TORLEIF THEDÉEN

Torleif Thedéen has been a regular performer on the international concert stage for over 25 years. He has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras including the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra, Wiener Symphoniker, Dresdner Philharmonie, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Auckland Philharmonia as well as all the major Scandinavian orchestras. He has regularly collaborated with the most renowned conductors including Esa-Pekka Salonen, Neeme Järvi, Mario Venzago, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Sir Andrew Litton, Sakari Oramo, Osmo Vänskä, Sir Mark Elder, Václav Neumann, Leif Segerstam, Paavo Berglund, Franz Welser-Möst, James DePreist, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, and Jac van Steen. He is also a passionate chamber musician and has performed at prestigious concert venues throughout the world including the Wigmore Hall in London, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Salle Pleyel in Paris, and the Philharmonie in Berlin. He has also performed at many international festivals, including those in Schleswig-Holstein, Salzburg, Utrecht, Dubrovnik, Helsinki, Kuhmo, Bath, Bordeaux, Bergen, Verbier, and the Prague Spring Festival. Mr. Thedéen has released numerous recordings including the complete Schnittke works for cello, Britten’s solo cello suites, the concertos of Dvořák, Lalo, Schumann, Elgar, Saint-Saëns, Kabalevsky, Bloch, Kokkonen, and Shostakovich on labels including BIS, CPO, Decca, EMI, and Deutsche Grammophon. In 1995 his Shostakovich cello concertos recording won the Cannes Classical Award.

PERFORMERS

Pianist Wanting Cheng was born in Chongqing City, China where she began piano lessons with Zhiwei Zhang at the age of 11. As a solo pianist, Ms. Cheng has performed in the Chopin Marathon and the Liszt Marathon concert series at the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing in 2010 and 2011. She has participated in various international festivals and master classes such as the Beijing International Music Festival and Academy, the KAWAYI Master Class in Beijing, as well as the Duxbury Music Festival in Boston. Ms. Cheng obtained second place in the Second Cadanza Cup National Piano Competition in China and was a semifinalist in the Seventh International F. Chopin Competition for Young Pianists. She also participated in the Second China Changchun International Piano Festival and Competition. Ms. Cheng is pursuing her bachelor of music degree at the Manhattan School of Music, under the tutelage of Jeffrey Cohen. She is a recipient of the Edith Kriss Scholarship. Jisu Choi began playing the violin at the age of 6 under the tutelage of Junghwa Lee. She has worked closely with Amir Shiff, Kristin Lee, and Siwoo Kim as well as members of the Juilliard String Quartet, American String Quartet, and Israeli Army String Quartet. She is currently studying chamber music with Lucie Robert. Ms. Choi was awarded second prize


at the Dong-A News Music Competition, third prize at the LISMA Competition, and first prize at the Crescendo Music Competition, after which she performed the winner’s recital at Weill Recital Hall. She has performed at Uijeongbu Arts Center as a member of the Uijeongbu Youth Symphony Orchestra and at Avery Fisher Hall as a member of the World Peace Orchestra. She has performed under the baton of conductors including InChul Kim, Gintaras Rinkevičius, and Alexander Markov. Ms. Cho was in the Pre-College Division at Manhattan School of Music and is currently pursuing her bachelor of music at the same institution with Isaac Malkin. She is the recipient of the Mark E. Tracey Memorial Band Scholarship and a scholarship recipient at the Manhattan School of Music. Pianist Fadi Deeb is part of a promising new generation of Middle Eastern musicians whose enticing interpretations have captivated audiences worldwide. Mr. Deeb has distinguished himself in many competitions, capturing the first prize at the Marcel Khalife Competition and the Roma per Jerusalem Competition, Palest’In & Out, and Ackerman Chamber Music Competition. In 2012 he won the Stony Brook Concerto Competition performing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and is also a recipient of the prestigious Fulbright Grant. Mr. Deeb is currently pursuing his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree at SUNY Stony Brook with Gilbert Kalish. Originally from Nantong, China, Tianyang Gao began to play violin at the age of five. He won first prize in the Solo Violin Competition (Shanghai region) in 2001 and second prize in the junior category of the National Violin Competition held in September 2006. In 2013 he participated in the Kneisel Hall Music Festival and has also performed with the Shanghai Opera Orchestra in He Luting Concert Hall. In 2014, he was a finalist in the Schoenfeld Violin Competition. He currently studies with Ronald Copes at The Juilliard School. Violinist Julia Glenn’s playing has been described as “gripping” (New York Times) and “fully focused and betraying not one whit of insecurity” (Boston Musical Intelligencer). She has concertized widely as both a solo and chamber musician and has recently appeared on stages including Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Hall, Sanders Theatre, Jordan Hall, the Beijing Recital Hall, and Shanghai Concert Hall. Upcoming fall engagements include continuing work on a solo album and chamber projects with Alan Gilbert and the Aeolus Quartet. In the spring she will make concerto appearances with the North Bay Symphony and the New Juilliard Ensemble; the latter will mark the world premiere of Milton Babbitt’s violin concerto. Ms. Glenn has a deep interest in exploring and sharing the music and culture of China. In addition to her role as performer, she also draws upon her background in linguistics to open up fruitful avenues in the arena of Chinese music theory. As a fluent Chinese speaker, she is particularly interested in the interface between lexical and musical tone. Most recently, she conducted research with phonology-focused music theorist Alfred Cramer and gave a lecture-performance at Harvard University exploring contour remediation in Bright Sheng’s The Stream Flows for solo violin. A thirdyear doctoral candidate at The Juilliard School, Ms. Glenn holds degrees from Harvard University and the New England Conservatory. She plays a Vuillaume on generous loan from Ms. Rhonda Rider.


Daniel Hamin Go, an avid chamber musician, has worked closely with members of the Juilliard and American String Quartets and is currently under the guidance of Lucie Robert. He was awarded first prize at the Kiwanis Music Festival competition and second prize at the OMFA competition as a member of the Aurelius String Quartet. As an orchestral musician, he has played in major venues in Canada such as the Roy Thomson, Koerner, and George Weston Halls, and has performed under the baton of conductors such as Duilio Dobrin, Alain Trudel, and Kenneth Cooper. He graduated from the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy where he was a member of the ‘DownBeat’ award-winning Academy Orchestra. Next month, he will participate in the New York String Orchestra Seminar under the leadership of Jaime Laredo. He has worked with prominent musicians such as David Geringas and Bonnie Hampton, and has participated in master classes with Amanda Forsyth, Anthony Ross, and Astrid Schween. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music studying with Julia Lichten. He plays a cello made by Albin Paulus, generously loaned by the Carlsen Cello Foundation. An avid chamber musician, violist Molly Goldman has collaborated with David Coucheron, Steven Doane, Juliana Athayde, and Rosemary Elliott, among others. As a soloist Ms. Goldman has performed with the Ohio Chamber Orchestra, the Contemporary Youth Orchestra, and the Eastman Philharmonia Orchestra after winning the concerto competition at Eastman as a sophomore. In past summers, Ms. Goldman has held fellowships at the Aspen Music Festival and School, the Colorado College Summer Music Festival, and the Bowdoin International Music Festival. Most recently she was invited to participate in the Sibelius Academy’s Creative Dialogue Symposium. Ms. Goldman is currently both a Morse Fellow and a Music Advancement Program Fellow at Juilliard. At Eastman School of Music, Ms. Goldman obtained degrees in music performance and music education with certification, in addition to receiving the prestigious Performance Certificate. Major teachers have included Carol Rodland, Jeffrey Irvine, and Stephen Sims among others. Ms. Goldman is a second year master of music student at The Juilliard School under the tutelage of Roger Tapping. Vietnamese cellist Phuc Phan has traveled and enjoyed successes in many different parts of the world as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestra member. After completing a performance degree at the Vietnam National Institute of Music, he was selected to attend United World College of the Adriatic, Italy where he had the opportunity to study chamber music with members of Trio di Parma and Trio di Trieste. Notable performances include his collaborations with members of the Emerson String Quartet, bassoonist Frank Morelli, and cellist Colin Carr. Mr. Phan is a current member of the Stony Brook Baroque Ensemble and regularly collaborates with the Contemporary Chamber Ensembles as well as composers at Stony Brook University. His musical interests also include jazz, rock, tango, and bluegrass. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Luther College, Iowa; and Master of Music from Stony Brook University. Currently, he is pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Stony Brook University under the instruction of British cellist Colin Carr. Hélène Werner is a cellist and pianist born and raised in Montana. Ms. Werner is actively involved in contemporary and chamber music. She performs frequently with the New


Juilliard Ensemble and is a member of the Calliope Quartet and Werner Chamber Quartet. Ms. Werner has participated in the Juilliard String Quartet Seminar and in masterclasses at The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and has performed in Alice Tully Hall. As a member of the Werner Chamber Quartet along with her three siblings, she has been enthusiastically received in concert halls at home and abroad, including Weill Recital Hall, the Music Guild Concert Series in Los Angeles, the Congrès de Luthiers in France, the Provincehuis in Groningen, Holland, the Peabody Essex Museum in Massachusetts, and at a command performance for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the Supreme Court. The Werner Chamber Quartet has continually shared its music in support of community organizations, such as Arts Without Boundaries, the Rescue Mission for the Homeless, the Wyoming Girls School, Shakespeare in the Park, and the Children’s Shelter. She is committed to encouraging opportunities for young musicians and fostering a dialogue about the importance of the arts in education and society. She has worked with many children in public and rural schools across the United States and in Europe. She has studied cello with Richard Aaron, Hans Jorgen Jensen, and Natasha Brofsky, and is a distinguished graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music piano program. Ms. Werner holds degrees from Yale and the University of Michigan. She is currently in her second year of the doctoral program at The Juilliard School.
