Innovative Designer Natriuretic Peptides for Cardiorenal Disease John C. Burnett, Jr., MD

A Brief History of the Carl J. Wiggers Memorial Lecture The Carl J. Wiggers Memorial Lecture was established in 1963, the year of Dr. Wiggers’ death. He retired in 1953 as Chairman of the Department of Physiology at Western Reserve University. He was President of the American Physiological Society and wrote almost 400 scientific papers and eight textbooks. He founded the journal Circulation Research in 1952. His legacy, however, is that he trained many of the world’s cardiovascular leaders. Carl Wiggers personally trained 38 department heads and/or research directors.

About the 2011 Carl J. Wiggers Memorial Guest Lecturer John C. Burnett, Jr., MD Dr. Burnett is Professor of Medicine and Physiology; Marriott Family Professor of Cardiovascular Research at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Burnett’s research program has focused on the biology, therapeutics and diagnostics of the natriuretic peptide system and the role of the heart as an endocrine organ. His work addresses cardiorenal integration in heart failure and hypertension where the natriuretic peptides via the particulate guanylyl cyclase/cGMP complex serve to maintain cardiovascular homeostasis. His published studies (over 450 peer-reviewed publications) include highly translational work related to drug discovery and cardiac biomarkers based upon the natriuretic peptide system. This research program has been continuously funded by NIH for the last twenty-four years. Currently, Dr. Burnett serves as the Principal Investigator on a Program Project Grant entitled “Biology and Therapeutics of Cardiovascular Peptides.” In addition to being extensively involved in research programs at the Mayo Clinic, including serving as Director for Research at the Mayo Clinic from 1999 to 2004, he has served as the Director of the Cardiorenal Research Laboratory since 1987.

gene ral informat io n Statement of Need Cardiovascular disease is the leading health care problem throughout the world. In the United States alone, an estimated 70 million people have been diagnosed with one or more forms of cardiovascular disease (CV), and over 910,000 Americans die from CV disease each year. The cardiac care team is increasingly asked to develop systems of care, the methods for which are not necessarily part of the traditional medical training. We are asked to do this better, faster, more efficiently and at a lower cost. Overall Goal Physicians and cardiac care associates are required to maintain up-to-date knowledge of the latest clinical developments in the practice of cardiology to improve patient outcomes. The overall goal of this activity is to increase learner competence by discovering strategies to anticipate research-driven changes in practice, to enhance professional growth, and to demonstrate efficacy in team based patient care practice as new clinical approaches and technologies change. The Ohio Chapter-ACC Spring Summit will include education that provides needs-based learning covering a thorough overview of anticoagulation strategies in atrial fibrillation, women and arrhythmias, diabetes, percutaneous valve interventions, and natriuretic peptides for cardiorenal disease. Learner Objectives Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to: • Identify at least two barriers faced in clinical practice that impede adherence to AF treatment guidelines for the prevention of stroke and discuss ways to overcome these barriers • Discuss the influence of gender on cardiac arrhythmias and how these differences impact treatment. • Identify patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who are appropriate candidates to receive aspirin, ACE-I/ARB therapy, and statins for both primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular events. • Explore the indications and limitations of precutaneous valve replacement procedures. • Analyze the utilization of natriuretic peptide therapy for use in select heart failure patients. Target Audience Adult Cardiologists, Pediatric Cardiologists, Cardiothoracic Surgeons, Cardiology Fellows-inTraining, Internal Medicine Physicians, Private Practice Physicians, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Physician Assistants, Pharmacists

The American College of Cardiology Foundation is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The ACCF designates this live activity for a maximum of 5.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credits commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Nurses American College of Cardiology Foundation is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. The ACCF designates this educational activity for a maximum of 5.5 continuing education hours. An activity is successfully completed when the attendee participates in a presentation in its entirety and completes the evaluation tool. Contact hours will be awarded in amounts equal to the time associated with the presentation successfully completed. While offering CME and CE credits noted above, this program is not intended to provide extensive training or certification in the field. Acknowledgment At the time of printing, a complete listing of industry supporters was not available.
