Southern Colour
In the Summers of 2018 and 2019 I taught at Le Manoir du Battut in the Corrèze in France. The hay had just been cut and the sun shone brightly on a fresh and pristine landscape. What took me by total surprise was the intensity of light and the richness of colour. This experience was something very different to India, Sri Lanka and an English summer. My paintings began to fragment into thick slabs of colour and light.

The colours and light seemed to be making me bolder and more free. In August 2109 I had a short visit to St Tropez and was again taken aback by the intensity of light. Looking and taking the whole experience in was overwhelming visually and when I returned to a rather wet studio in Wiltshire there was an explosion of colour. Working from some sketches, photographs and memory the paint started to flow.

Between my two trips to France I painted in Devon and Wiltshire bringing some of that dazzling light into the English landscape. Even mid Winter produced some sparkling results helped by the experiences I had had with Southern Colour.
