A very warm welcome to Mill Meadow for our first home game of the new BetVictor Isthmian League South Central Division.

We couldn’t have dreamed of a better start to the season as we outplayed Ashford Town, another side having to rebuild during the summer. The refreshing style of play that Finlay has brought to the side was in stark contrast to that which we had perhaps become accustomed to in recent times.

We welcome our visitors from Bedfont Sports and hope their players, officials and supporters enjoy their short time with us.

From the Manager Hello everyone and welcome to Mill Meadow for our first home league game of the season! I'm really excited to see everyone and beginning to make this ground a fortress for the season. Before I start I'd like to thank Denis, Benny, Ian and everyone else for making me, my staff and my players feel so welcome at the club since our arrival.

We've had a very successful pre season, going through loads of players to find the beginnings of a brand new team! I feel we've done very well to get there and I'm really positive about the season ahead. Evidence to support my positivity was clear to see on Saturday where we started our campaign with a 4-0 victory away to Ashford Town Middlesex. With an average age of 21.8 our lads showed maturity beyond their years, riding a storm from Ashford in the second half before tucking away 3 quick goals. The game was changed by our forward substitutes, creating the last 3 goals between them. Proving our squad is a strong one and we will rely on that throughout the season. Hopefully we can build on it tonight! Enjoy the game!

MATCH REPORT Ashford Town (Middx) 0 The new Chalfont era began with a bang as manager Finlay Johnson led his young charges to a comprehensive win in the season opener. After a slow start, as both sides moved out of pre-season gear, Saints soon looked the most likely to take control of the game. The experienced David Pitt saw a lot of the ball down the left flank and a long range shot dipped just over the bar to signal Saints' intent. Brunton drew a first save from Dan Purdue after being put in by the dangerous Adjei as the home side tried to find a way through a determined Saints defence. However, it was the extra pace of Dan Williams that brought the opening goal as he latched on to a Wickenden pass to fire home across the keeper. It was the start of a golden passage of play for Williams as he saw a cross skim the top of the bar and then had another shot pushed on to the post. A clumsy challenge on the edge of the box just before the break might have brought a better reward amid calls for a red card rather than the lecture the home defender received. Saints continued to press after the break and Kofi Quartey somehow screwed a shot wide on the hour mark. His substitution by Sodike Thompson soon after had an already stretched home defence under severe pressure as the

Saints 4

success of the Chalfont open trials held during the summer had them chasing shadows as he was instrumental in Saints hitting two goals in as many minutes as first Luke Jones and then Andre Odetola netted from close range. Purdue made another strong save as Saints defied any challenge to their clean sheet. Kahlil Francis was pulled down in the area for Riccardo AlexanderGreenaway to extend the lead from the penalty spot before Ashford had their best chance in the dying minutes as Adjei got around Purdue only for Jordan Payne to clear off the line. Saints can take a lot of positives from this opening game and Finlay Johnson and his coaching team must be congratulated on how far their hard work has brought the side. Saints: Dan Purdue, Ricky Brennan (Callum Doyle 84), Luke Elliott, Danny Wickenden, Jordan Payne, Riccardo Alexander-Greenway, Dan Williams, Andre Odetola, Kofi Quartey (Sodike Thompson 67), Luke Jones, David Pitt (Kahlil Francis 79). Our Visitors History Bedfont Sports

Bedfont Sports Club was founded in 2002, when with considerable help from the local Council a lease was taken out on the near derelict Hatton Road Recreation Ground. The only building on the site was refurbished to allow use as a bar and clubhouse on the ground floor and changing rooms on the upper one. Most of this work was carried out or supervised by the Chairman Dave Reader. Much work was also done to the playing area to provide playable pitches for Bedfont Sports on Saturdays and Bedfont Sunday, one of the oldest Sunday teams in Middlesex, on Sundays. To give the Club a junior section Bedfont Eagles, formed in 1978, joined the two adult Clubs a short time later. Bedfont Sports started in the Hounslow and District League for two seasons and then joined the Middlesex County Football League, this being a feeder League to Step 5. More work was needed to enable the team to play in the Premier Division of the MCFL to which they gained promotion in 2004/05. After many ups and downs promotion was finally achieved to the Combined Counties in season 2008/09. In the Combined Counties League Bedfont gained promotion to the Premier Division in

season 2011/12 and have spent the past few seasons consolidating that position. Last season so all our hard work pay off when we gained promotion to the Bostik League finishing 2nd behind Westfield FC During this time the club worked hard to raise funds to upgrade our facility to one of the best in Middlesex. In 2010 we started work on floodlights and a new dressing room block was built together with a 3G five a side pitch and an 11v11 3G pitch along with over 500 seats in 4 stands on all 4 sides of the ground, which now complete gives us one of the best facilities not only in Middlesex but in the south of England. Bedfont Sports is a true Community Club catering for 23 Junior Teams. a girls section, 2 Bedfont Sunday teams and our 1st Team now ply their trade at Step 4 for the 1st time in the clubs history. The Youth Section is particularly vibrant playing in the Bostik Youth League (currently Top of the Division) and having won the Middlesex County Senior Cup back in 2015. We are very proud that our Youth teams have been home-grown from Bedfont Eagles and with some real talent coming through this will continue for years to come. A Club such as Bedfont Sports could not exist without sponsors so a big thank you to them and to the volunteers who give their time on match days and to the marking and upkeep of the ground and facilities.

finish 14th. The lower echelons became the accustomed territory for Saints for several seasons until Dean’s departure at the end of the 2003/04 season. Managing Chalfont to victory in the Berks & Bucks Under-18 Challenge Cup was a young Danny Edwards. His reward was to be handed the reins of the First Team for the new season. And so began a rollercoaster ride of success and near misses that continued until just recently. the hunt for the league title all the way to the last week of the season but the fixture congestion caused by the cup successes began to tell and they couldn’t quite make it across the line, eventually finishing a brave third. Losses in the finals of the Challenge Trophy and the Wycombe Senior Cup took a little bit of the shine off what was a brilliant season for the club. Expectations were high going into season 2009/10 after going close to promotion in the two previous seasons. A slow start and a nightmare run of losses in October saw the title chase wobble and rapid exits from all cup competitions. But an incredible run of form with just one defeat in 23 took Saints to the top to the pile where they became the target for other teams’ top performances and it wasn’t until they were overtaken by Aylesbury in the last two games that they had to settle for the runners-up spot again. At the start of 2010/11, the aim was clear: promotion was the number one target. Getting off to an incredible start in notching up seventeen straight wins, Saints grabbed top spot and refused to relinquish it for the entire season, never being less than four points clear at any stage. The focus was clear and any progress in the cups was quickly curtailed. Such was the dominance in the league, the champagne corks popped with five games to spare as the title was secured. The curtain was brought down on the record breaking season and their five year stay in the Spartan League by winning the Challenge Trophy for an unprecedented league and cup double. For the 2011/12 season, life was

expected to be a trial for Saints yet they made a bright start in their new environs and quickly acclimatised. For long periods they were genuine contenders but a poor end to the season, combined with the loss of totemic striker Charlie Strutton to the professional ranks, saw them fall away into the mid table. A strong run in the FA Cup illuminated the 2012/13 season. An impressive win at Carshalton Athletic earned a tie against Conference side Bishop’s Stortford. A draw at Mill Meadow set up a replay that ultimately proved a step too far. Playing with style, Saints were to earn the Division’s Fair Play title but couldn’t reach the play-off positions. With a lack of firepower, the 2013/14 was a disappointing way to mark Danny Edwards’ tenth season in charge. The lack of goals consigned the side to a midtable finish despite boasting one of the meanest defences. 2014/15 saw the goals begin to return. A promising start saw the side hard to beat but too many draws held them back. A run in the FA Cup, highlighted by a deserved win in front of a baying Kettering crowd was coupled with a strong run in November that saw the club in a playoff position but from such heights, a miserable New Year run saw them tumble down into relegation territory. It took a stubborn recovery in April to ensure eventual safety. 2015/16 was a highwater mark for Saints in their current run in the Southern League. Putting aside an early exit in the FA Cup Saints went on to head the table at New Year and looked set for their first tilt at the play offs, if not more. Sadly they repeated the poor run of results

thereafter and fell away to finish sixth. Still an excellent all-round season as Tony Mendy secured top scorer honours in the division with 30 goals. In contrast, season 2016/17 was possibly the poorest in over a decade. A storming start to the season saw Saints in top spot throughout August but the hole left by the departed Mendy was never filled and as the goals dried up so the tumble down the table gathered pace. Some poor signings added to the problems and the second half of the season delivered just four wins and for a while relegation was a real possibility before safety was finally achieved. 2017/18 was one of our most exciting seasons in the Southern League, our seventh, with the side in playoff contention right up until the final few games. Our peerless record against those sides who ultimately claimed the top places, with just the single defeat in 12 games, including a notable double against champions Beaconsfield Town, underlined how competitive a side we were. Still struggling for goals, it was our defence that led the way with 16 clean

sheets. It was a season that saw evergreen skipper Alan Hedley pass the 500 games mark and manager Danny Edwards reach 700 games in charge. Saints embrace change but enjoy stability at the same time. 2018/19 saw Saints return to the Isthmian League after 12 seasons as football was restructured. An inconsistent defence and a shortage of goals ensured Saints were unable to escape the mid-table places. Towards the end of the season, Danny Edwards signalled his wish to step down from the role he had held with such distinction and Saints had to begin the process of finding a new manager. The dawn of the 2019/20 season sees Saints, not only with a new management team, led by Finlay Johnson, another young manager being given the opportunity to prove himself at the higher level, but also a wholly new squad as players followed Edwards to new pastures. The opportunity to build something new from the ground up promises to be an exciting one.
