What Interventional Cardiology Has Taught Us about Physiology and Pathophysiology David R. Holmes, Jr., MD, FACC A Brief History of the Carl J. Wiggers Memorial Lecture The Carl J. Wiggers Memorial Lecture was established in 1963, the year of Dr. Wiggers’ death. He retired in 1953 as Chairman of the Department of Physiology at Western Reserve University. He was President of the American Physiological Society and wrote almost 400 scientific papers and eight textbooks. He founded the journal Circulation Research in 1952. His legacy, however, is that he trained many of the world’s cardiovascular leaders. Carl Wiggers personally trained 38 department heads and/or research directors.

About the 2010 Carl J. Wiggers Memorial Guest Lecturer David R. Holmes, Jr., MD, FACC Dr. Holmes is currently a Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and a consultant in the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases and the Department of Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Holmes has also been named the Edward W. and Betty Knight Scripps Professor in Cardiovascular Medicine in Honor of Dr. George M. Gura, Jr. In 2010, he was elected Vice President of the American College of Cardiology. His special areas of interest include Acute Coronary Syndromes, Interventional Cardiology, Restenosis, Vascular Biology, Risk Outcomes Analysis, and Telemedicine. In addition, he is involved in the development of new catheter design and new approaches for treatment of a wide variety of patients with coronary artery disease and vein graft disease. Finally, he is involved in the development of continued application of percutaneous coronary intervention technology to noncoronary vascular beds. Dr. Holmes received his medical degree at Marquette University Medical School in Milwaukee and completed his internship at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle. He also served in the United States Navy at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda.

MEETING DESCRIPTIO N STATEMENT OF NEED Cardiovascular disease is the leading health care problem throughout the world. In the United States alone, an estimated 70 million people have been diagnosed with one or more forms of cardiovascular disease (CV), and over 910,000 Americans die from CV disease each year. The cardiac care team is increasingly asked to develop systems of care, the methods for which are not necessarily part of the traditional medical training. We are asked to do this better, faster, more efficiently and at a lower cost. OVERALL GOAL Physicians and cardiac care associates are required to maintain up-to-date knowledge of the latest clinical developments in the practice of cardiology to improve patient outcomes. The overall goal of this activity is to increase learner competence by discovering strategies to anticipate research-driven changes in practice, to enhance professional growth, and to demonstrate efficacy in team based patient care practice as new clinical approaches and technologies change. Physicians and cardiac care associates are required to maintain up-todate knowledge of the latest clinical developments in the practice of cardiology to improve patient outcomes. The Ohio Chapter-ACC Spring Summit will include education that provides needs-based learning covering a thorough overview of atrial fibrillation, polypharmacy, imaging, cardio-renal failure, and interventional cardiology. LEARNER OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to: ■ Discuss the clinical implications of polypharmacy in the elderly patient with cardiovascular disease. ■ Analyze the pathophysiology and clinical consequences of the cardiorenal syndrome. ■ Discuss the clinical utility of diagnostic imaging in heart disease. ■ Compare and contrast the treatment strategies for atrial fibrillation. ■ Examine endothelial function and dysfunction, the role of platelet aggregation and thrombus formation in acute coronary syndromes, and the importance of randomized clinical trials in decision making. TARGET AUDIENCE Adult Cardiologists, Pediatric Cardiologists, Cardiothoracic Surgeons, Cardiology Fellows-inTraining, Internal Medicine Physicians, Private Practice Physicians, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Physician Assistants, Pharmacists

MEETING DESCRIPTIO N ACCF DISCLOSURE & COI POLICY STATEMENT ACCF/Chapter committee members, faculty, staff and other individuals who are in a position to control the content of this activity are required to disclose all real or apparent conflicts of interest. Full disclosure will be published in the syllabus. ACCREDITATION Physicians This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the American College of Cardiology Foundation and the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Cardiology. The American College of Cardiology Foundation is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The ACCF designates this educational activity for a maximum of 4.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credits commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Nurses American College of Cardiology Foundation is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. The ACCF designates this educational activity for a maximum of 4.25 continuing education hours. An activity is successfully completed when the attendee participates in a presentation in its entirety and completes the evaluation tool. Contact hours will be awarded in amounts equal to the time associated with the presentation successfully completed. While offering CME and CE credits noted above, this program is not intended to provide extensive training or certification in the field. Acknowledgment At the time of printing, a complete listing of industry supporters was not available.
