Brief History of New Castle When Henry Hudson arrived in 1609, present day Westchester County was occupied by the Wappinger Confederacy, part of the Mahicanni (Mahican) nation. Two groups of the Wappinger Confederacy, the Tankiteke and Sint Sinks, inhabited the eastern and western parts of New Castle, respectively. Over time, however, their numbers dwindled and they were completely gone from the area by 1791. On April 5, 1791, New Castle held its first town meeting. The Town then severed its ties with the Town of North Castle. Prior to April 5, 1791, the area had been settled by the Quakers and the Anglicans. The Quakers built the Meeting House in 1753, the oldest standing building in New Castle. During the Revolution, the Meeting House provided shelter for some of General Washington’s wounded troops. From colonial times through the mid-19th century, the residents of New Castle were largely self-sufficient farmers, part-time millers, and craftsmen. The arrival of the railroad in Chappaqua (1848) and Millwood (1869) forever transformed New Castle. The farmers began to grow and ship cash crops, residents built a pickle factory and cider mills, and the hamlets of Chappaqua and Millwood developed freight stations, livery stables, general stores and hotels. Over time the center of Chappaqua shifted from the area around the Meeting House to its present day location. Gradually, these local industries lost their vitality, but the beauty of the land and convenient transportation provided by the railroad began to attract people who had accumulated wealth in New York City. Among these was Horace Greeley, the editor and founder of the New York Tribune and an unsuccessful presidential candidate in the election of 1872. Greeley first bought land in Chappaqua in 1853 and later owned what is now known as the Horace Greeley House. He also owned a large part of central Chappaqua including the grounds of Robert E. Bell Middle School. The population Town of New Castle remained small through the end of the 19th century but began to grow rapidly after the World Wars. The Saw Mill River Parkway reached the Town in 1934 and in the late 30s and 40s real estate developments took root. From 1950 to 1960 the population of New Castle grew dramatically by 60% to more than 14,000. The major force driving this population increase was the acknowledged excellence of the Chappaqua School District. New Castle has been fortunate to retain much of its early charm – partly because of its vigorous terrain, and partly through the care given by owners, residents, and the Town government to its historic buildings and areas. By Fred Yaeger There are two schools of thought in teaching music: Memorize scales and chords and concentrate on sight reading reams of sheet music; or, allow self-expression to flourish and gracefully accentuate the positive, allowing students to gravitate naturally to their instrument of choice, and to music in its entirety.

Music Educator, Performer and Entrepreneur Janet Angier Expands Students’ Horizons at Innovative Music in Chappaqua

This latter methodology is embraced by Janet Angier, a gifted musician who has nourished the talents of hundreds of students at the highly regarded Music in Chappaqua, the music academy she founded two decades ago this year and presides over today. Music in Chappaqua is a harmonious blend of creative musical oasis and serious learning environment, attracting students from all walks of life, ages and interests. Many graduates have gone on to pursue successful careers in music and the performing arts. Yet it is Ms. Angier’s entrepreneurial spirit and pedagogical prowess that draws learners to Music in Chappaqua. “Through music the individual can have a voice,” Ms. Angier explains. “Regardless of genre or the path you take to get there, lessons should support a student’s own self-expression. Music is a true gift.”

Bedford Playhouse Route 22/633 Old Post Road Bedford, NY 10506 914-234-7300

Music in Chappaqua offers instruction in piano, voice, violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, trumpet, guitar, bass guitar, drum, clarinet, saxophone and songwriting. About 20 faculty members are associated with the school; students range from three years old to working parents and retirees.

The school has grown as a business and sanctuary for learning. Ms. Angier discovered that as an entrepreneur she needed help to succeed. “I have a very good support system,” she explains. “I enjoy the creative side of programming, giving myself the creative freedom to develop new programs.” She has become more “innovative and ambitious… to bring new lessons and ideas that inspire people.” Part of this inspiration comes in Ms. Angier’s approach to nurturing students. She embraces teaching through a freer, more passive route to musical enlightenment. She champions the idea of students relying on self-expression early, rather than waiting years for their teacher to say, “Add expression.” “In teaching, it’s important to notice the good things: What you see and what you focus on is what develops,” she says. “If you notice what the student is doing right, they’ll notice that as well, and it will grow. I encourage everyone to see the good — not to focus on things that are not.” With all of her endeavors, it is Music in Chappaqua that is closest to Ms. Angier’s heart. She plans to broaden course offerings and next year expand the Summer Music Program to appeal to a wider audience. For now, she enjoys her roles as educator, administrator, facilitator, and promulgator of a warmer, more enthusiastic, more spiritual approach to bringing the joys of music to her current roster of students, and to generations to come. Summer Concert Series

Photo by Carolyn Simpson, Doublevision Photography

Photographers

The Summer Concert Series is a New Castle tradition, bringing families together to celebrate the community and listen to great music. The Series takes place July with a different band or musical group performing each Wednesday evening at the Gazebo in Recreation Field. Summer of 2013 featured a Bruce Springsteen cover band, the Chappaqua Orchestra, a Neil Diamond cover bad, and an 80’s cover band. Local food and ice cream vendors serve up great eats, local merchants showcase their businesses, and kids can play in the “Kid’s Corner” featuring children’s crafts, obstacle course activities, and even a bouncy castle.

The Recreation and Parks Department and the Chamber of Commerce are working hard to bring you another fantastic concert season with great music, food, and fun! The 2014 concerts will be held on July 9, 16, 23, and 30, and will start 7pm in Recreation Field (200 South Greeley Avenue, Chappaqua).

Except where otherwise noted, the photographs included in What’s New in New Castle have been generously contributed by the following local photographers: Doublevision Photographers

Movies in Millwood Park 2013 saw the advent of a great new event in Millwood – Movies in Millwood Park! On Friday evenings in June, families came together to watch movies under the stars at Millwood Park. Moviegoers enjoyed popcorn and movie treats while watching fun family films like E.T., Despicable Me, and Here Comes the Boom. This year, movies will be shown on June 6, 13, 20, and 27 in Millwood Park (next to Rocky’s Deli in Millwood). Admission is free and movies begin at dusk (approximately 8:30 pm). Grab a blanket and bring the family to take in some cinema in the park! 24 | Chappaqua-Millwood Chamber of Commerce | What’s New in New Castle 2014

Shopping local doesn’t just benefit the local merchants, it benefits you and our local community as well.

• Locally-owned businesses mean that decisions with respect to businesses are made by people will feel the impact of the decisions and who may also live in the community. This leads to careful decision-making. • Local businesses generously support local non-profits and charities, schools and community events. • Local businesses can better, and more quickly, respond to the needs of their customers and adjust inventory accordingly. (If you don’t see something you need, ask if they can get it for you.) • Local businesses only survive if they maintain a high level of customer loyalty and repeat business – which translates into better customer service for you. • Social networking helps you connect. When you shop local, you get to see your friends and neighbors!

Fire Departments Chappaqua Fire Headquarters Emergency: 911 Non-Emergency: 914-238-4205 491 King Street Chappaqua, NY 10514

Here’s some food for thought…

• The 3/50 Project® has calculated that for every $100 spent in locally-owned, independent stores, $68 comes back to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. Of $100 spent in a national chain, only $43 returns to the local community. So when you “shop local”, you are contributing to local job creation, helping to fund town infrastructure and services through taxes, investing in improvement in our business districts and promoting community.

Chappaqua Children’s Book Festival Story by Dori Busell Photos by Kevan Full

The 2013 Chappaqua Children’s Book Festival drew close to 4,000 book lovers from Westchester County, Rockland County, New York City and Connecticut to Chappaqua, showcasing New Castle’s unique flavor and its dedication to education and literacy. Approximately 65 children’s and middle-grade authors and illustrators, such as the authors of Pinkalicious, The Zack Files, and Ella Enchanted) participated in the Festival. The authors were on hand throughout the day to meet with fans, sign copies of their books, and read book-excerpts. Many authors sold out of their books just hours into the Festival. The Festival also featured food, treats and a variety of children’s activities organized by over 30 local-area businesses and organizations, which sponsored the Festival. “I can’t say thank you enough times,” added Dawn Greenberg, Executive Director of the Festival and owner of Aurora. “Thank you to our volunteers, our 30 sponsors, the authors who gave us a shot and mostly to the parents and children of Chappaqua and Westchester who love to read. We can’t wait to see what the 2014 Festival will bring next September.” Be sure to check out the 2014 Festival on September 27, 2014!

What’s So Special About Our Town?

By Maggie Mae Pup Reporter™ with Ronni Diamondstein, Photos by Ronni Diamondstein As a dog, I couldn’t be happier living in our town. There is a lot to like about it. I write for Inside Chappaqua magazine so I thought I’d share my thoughts on what makes New Castle such a great place to live. First there are some very special people just doing their jobs. What would any of us do without the New Castle Police Department and especially Officer James Moore, the animal control warden? When I walk in town the police officers help me and my owner cross the busy corner of King Street and Greeley Avenue and they always say hello to me. Officer Moore, who works out of the Town Clerk’s office, has been very helpful to me whenever I have dogrelated questions. And you can easily register your dog at Town Hall. That is very important to do. Members of the volunteer Chappaqua and Millwood Fire Departments made me feel safe in my home by giving my owner a Pet Finder decal for the window by our front door. In case of a fire, they know that even if no human is home, they need to rescue me.

Then there are the many pet friendly businesses in our town. I’ve been offered water and treats from many of them. Some staff comes out to greet me. And others honk their horns and wave at us when they drive by on their way to work. We are so happy to see one another. A place I love to go to is Gedney Park in Millwood. Many of my dog friends go there to run on the trails. It is a beautiful place to walk around and I see lots of kids playing there too. One of my favorite activities is the annual Memorial Day Parade. People and pooches line King Street and South Greeley and gather at the train station to honor our fallen heroes. It is always fun to see everyone and there is such a good feeling of community togetherness for us dogs as well as our owners. When all is said and done, just a simple walk in town makes me the happiest. I never know if I will see someone I already know and wag my tail at them, if I will meet a new friend, be it canine or human, or there will be a Chamber event or the Farmers Market. And that is what I love the most about living in our town. Chappaqua Farmers Market The Chappaqua Farmers Market is a year round farmers market with local farmers and vendors bringing their fare to downtown Chappaqua. From April – November, the Market is at the Chappaqua Train Station. In December, the Market moves indoors to the St. Mary’s Church (191 South Greeley Avenue) in downtown Chappaqua. Indoors and out, the Market features greenhouse greens and organic produce, delicious baked goods (including pretzels, breads, and gluten-free items), organic nuts and nut Photo by butters. There are also terrific meats - organic and local pork, chicken, sausage and lamb – and fresh fish (and shellfish) caught just hours before market. When outdoors, the Market offers additional prepared food vendors (think brick oven pizza!), as well as activities for children and a variety of live music. The Market is a great part of anyone’s weekend routine – a chance to shop for some fresh, local items and to run into your neighbors and friends from around town. The Market is from 8:30am-1pm year round. For more information visit http://chappaquafarmersmarket.org. What’s New in New Castle 2014 | Chappaqua-Millwood Chamber of Commerce | 35
