Volleyball Fun with 8th Grade

During Catholic School’ s Week, one of the traditions is the 8th grade volleyball game against their classmates A few weeks before the game, the whole grade came together to pick teams for the games. Everyone broke off into individual teams of seven. Each group could choose their individual team names. The teams were: The Gwiddys, The Bikini Bottom Besties, Team Bingus, The Fab 7, and Team Roblox Everyone was expected to dress up, have crazy costumes, and have fun The 8th graders were excited and ready to play.

After weeks of practicing, it was time to make those skills useful and play The first game was The Bikini Bottom Besties Vs. The Fab 7. When the teams started playing, the grade started cheering and screaming. The players on the court were playing with everything they had. After 10 minutes, The Fab 7 won their first game

The next game was The Gwiddys Vs. Team Roblox. When they took to the court the crowd went wild. The Gwiddys came out victorious. The game after that was Team Bingus vs. The Gwiddys. The Gwiddys won their second game

Finally, the finale came, and it was The Fab 7 vs The Gwiddys Both teams took the court with so much energy The teams were so excited and ready to win When the game started, the whole grade was cheering. The ball was back and forth the whole game. The game was so close- right down to the wire. The score was 10-12 in the final 5 minutes. Then The Fab 7 tied the game up with 2 minutes to spare The score was 12-12 The ball was back and forth once again Until there was one minute left in the game, and The Gwiddys scored 2 points and won the championship game. The crowd went wild. The 8th graders had a lot of fun participating in the volleyball tournament.

With the volleyball tournament done, the 8th graders had a good end to their student day during Catholic Schools Week The 8th graders had a great time playing their fellow classmates They had a lot of fun playing, and cheering for their classmates. And with that, Catholic Schools Week came to an end.

St. Mark Student Success

Vincent Spence

Since the last edition of The Paw Print, many grades and students have been working hard on some projects Here are some projects that students have been doing in school.

5th and 6th grade: 5th and 6th grade worked on their black history month projects. They had to pick a person who was related to science and/or math and make a poster on them. They were voted on by three judges, and there were prizes for: first, second, and third place. Here is how they did

5th Grade Winners:

1st : Boden S , Brennen I, Ken O

2nd: Kim N

3rd: Sally A and Beth K

6th Grade WInners

1st: Hanna N

2nd: Jade W and Amelia B

3rd: Amanda A-S

7th Grade: 7th grade had to write an informative essay on a topic they got to choose. There were different categories to choose from like history, stem, fashion, and more. Once they wrote their essay, they made a presentation to teach the class about their topic. There was no set winner, and everyone did really well. Here are two of my favorite presentations.

Xavier Berger: Xavier did the Suez Crisis. Quinn Allen, Jimmy Merriman, and Griffin Becker: They all worked on how legos have changed the world.

8th Grade: 8th grade worked on the Between Shades of Gray Social Justice and Activism presentation. They picked one of the 30 human rights articles to research and present on. Here is one of the presentations done by Ava Sendldorpher and Edith Jefferson:

Everyone who worked on these projects worked very hard.

Teacher Interviews

Mrs. Ostrander

This is Mrs. Ostrander´s first year teaching. Before teaching at St. Mark, she went to college at UMBC and majored in Environmental Studies. In 2022, Mrs. Ostrander came to St. Mark because she thought it would be a very good opportunity to find her role as a teacher She loves coming up with engaging activities for her 5th-grade ELA and 6th-grade social studies, and the amount of support she gets from the students and faculty Mrs O has an obsession with Marvel, which she shares with her husband. Her absolute favorite Marvel character is Captain Marvel.

Mrs Engel is the STEM and technology director here at St Mark She is originally from New Jersey, and as a child went to different public schools there. When she moved to Maryland in 2011, she taught 5th and 6th-grade science and math and was the Chair of Technology at Ashburton, a Baltimore City public school. In 2020, she started teaching at St. Mark because she fell in love with the Catonsville community, and the fact that she is in charge of technology, but she is also able to teach. Her favorite part about her job is helping teachers with technology and loves how she, “literally gets paid to play with legos ” She also loves how helpful everyone is, and how talented her students are A fun fact about her is when she was in middle school, she loved making websites to share with others.
