabia doesn’t need to legalise alcohol for tourists and has no plans to do so. She insists that the ban on alcohol has not affected tourism. “We have been outperforming globally in tourism with what we currently have to offer today,” she says. Following our recent trip to the country, we’d have to agree. *The name “NEOM” is a portmanteau. The first three letters form the Ancient Greek prefix Neomeaning “new”. The fourth letter, M, is the first letter of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s name, and the first letter of the Arabic word for future “Mustaqbal”.

My favourite desert experience was in the Hisma Desert, located near Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia, which boasts an array of remarkable rock formations sculpted by erosion over millions of years. During our recent visit, we had an unexpected encounter with a camel herder who employs a unique language to communicate with his animals. This cultural practice has been recognised by UNESCO and included in its list of intangible cultural heritage so it was a very special experience.

As one of the least populated countries in the world, Namibia might very well be the opposite of Hong Kong’s hustle and bustle. Throw a gigantic coastline desert into the mix – along with some of the world’s tallest sand dunes – and you have quite the unique landscape. Africa runs in my blood, and I’m a firm believer you need to experience an authentic safari at least once in your life. However, after my recent visit to Namibia’s vast desert landscape, I’m recalibrating my African bucket list recommendation to include this soul-cleansing locale.

Apart from that, activities like sand dune dining, and nature walks complimented my overall experience, and that’s the reason I always recommend my guests to stay there when they visit the UAE.

Dinner at Dinarjat could have been lifted from One Thousand and One Nights. Set within the medina, guests are led into a refurbished riad by a man with a lamp. New global research by communication technology company Communications Specialist indicates that 94 per cent of senior executives at high-end, luxury hotels expect the sector to increase its focus on sustainability over the next three years, and 22 per cent believe there will be a dramatic increase. More than half (46 per cent) also expect that there will be a substantial increase in the sector’s focus on working with local suppliers, while 84 per cent are predicting growth in the luxury hotel sector’s use of renewable energy, and 86 per cent expect an increased focus on removing disposable plastics from their operations between now and 2026. Named most sustainable hotel group in the world by S & P Global in 2022, Meliá opened the group’s first carbon-neutral hotel in the Balearics, Grand Melia Villa Le Blanc in Menorca, last year, which uses biomass heating for its boilers, solar panels for energy production and geothermal energy to air condition the property. “With Villa Le Blanc we’ve established a net zero hotel prototype that will certainly be a reference to be followed in future construction or refurbishment projects of our hotels,” says Meliá’s vice president for sustainability, Lourdes Ripoll. “To date, we’ve incorporated sustainable construction criteria into all our projects, such as the use of efficient technology and measures to reduce our consumption, circularity plans and so on. In addition, styrofoam and the plastic layers of slippers provided in-room are recycled to fill bean bags for other Alila properties in Bali.

Over at Alila Kothafiru Maldives, meanwhile, enhanced recycling and waste management practices like converting paper products and vegetable waste into fertiliser, diversified energy sourcing, and sustainable water practices reduce overall consumption. Likewise, Aman has done more than most to embrace eco-friendly practices, supporting farmers by purchasing local produce and using fairly-traded, cagefree and free-range products, while all basins and showers are equipped with low-flow systems to conserve water. At Aman Tokyo, meanwhile, chef Musashi Hiroyuki grows his own rice less than two hours from the Japanese capital, which is also used to make sake.

SUSTAINABILITY | 堅守永續 Another hotel group beating the sustainability drum is Six Senses, with resorts bottling their own water in refillable glass bottles and using natural materials to substitute everything from plastic straws to toothbrushes. In 2022, the group helped more than 120,000 people gain access to clean drinking water and sanitation and planted 2,020 trees.
