What is a Chamber of Commerce? A Chamber of Commerce is a voluntary partnership of business and professional people working together to build a healthy economy and to improve the quality of life in the community. The Mecosta County Chamber’s strength lies in attracting the greatest number of firms into membership, to create a pool of resources from which it can draw ideas, talents, energies, and finances. These resources are combined to solve problems in Mecosta County and beyond. Membership to the Mecosta County Area Chamber of Commerce enables members of the business and professional community to accomplish more collectively than one business could do individually. Members also have a voice in current civic, local, and state matters. The Mecosta County Chamber hosts a variety of events throughout the year. The monthly events consist of both networking events, such as business after-hours and Rise and Shine mixers, and business workshops which include lunch and learn sessions. Some of the Chamber’s annual events include: the Community and Family Expo, the Pioneer Chamber Golf Open, the Taste of Mecosta County, the Big Bad Wolf and Leadership Mecosta 5k, the Labor Day Arts and Crafts Show, Bulldog Bonanza (a business expo at Ferris State University), a 5K Glow Run, the Dam Festival, and a community Holiday Gala. The Mecosta County Area Chamber of Commerce also offers a Leadership Mecosta program. Stay updated with MCACC and enjoy access to useful articles and more!

“Back in 2012 we started considering expanding our Sears Hometown store to a larger format of Sears Appliance & Hardware Store. We contacted our bank, Lake Osceola State Bank, who works with the Small Business Administration SBA, about a business loan; they put us in touch with the Small Business Development Center, SBCD. They were extremely helpful, we worked with Marie Elliott, who had tons of experience and knowledge. We had no idea that this support was available to us. She helped me work through projections and budgets, research competition and do market analysis and just gave us an overall sense that we were doing the right thing. This benefit is available to all Chamber members at no cost; whether you are thinking of expanding or starting a new business I would recommend it to anyone.” Tammy Weaver Sears Appliance and Hardware

“I used the SBDC to help me form the financial part of my business plan. When I was starting my new business I didn’t have any numbers from previous years, because it was a brand new business. The SBDC was able to provide financial census data that helped me draw up an educated business plan, and made it not so intimidating. The census numbers were very helpful because this offered me new information that I couldn’t have found on my own, or know how to decipher it. The SBCD were very helpful and actually cared about their clients. They would email and call occasionally to check on the progress of my business development, and they always encouraged me to ask more questions. I would highly recommend the SBCD if you are starting a business from the ground, up.” Clinton Zimmerman N.D., C.T.N, L.M.T. Owner of Red Fox Market LLC.

Manufacturing Day WHAT IS MANUFACTURING DAY? Michigan has been leading the nation in manufacturing job growth since 2009. However, with new growth comes new challenges as local manufacturers struggle to find talented people to fill those positions. In response to this trend, The Mecosta County Area Chamber of Commerce is partnering with local manufacturing businesses in our area, as well as local school districts, the Michigan Manufacturers’ Association and Michigan Works! West Central to help motivate and inspire young people in the area to pursue a career in modern-day manufacturing. MCACC is working to organize a Manufacturing Day, or MFG Day, event here in Mecosta County. MFG DAY addresses common misperceptions about manufacturing

by giving manufacturers an opportunity to open their doors and show, in a coordinated effort, what manufacturing is — and what it isn’t. By working together during and after MFG DAY, manufacturers will begin to address the skilled labor shortage they face, connect with future generations, take charge of the public image of manufacturing,

and ensure the ongoing prosperity of the whole industry. According to the MFG Day website, “MFG DAY is designed to amplify the voice of individual manufacturers and coordinate a collective chorus of manufacturers with common concerns and challenges. The rallying point for a growing mass movement, MFG DAY empowers manufacturers to come together to address their collective challenges so they can help their communities and future generations thrive.” “Manufacturing Day is all about showing the community that this industry provides sustainable, well-paid jobs, with limitless opportunities for advancement,” said Manufacturing Institute Executive Director Jennifer McNelly.

One of MCACC’s key roles in the community is to make sure that the area has the type of climate that allows for job, wage and economic growth. Without qualified people in these manufacturing positions, growth will remain stagnant, which is why MCACC wants to invigorate the manufacturing climate here in Mecosta County, keeping residents and their families in the area. The results of this national campaign have shown an increase in the positive perception of manufacturing as a viable career: • Eighty-four percent of students and 90 percent of educators were more convinced that manufacturing provides careers that are both interesting and rewarding. • Sixty-four percent of students were more motivated to pursue a manufacturing career. • Eighty-eight percent of students and 90 percent of teachers viewed Manufacturing Day events as interesting and engaging. • Eighty-nine percent of manufacturers that hosted Manufacturing Day events saw value in participating, and 86 percent are likely to host an event again in the future.

The Mecosta County event will feature local manufacturing businesses such as Ice Mountain, Simonds, Bandit Industries, and Haworth. Representatives from these companies, as well as from the Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School District, the Michigan Manufacturers’ Association and Michigan Works! West Central are collaborating to create a program focused on changing the perception of what manufacturing today really is, in hopes of inspiring the next generation of manufacturers to consider the opportunities that await them in the industry. mecostacounty.com

PROMOTIONS COMMITTEE The job of the Promotions Committee is to promote the Chamber as the epicenter of commerce, culture, and community life for residents and visitors alike. This committee works by understanding the changing market, identifying assets, including people, programs, events, heritage, and institutions, defining the Chamber’s unique position in Mecosta County, creating new image campaigns, expressing ideas clearly with an open mind to learn from others, looking at the big picture, understanding the needs of our members, and letting people know about all of our accomplishments. Trail Town

Trail Town Year-round, recreationalists from far and wide experience the woods and waters of Mecosta County, take pictures (oftentimes sharing via social media), spend money, and have a great impact on our local economy. Visitors, residents (new and seasoned), students, business owners, and organizations benefit from a strong relationship between these recreational trail ways and adjacent communities. With this relationship in mind, The Mecosta County Area Chamber of Commerce, together with The City of Big Rapids, Mecosta County Parks Department, The Big Rapids Jaycees and several members of the community have banded together to form the

Mecosta County Trail Alliance. Following the “trail town” model of the Land Information Access Association (LIAA.org), the MCTA’s goal is to develop a master plan to leverage benefits of outdoor recreation in communities along these local trail systems, and to aid local communities in obtaining a “Pure Michigan Trail Town” designation. To qualify, a trail must be a “model trail for its designated uses and through its naming, contribute to a statewide trail network that promotes healthy lifestyles, economic development, recreation, and conservation of Michigan’s natural and cultural resources.” Once designated as a Pure Michigan Trail Town, the area can utilize all of the promotion that the Pure Michigan branding

mecostacounty.com

brings with it. The hope is to increase trail tourism in our area, and in turn, increase outdoor recreation revenue in our communities. Mecosta County has outdoor recreational opportunities for paddlers, cyclists, birdwatchers, boaters, hikers, walkers, educators, hunters, anglers, equestrians, snowmobilers, cross-country skiers, and more. Whatever your interests in trails, recreational activities, and communities along the trail systems, you are encouraged to take part in this project. If you would like to join the committee or offer input in the process, please contact the Mecosta County Area Chamber of Commerce at 231-796-7649.

Why Be a Chamber Member? Some business owners might say their schedule is demanding enough at the moment, and the thought of adding one more activity to their busy calendar is unbearable. So why should they try to cram time into their already hectic schedules to join and actively participate in their local chamber of commerce?

its image and reputation in the community, says Dr. Craig Shoemaker, a marketing professor and the chair of the marketing department at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. He says people like doing business with companies they like and trust, but that trust must be earned. “The more a firm is networked with its community, the quicker and easier it is to establish a trust bond with customers,” says Dr. Shoemaker.

Because membership in the local chamber offers numerous benefits and keeps business owners on top of important, ever-changing issues and trends within their community and local marketplace. Not only are that, but research points out that consumers more likely to do business with a company if it’s a member of their local chamber of commerce.

Prior to his time at St. Ambrose, Dr. Shoemaker owned and operated a marketing services business in Phoenix, Arizona, which was a member of the local chamber of commerce. He says chamber membership was very beneficial to him and his marketing business.

According a research study by The Shapiro Group, Inc. and Market Street Services, when consumers know that a small business is a member of their local chamber of commerce, they are 44 percent more likely to think favorably of it and 63 percent more likely to purchase goods or services from the company in the future. If you still don’t think you have time to join and participate in your local chamber of commerce, consider the following: • Most consumers (59%) think that being active in the local chamber of commerce is an effective business strategy overall. It’s 29% more effective, however, for communicating to consumers that a company uses good business practices and 26 percent more effective for communicating that a business is reputable. • If a company shows that it’s highly involved in its local chamber (e.g., sits on the chamber board), consumers are 12 percent more likely to think that its products stack up better against its competition. • When a consumer thinks that a company’s products stack up better against the competition because the company is highly involved in its local chamber of commerce, it is because he or she infers that the company is trustworthy, involved in the community and is an industry leader. • When consumers know that a restaurant franchise is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 40 percent more likely to eat at the franchise in the next few months. • When consumers know that an insurance company is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 43 percent more likely to consider buying insurance from it.

“The chamber was a great place to network and meet people who shared a common interest in serving their community and their customers,” he says.

How does all that sound? If your business is a restaurant or an insurance company, for example, isn’t it fantastic to hear the news that consumers are more likely to choose your business over a competing, nonmember business because you’re a member of your local chamber of commerce? Are you convinced yet that you should join your local chamber if you aren’t a member already? If not, read this top 10 list of reasons why you should join your local chamber of commerce supplied by 10 local chambers across the United States. 1. Membership brings credibility to your business. 2. Increase your visibility in the community. 3. Create networking opportunities. 4. Gain a voice in government. 5. Make business contacts. 6. Receive chamber newsletters. 7. Acquire customer referrals. 8. Attend Chamber events and programs. 9. Receive promotion and publicity. 10. Access members-only discounts.

mecostacounty.com

Small businesses represent the largest segment by number of most local chamber membership rolls. Results in the research study by The Shapiro Group, Inc. and Market Street indicate the impact of local chamber membership on small businesses is very powerful. If a consumer knows a small business is a member of its local chamber, the business enjoys a 44 percent increase in its consumer favorability rating, a 51 percent increase in consumer awareness, a 57 percent increase in its local reputation and a 63 percent increase in the likelihood that consumers will patronize the business in the future.

Ready to join your local chamber, if you aren’t already? Keep in mind, however, that you can’t just be a member of the local chamber to reap the benefits of chamber membership. Paying your annual dues just isn’t enough. You must also make an investment of time and effort in chamber activities and become involved. Simply put, what you get out of chamber membership is directly relative to what you put in. “If a firm is to gain maximum value from membership, it must be an active participant in chamber-sponsored events,” Dr. Shoemaker says. “Chambers plan events so that its members benefit. Only by participation, can a firm get maximum benefit.”We give you the tools to help your business!

Our New Welcome Center You have probably heard by now that the Mecosta County CVB and the Mecosta County Area Chamber of Commerce have purchased the property located at 127 South State St. Big Rapids. The planning process of demolishing the current structure and constructing the new building is well underway. Soon there will be a vibrant new Welcome Center and office space for the two organizations in this very busy downtown area of Big Rapids. While the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Welcome Center will include displays of printed literature, electronic resources, vending

machines along with public restrooms and seating for guests and visitors to relax, the Chamber of Commerce offices will also be located in the space and will include a Business Resource Center to provide information and resources to current and future business owners in Mecosta County. Jennifer Heinzman, Executive Director of the Mecosta County Chamber of Commerce stated, “Although the current building has served us well for many years, it is no longer serving the needs of the community and is not appealing to visitors, potential developers or businesses owners that may be

looking to relocate to our area”. She said “it is beneficial for everyone if we put our best foot forward”. As this exciting project moves forward the Mecosta County CVB and Mecosta County Chamber will continue with updates on the progress of the building in addition to a rendering of the building itself in the near future. For more information regarding this exciting project contact Connie Koepke with the Mecosta County CVB at 231.796.7640 or Jennifer Heinzman with the Mecosta County Area Chamber of Commerce at 231.796.7649.
