CHARLES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH

The Charles County Department of Health strives to move the community closer toward the organization’s vision of a healthier Charles County. The Charles County Department of Health provides many services to ensure the mission to promote safety, protect public health, and improve health and wellness of the community. Due to the efforts of the Department, our beaches are clean, our restaurants are safe to eat in, and infectious diseases are investigated and monitored to stop the spread.

Vital Records

Maryland Birth and Death Certificates may be purchased and obtained from the Charles County Department of Health out of the Annex Building. The Vital Records Department is open from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday, by appointment. Call to schedule an appointment or get more information.

Non-Emergency Medical Transportation

The medical assistance transportation program coordinates transportation services for Medical Assistance recipients who reside in Charles County and need transportation to access medically necessary services. The program provides “last resort” transportation for Medical Assistance recipients who have no other means available to get to and from medical appointments.

Behavioral Health Services

The Behavioral Health Division provides mental health and substance use services in an outpatient setting for the residents of Charles County and the surrounding areas. The Division offers individual, group and family psychotherapy, anger management and medication assisted therapy. In addition to traditional therapy support, the Behavioral Health Services Division provides individual and family peer recovery support, Narcan training and distribution, tobacco cessation classes and prevention outreach and education.

Local Behavioral Health Authority

The Local Behavioral Health Authority (LBHA) plans, manages, and monitors a full range of treatment and rehabilitation services for persons with mental illness and co-occurring disorders through the Public Behavioral Health System. One of the LBHA’s many roles is to sponsor and provide training programs for provider agencies, including Mental Health First Aid and Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training.

Disability Services

The Division of Disability Services provides Coordination of Community Services (CCS) to individuals with disabilities and an Infants and Toddlers program for eligible children in Charles County in partnership with the Charles County Public School and Charles County Department of Social Services. The CCS program provides case management services and assists individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities and their families in learning and gaining access to resources in their community, planning for their future, and accessing needed services and supports. The Infants and Toddlers Program provides services at no cost to children from birth through 2 years of age who may be delayed in their development or have diagnosed disabilities. Using a family-centered approach, the program monitors and assists families by coaching them on how to promote development in all areas for their child. Services that can be offered to an eligible child and their family depends on their areas of need and may include service coordination, audiology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, special instruction, and home visits.

Environmental Health Services

The Division of Environmental Health Services performs functions to ensure the protection of public health. Environmental Health staff conduct review and oversight of on-site septic systems and wells, and inspection of food service facilities, public swimming pools, pet stores and campgrounds. The division also conducts private drinking water sampling, public bathing beach sampling, investigates animal bites, and oversees quarantines for animal bite incidents

Nursing and Community Health Division and Disease Prevention and Health Promotions

These two divisions of the Health Department provide many and varied clinical services, case management, care coordination, disease screening, diagnostic and treatment services, health education and surveillance services to meet the health care needs of individuals in the community. The services are made available to uninsured, underinsured, and Medical recipients and no one is denied service due to inability to pay. These preventive and proactive services meet these needs at various stages of life, focusing on health improvement, promoting well-being and preventing illness through early diagnosis. Programs under the supervision of the Nursing and Community Health Services Division include: • Adult Evaluation and Review Services (AERS) and

Nurse Monitoring • Maryland Children’s Health Insurance Program (MCHP) • Breast, Cervical and Colorectal Cancer Programs • School Health Program • Women, Infant and Children (WIC)

• Administrative Care Coordinator Program (ACC) • Dental Health and Dental Clinic Services Programs under the supervision of the Disease Prevention and Health Promotions Division include: • Chronic Disease and Health Promotion, including the

Diabetes Prevention Program • Asthma and Lead Poisoning Prevention Program • Maternal/Child Health Program • Adult and Child Immunizations • Reproductive Health Clinic Services • Infectious Disease Management (including surveillance) • HIV Case Management and Financial Assistance for persons living with HIV • HIV Prevention and Testing • Emergency Preparedness (including COVID-19 and

Influenza vaccination services and COVID-19 testing) • Epidemiology (data and evaluation)
