humor, humanity, and pathos as is the case with any role on stage, but they must also do so while mastering language that is rich and complex, and frankly daunting to contemporary sensibilities. Latin’s cast achieved this level of performance with great aplomb, which speaks to the level of dedication, imagination, and talent that the theater students bring to the stage.
PARLIAMENTARY PIZZA (26) The Middle School Model United Nations team participates in the second annual CHARMUN Parliamentary Procedure Pizza event hosted by Cannon School on October 27. The event is designed to introduce student delegates to parliamentary procedure, which they will put into action during future Model UN conferences. Congratulations to seventh grader Ethan Li, who was recognized with an Honorable Mention. KRZESICKI SELECTED (27) Violinist Tatiana Krzesicki ’16 is accepted into the 2015 National Association for Music Education’s All-National Honors Symphony Orchestra. This select group of students represents the very best of music students from all 50 states. Each student must have ranked sufficiently high in his or her own All-State Orchestra before being invited to audition. These exceptional musicians gathered in Nashville, Tennessee, on October 28 to showcase their expert musicianship. Students rehearsed at the Opryland Hotel and performed at a gala concert at the historic Grand Ole Opry House during the 2015 National Association for Music Education Conference.
FORENSICS TEAM NAMED TO 200 CLUB (28) The Charlotte Latin’s forensics team earns significant recognition from its membership in the National Speech & Debate Association’s prestigious 200 Club. Students earn points, and advanced degrees of membership based on those points, for tournament competition and service-related activities. Because the team members accumulated more than 200 degrees during the 2014-15 academic year, Latin ranks among the top 7.5% of schools nationwide. This milestone demonstrates outstanding commitment to teaching students essential life skills, including speaking, listening, writing, research, and organizational skills. EL DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS (29) Señor Irwin’s Spanish I classes transform into a day of authentic and exciting celebration - full of the sights, sounds, smells, and even tastes of El Día de los Muertos (“The Day of the Dead”) on October 28. Seventh and eighth grade students engaged exclusively in conversational Spanish while experiencing the products, practices, and perspectives of this cultural pillar of Mexico and other Spanishspeaking countries. Parents volunteered to serve authentic food and helped the students decorate skulls to mark this festive occasion.
BOOK CLUB GOES VIRAL (30) Charlotte Latin parent and young adult author Brendan Reichs visits the sixth grade Book Club on November 4 to discuss the Virals series he co-authored with his mother, author Kathy Reichs. Students brought their lunch to the Carolinas Reading Room and enjoyed cake and conversation with Reichs.
