Great family da Farmer Teds Farm Park

Windmill Animal Farm

Farmer Ted's is an interactive children's activity park, sited on a working farm within the beautiful Lancashire countryside.

Windmill Animal Farm was first opened to the public in 1992 and offers visitors the chance to experience the every day running of an actual working farm while still having the chance to watch, feed, touch and play with animals.

The Farm Park's aim is to provide a fun, family orientated atmosphere where Mums and Dads will feel just as comfortable as the Kids. The attraction offers an educational, safe and fun place for the whole family to visit. We also run a membership scheme, birthday parties and a range of activities all year round! But on top of all that Farmer Ted's also specialise in providing educational day trips for the North West's schools by covering the national curriculum, in order to teach the children about farming, animals and food. For more information please ring 0151 526 0002 or visit www.farmerteds.com.

A New Ice Cream experience comes to Southport The Silcock family spanning 5 generations have been in Southport since 1949 and several years ago decided that one of the main things missing from their impressive portfolio was real homemade ice cream. The planning for this new venture started several years ago and they wanted their ice cream to stand out from the rest and be something different for the town. They spent a long time researching many flavours from Italy and what the best manufacturing techniques were and the best equipment to use for maximum quality. The results are an amazing and impressive range of ice cream, with over 40 flavours in their portfolio with 30 regularly on display and rotated at given intervals. A great favourite is Bailey’s with just enough of the famous liqueur to give it a great taste but not “put you over the limit”

They are fanatical about quality and all their ice cream is made from locally sourced milk and cream and Fabri flavours made with real fruit and ingredients and it’s all made on the premises to special recipes supplied by their award-winning flavour house. They spent many months’ trialling the different flavours getting them to the taste and quality they wanted. The new Flavours Ice Cream parlour can be found in Silcock’s Amusements on Nevill Street and it has an impressive range of ice cream sundaes, handmade waffles, deliciously thick ice cream milkshakes made with two generous scoops of ice cream as well as tea, speciality coffee, cakes and biscuits. You can order ice cream to take away so you can carry on enjoying this delicious treat at home.

Why not leave the car at home and walk? Walking, cycling and using public transport to get to and from school is great for your child. It can help them maintain a healthy lifestyle, increase their self confidence and independence and develop the skills they need to be safe pedestrians and cyclists. Walking to School is a great way of spending quality time with your child, saving money and being active, which can help your child have more concentration through their school day. Driving is often seen as the most convenient choice for parents with busy lives with many taking the view that by driving their children to school they are keeping them safe. However, by walking with your child to school or other short journeys you will be giving your child road sense, helping them to learn when and where it is safe to cross a road. You might want to meet up with other parents and children to make the walk more fun or you might be able to take turns with other parents to walk to

school with their children. Cycling on roads requires competence and this can be supported by taking a Cycling Proficiency Test, known as Bikeability and all primary schools in Sefton have an opportunity to offer safer cycling courses to pupils aged nine and over. If you live too far away from school, or you need the car for work, parking a five minute walk away will reduce school gate

congestion and you’ll both still be getting the health benefits of walking and developing your child’s road sense.

Plenty more information for pupils and parents is available at www.gotravelwise.com or contact the Travel Awareness & Road Safety team at Sefton Council by telephoning 0845 140 0845.

Parents, children and pets all enjoy the great outdoors ... and it’s healthier too.

Tots Get Toddling Teething and tantrums aren’t a problem for Sefton tots, as children take their first steps on the road to a healthy lifestyle. Taking part in the Active Totz sessions running across the borough, the programme has reached full capacity at Meadows Leisure Centre and Library in Maghull over recent weeks, with new sessions now witnessing forty toddlers and their parents/ carers attending each week. The success of the programme continues the trend evidenced at Dunes Splash World where, between the two sites, attendances are witnessing a regular register of twenty-five tots per session. The success of the programme was noted by Tina Pilkington, Senior Development Manager for the programme, “The Active Totz programme has continued to grow in popularity over recent months, so much so that we have been able to expand the range of sessions we offer to now include football specific classes and run two additional sites to cater for demand for the programme. Childhood obesity is an important issue for us and we continuously work with different teams to seek new and innovative ways to tackle this. With young children, instilling the importance of a healthy active lifestyle from a young age is of paramount importance if we are to overcome such problems and as such, the Active Totz sessions provide us with an opportunity to provide the foundations for this – that children can understand that sport and physical activity is fun and an excellent opportunity to socialise and develop life skills at the same time as keeping fit and active.” Active Totz sessions are open to children aged 2-5yrs of age and their parents/carers and provide accessible learning for all children including those with mild to moderate disabilities. Each session costs £2.00 per child and currently run at Dunes Splash World, Southport; Meadows Leisure Centre and Library, Maghull; Netherton Activity Centre and Lydiate Village Centre. If you would like further information log on to www.moveitsefton.co.uk or alternatively please call Active Totz on 0151 934 4092.

Healthy play creates healthy minds Today’s environment is a far cry from 30 years ago, when there were 50% less vehicles on the roads, four television channels and Atari was the height of video games. Nowadays, busy lifestyles usually mean both parents work (and work longer hours) and time for making fresh food and getting fresh air during the week can be limited. It’s a serious issue, when 25% of the population in the industrialised world is now classified as obese. Children are simply not getting enough physical exercise. continued overleaf

28 Thankfully, there is a strong movement to readdress this balance, from Jamie Oliver’s good food campaign, to the latest Every Child Outdoors push from the RSPB, Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust and Field Studies Council. These promote the ‘well being’ of children, getting out, playing, learning and participating in the fresh air, outdoors, exploring with their friends. Not only do children learn more – because they’re having fun – but it’s good for their mental health (the antidote to television and playing video games). The RSPB report highlights the role that schools should have in this process, and they are right. It’s important that such steps are taken a stage earlier. Habits are formed among the youngest children. Eating vegetables, fruit and proper cooked meals with their friends can have a positive influence as they grow up. In terms of play, research shows that outdoor play, from bug hunts to reading outdoors, camping in the garden to building dens in the wood enhances their social skills through teamwork, improves coordination and creates a love of nature and the outdoors.

Southport

92% of parents believe that nature and outdoor play still matter today according to the report. As parents and childcare providers we need to make sure we play our part.

Active Soccer Active Soccer provides fun, healthy and inclusive play through accessible, progressive and structured football programmes that compliment current government initiatives for all young people aged 4–14yrs. This spirit is fostered in an environment where everyone has a chance to play and learn, regardless of skill. Active Soccer's long-term goal is to give its participants positive experiences of sport through a fun and engaging experience that will increase their chances of a more sustainable active lifestyle.

Active Soccer is committed to delivering a fun and engaging experience to young people in order to facilitate their immediate, as well as long term, participation in physical activity. They say, “To achieve this all our courses and programmes are carefully structured to provide the most effective balance between competitions and play whilst also maintaining a recognisable environment similar to lessons attended during school.”

Active Soccer says, “Through our wealth of experience we have experienced at first hand the wide reaching benefits of structured physical activity on young people.

The company looks to position itself within the already established platform from which young people can become involved in physical activity and as a result look to offer a route to the government recommended targets for leading healthy lifestyles.

“More specifically our aim is to provide an experience that will benefit the child’s mental, physical and social health in a way that will benefit all parties involved, from parents and schools to local communities and the child themselves.”

Active Soccer adds, “At the heart of our company’s ethos is a commitment to the government’s target of ensuring young people receive five hours of physical activity per week in total, two of which are delivered by schools.

Immunisations

Why they are so important One of the most important things that a parent can do for their child is to make sure that they have all their routine childhood vaccinations. It’s the most effective way of keeping them protected against infectious diseases. Ideally, kids should have their jabs at the right age to protect them as early as possible and minimise the risk of infection.

For example, when every country had eliminated smallpox in 1979, vaccination against the disease was stopped. It’s hoped that polio will soon be eradicated, and that measles may follow. For more information on the types of Vaccines your children should have and at what age please ring your GP surgery or visit www.nhs.uk.

As a parent, you may not like seeing your baby or child being given an injection. However, vaccination is an important step in protecting your child against a range of serious and potentially fatal diseases. Vaccinations are quick, safe and extremely effective. Once your child has been vaccinated against a disease, their body can fight that disease more effectively if they come into contact with it. If a child isn’t vaccinated, they will be at increased risk of catching the illness. There will always be some children who are unavoidably unprotected because:

■ they can’t be vaccinated for medical reasons

■ they’re too young to be vaccinated

■ they can’t get to the vaccine services

■ for a few, the vaccine doesn’t work But if more parents have their children vaccinated, then more children in the community will be protected against catching an illness. This lowers the chance of an outbreak of the disease. The only time that it’s safe to stop vaccinating children against an illness is when the disease has been wiped out worldwide.

From So Talented! - to a West End Star! Ryan Collinson, a former student of So Talented! Academy in Southport, is now playing the lead role in the West End musical Billy Elliot to fantastic reviews. Romy Hollington, Company Director, says, "Ryan has done amazingly well to be performing at such a high standard at his age. He has shown true determination, combined with an immense amount of hard work to land the part as ‘Billy’ in the West End show. Ryan has gone on to really make the role his own and has been nicknamed the ‘Cheeky Billy’!” The Southport based school boy is one of the many successful students of the award winning So Talented Academy based in the historic Wayfarers Arcade on Lord Street, Southport. Students have gone on to secure places and prestigious performing arts colleges such as Italia Conti and Bird College along with acting and music degree courses at various universities.

Romy attributes the student’s successes to the high quality of teaching at So Talented! “Our staff are qualified teachers and experienced performers who have high expectations of all our students”. These high expectations are reflected in the outstanding examination results obtained with 100% pass rate with the vast majority of results being Distinctions. The So Talented! Academy provides a full programme of classes in music and performing arts for all ages and abilities, from the most ambitious performer to those seeking a fun, confidence building experience, in a friendly secure atmosphere. A GOOD READ

I Went to the Flea Market to See a Flea Written by Michael Courtwright Illustrated by Julie Steward

The Muppets Directed by James Bobin with a script by Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller, and stars Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper and many, many more. The focus of the story is Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, and his friends Gary (Segel) and Mary (Adams). Together, they discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman (Cooper) to raze the Muppet Theatre and drill for the oil recently discovered beneath the Muppets’ former stomping grounds.

123GO!_sefton_2011.indd 37

To stage The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise the $10 million needed to save the theatre, Walter, Mary and Gary help Kermit reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways. Fozzie now performs with a Reno casino tribute band called the Moopets, Miss Piggy is a plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris, Animal is in a Santa Barbara clinic for anger management, and Gonzo is a high-powered plumbing magnate. Watch for the release date.

This is the heart-warming story about a boy and his family who decide to go on an adventure to the local flea market. The boy is excited as he thinks he is going to see actual fleas and the book goes on to describe everything he sees at the market. Throughout the theme however, he cannot conceal his disappointment about not having seen any real fleas. The language is modern but the illustrations are classic and they compliment each other perfectly. It is the perfect children’s book that needs to be in every household this Summer.

Timeout Children’s Playcentre Timeout was founded on the 11th July 1998 and when it opened funds were very limited. However, this didn’t stop the owners who wanted to give local parents an alternative to simply leaving their children at the playcentre and collecting them later. They wanted to give families the feeling that they were special and wanted parents to feel they could join in the fun with their children if they wished. Or, if they fancied a well earned rest the option was always there to sit in comfort and relax with a cuppa, knowing that the kids were safe and could not wander from the building without them. In 2005 £250,000 was invested in the play centre and it was closed for 6 long weeks, however

it was all worth it in the end and the desired result was achieved. When the play centre reopened it was a fantastic relaxed environment for children and parents to enjoy themselves. Several safety points have been implemented as well as more equipment to keep the little ones busy. Owner Ian Attwell says, “We are pleased in what we have achieved but we still recognise that YOU are the most important people to us. From July 25th to September 2nd, Monday to Friday, Timeout is having a ‘Summertime Special.’ For one and a half hours children and parents can come down, have fun and the little ones can enjoy a special meal. To book please call 0151 525 3353 or visit www.timeoutchildrensplaycentre.co.uk.

‘Pots u paint’ is a new pottery painting workshop that has just opened in Burscough Wharf, so if you’re stuck in the Summer holidays come down and get creative! There is a huge range of things to paint from for all ages including fairies, money boxes, dinosaurs, footballers and lots more. For the little ones, why not do a hand or footprint on a plate or tile. Stuck for what to get a relative for their birthday or special occasion? A hand painted personalised vase or mug makes a great gift and you can have fun at the same time!

The Wharf is a new development in Burscough which houses clothes shops, gift shops, restaurants, crafts and an ice cream parlour too so you can make a day of it. The owner of ‘Pots u Paint’ first came to the Wharf’s opening in February and was won over by it’s charm and lovely

atmosphere but also felt it was lacking an activity for children. Children and adults can enjoy time at ‘Pots u Paint’ without it costing the earth as their philosophy has been to provide a fun, imaginative experience at an reasonable price. Since opening their doors, the response has been amazing with party bookings flooding in, due in part to the modern studio which overlooks the canal, as well as the warm welcome you will receive from the helpful staff. It really is the perfect venue for a children’s party! Bookings are not required so just drop in, although at busy times booking is recommended. 31981

This is an opportunity to make new discoveries and enhance the Sefton Coast for all.

Discover more about your local coastline … from Crosby, Formby, Ainsdale, Birkdale through to Southport. Visit our website and look out for events and activities; discover the footprints, be creative at art workshops, learn about wildlife on a walk…… Find out all about volunteering opportunities and opportunities to take part; recording footprints, creating wildlife ponds, clearing vegetation…… register your interest on our website. 30109

The sands come and go, and have done throughout time. Did you know the beach hides 4000year old footprints? Huge cattle called Auroch, Red Deer and even human footprints have been discovered! Ever wondered what the funny little brick buildings in the sand dunes are? – the remains of bunkers from World War II! This is a chance for everybody to discover more about the local coastline and to understand how the landscape has changed and how it may look in the future. It’s not just the sand that hides our past - many of you have fantastic stories, memories and images hidden away too.

Would you like to share those memories? This is an opportunity to do just that. Existing networks of footpaths, cycle paths and trails are here to be discovered, whilst new ones will be created, along with an information centre. We want you to know about all these things, by providing more and better information, varied sources of this information; leaflets, posters, web pages, Facebook, Twitter, information boards, downloadable visual and audio resources, the list is endless. If paper and technology are not your thing, then join in, wherever your interests lie – conservation, wildlife, history or landscape interpretation you can be involved, maybe creating new ponds or clearing vegetation.

www.visitsouthport.com/seftons-natural-coast/seftons-landscape-partnership The Landscape Partnership Scheme is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund until December 2013.

Is your child safe? Every child in the UK who goes to school has web access so it is more important now than it has ever been to make their experience as safe as possible. Kids can be computer pros from an early age, children as young as seven years old can learn how to type and are becoming more computer literate than their parents. But the question many parents are asking is how do we keep up with the trends and make their experience as secure as possible? We have put together bits of advice from around the internet on how you can make your child's internet experience as secure as possible. The best thing to do is to talk to your children and teach them about Internet safety, especially when it comes to social networking sites such as Facebook. Remind them to: Never share their password with anyone, understand their privacy settings, report people that violate Facebook's Statement of Rights and Responsibilities and block anyone that might be sending unwanted content. The Government has set up a council for child internet safety, this is an invaluable tool for parents who are new to the web. The organisation's aim is to work in partnership to keep children and young people safe online. Thinkuknow.co.uk advises parents to: ■ Encourage them only to upload pictures that you as their parents / carer would be happy to see – anything too sexy to be passed round the dinner table should NOT make it on to the web. ■ It's also not a good idea to post pictures which can identify the school which your child attends since this could help someone locate them. ■ Tell your children not to post their phone number or email address on their homepage. ■ Ask them to show you how to use a social networking site - getting involved will empower them to share the experience with you. For further information on internet safety you can visit: www.thinkuknow.co.uk/Parents/FAQ/SocialNetworking/ http://childnet-int.org/ http://cybermentors.org.uk/

Lunchbox ideas Your kids' lunchboxes are their fuel for the rest of the school day so why not make it a healthy treat for them?

Many children prefer to take a lunchbox to school rather than eat school dinners every day, and research shows that over 5.5 billion lunchboxes are packed each year in the UK by parents for their children. It's the ideal time to encourage them to take up a healthy and balanced adult diet - but it doesn't need to be boring. The best place to start is by swapping foods high in sugar and salt - crisps and processed snacks - for fruit and vegetables, so why not replace the snacks with apples or bananas, or carrots, which you can either serve on their own or include as tasty sandwich fillings. Fizzy drinks like cola and lemonade are also high in sugar, so for a healthy alternative why not add a refreshing bottle of fruit juice to their lunchbox? Flavoured milk is another fun way to liven up lunchtime, so there's no excuse not to get creative. Best of all, you can still tempt your child's sweet tooth while taking away the sugar out, by swapping cakes and chocolate for a currant bun, which is a great way to make school dinners a real delight. With so many tips and suggestions on offer there's no need to make a meal out of school lunches.

Different But The Same

We are all different but the same! That was the message of a unique book of poems produced by Year 6 pupils across Sefton with support from the Complementary Education Service and the Partnership and Communications team at Children, Schools and Families.

‘Different But The Same’ is a collection of poems written by Sefton children and built around the themes of equality, diversity and cohesion as a result very successful workshops carried out by Peter Yip, Equality and Diversity Coordinator and his former colleague Ann Kelly. The idea behind the book was that children would have something tangible to show for

their excellent efforts but also that Sefton would have a living document that could be used by teachers and other professionals within Children, Schools and Families. Following consultation the book was designed and produced to resemble an exercise book that children would use at school.

The book of poems is now available to view online using pageturner software by clicking the following link: http://bit.ly/gV1fqI For more information regarding equality, diversity and cohesion in Sefton’s schools please contact Peter Yip, Equality and Diversity Coordinator at Sefton’s Complementary Education Service by email: peter.yip@sefton.gov.uk

Make a difference

Give a child a chance and There is a shortage of foster carers and adopters in Sefton. Right now, children where you live are in need of a thing that most of us take for granted – home. Just as children in need of foster care and adoption come from different backgrounds, so can foster carers and adopters. Training is provided and we are able to offer financial support. Children need your help. Through no fault of their own, life has been difficult for them. If you have room in your home and your family to care for a child and make sure their voice is heard you could help. Fostering can also develop your own skills, as foster carers have discovered: Phil and Sylvia: ‘Fostering helps you to build confidence. You have to be strong when young people need you to be strong for them. Fostering has given us a wider perspective on life. Learning about what difficulties can arise in families helps you to realise how lucky you are.’ ‘We enjoy the challenge of working with different children and thinking what will work for them. It is good to be able to help young people and their parents and where possible help them return home. Peter and Gaye: ‘Fostering can be hard at times, but the good times and happy moments are always strongest’. The best part is when we see children or young adults who have been with us and are now doing really well-that makes it all

123GO!_sefton_2011.indd 56

57

and change their life forever worthwhile. There are lots who keep in touch and it is always great to see them.’ ‘They didn’t know what it was to smile until they came here. To anyone thinking about fostering or adoption, we would say ‘give it a go’, you have to be dedicated and it has its ups and downs but it’s worth every minute.’ Jenny* experienced foster care as a child and later decided to become a foster carer: ‘I joined a foster family at the vulnerable age of 15 where my life could have gone either way. I finally got an adult who was there for me and was willing to stick up for me. Listening to my foster parents on how they

started in life from nothing and yet achieved so much motivated me. It made me realise that I could have a better life for myself if I wanted to. If it was not for other people taking me in and looking after me as their own, I would not be the person I am now. Children in Sefton need a place to call home. Whatever your background, if you do one thing today, enquire about fostering and adoption and make a real difference to a child’s life. A sense of belonging A perfect way for the children to socialise and join in with many different activities, not only in the Summer holidays but all year round, is by joining Cubs, Scouts, Brownies or Guides. These organisations have been going since the Scout Movement at the turn of the century when Robert BadenPowell, Lieutenant General in the British Army, founded the Scouts as a means for children to develop emotionally and physically while enjoying themselves. The Cubs, Guides and Brownies all followed swiftly behind priding themselves on teaching youngsters essential skills to equip them for later life while having fun. Although they may not spend so much of their time tying knots and building fires as they did years ago the principal is the same with modern technology incorporated into weekly meetings. Children are also encouraged to feel a sense of ‘belonging’ as members still wear the famous uniforms identifying what club they belong to. For more information on Brownies and Guides in Sefton please visit: www. girlguidingnwe.org.uk. For Cubs and Scouts, visit: www.scouts.org.uk
