WHAT NO ONE TELLS YOU ABOUT THE STRENGTH OF CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE CALL US AT: 010 040 8328 Visit us at: www.chamberlink.co.za

Very little is simple about operating a business in South Africa. Challenges are myriad and make for an environment where it is necessary to forge strong bonds between businesses, and between business and government. This is the great strength of chambers of commerce. They are a tried and tested way for businesses to create strong channels of communication within the local business sphere and between local business interests and government bodies. Chambers of Commerce give businesses a voice that can be heard outside the business sphere. Power supply, water supply, taxes, tariffs and fuel costs, civil infrastructure, education, and safety are all the in the scope of government, whether on a local, provincial or national level. As all these factors directly affect the productivity of businesses, their long-term viability, and their profits, it is important that businesses are able to make their voices heard. Business Chambers of Commerce are one of the best ways to achieve this visibility. Government officials attend Chamber of Commerce meetings and summits, making membership an excellent way to meet and be heard by regional authorities. Also, Chambers of Commerce set up committees and working groups to advocate for the interests of their members to government and civil bodies. This is especially important on a local level, when every decision — from the placement of public transport routes, to zoning matters and crime-control measures — directly affects businesses in the area. Chambers of Commerce support business success through offering business-oriented services such as marketing and training services. Stronger businesses mean more successful communities and countries: a healthy local, regional and national economy makes for a wealthier region with greater opportunities. In tough economic times, rates of business failure are high — but with proper support, such as that offered by a Chamber of Commerce, they don’t have to be. For starters, business Chambers of Commerce allow their members to become more visible and more credible simply by joining and attending planned events. These events are an excellent way to get to know and perhaps form partnerships with other businesses in the same area or field of industry, as well as develop a public profile as an engaged member of the local community. Many Chambers of Commerce offer their members specialised business-support services aimed at upskilling staff of all levels, including executives, and increasing business success. These can include BBBEE assistance, marketing advice and inbound marketing services, labour consultancy, company registration, staff skills development, and occupational health and safety training, among others. Because of this, Chambers of Commerce can drive political and social change in their area. Strong, active business Chambers of Commerce can do a lot for the regions they represent — and in return, those can evolve into attractive, productive regions. It’s a win-win situation for both. SUMMARY OF TAURUS PROJECTS

16

Project Logistics is the import and export of different types of cargo e.g., general, hazardous including chemicals and out of gauge equipment. These consignments can be for any of these industries e.g., Oil and Gas, Mining, Sustainable Energy Infrastructures or plant equipment. As every project is unique and every site different the benefit of Supply Chain Optimisation and fine-tuning has not occurred as yet. It requires planning to overcome any obstacle without complication.

"Success depends on planning and execution"

Taurus Projects

17

CHARACTERISTICS OF PROJECT LOGISTICS Project logistics is already introduced in the feasibility study stage of any project. Accessibility to the destination site, in terms of transport routes, rail carrying capacities, bridge width, height and stability, can all dictate the design approach by engineers or logistics specialists. In a situation where very long lead-items apply, feasibility studies are in order before completion of the final design to ensure any construction or alterations are included. It is this early involvement, in any project, which guides us to use the description ‘project logistics’.

Characteristics of

Project Supply Chain Logistics THE FOLLOWING ELEMENTS DIFFERENTIATE PROJECT SUPPLY CHAIN FROM SUPPLY CHAIN FOR MANUFACTURING AND RETAILING:

Convergency: All materials converge on the construction site where the plant/facility is assembled from incoming materials. The construction effort is directed to a single product, namely the processing facility; Temporary: Apart from rare exceptions, a Project Supply Chain is temporary, producing one-off construction projects through repeated re-configuration of project contractors and suppliers; and Made-to-order: Projects require made-to-order Supply Chain, as with every project creating a new plant/facility. Due to little repetition, the benefit of fine-tuning is limited with minor exceptions. Planning, procuring, implementing, coordinating and controlling the efficient flow of goods, storing of goods, service and stream of information between the origin point and destination point to fulfill the customer expectations. An example is delivering materials to a construction site or parts for a manufacturing plant. Additionally, evaluating the logistical procurement, assessing the risk and level of supply at the different stages of the process, is required to make sure the Competition Law and Governmental Regulations are met. Logisticians analyze, visualize and optimize the complexity of logistical puzzles to reduce stress for you, our customer.

Taurus Projects

18

EXECUTION The logistician needs to understand the scope of the work, the schedule and the contract. For flawless execution, we require excellent procurement, scheduling, quality, and resource management. Some projects required superior planning, managing a fixed scope over a long time, excellent execution, careful management of fixed resources, precise timing, and continual risk assessment. Project logistics execution is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to a broad range of activities in order to meet the requirements of a particular project. There must be a clear understanding of the progress to date, the deliverables, and any problems that have or will arrived with mitigations. At implementation stage, it is important to have a process in place for formal Change Orders, to process approved changes to the plan/ scope or schedule. In reality you can plan, act, review, and then re-plan and re-act because it is inevitable that not everything will go according to plan.

Taurus Projects

19

LOGISTICS BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION Defined as recommended and/or implementation services that improve a company’s internal operations and performance in the value chain. Effective implementation of changes to target operation models and functional business processes e.g. governance, management systems (roles and responsibility) and elements part of the value chain. The benefits of improvement and implementation are controlling costs, utilizing productivity capacity, improved quality, innovation and collaboration.

LOGISTICS RISK MANAGEMENT What is logistics risk management? By seeing the most common problems in logistics and supply chain you have found the exact purpose of risk management. The risk management process identifies your company’s business risks and develops the most adequate mitigation strategy to manage each one. Internal risks to consider in your logistics process is Governance, Ethics (anti-bribery), and Reputational Risk

CONCLUSION In summary Taurus Projects and Logistics Specialists (Pty) Ltd provides a professional consultancy and management service within the project logistics discipline. What is constructive dismissal Constructive dismissal referrals could land you in hot water at the CCMA if you don't have sufficient evidence to prove that you addressed internal problems fairly. Constructive dismissal is a term that can make employers nervous. Also referred to as forced resignation, it is action taken by an employee when their work conditions become unbearable, and they see no other option other than to resign. Employees claiming constructive dismissal refer their case to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), where they seek an award of compensation from their former employer. All claims are carefully investigated, as the CCMA acts fairly to protect the rights of both employees and employers. As long as the employer has been reasonable and responsible, they should have nothing to worry about. In a case of constructive dismissal, it is up to the employee to prove that conditions at the place of employment were intolerable due to the actions (or lack thereof) of the employer. The employee has to provide supporting evidence at the CCMA. An inability to do so results in the case being dismissed. To protect themselves, it is recommended that employers keep evidence of their own. For example, it is advisable to ensure that complaints, records of remedial action taken, minutes of meetings where issues raised by employees were discussed, letters of resignation, and so on are kept. It is unfortunate that some employees try to take advantage of constructive dismissal by â gamingâ the system. There are cases where dissatisfied workers resign and then make a claim for constructive dismissal, even though the resignation was in no way forced. As a result, it is important for employers to be aware of the legitimate grounds for constructive dismissal.

Examples of this include failure to pay an employee's salary (where the employer can be shown to be at fault), making unlawful deductions, assaulting employees or otherwise abusing them that is including verbally. Forcing employees to accept transfers from other departments or branches, unreasonable demoting employees and offering an inferior position with the threat of dismissal if they do not accept it. Threats of dismissing employees if they do not comply with demands that can be shown to be unreasonable, sexual harassment of employees. Further examples include offering employees retrenchment packages as an alternative to a dismissal, or accusing an employee of misconduct but denying them the opportunity to challenge the accusations in a formal disciplinary enquiry. Employers can take steps to protect themselves from allegations of the above conduct by keeping records of all wages, salaries and deductions, as well as records of employee misconduct and disciplinary hearings, and documenting all transfers and requests in writing. For an employee to succeed in a claim of constructive dismissal, they also need to be able to show that they exhausted all possible internal procedures to try and resolve the issues they faced, for example by approaching senior management and formally lodging a grievance. Any such action needs to be recorded by the employer, and they should be able to show that they responded to it in a reasonable and fair manner. At the East Rand Chamber of Commerce and Industry, we provide assistance which will ensure that your internal processes are accurately implemented to protect you from the employer against these allegations. We chair internal grievance inquiries and offer CCMA representation should an employee refer a case for constructive dismissal. Visit www.chamlabour.co.za for any queries.

JULY 2022

THE IMPORTANCE OF DOING A BBBEE COST ANALYSIS BEFORE EMBARKING ON A CERTIFICATE

In business today it is crucial to get the most out of every idea, option and investment. Getting the most out of an investment in particular is what is predominantly emphasized by businesses. This makes a lot of sense, investing in something should ultimately translate into a return on investment. Like most things associated with business and in the business field, it is very important to get a BBBEE cost analysis done before deciding to embark on the journey of getting B-BBEE certification. A cost analysis is generally used to determine the true costs of processes or programs (products and or services both tangible and intangible). Blogging Your Best Marketing Asset These days everyone and everything has a blog – it’s an integral part of an online presence. Blogs can be valuable marketing assets for businesses large and small – they are easy to create and maintain, and offer all sorts of benefits. In this article, we take a look at what blogging can do for you, and how you can do blogging, in more detail. Blogging has evolved from its rudimentary beginnings (when the internet was still in its infancy) as a sort of online journal to become a ubiquitous platform that provides a voice for not only writers but companies, organizations, products and even cute animals. As a marketing tool, blogging can be one of your greatest assets. For a start, blogs are great for the SEO of your website. They ensure fresh, regularly updated content – which Google and other search engines love. Each blog can also give you an extra indexed page on your site, increasing your chances of ranking in searches. Within the blogs there are opportunities to highlight keywords, further bolstering your SEO strategy. At the end of the day, it is about drawing more traffic to your website, the underlying aim of any inbound marketing tactics. Visitors will land on your site via your blogs – especially if the content is informative and relevant. While you can, of course, promote your services and products in a hard-sell, direct manner on your blog, many companies find it more effective to take a softer, more indirect approach. This means that they publish blogs which meet visitors’ information needs and then work to convert those visitors into leads by offering added extras like free eBooks or other perks. From there, more direct marketing can take place. We often encounter the terms top, middle and bottom of funnel – these refer to the level of “sell” a blog or other text is doing, with the top being the broadest and most general. You can think of it as thought leader stuff; material that engages readers and piques their interest – getting them thinking about the services or goods on offer in a roundabout fashion. Having a blog can lend your company credibility, positioning you as a source of authority in your field. If it is a really good blog, you might even get media practitioners or people looking for experts approaching you for comment and advice; this can mean publicity gains. Another way in which blogging can be an asset for your business is through the generation of content for your social media platforms – every time you post a new blog, you can spread the word through Facebook, Twitter and so on. These posts have a lot more substance and tend to get better reach and interaction than generic posts that don’t provide a strong link to your website. Blogging can be done in-house or easily outsourced – many companies offer professional services as part of a marketing package. It tends to be affordable and is a worthwhile investment in your business. The East Rand Chamber of Commerce can help with your blogging aims – contact www.hublink.co.za to find out more.
