The brow lift operation is designed to address the aging process in the forehead which can occur from a congenitally low eyebrow position to just simple aging process. Most brow lifts are done in the 4th and 5th decade of life for brow ptosis. Patients become aware and self conscious of low eyebrows, forehead wrinkles, and a high or low hairline and would like to correct these issues. The forehead lift or brow lift is quite popular at the Seattle Facial Plastic Surgery Center. This surgery is simply to rejuvenate the forehead only. This surgery is performed by softening the forehead muscles that raise the eyebrows, and will adjust the hairline if necessary. Excess skin on the forehead can also be removed and the hairline can be shifted either upwards or downwards. The surgical goal of a forehead lift is to do any of the following:

Raise the eyebrows. Lower the hairline. Raise the hairline. Soften the vertical lines between the eyebrows. Soften the horizontal lines in the midportion of the forehead. Address the horizontal line which sometimes occurs at the junction between the nose and the forehead. The forehead is composed of skin and fascia and 3 different muscle groups. The muscle groups include the corrugator, frontalis and procerus muscles. The brow lift procedure can be performed either endoscopically (telescopically) or through a coronal approach. The incisions for the coronal approach are placed either behind the hairline in patients who have a low hairline or at the hairline if the patient desires to lower their current high hairline. Low brows are suspended to a new position and sewn in place by dissolvable sutures tied to the fascia. This pulls the brows in a new position. Weakening of the eyebrow depressor, the corrugator muscle, will prevent normal expression and animation from pulling the brows back down to their normal anatomical position. A drain is placed underneath the skin and the incision is closed very meticulously so that even a patient’s hairdresser would have a hard time finding the incision. Patients may have a surprised look for the first few weeks after the surgery until the brows settle down to their new position. Brows must be over corrected 3-4 mm during surgery since they will lower in the healing process. More skin is typically removed from the lateral position of the brow than from the medial position due to the softening of the muscle. The brow lift operation is a successful operation for the man or woman who has brow ptosis or low eyebrows. When brow ptosis is quite severe, vision can be affected.
