Mayor Warren Declares State of Emergency to Combat Violence in Rochester A Joint Statement from Mayor Lovely A. Warren & City Council Vice President and Public Safety, Recreation and Human Services Chair Willie J. Lightfoot Regarding the Proclamation of a State of Emergency in the City of Rochester to address Ongoing Violence in our Community:

"Our Rochester Police Department has been working with its local, state and federal law enforcement partners to expand their efforts to target those individuals committing violence in our city. We have also been working with the City law department to determine what emergency powers we can exercise. Today, Mayor Warren is declaring a local state of emergency to ensure additional resources are brought to bear with one clear goal: removing violent offenders from our neighborhoods.

These individuals have already committed crimes, are wanted for additional crimes and are most likely to be perpetrating the violence we’re seeing today. We are grateful to Governor Hochul for agreeing to provide additional State Troopers to Rochester to actively expand this effort. This builds upon the work led by the U.S. Marshalls, RPD and the Monroe County Sheriff that began this summer. In addition, we have asked our State and County partners for further resources to provide more mental health and violence disruption services.

We also need our residents to step up and protect their neighborhoods as well. If you see something, say something, call 911 and report it. None of us can tolerate what is happening. The costs are, and have been, too great.

Lastly, as people of faith, we call upon God to watch over Rochester, bring peace to its people and give us all the strength to do what is necessary. We also pray for all those we have lost and their families. May God provide them with solace and grace."

Pastor Randolph Geeter, First Lady Charmaine Geeter and Lamb of Life Church of God in Christ along with community members and representatives from local markets and organizations, kicked off the school year in a back-to-school community event outside of Lamb of Life Church of God in Christ.

Aside from receiving free school supplies children also enjoyed live music performances, food box giveaways, and free haircuts and hairstyles for more than 300 students by Cut Pros Barbershop.

The event marked the second prominent act by Lamb of Life Church of God in Christ, which moved into the neighborhood earlier this year but had not opened to the public for a religious service due to the COVID-19 Pandemic until September 5.

On that day the church hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony and church dedication for its grand opening with Mayor Lovely Warren and Bishop Rothel Highsmith of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Mayor Warren Names DRHS Building to Honor City Council President Loretta C. Scott Mayor Lovely A. Warren conducted a ribbon cutting and unveiling ceremony recently renaming the City’s Department of Recreation and Human Services (DRHS) administrative office building at 55-57 St. Paul St. downtown as the Honorable Loretta C. Scott Center for Human Services in honor of the City Council President.

“President Scott is an unwavering champion for the children and families of Rochester,” said Mayor Warren. “This is a fitting monument to honor her indelible legacy of leadership, commitment and work to improve our community. She is a respected leader, but first and foremost, she is a committed servant, who has guided transformative change from City Hall to the community, especially in the areas of criminal justice, racial equity, employment and education.”

Prior to her career in elected office, President Scott served the public as a City employee for close to three decades, first in the Office of City Manager to administer a federally funded workforce development program; and then in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Human Services. From there, President Scott held positions of progressive responsibility, holding the title of Commissioner for the final 13 years of her service. Her experience in helping disadvantaged residents find and keep employment would become the origin or her signature phrase, “It’s about jobs.”

The building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was constructed in 1916 and 1917.

Activists Rally for Human Rights at Erie County Holding Center Call on County Legislature to Deny Budget to Sheriff’s Office Until Recent Issue is Resolved

M

Garcia Wins Sheriff's Race. Beaty Bows Out. t press time we learned that Republican John Garcia A has been declared the winner in the hotly contested race for Sheriff, dashing the hopes of Democratic candidate Kim-

berly Beaty who was poised to make history as the first Black and first woman Sheriff of Erie county.

The race went down to the wire. Too close to call on election night, Beaty and her supporters kept hope alive as thousands of absentee ballots were counted. And although she won over half of them, she was still unable to overcome her opponent and fell short by about 3,000 votes.

Beaty, by far the most qualified candidate in the race, ran well, and under normal circumstances, would have had an excellent chance of winning. But she faced obstacles from day one - from being personally discouraged not to enter the race by the party, to a lack of party unity.

“I ran as a Democrat, and I am proud to be a Democrat.

It is a shame that some forget their party and the folks in the community that really need them and have supported them,” she said in a written statement. Clearly feeling “some kind of way” she continued, "Their constituents or the greater good be damned, it all goes by the wayside for self-preservation, and that’s unfortunate.”

Save Our Children Town Hall Meeting Regarding Missing Children

yles Carter, the articulate young activist and former candidate for Erie County Sheriff, called a press conference on Sunday at the Erie County Holding Center to denounce the latest example of human rights violations at the facility : no hot water for two years in many of the dorms and at least since January for those housed in Echo Dorm.

After receiving a phone call from a disabled inmate on October 7, Carter immediately notified general management and reached out to the correctional oversight committee as well as the Muslim Chaplain at the Holding Center.

“Within an hour I received response that they were aware of Myles Carter the outage and that they were transporting prisoners to unaffected areas to shower.”

Then on October I6th he received a letter complaining that Echo Dorm had not had hot water since January.

“The letter was signed by 10 prisoners and made reference to multiple complaints that have been filed and closed.”

The letter was forwarded to the Erie County Jail oversight committee in which a complaint was filed with the NYS Commission of Corrections on October 25, 2021.

Based on research conducted by oversight committee they concluded lack of hot water was due to one failing boiler, further stating that the responsibility of the boiler falls under division of buildings and grounds.

“The Sheriff’s department has $126 million budget for 2021 and requesting a $16.6 million increase for 2022 - that’s roughly a 13% increase with no plans to restore the human rights that are being violated here at the holding center,” said Carter.

“Our demand is that the Erie county legislature act immediately and deny the budget for 2022 until a plan and action is put forward to restore the hot water and that a tangible work around is put in place with direct supervision by the oversight committee until the hot water is restored. And we need oversight of that work thru the Erie County oversight committee for the jails.”

“I just don’t think it’s their priority to make sure these inmates have basic needs,” charged Shaimaa Aakil who shared her own personal experience at the Holding Center as a teen. “ They’re simply not prioritizing the safety of the inmates. We’ve seen that in the last 32 deaths” she continued, referencing the number of deaths which have occurred under Sheriff Timothy Howard’s tenure. “It’s consistent, constant behavior of this toxic culture of prioritizing their own … over the lives of these residents of our city who are innocent until proven guilty.”

“Is it this hard to get them to fix a boiler?”

-Addressing LawmakersMyles and several others addressed legislative hearing on the county budget on Monday where they made their demands plain.

“The sheriff is an executive position and really the only way you can provide any type of checks and balance on the sheriff is through the budgeting process. That’s the only power that the legislators and county executive have to provide any kind of check or balance."

It all comes down to, he said, an “issue of mismanagement and a waste of resources.”

Common Council Passes Clean Slate Resolution Buffalo Becomes The First City In Western New York To Pass A Resolution Urging The State Legislature To Enact Clean Slate The Buffalo Common Council approved a resolution recently in support of the Clean Slate Act urging the New York State Legislature to end perpetual punishment for millions of New Yorkers with conviction records. Over 400,000 people are arrested on criminal charges in New York each year, with 2.3 million across the state living with a conviction history. New York State incarcerates people at a higher rate than the United Kingdom, Canada, and France combined creating barriers to jobs, housing, education, and full participation in the very life of this state..University District Council Member Rasheed N.C. Wyatt, filed the resolution. Assemblymember Rivera will co-sponsor the essential Clean Slate legislation.

The Six Triple Eight

T

he Women’s Army Corps 6888 Central Postal Directory Battalion made history during World War II after more than 800 Black women took on the task of sorting through millions of pieces unattended mail for American soldiers, according to the U.S. Army Center of Military History.

The women tackled the parcels and letters when they arrived in England in February 1945. They later sailed to France where they continued sorting through the piles of mail.

More than 70 years after a historic all-Black women’s battalion disbanded with no recognition, several years ago the unit got its due thanks to a parade celebration and a new documentary.

In June 1945, the Six Triple Eight continued their work clearing mail in France with French civilians and German POWs working by their side.

At the end of WWII, the unit’s commander, Major Charity Edna Adams, was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, the Milwaukee Courier reported. It made her making her that highest ranking African-American female in the Army.

By early 1946, the battalion had returned home to the U.S. but there was no fanfare celebrating their contributions. No parade, no formal ceremony or any kind of official recognition was given until 2014, thanks to Democratic Winsconsin congresswoman Gwen Moore.

16th Annual FREE Clothing and Thanksgiving Dinner Giveaway for the Community

n celebration of the anticipated holiday season, on Saturday, November 20th from 12-5p.m. Soul Saving Revival Center (SSRC) and the Esther House invite you to their 16th Annual Free Community Clothing Giveaway and Thanksgiving Dinner, while supplies last.

“I started this initiative through Ester House because I wanted to help combat the residents in the community who are disenfranchised socially and economically, and also show kindness and support,” said Elder Ernestine Grooms of SSRC The annual Clothing and Thanksgiving Dinner giveaway offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities for SSRC to work alongside the community and other partners to help improve the City of Buffalo and neighborhoods.

“ANYONE who walks through our doors are welcome; each year we have been blessed to serve over 500 residents with a hot meal and desert,” said Senior Pastor of SSRC, Robert L. A. Robinson Jr.

Attendees are also allowed to pick out one (1) bag of clothing, while supplies last from our Passionate Vision Ministry led by SSRC member Ravalla Gaines and access vendors providing services. “We are sincere and take pride in our contribution to society. The $1 Trillion Infrastructure Bill And Why Apprentiships Are So Important to African Americans

S

everal months ago there was talk about the “possibilities and likability’s” of the infrastructure bill being passed.

Earlier this week President Biden signed the $1 trillion bill into law to rebuild communities across America. Administration officials say hundreds of billions of dollars will help reverse long-running racial disparities in how the government builds, repairs and locates a wide range of physical infrastructure. That includes $20 billion to “reconnect” communities of color to economic opportunity, as concerns over racial inequality are an animating force of the infrastructure push.

The question now becomes, what position are we in, as African Americans, to receive the money that has been placed on the table?

It’s national Apprenticeship week, and we are promoting apprentice programs especially with the recent infrastructure signing. So I would like to encourage everyone who is not a skilled trades worker to consider an apprentice program.

ICE AT CANALSIDE OPENS NOVEMBER 26!

Special Visit from Santa from 5-9 PM and Fireworks show at 7:15 The Ice at Canalside is returning for another season of family fun.

Be Our Guest, Ltd. announced the rink will open at 3 PM on Friday, November 26. Activities include skating, curling, ice bikes and ice bumper cars, in addition to the popular igloo rentals.A season opening party will take place from 5-10 PM. There will be a DJ, and special visit from Santa from 5-9 PM and a fireworks show at 7:15 PM. The rink will be open through February 2022.

A new menu will debut this season at the Nosh and Nibble Snack Shack. The Low Bridge Cafe will be open for skaters to warm up and grab a bite inside the Explore and More Children's Museum.

Niagara Falls Housing Authority will host the vaccination clinic on Thursday, November 18 from 1 pm to 6 pm at the Doris W. Jones Family Resource Building (3001 9th S., Niagara Falls) and the Niagara Falls City School District will host a clinic on Saturday, November 20 from 11 am to 2pm at Harry F. Abate Elementary (1625 Lockport St. Niagara Falls).

At this time, Pfizer BioBTech COVID-19 vaccination shots will be available for children aged 5-11, as well as booster vaccines.

Concert Review

War Remains an Exemplar of Musical, Cultural and Racial Unity

I

Hang on baby brother/Oh, they call it law and order.” lyrics from War’s 1973 song “Me and Baby Brother” t’s been nearly a half century since War committed that song to wax, yet in the era of George Floyd and too many others resting in power way before their time, it remains a pertinent and stinging indictment of police brutality.

In fact, in this battered and fractured world (which is still a ghetto for too many) War’s vigorous fusion of funk, R&B, Latin, reggae and rock which transformed racial and cultural boundaries with its multi-racial line-up seems needed now more than ever.

And while keyboardist/lead vocalist Lonnie Jordan is the only remaining member, the current aggregate of musicians touring and recording under the War banner proved a potent musical force at Seneca Niagara’s Bears Den, this past Friday.

The two hour set opened with the aforementioned “Me and Baby Brother” followed by two of the band’s undisputed signatures : “The Cisco Kid” and “Slippin’ Into Darkness,” which were performed with a funky aplomb that got the crowd chanting along with their infectious choruses.

Drummer Sal Rodriguez capably handled lead vocals on the heart rending ballad “So” while Jordan (who turns 73 on November 21) delivered a tasteful and passionate vocal rendering of “Deliver The Word, ” before the charming reggae tinged plea of “Why Can’t We Be Friends” (with each of the seven members taking turns on vocals) and the now iconic “Low Rider” appeared to close out the show.

But there was more. The encore started with a dedication to recently deceased original War bassist B.B. Dickerson before “The World Is a Ghetto,” which endures as one of the most haunting and poignant narratives of socially conscious soul. The politically charged “Get Down” (from the band’s 1971 breakthrough “All Day Music”) was the most intense number of the concert with tight interplay among each member and a searing guitar solo courtesy of Buffalo’s own Stuart Ziff before a lively “Gypsy Man” took the crowd home.

Through 50 years of line up changes, deaths and shifting musical and social climates, War remains an exemplar of musical, cultural and racial unity.

n Wednesday November 24 at 6 p.m. Buffalo’s “Athletic Greats” Inner City Sports Program will host its annual gathering thanks to the diligence and dedication of Richard“The Lionhearted” Clark. He was later joined by LeRoi C. Johnson, Zellie Dow, Lum Smith and Gilbert Hargrave.

This year the Thanksgiving Eve event will take place at The Rose, 199 Scott Street (at lower Michigan Avenue). Doors open at 6 p.m. The public is invited. As in years past, one of the highlights has been the tribute to those “greats” who have made their transition; tremendous athletes like Zellie Dow, Fred Foster, Al Brown, and Hank Sevillian.

Tenants Speak Out Against Deplorable Living Conditions

A

s winter sets in, tenants and PUSH Buffalo are gathered at 416 Wohlers, a four unit complex owned by Honest Property Management and Multi Services Inc., to call on the management company and the Landlord, Roksana Priven, to address the deplorable conditions and to call attention to the ways in which landlords are taking advantage of the critically important public dollars being distributed via the Emergency Rental Assistance Program to help cover rent during the pandemic. The fully occupied four-unit house is likely uninhabitable due to mold, heat and water hook ups, a lack of smoke detectors, broken windows in each unit and an attic apartment that likely does not meet New York legal requirements for a habitable dwelling. Several families with children under the age of six live in these dangerous conditions.

One tenant has been without heat or hot water for the past six days. She has three children under the age of six and despite 40 calls to the management company in the past 6 days, no action has been taken to rectify the situation. The tenant has successfully paid their rent through the Emergency Rental Assistance Program from June 2021 through October 2021, but the management company has continued to demand additional funds directly from the tenant. The management company and landlord have no legal basis for shutting off the heat and water. The management company even demanded rent from another tenant even after the tenant had been approved for ERAP and the landlord had been notified of the approval.

The City of Buffalo has also been notified and representatives from the Department of Permits and Inspections have been working to rectify the situation by notifying the Landlord of potential violations according to the tenant.

Many Native Americans See It As "A Day of Mourning"

The Truth About Thanksgiving

T

here are always two sides of a story. Unfortunately, when it comes to the history of Thanksgiving, generations of Americans have been taught a one-sided history in homes and schools.

The dominant cultural and historical story has been told from the perspective of the White colonialists who landed near Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts in 1620. In this version of the Thanksgiving story, the holiday commemorates the peaceful, friendly meeting of English settlers and the Wampanoag tribe for three days of feasting and thanksgiving in 1621.

Every year, news outlets and social media are a-buzz with Thanksgiving themes. There is little coverage of the fact that November is Native American Heritage Month or that November 23rd, known to most as Black Friday, is Native American Heritage Day. The mainstream version of the Thanksgiving story paints a picture of courageous, Christian settlers, braving the perils of the New World and with the help of some friendly Natives, finding a way to make a new life for themselves.

Very few teachers tell students about the massacres of Native tribes like the Pequot that took place in the years that followed. They also do not mention that English settlers robbed Wampanoag graves and stole food from them in order to survive during their first years on this new continent.

Here’s a look at some of the reasons why Thanksgiving is a complex holiday, and one that all Americans should approach with greater sensitivity.

Thanksgiving Is a Day of Mourning for Some Native Tribes It’s important to know that for many Native Americans, Thanksgiving is a day of mourning and protest since it commemorates the arrival of settlers in North America and the centuries of oppression and genocide that followed after.

For the last 51 years, the United American Indians of New England have organized a rally and day of mourning on Thanksgiving. Here’s what they have to say about this choice to mourn: “Thanksgiving day is a reminder of the genocide of millions of Native people, the theft of Native lands, and the relentless assault on Native culture. Participants in National Day of Mourning honor Native ancestors and the struggles of Native peoples to survive today. It is a day of remembrance and spiritual connection as well as a protest of the racism and oppression which Native Americans continue to experience.”

Some Native Americans mourn publicly and openly, while some simply refrain from participating in this national holiday.

Thanksgiving is Already a Way of Life for Native Americans While some Native Americans have chosen to reject the Thanksgiving holiday entirely, many embrace the positive messages of the holiday and choose to put aside thoughts about the complex history of this day.

This is because the idea of giving thanks is central to Native heritage and culture, and in this way, Thanksgiving is simply a chance to appreciate the good things of life like family, community, and the riches of the land. Long before settlers arrived, Native tribes were celebrating the autumn harvest and the gift of Mother Earth’s abundance. Native American spirituality, both traditionally and today, emphasizes gratitude for creation, care for the environment, and recognition of the human need for communion with nature and others.

The Vital Importance Of The Black Press

By Joan L. Simmons ecently I had the opportunity to participate in an event via Zoom that was hosted by The Amsterdam News and moderated by its' Publisher, Elinor Tatum. For those who do not know, The Amsterdam News (also known as New York Amsterdam News) is a weekly Black-owned newspaper serving New York City. It is one of the oldest newspapers geared toward African Americans in the United States and has published columns by notable people including W. E. B. Du Bois, Roy Wilkins, and Adam Clayton Powell Jr., and was the first to recognize and publish Malcolm X. The first issue of The Amsterdam News was published 112 years ago.

Like The Challenger, it offers the "New Black View" within local and national news. While many white "mainstream" newspapers have perished our Black Press has thrived, but it has not always been easy or profitable. And without our continued active support, they may not survive.

They are vital to our community because the Black perspectives on local, state and national news issues are seldom reflected in the mainstream news media. This was never more evident than the coverage by The Buffalo News, of the recent race for Mayor of the City of Buffalo. The mostly white editorial boards of most mainstream newspapers have for centuries attempted to define for Black and other communities of color, who and what issues should be important to them. They believe falsely that having one or two reporters of color on their payroll provides them all of the insight they need. That, by virtue of their skin color these individuals are endowed with some "special" insight and knowledge. They, the mainstream media, is inclined to publish issues regarding our communities of color only if it involves crime or some other negative.

The Challenger, under the outstanding and commendable leadership of Editor/Publisher Alnisa Banks provides the Black community with a much needed forum to express their perspectives, ideas and opinions about issues that impact their lives and community. For that, I am sincerely thankful and grateful. Ms. Banks is a true professional who deserves and has earned our respect and support. She has demonstrated her commitment, time and time again, to place the best interests of our community first and foremost.

And she accomplishes this with honesty, dignity and integrity.

Ms. Tatum, Editor of The Amsterdam News expressed in one sentence my perspective and views regarding the Black Press and I paraphrase- BLACK NEWSPAPERS HELP OUR COMMUNITIES KNOW ITSELF.

Thanksgiving as a holiday originates from the Native American philosophy of giving without expecting anything in return. In the first celebration of this holiday, the Wampanoag tribe not only provided the food for the feast, but also the teachings of agriculture and hunting (corn, beans, wild rice, and turkey are some specific examples of foods introduced by Native Americans).

Now, regardless of the origin of the day, many Native Americans will gather with friends and family and use the day to eat good food (many of the classic Thanksgiving dishes are inspired by indigenous foods) and give thanks.

Dual System of Justice on Display

A number of actions taking place in our courts today are confirming what we as Black people have always known and experienced, namely, a dual system of justice in America.

One for Black and people of color, and one for White people.

Consider the following current events as supportive proof of this statement. For those who attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6 in what we now know was an “insurrection” with intent to kill, we have seen those people identified and charged get light sentences. Consider the White grandmother who posted all kinds of proud photos at the “rally” and received a sentence of “community service”. Others got less than a year in prison time where maximum sentences were available.

Consider now the Kyle Rittenhouse case under way in Kanosa, Wisconsin for the shooting of three people and the killing of two following the protest of the police shooting of Mr. Jacob Blake. Rittenhouse drove out of his way to attend the protest with an AK-47 assault rifle. Charged with murder by the prosecution, we have an old white judge who decides that those shot and or killed cannot be called victims but must be called “looters”, even though they were not on trial. This action in and of itself was prejudicial.

Now the judge has gone two steps further. First, he excused Rittenhouse's bail violation by not informing the court that he had moved. Such actions by Blacks and people of color have led to bail revocation and lockup.

Second, the Judge’s most recent blasting of the prosecution with such personal hostility in front of the jury certainly should be considered prejudicial and suggests that the judge is unfit to continue presiding over this trial. Consider the defense motion to “declare a mistrial with “prejudice”, which, if granted, would be the same as an acquittal.

The people of Wisconsin should file complaints against the judge with the State Judicial Tenure Commission and should ask the judge to either remove himself or request to have him removed. If he were Black, the process would already be underway. It appears that where prosecutors are finally seeking convictions of such crimes of Whites against people of color, the judges are making more leniency available.

Let us not forget the Arbery trail in Georgia, where the three white men accused of the murder are saying they had a right to kill Mr. Arbery under an old Civil War statute allowing the murder of Black folks. And let us not forget the importance of jury selection, which so often eliminates people of color as much as we so often seek to find ways not to serve.

Yes, our courts are still racist, even at their best. The disproportionate number of Blacks incarcerated offers a sobering statement of facts. If we are to be a nation of laws, then those laws must apply to everyone equally. Clearly Lady Justice has not been blind when dealing with people of color. So let’s get involved as watchmen and help her do right.

Are Talks on Bills Stadium in the City Just Window Dressing?

F

or over two decades Patrick Freeman has been advocating for a domed stadium in downtown Buffalo.

A veteran sports writer for The Criterion (The Mighty O'Ba Sports Report), he has covered 21 NFL Superbowl's and visited every stadium in the country, except three - 16 of those located in downtown areas of the city.

Last week he spoke at a public meeting sponsored by the Common Council on the currently hot topic dealing with where a new Buffalo Bills Stadium should be built.

Aside from feeling shortchanged in terms of speaking time (“I spoke no more than 7 or 8 minutes while, for example, prominent developer Rocco Termini spoke for approximately an hour and 15 minutes!), Freeman said he felt the meeting - and the conversation in general and across the board- is “just placating us.”

That’s because nobody’s talking about private investment funding for the project, surmises Freeman.

“Cost verses return is my biggest argument,” he continued. Taxpayer subsidization programs may be OK from a business standpoint, but it hurts the masses of the residents.

“But they’re not listening,” he concluded. “I truly believe they’ve got the deal done."

et us examine a downtown stadium complex vs building a single sport stadium in Orchard Park which has been proposed by the professional team’s current ownership group.

The biggest difference in proposals is the downtown stadium complex is a private investment deal that must show potential investors that it will make a profit. The Orchard Park stadium proposal only makes a profit for the ownership group. The residual benefits of this antiquated proposal will also be seen on the downtown stadium side but with several distinct differences that must be discussed publicly and not behind closed doors. Some officials are saying that this process should be private because the professional owners are a private business. The problem with that reasoning is a non-governmental business seeking public funding and are the recipients of existing tax subsidies in the amount of close to $28 million per season disqualifies you from being a true private run business.

The downtown stadium complex creates and revamps the existing out of date convention space by also including a new privately funded Dome stadium, convention center, hotel, retail space, and other ancillary tenants.

This proposal is being duplicated now by the Los Angeles Clippers, Arizona Coyotes, and has already been done in other cities. Remember pro football facilities only offer limited use and therefore the proposal made by the professional team ownership group is one of the worst in recent history. It is a proposal laced with the threat of "I will move the team to a city that will meet my demand."

This threat, based on the NFL by laws, must be approved by twenty-four out of thirty-two owners if no stadium deal is reached.

That is the beauty of the private investment deal which would fund a multi-use dome stadium along with a modern convention center, and other ancillary tenants that will enhance the activity of the entire region including us- Patrick Freeman gestures as he addresses ing the light rail system to cut down on traffic Council. Street Legacy Photo issues that currently are one of the worst in the NFL at the Orchard Park site.

The professional team’s proposal is a status quo proposal with them being the only beneficiaries and the difference from late owner Ralph Wilson’s demand which had a price tag of twenty-three million dollars compared to the current group’s which is over 1.5 billion with little or no benefit to the region outside of what already exists.

The Private investment proposal will create thousands of living wage jobs during the build out with thousands more after completion. This will be the greatest city enhancement that will bring even more activity from Southern Ontario into Western New York. The downtown proposal will only need government to fund infrastructure with a return on the investment. Some of the infrastructure for the downtown stadium complex should have been done years ago, especially expanding and improving our light rail system.

The Orchard Park proposal is veiled in corporate welfare and how businesses try to sell trickle-down economics as a basis of making money on the backs of taxpayers. This practice must end, especially NFL franchises which still operate as 501 C6 which allows them privileges that most certainly is enough economic consideration.

Support the private downtown stadium proposal for a greater more prosperous region that benefits all!
