A Message From Marko...

Butte-Silver Bow Chamber of Commerce Visitors’ Center 1000 George St. Butte, MT 59701 (406) 723-3177

WOW! This is my 10th year as director of the Butte Chamber of Commerce and it has been a great one! Most importantly, on Thursday, October 24, 2013, we held our 102nd Annual Dinner/Meeting at the Butte Civic Center. This year’s dinner was exceptional in many ways. In order for the evening to run smoothly and be exceptional, you have to have a focused MC, and we certainly had that with the talents of Mike Johnson. Being able to honor our veterans and military was a special gift. As the United Veteran’s Council Honor Guard presented the colors with the Butte High Chorus singing the National Anthem and the songs for each branch of the military, capturing the attention of all in attendance with many people having tears in their eyes. In so many instances we take for granted these wonderful people who sacrifice so much. Just to think that the Military Entrance Program is stationed right in our community and from May 2010 through June 2013, the MEPS processed 10,029 individuals and shipped 3,490 soldiers. The Chamber Dinner’s Theme for this year was Discover One of Butte’s Hidden Treasures. The chamber wanted to recognize this treasure which is the youth of our community. The 70 member Butte High/ East Middle School Choral group under the able direction of Ted Farabee sang the National Anthem and Military songs with passion and enthusiasm. Chris Fisk’s

Montana History Club escorted the guests to their tables and helped with the cleanup of the tables and dishes. The evening’s entertainment was the 65 member award winning Dynamic Dance and Tumbling Academy under the direction of Krista Harrington and Kymee Wagner. In January 2013, this group qualified 1st in each age division, were the recipients of the Sportsmanship Award, The High Point Award and were the overall Regional Studio Showdown Winners in the Nevada/ Utah/Montana/Wyoming/Arizona Region! Their performance for the annual dinner/meeting was astounding and captured the audience for the entire performance that ended with a hearty and lengthy standing ovation. The comments from many people leaving the Civic Center were “We can’t believe this group is right here in our community.” Yes, we discovered Butte’s Own Hidden Treasures – our Youth. I would like to thank every individual that made this dinner and year so successful beyond our expectations.

Sincerely,

The Harold McGrath Award was presented by Sheriff Ed Lester and President Paula Ruark. The Harold McGrath Award, established by the Butte-Silver Bow Chamber of Commerce in 1986, is presented to an individual business, non-profit organization, civic or government entity that has enhanced or contributed significantly to the “quality of life” of the Butte-Silver Bow community. The recipient of this award was the 15-90 Search and Rescue who is celebrating their 50th year of existence. The Mike Venner “Spirit of Butte” Award was presented by the Venner family and Paul Babb. The Mike Venner Spirit of Butte Award is presented to an individual who exemplifies the resiliency, love of life, family, and community that Mike had. Recipients also possess the ability to unite people regardless of the circumstances. This year’s recipient is Josh Peck.

An event of this magnitude could not be successful without the help and support of many individuals. First and foremost, the 22 major sponsors whose investment made this dinner possible. We would like to extend a big thank you to Ginny Powers, GG’s Wedding and Party Planning and Decorations, whose decorations were magnificent. We would like to thank the chamber ambassadors who are always there and helped with decorating and clean up. Also, a big thank you to the Civic Center staff for being so professional and providing such a wonderful venue for this event. And last but not least, thanks to Gary and Jennifer Shea, from Shea Realtors, for donating the 600 program booklets for the dinner and also the numbered table tents for each table. Collectively, the 102nd dinner/meeting was a resounding success, thanks for all of your hard work!

Keep Old Glory Flying The Butte Chamber of Commerce was the recipient of a gift from Brooks Hanna of an 80 foot flag pole and three flags that measure 22 x 38 feet. This flag is visible from the entire community as well as all people traveling the I-15/I-90 corridor. Due to the size of the flag and weather conditions, the flags are only lasting 30 days before having to be repaired. Individually the flags cost $1,295 each or three flags for $2,000. The Chamber of Commerce has replaced six flags and the United Veterans Council has purchased six flags. The expense is too much to financially for any one entity. However, we want to continue the great tradition of flying a flag at the Butte Chamber of Commerce to honor all veterans, soldiers and our great country. It is with this thought in mind that we are asking for your financial support to help us maintain this worthwhile endeavor. Any donation, no matter how small or large, would be very much appreciated. At the annual dinner, President Elect, Pete Akey made an appeal for donations to a special fund TO KEEP OLD GLORY FLYING. If you are so inclined, you may make a financial contribution to this fund by remitting and making a check payable to: Butte Chamber of Commerce Keep Old Glory Flying 1000 George St. Butte, MT 59701 Thanking you in advance for your consideration and donation!

THE VETERN A Veteran is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made out payable to THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’ for an AMOUNT of UP TO AND INCLUDING THEIR LIFE. That is the honor, a privilege to serve and protect this Nation, which makes this the greatest country in the world.
