Celebrate the Jubilee of the NZCT Chamber Music Contest in 2015 Chamber music is an experience to be enjoyed with your friends and family!

Growing up in Invercargill, I fondly remember our family musical gatherings and being initiated into the wonderful world of chamber music by some passionate local musicians. From an early age I was invited to play string quartets and was inspired by amazing musicians visiting town as part of their Chamber Music New Zealand tour. Like tens of thousands of other Kiwis since 1965, I participated as a cellist in the ‘Westpac’ Contest during my teens and vividly recall these experiences in full stereo and vivid technicolour, while many of my subsequent professional engagements have receded into somewhat of an abstract blur. Undoubtedly the focal point of 2015 will be the Jubilee of the NZCT Chamber Music Contest. In June you can hear the District Rounds in your community and travel somewhere nearby to catch the new Regional Finals. Plan to travel to Wellington for the National Finals on the weekend of 1 and 2 August and join us for the celebrations surrounding the 50th anniversary. Our whole programme is brimming with great music; every performance is carefully crafted to celebrate the impact of the Contest on the lives of so many of us. Throughout our season we also showcase Douglas Lilburn’s ensemble music. He was born in Wanganui on 2 November 1915 and his musical legacy continues to inspire future generations. The Kaleidoscopes concert season is bookended by two international ensembles, the Brodsky Quartet (UK) and the Vienna Piano Trio. Our Contest Alumni feature prominently throughout the year: Michael Houstoun, Wilma Smith, John Psathas, NZTrio, John Chen and many others combine to offer a remarkable year of chamber music. As a team game, chamber music relies on all of us, artists and audiences, being together in the moment to experience something unique. On reflection, the opportunities that I enjoyed growing up in the Deep South set me off on a journey that continues to challenge and inspire me every day. Please join us in 2015; we’d really love to share this music and some magic moments with you. Euan Murdoch, CEO
