Dear Champlain students, End of semester is finally here which means that the library will be packed with people writing last minute papers, studying for finals or finishing up their cal hours. It also means that I will be pulling out my hair and will have big black circles under my eyes (eeekkk). I advise that you stock up on caffeine and get your essays written sooner than later or else you will probably be pulling out your hair like me. Along with the end of semester comes summer, which means swimming, relaxing, doing whatever you want when you want to. Therefore, it’s time to take out your bathing suits and fill your closet with summer clothes because the sun is finally on its way. Here at the Word we have already been dreaming of the moment when we get to sleep in past 7 am or don’t have to worry about studying. Anyways I should probably end my letter before I get told I am taking to long to write it, therefore let me inform you about this issue. In the campus news you get a recap of the events that took place during April. If you are into sports and want to read about the new basketball coach or find out who won awards at the sport banquet check out the sport section. The French connection section contains an article on a new found model for Prada and an article about the elections with many more. We also have an opinion section with some opinions on various subjects. Have a great summer!

Graduation 2011

A

nother sign that spring in the air is that planning is well underway for Graduation 2011. Graduation is both a happy and sad time of year as we celebrate the accomplishments of some of Champlain’s finest students but we also say good-bye as well. Champlain has 286 students attending graduation this year, which is a record number for the college. But we had nearly 800 students eligible. So why do so few students go? Not interested? Parents aren’t forcing them? This will be the third time I have had the pleasure of attending graduation and I have to be honest that I did not attend my convocation when I graduated from that other CEGEP that starts with a D (Not important). For me graduation is one of the highlights of the year, and it is something that looking back now I wish I would have attended. Think of it is as the Stanley Cup (a hockey trophy for the winning team). You, just like a team work hard all year, go through your ups and downs, sometimes you have to go out on your own and sometimes you get the help of your friends (teammates) but at the end of the year, you did it. You won the cup. This to me is what graduation is all about. I have often thought they should change the name of

Graduation to congratulations!! You have accomplished what so few people do (about 20% according to research). This is your chance to stand up and say, I did it!! For all those late nights of studying, all those papers that you handed in, all the times you had to pull yourself out of bed in minus 20 weather to make it to the college. This is something to be proud of and also celebrated. In the end this is what Graduation is all about, it is a celebration of all the hard work that you have put in at the college. Graduation night is a time to reflect on the memories that you have had at the college, the friends that you have met, the teachers that have helped you and the parents and relatives that have made it all possible. But mostly it is a moment for you. You are the one person responsible for what you have accomplished. College is all about memories that you will carry with you for a lifetime and this will be one that you will never forget. The Champlain Graduation takes place on the grounds of the college on Thursday, January 16th at 7:30pm.

Curiouser and curiouser! Champlain Theatre Club’s production of “Alice in Wonderland” is looking like it will be colourful and entertaining. By Dominique Beauregard Cazabon The choice of “Alice” for this semester’s play was a clear one. After taking on the dramatic monster that was Oedipus last semester, the members of Theatre Club decided they should set their sights on something a little bit more lighthearted. What’s more, they figured it was about time for the lead role to be a female one. With all its charming absurdity, Alice in Wonderland was the perfect play. However, the play’s bright and fantasy-like storyline does bring about many challenges. With 27 characters to play and intricate sets to build, the CTC has been extremely busy preparing for their show dates. The 15 actors participating in the play have gone through extensive preparation for their roles, from swing dancing to verbing scenes(assigning a verb to each intention in a line, and transforming these verbs into actions while

acting out the scenes). “We are not re-enacting any version of the movie,” says Anne-Sophie Grenier, vice-president of the CTC, “Students can expect to see their favourite characters with a new interpretation.” The CTC will be presenting “Alice in Wonderland” at the Champlain College auditorium on Friday, April 29, and Sunday, May 1st, at 8PM. Tickets are 7$ and can be purchased in advance at the Theatre Club, or at the door.

Feminism Club sees the light of day at Champlain By:Vanessa Nunes

The First Ever Food Club

“Re-inventing the F word is a club that is working towards changing people’s perception of feminism, leaving behind stereotypes in order to focus on the core issues affecting women today. Feminism should no longer be a swear word,” explains club president Anna Orton-Hatzis.

By:Vanessa Nunes This semester, Champlain is home to a new club called the “food club”. The club creates various meals after school where all its members can participate. One of their most recent events is the “Giant Grilled Cheese”. In this event the members created a huge grilled cheese and were then able to each have a slice. If you love food just as much as this club does and would like to join the food club you can find them in the bunker or you can see their president Alexandre Dodier.

The club is located in front of CSA and produces various activities to inform students about feminism. Its goal is to eliminate the negative images that our society associates with feminism. In order to do so they hold weekly discussions on issues that are impacting women, they have petitions against governments who oppress women and they are currently attempting to get a subscription to a feminism magazine. The club president and its members are dedicated to promoting awareness and supporting women to become strong, independent people.

Town Hall Meeting

On April 20, 2011 Champlain College Saint Lambert hosted a town hall meeting in which a mix of Saint Lambert and Brossard-La Prairie riding candidates for the Green Party, the NDP, Liberal Party, Conservative Party and the Bloc Quebecois were invited to participate, however the Bloc Quebecois declined the invitation. The meeting began with a short presentation from the Jeune Democrate team who won first place by defeating College Andre-Grasset on the final question. The meeting continued with opening statements from each candidate and was followed by questions asked from students.

When the topic of the environment was brought up the Green Party and the NDP Party seemed to share the same points of view. They both believe that we need to look into a better source of energy which does not pollute the environment.

All Candidates answered the questions to the best of their ability. Qais Hamidi, the Conservative candidate for Saint-Lambert, answered the question about whether or not funding to the arts would be cut my stating that they would continue to apply the same concept they applied in 2008.

After the questions were asked the debate ended with final statements from the candidates. The town hall meeting allowed many students to get informed about the elections and to better choose to vote for the candidate which represent their views best.

The only candidate to answer a question that many had on their minds but that was never answered was Liberal candidate Alexandra Mendes. “We are committed to replacing the Champlain Bridge within the next ten years,” was what she said on the controversial topic of the Champlain Bridge.

“In 2008 the conservatives did not decrease funding for the arts instant we redistributed the funding based on which programs deserved it,” stated Hamidi. Photocredit: blogs.sfu.ca

Montreal’s Festivals By Jennifer Tchervenkov For over twenty years now, Montreal has hosted two very popular festivals: the famous Montreal Jazz Festival and the hilarious Montreal Just for Laughs Festival. Both of these have been huge successes and are the perfect way to entertain oneself during the summer. So if you have nothing planned for the months of June and July, come to one of these fine festivals. From Saturday, June 25th to Monday, July 4th, Montreal will be hosting its annual Jazz Festival. This event was inaugurated on July 2nd, 1980, by the talented Ray Charles. Since then it has become the world’s biggest jazz festival with performances by outstanding musicians such as Miles Davis, James Brown and Stevie Wonder. This year the festival proudly presents the famous Canadian jazz singer and pianist Diana Krall. Although all her tickets are currently sold out, there are many more talented performances by upcoming artists like Ana Moura and George Wein.

As the Jazz Festival slowly ends, another one of Montreal’s greatest festivals begins. The Just for Laughs Festival starts on July 5th and ends on July 31st. Always aiming to “make people happy,” this festival brings hilarious shows that are sure to make you laugh. This year the Just for Laughs Festival presents shows like “Craig Ferguson’s International House of Comedy” and the Just pour Rire’s “Le party à Mercier.” Tickets for the Jazz and Just for Laughs Festivals are on sale now. If you are on a tight budget, look out for the free outdoor shows both festivals have to offer. Do not miss the opportunity to be serenaded by wonderful music, or to laugh at outrageously funny jokes. For more information concerning either one of these festivals, visit their websites: www.montrealjazzfest. com and www.hahaha.com.

Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son By Max Lett Lafond I had spare change and the choice came down to a 3000 calorie Burger King trio or going to see Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son. Now both options were equally deteriorative to my health, mental and physical but I was closer to Famous Players so the choice was made and my mind would take one for the team. Big Mommas is the third in a trilogy of films that has comedian Martin Lawrence masquerading as an obese elderly woman in order to fight crime. This description alone should suffice in deterring anyone from seeing the movie. Martin Lawrence has, for the want of a good script, entangled himself within yet another in a string of hackneyed comedies devoid of effort or forethought. The humour, as clichéd as Lawrence himself seems to have become, failed in every sense to hit the mark. It pains me to see a movie like Big Mommas because I’m not extremely hard to please in this way. A fart joke here and there, maybe an explosion and I can be made reasonably content. Sadly, the most one can expect is the screwball hijinks which ensue when a grown man and his son dress like women to outwit a drug cartel. As if to highlight the steep decline of Martin Lawrence’s career, he is paired in Big Mommas with Brandon T. Jackson, best known for his role in Tropic Thunder as rapper Alpa Chino. Jackson, whose star may have been on the rise prior to this film, is given no credit for his appearance; instead being dragged down into the fetid mire inhabited by all has bin comedians like Lawrence. If you weren’t already solidly deterred from seeing a movie whose title begins with Big Mommas and is the third instalment in its franchise, then I can attest to the virtues of avoiding it.

Eminem is MTL leaves me P.O.ed and here’s why: by: Meaghan Tardif-Bennett Hey fellow music lovers. It’s been a while. For those dedicated troops who participate in Montreal’s festivals and shows, you will know that Osheaga’s music lineup was announced on April 12th. This festival is one of the city’s most celebrated musical events. Taking place over the span of a weekend, Osheaga has been known for having the likes of Arcade Fire, Snoop Dogg, Weezer, M.I.A, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Coldplay to headline, with countless other bands to join them. For lack of a better metaphor or comparison, it’s perfection. I’ve declared myself a veteran to this gathering. I have claimed the front row of the main stage for the past 2 years. I’ve spent over 13 hours standing around with little food, bathroom breaks, or shade – and I loved every minute of it. Declaring myself a mementos magnet, I have caught over 7 set lists, 2 drumsticks (one of Weezer’s), 4 guitar picks, 1 head of Pavement’s band member’s bobble head (be jealous), and my totem/source of power: Arcade Fire’s tambourine. I’m not here to list my collection of gems – I have my Twitter for that. My goal is to let you guys know that I have some idea as to what I am talking about when I say that the Osheaga lineup was a disappointment. For the first time in Osheaga’s history, they extended the weekend to a three day event. Initially, this seemed fantastic. The price for a ticket is $217.00 all inclusive. Give or take that’s $30.00 less than Coachella’s tickets (headliners have received great feedback, namely Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon, The Strokes, and Kanye West.) Considering the price and overall length of the

festival, the avid attendees (myself included) were expecting something that would shatter the sound barrier and make the year 2011 one for the books. These hopes all came crashing down when it was announced that Eminem would be one of the headliners. Now hear me out! I love rap and hip hop (I have named most of my precious items after rappers) and Eminem’s cool and stuff, and I understand that it has been over 10 years since the man has been permitted to step foot on a stage in Canada (having been banned after bringing a chainsaw on stage for his Slim Shady Tour in the U.S.) But with other headliners such as Death Cab For Cutie, Elvis Costello, The Imposters and Kid Cudi, I just feel as though not every music genre is getting a voice. With heavyweights like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, and The Strokes coming out with music this year (The Strokes even rumored to launch a 2nd album to follow Angles by the end of this year) you would think that Osheaga organizers would have jumped at the opportunity to represent the largest musical demographic and take one of these bands on. All beef aside, I’m still super stoked (not stroked) for Osheaga this year. I probably won’t go and see Eminem, though it will be talked about for years and I’ll regret it immediphoto credit: kingice.com ately after his performance. Here’s my advice to all those upset by the lineup: listen to Transatlanticism and Ashin’ Kusher. You’ll get over it. I also have advice for Osheaga organizers and Julian Casablancas: Call me. Let’s work something out. To everyone else, good luck with exams. I’ll catch you in the halls with my headphones on.

Cavaliers football team puts last season behind them By: Justin Blanchard The 2010 Champlain College Saint Lambert Cavaliers football season was not one to remember: 0-9 record, last ranked offense, last ranked defense, worst point differential, least touchdowns. The list goes on and on. The Cavaliers were, in a word, abysmal. Hard to imagine that just three years ago this very same Cavaliers program went undefeated with a 13-0 record en route to a AA division II provincial championship. But all of that is now a thing of the past. The players have turned the page on last year and are already looking forward to the upcoming season. “[We] just have to put it behind [us]. 0-9—nobody likes losing. It’s not fun. But I’m sure this year we’ll just forget about last season,” says returning Cavaliers captain Dane Steele. “You can’t have that in the back of your mind at all when you play football,” resonated fellow 3rd year veteran, receiver Nathan Groves. At first, seeing such poor team statistics would make it easy to assume the coaching staff deserves

the bulk of the blame, be it due to a bad offensive philosophy or an undisciplined defense. However, the players agree that the core of the problem lied not within the play-calling, but was rather due to a lacking aspect that is fundamental to achieving success in football: team chemistry. “We had some potential [last season] but we didn’t work as a team. Nobody really wanted to play,” says Steele. “If we all played as a team, we could do anything.” For its part, the organization has made multiple changes to the coaching staff, none more significant than the promotion of team manager and last year’s quarterbacks coach, Christian Collin, to offensive coordinator. Collin is replacing interim offensive coordinator Joe Eveleigh at the position, who stepped in after last season’s original offensive coordinator left the team midway through the season. Now it’s up to the players to do their part and form a team rather than a group of individuals. “The coach cannot create that [team] chemistry.

It’s really about the players you have. The players have to take it upon themselves and want to be together,” says head coach Rodger Phillips. Regardless of last year’s disappointing season, the Cavaliers still have a very positive outlook on the upcoming season, and a new attitude is spreading throughout the team in many ways. “People who didn’t train so much [last year] and took it for granted, this year are actually stepping it up, training and hitting the gym hard,” says Groves. The team understands that bouncing back from a winless season to make the playoffs the following year isn’t easy, but knows that it’s possible. “We can achieve at least 5 wins this season,” says Groves. Phillips too, is confident that reaching the postseason is an obtainable goal this year. “I expect to make the playoffs. I’m a very positive coach. I believe that if we play well we can make the playoffs,” he says. The Cavaliers kick off their 2011 football season this August.

You’re Re-Hired! Familiar Face Appointed Head Coach of Cavaliers Basketball Team By: Justin Blanchard A familiar face will be returning to Champlain College Saint-Lambert this year. On March 23rd, Craig Norman was appointed the new head coach for the Cavaliers AAA men’s basketball team following the departure of Max Paulhus-Gosselin at the end of last season. While Norman may not be a household name for us students, he is certainly no stranger to the Cavaliers basketball program. Coach Norman began his collegiate head coaching career with the Cavaliers men’s basketball team in the 1995-’96 season, leading the squad for three years before moving on to coach at the university level in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) at Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario for seven years. This was followed by a six-year stint as the head coach for the McGill University Redmen. After a year off from coaching, Norman has returned to courtside at Champlain College. “We’re really excited to have Craig back with us [this season]”, said Champlain Athletics Director Vince Amato.

Norman holds an extensive list of accomplishments as a basketball player, most notably being named Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian in 1982 while playing at Dawson College and earning a spot on the Quebec provincial team during that time, as well as earning All-Canadian second-team honors while playing five seasons for the Concordia University Stingers. The Greenfield Park native’s biggest achievements came as a coach in 2004, when he was named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) basketball Conference Coach of the Year and CIS Coach of the Year for the Royal Military College (RMC) Paladins. Norman turned around a struggling RMC basketball program from last place in the league after it lost 21 out of 22 games in the ’01’02 season, to a 14-8 record and a second place finish in the standings the following year. A coach that is recognized for such an accomplishment certainly aims for no less than a nation-

al titles from every team he coaches. “Our goal will always be to win a national championship,” Norman said. Fortunately for Norman, few steps will be needed to achieve that goal at Champlain College, as he takes over a strong Cavaliers team that took home the bronze medal last season. “I expect big things from the players and I think they expect big things from themselves based on the way they performed at the end of last year,” continued Norman. For Amato, however, Norman’s addition to the organization means much more than an anticipated productive 2011-2012 basketball season and beyond for the Cavaliers. “He is going to bring a wealth of knowledge not just of basketball but of… being a true leader for student athletes on campus and we’re really looking forward to working with him as well as we see the team get better and better,” said Amato.

quand Cesar a crié : « Stop ! Ton visage me plaît !

L’importance d’aller voter Par Frederick Chagnon

ALLEZ VOTER!!

Opinion Science Fiction vs. Fact By Max Lett Lafond At this time, in our society it’s hard to say exactly what is and what isn’t possible anymore. So manifold and multiform are the technological devices we have at our disposal, and so rich and varied are their respective permutations and applications, that science fiction is truly being given a run for its money. Historically, there has not been a shortage of writers and essayists who’ve attempted, in moments of sheer deluded fancy, to imagine what mysterious and unnamed advances the future may hold. However, on various occasions they have effectively predicted some of the more rudimentary services we now regard with quaint normality and sometimes complete nonchalance. Whether it be the immediate transmission of events taking place the world over or excursions into the yawning gulfs of space, science fiction writers have for the most part acted simply as genetic repositories which can peer into the logical future of their species’ evolution. But now, with the advent of touch sensitive tablet computers like Apple’s iPad or Microsoft’s hitherto unnamed reproduction, and gaming consoles like the Xbox 360 and PS3 and their motion capture accessories, what, truly, can there be still left to imagine? There was a time when science fiction could foresee things yet to come, but now our world and its technology

seems to have tapped the presumably infinite well of human imagination. Has science fact truly caught up to science fiction? Will the latter soon drop the mantle of ‘fiction’ altogether and sink sullenly into simple science? As many as 40 years ago, Douglas Adams wrote of a fictional device called ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ which worked as a galactic repository for all knowledge of the known universe. It was the size of a small book and held within it an infinite memory bank filled with facts and opinions. Star Trek’s first series introduced the tricorder, a device which operated to the same effect by analysing anything it scanned. These were mere tools to titillate the imaginations of readers and viewers as well as progress storylines. But now they are altered realities all too easily dismissed as menial contrivances for our pleasure. The digital civilisation, for that can be our only real descriptive, is responsible for the advent of impossibilities such as space travel, humanoid robots, genome mapping and tools of military warfare all too unspeakable to describe. It is only a matter of time before dreams akin to teleportation and even invisibility are introduced as just another product of man’s ever waxing power. The digital plane has all but shown us the palm of its victory.

Say No to the Pharmaceutical Show By Dayna Mcdz With the way pharmaceutical companies are behaving, it is not difficult to believe that they are only in it for the money. Do you know that pharmaceutical companies target not only the population, but doctors as well? Many doctors get paid to unnecessarily prescribe drugs to their patients. This isn’t about how much money doctors and pharmaceutical companies profit from the nation. Rather, it is about how medicine is portrayed to us as the only solution. For instance, just last year I was diagnosed as borderline anaemic because of my change in diet. For those of you who are unaware of this problem, it is caused by an iron deficiency that lowers the amount of red blood cells present in the body. Symptoms include weakness, fatigue, lack of energy and dizziness. These symptoms are present because there is not enough oxygen being delivered throughout the body. After my diagnosis, the doctor’s first response was to write me off with prescriptions for iron supplements. There were no questions about how I was not eating enough red meat or foods with iron in them. At the time, even though I was a meat-eater, I lacked iron from my change in eating habits. Upon notifying him that I would simply not accept the supplements and requesting an iron-based nutrition plan as an alternative, he looked at me as though I had gone mad. This illustrates why I do not support pharmaceutical drugs. Left and right, people are popping pills, running out to

get flu shots and trying out new drugs. Do they not realize that these corporations are coming up with ways to make us spend our money? I believe that going the natural route can make us stronger and help us conquer the diseases, instead of the diseases eventually becoming stronger than us. It is proven that through Darwin’s concepts of evolution that a species will either adapt to changes to survive, or it will die out. Why have we gotten to the point where we are no longer becoming stronger, but are in fact getting weaker, while infections, viruses and diseases around us gain more power? Many of my friends and family are constantly getting sick, whereas I seldom become ill. I use natural remedies to solve problems. When I do become ill, my body is better equipped to start fighting it because it must rely on itself, rather than multiple drugs all year round. For those of you who are afraid to throw out all forms of medicine, you can seek out and get knowledge on homeopathy. This form of treatment is an immunity booster that applies the concept of less is more. Instead of using high doses, it is extremely diluted. It is believed that these small doses regularly provide prevention and builds up tolerance. Give your body the chance to grow stronger by checking it out.
