The 2009 Season Ahead Charlotte 49ers Soccer

The Charlotte 49ers Athletic Media Relations Department sat down with third-year head coach Jeremy Gunn to get his thoughts on the 49ers men’s soccer program and the 2009 season. Last season, the 49ers enjoyed the program’s first national rankings since 1998. Charlotte won 12 games and three regular-season tournaments in 2008. The 49ers have won 24 games, captured three regular-season tourna- is always extremely tough with three teams from the conference making the NCAA ments titles, reached the finals of the A-10 Tournament and been nation- Tournament last season and we could have very easily been a fourth. I’m just really excited about the upcoming season. schedule is always going to be very difficult, but what we have changed is the nonThe first year was an unknown quantity and we had such a thin squad that it was mostly about performing the best that we could and we did very well with that. In the second year we had a lot more players and we had a tremendous season. We fell a little bit short at the end of the year after we had performed so well, but we suffered many injuries and ran out of some steam - especially due to relying on so many freshmen. Now I feel that we are going to have the strongest squad depth and the most experience since I have been at CharDuring Gunn’s time at Charlotte, the 49ers have reached lotte so hopefully the A-10 Tournament Championship game, appeared we can set the sights in the national polls and captured three regular-season real high. tournament titles.

if we had enough options at certain positions. I’m really hoping that this year I will be losing sleep over our depth chart unlike the last couple of years where selections were pretty straightforward. This season I feel we will have competition at every position. So the hope is as we go through this season that players can really compete for minutes which will keep the whole squad fresher and a little bit hungrier.

must figure out how you are going to adjust to compensate for the players you have lost. You also have to decide what your new strengths are based on your new squad. Salvaggione led the team up front and set the pace where he relied on getting great passes from Andres Cuero so he will be sorely missed. Last season, Andres had a tremendous four goals with six assists last year until he got injured. He has the ability to season. score as well as create for other people so he will certainly be one of the keys to our attack. Evan James, who showed flashes of brilliance last year, is extremely hungry and I think that he can double his goals total from last season. T.J. Beaulieu, who transferred from Old Dominion, was our leading scorer in the spring and has some of the same qualities as Chris. He is going to frighten defenses and I guarantee that he will score goals. We are also looking at Josh Norwood playing up front. He is a very physical presence and extremely hardworking . He is great at harassing defenders. Jennings Rex could also see time up front after showing really well in the preseason.

The 49ers return nine starters and 15 letterwinners off a 2008 team that appeared in several national polls. What are your thoughts on the depth of this year’s squad? Our depth will be a big help this year. In the past I didn’t feel as

After winning 12 games in each of the last two seasons, what are your goals for this season? At the end of the season we always want to be in the Atlantic 10 Tournament so that we can contend for the Championship and a bid to the NCAA Tournament. But our main focus is to take one thing at a time and the first thing will be to have a good preseason that will set a good foundation for the season. Then we want to perform well in our non-conference games, hopefully giving us momentum heading in A-10 play. After every game you reassess your goals and you always hope that they go up instead of going lower. We need to make sure we are peaking at the end of the season.

The 49ers men’s soccer program has made five appearances in the NCAA Cup. What steps Tournament and Charlotte reached the 1996 College do you think the program needs to take return to the NCAA Tournament? It is as simple as winning games and outscoring your opponents. We showed last year that when we are playing very well we can play with anyone; especially in some of the early season games when we had our best lineups on the field. Even after we took some key injuries we took Maryland, the 2008 National Champions, to overtime on their home field, so we showed that we can compete with absolutely anybody in the country. I think the main focus for us will be keeping healthy and staying hungry and with the tough schedule we will have to be mentally tougher than in years past.

How will the 49ers tough non-conference schedule effect the 49ers play in Atlantic 10? I think it is going to make us very tough because by changing the schedule we are on the road a little bit more which always stacks the odds against you. Not only are we playing a tougher schedule than previous years but we are also playing more road games which is going to be a tough test for the guys. The reality is that if we can weather the storm and keep making progress throughout the season by the time we reach A-10 play we will have answered a lot of questions and concerns. We need to stay confident, knowing no matter what happens in the first half of the season we are going to be ready for a really tough conference battle.

The 49ers will be without the services of Chris Salvaggione, a semifinalist for the Hermann Award and the A-10 Offensive Player of the Year, who was a senior last season. However the 49ers return several talented forwards led by junior Andres Cuero and A-10 All-Rookie team selection Evan James. What are your thoughts on the forwards? With every team you have you

fantastic. I was looking through the media guides from about 15 years ago and that’s how the schedule looked back then, and those teams were always ranked. Their aerial ability and maturity was beyond their years. Nathan Mathers started every game as a freshman and sophomore but struggled a little last year and didn’t really get to fight for a position. He will be back more determined than ever and will afford us three first choice center backs. Newcomers Nate Badke is an upcoming center back, and Anthony Perez can play either centrally or at full-back. Hopefully both can compete with the older players to get on the field. At right back position, we will have to find a way to replace the creativity of Ryan Swaim. Alexander Deitz played consistently through the spring and will be pushing to make the position his. Freshman Robert May will also compete for time there. Redshirt freshman Justin Tucker has showed great defensive qualities and composure at left back. He has slotted in perfectly. Fans at Transamerica Field see fluent passing movement with a purpose. We are always looking to score. He has a great combative style. This season, we have five central midfielders to pick from which really gives us depth. On the right side, we have Adam Gross who had a tremendous last year scoring goals as well as creating. He also had a standout season in the PDL this summer, and has really developed into a complete player. Julien BrownLatham, who redshirted last year due to injury, was able to get going in the spring and is very attackminded. On the other side we have Isaac Caughran who had a tremendous freshman year for us. He can possess the ball and has become more assertive going forward. Local product Donnie Smith, a left-footed left midfielder, is expected to add to the midfield. He showed his class during the academy season and was named the MVP of the North Carolina East-West All-Star Game.

Dear 49ers Soccer Family, Friends and Fans, The past two seasons have been an incredible success playing quick, exciting soccer on our way to gaining national recognition. With nine starters returning we now greet the 2009 season with great anticipation and excitement. Our hope is to continue our climb towards conquering the Atlantic 10 Conference and competing in the NCAA Tournament. When you arrive at Transamerica Field we hope that you will see some of the best college soccer in the country. In 2009, the Niners will face our toughest schedule yet; our non-conference schedule is packed with national powers, while the Atlantic 10 boasts the strongest competition ever. We will be relying on our ever increasing depth and experience as we lock horns day in day out with the country’s finest. Off the field our student-athletes have been highly successful in the classroom and very hardworking in the community. Throughout the year we endeavor to stretch our team in everything they do. Our goals are quite simple: study and learn, play hard, be an ambassador for Charlotte, and then graduate ready for new challenges having enjoyed every minute of your collegiate experience. The Coaching Staff Head Coach Jeremy Gunn

At Fort Lewis College... Before taking over the reins of the 49ers men’s soccer program, Gunn spent eight years as head coach at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. He guided the Skyhawks to three NCAA Division II Championship games in those eight years, including each of the last two years. Fort Lewis won the 2005 NCAA National Championship and finished as the NCAA runner-up in 2006 and 1999. Gunn was named Div. II National Coach of the Year in 2005 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) after leading the Skyhawks to the National Championship and an unbeaten 22-0-1 season. “We are thrilled to have someone of Jeremy’s caliber leading our program,” said Director of Athletics Judy Rose. “We had tremendous interest in this position from all over the country and the quality of applicants was very strong. Jeremy has enjoyed immense success as a head coach and is driven to bring that type of success to Charlotte. He was highly-successful as a player who has a great passion for the game and high expectations for our program.” A 1993 graduate of California State University-Bakersfield, Gunn had been head coach at Fort Lewis for eight years, winning six Rocky Mountain Conference (RMAC) championships, three NCAA Mid-West Regional titles and advancing to the NCAA National Championship game three times. He was named the 2005 NSCAA Div. II National Coach of the Year and the Mid-West Region Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2005. He boasts an eight-year record of 123-35-17 and led the Skyhawks to the RMAC Championship in each of the last three years. In 2006, the Skyhawks posted a 21-2-1 record, finishing second in the 2006 NCAA Tournament and second in the NSCAA national poll. The Skyhawks were led by Daktronics Div. II National Player of the Year John Cunliffe, who scored a school record 29 goals. The three-time all-America scored 75 goals in his four-year career. A five-time RMAC Coach of the Year, Gunn began his coaching career at his alma mater as an assistant coach in 1993. He served as an assistant coach with California State-Bakersfield’s men’s and women’s soccer programs from 1993-1999. Cal-State Bakersfield won the 1997 NCAA Div. II National Championship and advanced to the 1995 NCAA Final Four. While serving as the men’s assistant coach, Gunn also performed duties as the acting Head Women’s coach during the women’s program’s first two seasons. Gunn was named CCAA conference women’s coach of the year having led the Roadrunner women to a conference championship and national ranking in only their second season. Gunn’s Mentors... Gunn attributes much of his success to the great mentors that he has had during his coaching career. At Califormia State-Bakersfield he spent ten years with a former NSCAA coach of the year, Simon Tobin. “When I arrived as a player at Cal-State the team had struggled to survive – Coach Tobin had inherited a team that had been 1-59 in conference,” Gunn said. “Ten years later we had won five conference titles and a National Championship. I had the invaluable experience of being a part of something growing from start to finish. I learned the value of immense hard work, dedication and a sheer desire and ambition to be the best.”

Coach Ike Gardner Steve Parker Bob Warming Frank Kohlenstein John Tart Jeremy Gunn Totals

Moving on to Fort Lewis College, Gunn found U.S. National Staff Sports Psychologist, Dr. Dan Friegang as a mentor. “Dano was incredible in helping me to mature as a leader and communicator, as well as teaching our players how to make the most of their abilities,” Gunn said. “Coaches often emphasize and understand the physical training of athletes, but I felt our players benefited so much more from becoming mentally strong preparing for and coping with the stress and excitement of high level competition. Our work with Dano not only enhanced our performance on the field, but also translated into our student-athletes being successful, happy, confident people in general.” The biggest coaching influence on Gunn’s career came recently working for three years with former Arsenal Football Club of England Youth Coach, Andy McDermid. “It was quite humbling working with someone who has coached at one of the biggest professional clubs in the world,” Gunn said. “Andy’s knowledge and experience in the game are second to none in the United States, and so I couldn’t have wished for a better education in coaching. Through Andy’s guidance I really felt we created a far superior training environment than what most collegiate players experience.” Gunn also draws experience from a highly successful playing career. Growing up in England he was a youth player at Grimsby Town F.C. and Scunthorpe United F.C., while representing the North Region as an English Schoolboy. A first team all-American at Cal-State Bakersfield, Gunn played professionally from 1993-95 with the Chico Rooks Pro Soccer Club in Chico, Calif., the North Bay Breakers in Rohnert Park, Calif.; and in 1998 with the Nashville (Tenn.) Metros and the Charleston (S.C.) Battery of what is now called the United Soccer League (formerly the A-League). Community Involvement... Gunn has already shown a great commitment to developing youth soccer in the Charlotte area. The team is very visible with coaching camps and youth clinics, while Gunn and his staff are all involved in the United States National Academy Program. “Our commitment to youth soccer is important for a number of reasons,” Gunn said. “We want our student-athletes to be quality role models, and hope that in turn we will gain greater community support. At the older ages I feel it is important that we share the “Charlotte Way” so that college prospects can judge the excitement surrounding our program for themselves.” Now, at Charlotte, Gunn is excited to put his wealth of experience into practice in a new environment with new challenges. The opponents and the geography have changed for Gunn, but the philosophies that have taken him to five final fours will stay the same. “Many players and coaches feel that you have to make the choice between being a hard working winner or just having fun and enjoying yourself,” Gunn said. “It is my job as a head coach to allow players to train and play in an environment where they can do both.” The Harrogate, England native graduated from CSU-Bakersfield with a degree in Business Administration, Management Information Systems. He earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Management Information Systems, in 1999 from CSU-Bakersfield.

David Schlee Memorial Award

David Schlee was Charlotte’s first-ever four-year letter winner, a key figure in Charlotte’s rapid soccer development. From the initial year that the 49ers fielded a team (1976), when the program struggled to a 3-10 record, to the year he graduated (1979) and helped the Mean Green post a 16-7-1 record, Schlee was always ready to go, ready to make the extra tackle or extra run. The soccer program is earning national attention and Schlee’s a winner who will be remembered as a dedicated individual who helped lay the groundwork for the 49ers’ success. Schlee was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident on the eve of the 1980 Sun Belt Conference Tournament. An annual memorial award in his name has been established, thanks primarily to former Athletic Foundation Board of Directors’ member Dick Dunn and his son, David, a three-year letterwinner. An award is presented at the end of each year to the 49er soccer player that best exemplifies David Schlee’s desire to succeed.

The Atlantic 10 Charlotte 49ers Soccer

On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 - the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph’s University, Saint Louis University, Temple University, and Xavier University. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner’s Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 1,162 student-athletes in the Fall 2008 while 1,164 were named to the Spring 2009 Honor Roll. The league sponsors Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports and honors one student-athlete per sport as the A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate scholarship grants to qualified student-athletes. In 2000-09, 182 student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition, while Charlotte’s Lamarra Currie, Christa Dominick of La Salle, St. Bonaventure’s Katelyn Murray and David Zenk of George Washington received postgraduate scholarship grants. The Atlantic 10 Conference had 50 teams among the 767 Division I sports teams honored by the NCAA with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. These teams posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. This represents an increase of 16 teams from a year ago and ranked the league fifth among 31 Division I Conferences. In 19 of the 21 sports sponsored by the Atlantic 10, the league’s APR was at or above the conference average nationally according to the most recent data released by the NCAA. Moreover, 75 A-10 teams attained a perfect score in the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate Report. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of nearly 74 million people within its geographic footprint of eight states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this season: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s golf, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball. 2008-09 REVIEW For the 15th time in Conference history and sixth since 2000, the Atlantic 10 Conference earned multiple at-large berths to the NCAA 24was joined by Men’s Basketball Tournament as league champion Temple Xavier and Dayton in the field of 65. The A-10 was the only non-BCS conference to earn multiple at-large bids. Xavier advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in six years and ended the year ranked 15th by ESPN/USA Today and 20th by the Associated Press. Duquesne and Rhode Island earned NIT bids, while Richmond reached the semifinals of the College Basketball Invitational. Off the court, Commissioner McGlade announced that Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J., would serve as the site of the Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Championship in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and that the finals will be televised on CBS Sports for the first time in league history. In women’s basketball, Charlotte captured its first-ever A-10 Championship and was joined in the NCAA Tournament by Temple and Xavier. It marked the fourth time in five seasons that three teams from the Conference received NCAA berths. Dayton, Duquesne, George Washington, Richmond and St. Bonaventure garnered WNIT bids as an unprecedented eight A-10 teams represent the league in postseason play. Saint Louis became the first A-10 volleyball program to go undefeated (13-0) in league play since 1997 and seized its second league championship. The Billikens were joined by Dayton in the 2008 NCAA Volleyball Championship, giving the Conference multiple NCAA teams for the third time in history. In men’s soccer, Dayton captured its first A-10 Championship since 1998, while Massachusetts and Saint Louis earned at-large berths to the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship. It marked the first time since

In cross country, Richmond won its second-ever women’s crown while Massachusetts’ men’s team claimed its first A-10 title since 1995. The UMass field hockey team seized both the regular season title and the A-10 Championship crown for the second consecutive year. Charlotte won its fourth-straight league title in men’s

Judy Rose Director of Athletics

Charlotte 49ers Director of Athletics Judy Rose is one of the most successful and well-respected Athletics Directors in the nation. At the time of her appointment in 1990, she was just the third female to be put in charge of a Division I program. In 1999-2000, she became the first female to serve on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee. She served a five-year term (2000-2004) on that committee. She also completed a term as 2003-04 President of the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA). With the 49ers, she has overseen the 49ers moves from the Sun Belt Conference to the Metro Conference to Conference USA and onto the Atlantic 10 in 2005-06. She has overseen the 49ers growth into a program that for the first time is fullyfunded at the NCAA level for athletic scholarships. She has helped raise monies for new athletic facilities, including the James H. Barnhardt Student Activity Center (Dale F. Halton Arena), the Miltimore-Wallis Athletics and Academic Training Center, the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center (Transamerica Field), the Wachovia Fieldhouse, the Short Game Golf Practice Facility at Rocky River Golf of Concord, N.C. and the Robert and Mariam Hayes Baseball Stadium. The 49ers will begin construction on their on-campus tennis facility in the spring of 2010. In all, she has helped develop nearly $50 million worth of athletic facilities which have enhanced playing venues, academic services, strength and conditioning programs, training and medical support. In all, these upgrades have improved the experience of each and every student-athlete, as a student and as an athlete. She has been instrumental in attracting national sporting events to Charlotte, including the 1994 Men’s Final Four, the 1996 Women’s Final Four, the 1997 AAU Junior Olympics and the 1999 and 2000 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer College Cup. In 2008, the 49ers hosted the NCAA Div. I Men’s Basketball East Regional at Bobcats Arena. It is under her watch that the 49ers have expanded opportunities to include women’s soccer and men’s and women’s track. Her next step has been to lead the 49ers most aggressive push to add football to the Charlotte 49ers program. Winning approval from both the Chancellor and UNC Charlotte Board of Trustees, the 49ers have pushed forward with plans to start the program in 2013. In addition, it has been under Rose’s leadership that the 49ers athletics program has enjoyed its best success. The men’s basketball program has copped nine NCAA bids under her reign and men’s soccer has enjoyed five bids, including a trip to the 1996 National Semifinals. Baseball, women’s basketball, women’s soccer and golf have all posted multiple NCAA Tournament bids while the men’s tennis team earned its first-ever bid. The 49ers have also landed their first-ever individual NCAA qualifiers in men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field and cross-country. Recent highlights include four straight A-10 titles for the women’s indoor track, women’s outdoor track and golf programs as well as a program-best third-place finish 25 at the 2007 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. With that top four finish, Charlotte has boasted a “Final Four” team in both decades that Rose has served as A.D. (‘90’s - M. Soccer, 1996; ‘00’s - Golf, 2007). Since Rose became A.D., 14 of the school’s 16 athletic programs have either won a league title or been represented in NCAA play, or both. Along the way, Rose has reaped her share of awards, most notably the 2001 NACDA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year Award. Other awards have included the Pegasus Award in 1999, the 1996 Bob Quincy Award by the Charlotte Sportsman Club, and the 1996 Charlotte Regional Sports Commission “Sixth-Man” Award for city-wide athletic achievement. She was selected the 1996 Woman of the Year in Charlotte and was named the 1997 Citizen of the Year by the University Chamber of Commerce. In 1986, she became the first female inducted into the Blacksburg (S.C.) Hall of Fame and she received her 25-Year Service Award from UNC Charlotte in 2000. More recently, she was inducted into Winthrop’s Athletics Hall of Fame, was named one of the city’s Top Businesswomen by The Business Journal and was recognized with the Judy Wilkins Rose endowment as part of the University YMCA’s Y Pathways program.
