Highway 129, connecting Chapleau and Thessalon, Ontario, was officially opened on a cold winter day on January 28,1949, after years ofbeingapoliticalfootball.Itmaynothavebeen muchmorethana"turkeytrail"throughthebush, but a highway was a highway, and Chapleau's nowhadahighwayconnectionto thewiderworld

The opening, however, wasmarredbytragedywhenT.J. Godfrey, whose great passion was the buildingof the highway, died of a heart attack while participating in the first drive overthehighway.

But Mr. Godfrey saw his dreambecomeareality.
