Years of Service: 1992 - 2022

In 1992, when the Charlottesville Free Clinic launched, 38 million Americans were uninsured. Studies indicated that lack of insurance led to worse health outcomes for patients. Drs. Mo Nadkarni and Paul DeMarco aimed to level the playing field by establishing a clinic that provided high-quality healthcare at no cost to uninsured community members.

NowOver the past 30 years, the Free Clinic’s patients’ needs have become more complex. We now offer over a dozen specialty clinics, integrate mental health services with medical care, provide comprehensive dental services and support robust internship and externship programs.

In 2022, the Free Clinic is on track to treat nearly 3,000 medical, mental health and dental patients and dispense 18,000 prescriptions. All of these services are supported by some 500 volunteers who commit their time and skills to care for our patients. Your investment in our work gives us the staying power and determination to serve our community todayand for the next 30 years. Thank you for your investment in the Charlottesville Free Clinic.

By the end of its first year, the Free Clinic had treated 557 individuals and dispensed 768 prescriptions. More than 120 community members had donated their time and skills to treat our patients.

NextIn the near future, we anticipate a swell in uninsured community members when the federally mandated COVID Public Health Emergency expires and thousands of Virginians are dis-enrolled from Medicaid as a result. We must be prepared to handle an influx of new patients.

At the same time, we are committed to expanding our definition of health. We will work collaboratively with local agencies addressing food security and other “social determinants of health” that contribute to our patients’ overall well-being.

In 1992, the Charlottesville Free Clinic had an operating budget of $39,000. This year, thanks to your support, we were able to dedicate over $2 million to serve 2,500 patients over 7,500 visits.

New in 2022

Mental Health

We expanded our mental health services thanks to a partnership with the Virginia Telemental Health Initiative. This pilot project pairs pre-licensed mental health providers with Free Clinic patients via telehealth. These supervised providers earn their licensure requirements while allowing us to enhance our capacity. This initiative adds to services we currently provide via our staff, contract and volunteer mental health professionals.

Oral Health

As community gatherings resumed, our Dental Clinic participated in numerous community events, including the Latinx Health Fair and the Chihamba/ African American Cultural Arts Festival. Our clinic

representatives provided basic dental education, distributed toothbrushes and scheduled appointments on-the-spot for community members who otherwise would have gone without dental care.

Community Health

2022 was the first full year for our pilot project, WellAWARE, a partnership of the Free Clinic, Central Virginia Health Services and UVA. WellAWARE places community health workers (CHW) in medically underserved neighborhoods to help connect residents with health care and services that contribute to wellbeing, referred to as “social determinants of health.” CHWs are trusted members of these neighborhoods who help empower residents to improve their health.

Saving Lives and Livelihoods

Soon after launching Mudhouse Coffee in downtown Charlottesville, Lynelle developed alarming health complications. As a startup business owner, she couldn’t afford health insurance. Fortunately, a resourceful friend directed her to the Charlottesville Free Clinic. Her first appointment revealed a serious diagnosis that required immediate attention. The Free Clinic arranged for Lynelle to receive life-saving treatment that, without the Free Clinic, would have been entirely out of reach. While Mudhouse grew, Lynelle continued to benefit from the Free Clinic as her primary care provider for the next several years. Lynelle attributes the care she received from the Free Clinic as instrumental to her personal and professional success. Although she now has health insurance, she always reflects on that time in her life. “I felt like I was in the best hands. The Free Clinic made me feel like I wasn’t alone and that everything was going to be okay.”

Restoring Dignity

Dina first came to the Charlottesville Free Clinic’s dental clinic after an unsuccessful search for dental care in the Harrisonburg area, where she was staying at a Salvation Army shelter. She had not received dental care in many years and was in constant pain. The Free Clinic addressed Dina’s immediate needs and provided compassionate education on oral health maintenance.

Dina notes that despite being homeless, she has always felt welcomed and valued as a Free Clinic patient.

Being unhoused creates additional barriers for Dina to manage her dental care. The Free Clinic staff and volunteers helped her develop a preventative care plan around these barriers. Dina is now pain-free, more confident, and she is prioritizing her dental health. About the Free Clinic, Dina says, “these people are so important to me…I always feel seen.”

As the only safety net dental provider in our area, demand for our services continue to increase.

30th Anniversary Benefit Concert

Fundraising events like our annual Benefit Concert are an important revenue stream. Thanks to sponsors, donors and concert-goers, we raised $300,000 in celebration of our 30th anniversary at this year’s event featuring the extraordinary Brandi Carlile. Sponsors enjoyed a pre-party at the CODE Building, a raucously fun processional down the mall led by Elby Brass and an evening of spectacular music at the Pavilion.
