2016
A season of boldness and brilliance... Kia ora! It has been so exciting seeing our 2016 programme fall into place. I’ve been impatient for the moment when I could tell you all about a season that is classy, varied, deeply satisfying and fun. My highlights: »» Uri Caine – New York-based jazz artist famous for his creative engagement with classical repertoire. »» From hip to HIP (‘historically-informed performance’) with Les Talens Lyriques – they’re among the top league of Europe’s period-instrument ensembles. »» NZTrio and the New Zealand String Quartet making music with illustrious colleagues – NZTrio with clarinet superstar Julian Bliss and NZSQ with James Dunham (formerly of the Cleveland Quartet).
We will introduce you to new experiences, deepen your understanding and enjoyment of music and reacquaint you with friends.
»» The riches of the Mozart and complete Brahms String Quintets – all in one day. »» Programmes that combine classic violin and piano repertoire (Schubert, Mozart) with 20th century sparkle (Stravinsky, Ravel, Bartok). »» London Conchord Ensemble – a diverse and polished ensemble that has the flexibility to present an extraordinary range of chamber music treasures. That’s pretty much the whole season! Fair enough, this is a year of highlights – and I hope that you’ll take full advantage of it. We’ve worked hard to ensure that you can. Through our new pricing packages for younger audience members, discounts for seniors and our babysitting club, we want to give more and more music lovers the opportunity to enjoy live concerts from the world’s greatest chamber ensembles. URI CAINE & NEW ZEALAND STRING QUARTET (USA/NZ) TOURING 18–31 MARCH
Reimagining the classics Jazz meets the classics. Grammy-nominated pianist Uri Caine uses the classical idiom as a way to explore a whole world of music. Caine calls this “music about music” and describes the approach as a “springboard for improvisation”. In New Zealand he will be partnered in four concerts by the New Zealand String Quartet.
Programme One Uri Caine and New Zealand String Quartet Performed in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin Novel variations on classic themes: a great jazz artist reflects on the Allegretto con variazioni of Beethoven’s ‘Harp’ Quartet Op. 74 (to be played later in the season by the Ensō String Quartet) and the magnificent Goldberg Variations, described by Bach as “Diverse variations composed for music lovers to refresh their spirits”. Plus Jagged Edges and String Theories – Uri Caine originals for piano and string quartet.
Programme Two Uri Caine Performed in Hawke’s Bay, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Nelson, Queenstown, Invercargill Improvisations that bring fresh perspectives on works by composers as diverse as Scarlatti, Mozart, Mahler and Albeniz. (NZ/USA) TOURING 17 SEPTEMBER–1 OCTOBER
The Mozart and Brahms Quintet Experience The New Zealand String Quartet is joined by Grammy-nominated American violist James Dunham for this special tour highlighting masterpieces from Brahms and Mozart. Rattles and Rhythm
chambermusic.co.nz/matariki2016
Sometimes it’s just not that easy to organise childcare and make it to the concert hall. The Rattles and Rhythm concerts are designed to help. Parents and caregivers can enjoy a performance of the same quality you’d expect in the concert hall but baby can come along too – tears and all! The programme format is a little more relaxed and artists are comfortable to play through the cacophony of delightful baby babble that we all know and love. Enabling audience members to experience live music, interact with the musicians and appreciate chamber music in a welcoming environment. Since 2012 Chamber Music New Zealand has offered inclusive, accessible concerts with accompanying workshops in various centres around the country. It is an inspiring experience for audiences and artists alike where people with special needs can enjoy high quality chamber music.
Audio Description involves the accessibility of the visual images of the concert-going experience for people who are blind, have low vision, or who are otherwise visually impaired. It is a narration service (provided at no additional charge to the patron) that attempts to describe what the sighted person takes for granted. The touch tour prior to the performance is an opportunity to hear the instruments up close and meet the musicians who will be playing them.
»» Chamber Music New Zealand is committed to the inclusion and participation of all people. »» We understand that diversity, in all its forms, adds richness and value to everything we do. For more information about these concerts please visit chambermusic.co.nz/accessibility
In 2016, Les Talens Lyriques will offer audio described concerts and touch tours. See page 10 for details.
LET’S MAKE MUSIC! When a group of enthusiasts formed New Zealand’s first chamber music society in the final months of the Second World War, they had no idea that it would grow into an organisation bringing concerts to cities and towns the length and breadth of New Zealand, so many decades on. In 2016, audiences across New Zealand will experience performances by some of the best European and American musicians together with our best-loved New Zealand artists. School children will rehearse and perform together, experiencing the joy, nerves and exhilaration of being on a public stage. And many other members of the community will discover or re-discover the magic of live performance, in community centres, classrooms and concert halls. It is your generous support that makes these moments a reality. Chamber Music New Zealand is a not-for-profit charity, and we rely on your support. Please consider making a donation with your 2016 subscription or contact us to find out other ways you can help: Kirsten Mason Development Manager Phone: (04) 802 0755 Email: kirsten@chambermusic.co.nz Visit: chambermusic.co.nz/support-us
