Coastal Carolina Department of Athletics 2016-17 Year In Review

CHANTICLEER HEADLINES Men’s Basketball Reaches College Basketball Invitational Final One year after recording the first three postseason wins in program history and reaching the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT), the Chanticleer men’s basketball team once again found itself in postseason contention in 2016-17 after accepting an invitation to the College Basketball Invitational (CBI). The regular season saw the Chants finish with a 16-17 (10-8 Sun Belt) record to earn the eighth seed in the Sun Belt Championship. An 80-67 win over No. 9 South Alabama in the opening round was followed by a loss to top-seeded UTA in the second round, but it did not mark the end of the season for the Chants.

Coastal played each of the first three rounds of the CBI at the HTC Center, and the home-court advantage allowed the Chants to cruise past Hampton (83-67), Loyola Maryland (73-63) and University of Illinois at Chicago (89-78) to set up a best-of-three championship series against Wyoming. The first game of the series was held in Conway, and the home-court advantage continued as Coastal opened with a 91-81 victory. The series then shifted to Laramie, Wyo., where the Cowboys rallied to claim the final two games and take the championship. Coastal finished the season 20-19 overall, and improved its all-time number of postseason wins to seven.
