RURAL VIEWS: Sheep farm economics
JOYCE WYLLIE
“Mary had a little lamb,” so the nursery rhyme goes. However, this season is not the stuff of nursery rhymes.
Kaihoka had 4,282 lambs docked, vaccinated and earmarked at spring tailing time, staying with their mothers until about Christmas.
Timing of farm management is not the same every year because seasons differ. Farmers always assess many factors before making decisions. Once that decision is made, the job is done – no going back.
Dairy farmers put milk in the vat every day. Milk is collected, processed at the factory and product sold. The company sets the price depending on global auctions and overseas markets. Farmers are paid during the season, providing regular income (except for winter months).
The situation is different for sheep farming. Wool sales don’t count, unfortunately; currently shearing costs are more than return for the wonderful, sustainable, renewable, microfibrefree product. Lamb sales are the main sheep farm income. That means how, when, and who to sell those lambs to is the big decision in the farming calendar. Again, no two seasons are the same, and changing factors both on- and off-farm are considered. Weather is obviously important. Summer dry with reducing feed means deciding whether to sell lambs earlier or de-stock ewes or cattle.
Seasonal factors aren’t just about the home farm though. If lambs aren’t ready to go to the works, they can be sold “store” for another farmer to “finish”. Store price is set on expected works price and varies with supply/demand. If many districts are dry, with thousands of lambs on the market, then prices are low. In good seasons with plenty of grass, finishing farms looking for lambs are prepared to pay more.
Freezing works space for booking lambs is often an issue, especially in a dry season. Covid and staff shortages have reduced efficiency at many plants. Farmers can’t always expect lambs to go next week.

Value of lambs at the works is a major factor in lamb sale decision. Store price varies due to factors within New Zealand, while works price mainly depends on factors outside New Zealand in markets overseas: better prices at Easter; covid in China reduces demand; varying exchange rates; drought in Australia; shipping issues; and things out of farmer and processor control.
Our works company releases the updated schedule weekly. This season, prices are way down, and Friday’s email wasn’t exciting. On 22 May 2022, a 17kg lamb earned $144.14, but dropped disappointingly. A series of reductions means that a 17kg lamb is now worth $108.44.

Early January, we contemplated all aspects and made a decision. With no reliable crystal ball, we were influenced by updates from the company: “global markets remain challenged”, “unfavourable foreign exchange rate impacting pricing”, “high global inflation levels continue to affect consumer buying habits”, “erosion of disposable income”, “people cautious around social gatherings”, and “frequency of out-of-home dining is reducing”.
Each year is different and this season we sold all our lambs store in early January, trucked out and now grazing on farms near Nelson and in Canterbury. Less mobs to drench, less risk of facial eczema or fly strike, and ewes fed well, as we look forward to mating.
Sadly, each lamb was worth $25 less than last year. A big hit to our income, as costs continue to rise. It has rained, grass supply is good, but we think it was a good call.
Other sheep farmers will be looking at autumn lamb selling issues. Every situation is different, and they may make different choices. From 4,282 lambs, we have a few smaller ones left and 800 replacement ewe hoggets growing up.
