FEARSOME

Past Cup Champions Lurking in the Field

Four former Family Circle Cup champions are in the 2011 draw, all capable of winning again, all hoping to give Justine Henin company. So far, she is the only two-time winner since the tournament moved to Charleston for 2001. The past champions in the current draw, and their paths to glory: – Gene Sapakoff

Nadia Petrova

Jelena Jankovic

Sabine Lisicki

Samantha Stosur

In 2006, Petrova had a shaky set against Alona Bondarenko in her first match but rolled to the final, where Patty Schnyder was a slight crowd favorite — until Petrova pulled away with raw power in three sets of entertainment. It was Petrova’s first Tier I title. Round of 64: Bye Round of 32: Def. Alona Bondarenko, 6-1, 0-6, 6-2 Round of 16: Def. Lucie Safarova, 6-1, 6-3 Quarterfinal: Def. Catalina Castano, 6-2, 6-0 Semifinals: Def. Anna-Lena Groenefeld, 6-1, 6-3 Final: Def. Patty Schnyder, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1

In 2007, the Family Circle Cup was Jankovic’s biggest tour title to date, and was part of her breakout season on the WTA Tour. The highlight of her Family Circle Cup victory was a third-set tiebreaker victory over Venus Williams in the semifinals. Round of 64: Bye Round of 32: Def. Anastasia Rodionova, 6-1, 6-1 Round of 16: Def. Mara Santangelo, 6-3, 6-0 Quarterfinals: Def. Katarina Srebotnik, 6-2, 6-0 Semifinals: Def. Venus Williams, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) Final: Def. Dinara Safina, 6-2, 6-2

In 2009, at No. 63, Lisicki is the lowest-ranked player to win a Family Circle Cup title. She did it in jawdropping style, slamming serves at near-record speeds past overwhelmed opponents. Round of 64: Def. Marie-Eve Pelletier, 7-5, 6-4 Round of 32: Def. Lenka Wienerova, 6-4, 6-3 Round of 16: Def. Venus Williams, 6-4, 7-6 (5) Quarterfinals: Def. Elena Vesnina, 6-4, 6-0 Semifinals: Def. Marion Bartoli, 6-3, 6-1 Final: Def. Caroline Wozniacki, 6-2, 6-4

In 2010, Stosur — better known as a doubles star until her breakthrough singles year of 2009 — struggled at times in her first few matches before bolting to the Family Circle Cup final as a No. 4 seed and winning the $107,000 first prize. Round of 64: Bye Round of 32: Def. Magdalena Rybarikova, 6-3, 7-5 Round of 16: Def. Vera Dushevina, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 Quarterfinals: Def. Shuai Peng, 6-4, 6-1 Semifinals: Def. Daniela Hantuchova, 6-3, 7-6 Final: Def. Vera Zvonareva, 6-0, 6-3

WIDE OPEN WTA Star power void makes parity the rule on 2011 tour

etra Kvitova is not quite a household name, even among tennis enthusiasts. But the 21-year-old from the Czech Republic is relatively dominant on the WTA Tour these days. She was the only player to win two tournament titles in 2011 until top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki caught up with her by capturing the crown at Indian Wells last month. Kvitova has a wonderful, versatile game and is apt to accomplish many more good things. But such highprofile distinction for a player currently enjoying a career-high No. 18 ranking is indicative of the sudden parity on the WTA Tour. Unpredictability might be the women’s tennis norm, not the exception. This year and beyond. Serena Williams has not played all year and suffered a frightening pulmonary embolism in February. Venus Williams withdrew from the Australian Open in the third round with a foot injury and withdrew from last month’s tournament in Miami with nagging abdominal issues. Elena Dementieva, a Family Circle Cup favorite once ranked as high as No. 3, retired in October. Any of more than a dozen players can win any given tournament, including this Family Circle Cup. A star shakeout is part of the sport, says WTA chief executive officer Stacey Allaster.

FILE/AP

Petra Kvitova (top) and Caroline Wozniacki (left) are the only two players on the WTA to win multiple tournament titles this season. “Every time there is a changing of a generation of stars, one begins to ask these questions. ‘Who will replace Martina, Monica, Steffi?’ ” Allaster told onthebaseline.com. “It’s very natural for all of us to say ‘Who is next?’ Who is the next generation of stars? Who is going to take the WTA to the next level?” But finding and establishing stars — not just a revolving collection of good players — is critical to popular success in any sport or entertainment model. “You not only want star power, but you want them to stick around so fans get to know them,” Larry Scott, Allaster’s WTA predecessor and now the commissioner of the Pacific-10 Conference, told USA Today.

“Justine (Henin), Kim (Clijsters) and Venus and Serena are great because they’ve been around a while.” Family Circle Cup patrons got a sneak preview of the parity trend in 2009 when Germany’s Sabine Lisicki, ranked No. 63 upon arrival in Charleston, leaned on a rocket serve to win her first singles title. She defeated Wozniacki in the final, but has not won a title since. WTA Tour stop winners this year include Greta Arn, Jarmila Groth, Magdalena Rybarikova, Gisela Dulko, Lourdes Dominguez Lino, Daniela Hantuchova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. None are ranked in the top 20. Yes, No. 2 Kim Clijsters and No. 3 Vera Zvonareva also have won

titles this year. But compare that to the 2010 tournaments leading up to the Family Circle Cup. Winners included Venus Williams (twice), Clijsters (twice), Dementieva (twice), Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Jelena Jankovic and Zvonareva. What a difference a year makes. Almost incredibly, Clijsters, going into the Miami tour stop in late March, was the only 2011 winner with a Grand Slam title on her resume. Of course, the tour at some point was going to have to find new stars to replace the Williams sisters. Why not start now? Wozniacki fits the part. “I just love playing matches,” the Family Circle Cup No. 1 seed said after winning at Indian Wells. “I like winning. I like holding the trophy in my hands. It gives me that energy. It’s great. You know, I don’t feel tired, to be honest. I feel great. I feel in good shape.” Jankovic has been No. 1 and defending Family Circle Cup champion Samantha Stosur has the potential. The scramble among younger players is fun to watch, but it only makes establishing the next star more difficult. “It would be huge to be able to win here,” Stosur said in Miami last month. “It would be the biggest tournament I’ve won to date, but it’s tough. You have to do things well both on and off the court and have certain things go your way.” Such is the nature of a wide-open WTA.

ver the top from Down Under. Samantha Stosur, of all people. Two years ago, the 27-year-old Australian was best known on Daniel Island and the rest of the tennis world for her great doubles work. Stosur and American Lisa Raymond teamed to win the U.S. Open in 2005.Then at Roland Garros in 2006, a few months after winning the Family Circle Cup doubles title. Now her poster hangs on the side of Family Circle Stadium, the customary tribute given the defending singles champion. The meteoric rise was all right there in one brief Sunday appearance. “You know, you have a handful of matches where everything you hit is a good shot or winner and you just kind of can’t miss,” Stosur said last April after cruising to a 6-0, 6-3 rout of Vera Zvonareva in the Family Circle Cup final. “I guess they’re the days that everyone talks about you’re in the zone or whatever; you just do it. And it’s just a great feeling, and you wish that you could do that every day. But it’s not that easy, so to be able to do it in a final is all that more pleasing.” Veteran tennis enthusiasts can spot the physical changes. Stosur is strong enough as a top singles contender to slug it out with the best. She still has only two She’s very singles titles — Osaka in 2009 and the Family powerful. She Circle Cup last year — but is consistent. Stosur jumped from No. 52 in the 2008 final rankings almost plays like to No. 13 in 2009 to No. 6 in 2010. a man, in a very “Obviously, she improved so much in the last few years,” Daniela Hantuchova said after losgood way, plays ing to Stosur in a Family Circle Cup semifinals with a lot of spin, match last year. “She’s very powerful. She almost plays like a man, and the serve is in a very good way, plays with a huge. lot of spin, and the serve is huge. “I mean she was serving slice Daniela Hantuchova serves 118, which I think you don’t see on the men’s tour too often, so she’s got a great game. She’s a very strong girl, and yeah, she works hard for it, so she definitely deserves to be there.” Rallying has been a way of tennis life for Stosur. She did not grow up with tennis-playing parents and started playing as an 8-year-old when her older brother gave her a racket for Christmas. “So I went down to the park with my brother and played and loved that,” Stosur said before reaching the final at Roland Garros last June. “He played a little bit at school just for fun, but never got lessons. I guess I was lucky to have an older brother — he’s eight years older — who didn’t mind hanging out with his little sister.” Stosur’s colorful approach is often fun to watch. The range of emotion was on display last year at the Family Circle Cup. “I don’t get too mad with myself for showing emotion like that as long as I can step up to the line the next point and play a good one and still be kind of in control of the way I’m playing,” Stosur said after defeating Hantuchova, “and maybe I didn’t do that initially. But to be able to come back and really fix it up from 5-2, then that’s pleasing.” PHOTO BY GRACE BEAHM/STAFF

Vandeweghe lost to Flavia Pennetta, 6-1, 6-2, in the fourth singles match but replaced Oudin in the first match a day earlier when captain Mary Joe Fernandez thought Vandeweghe matched up better with Schiavone. Schiavone handed Vandeweghe a 6-2, 6-4 loss. Fernandez replaced Mattek-Sands, the top U.S. player, with Oudin after Mattek-Sands cramped up in her singles match against Penetta. Six WTA tour players — including Family Circle Cup participants Sabine Lisicki, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Alize Cornet — will take part in Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Hot Shots reality show via a live Facebook page. The announcement was made last month in Miami, where co-developer Maria Sharapova took center stage. “It basically showcases what some of our players are like off the court, giving fans insight into their lives and personalities,” Sharapova said. “It’s a wonderful experience for the players, getting to be behind the camera, which some of them haven’t done a lot of yet.” The show will run for the next five months. Participating players also include Dominika Cibulkova, Sorana Cirstea and Heather Watson. They will compete for fan votes online, with the winner receiving a “Sony Ericsson support package.”
