March 2024 Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers

I would like to take the opportunity to thank the school community for their continued support over the last 18 months while I have lead across two schools. You will have received the consultation document so will be aware that the intention is for the two schools to enter into a soft federation, initially for two years, from 1st April 2024.

Thank you to all the parents and carers who took the time to complete the parent and carer survey. Senior staff will take a closer look at your feedback straight after the Easter holidays. From the sections that I have reviewed, your comments are overall positive and supportive of the school.

There has certainly been a great deal of different activities taking place at Chadwell since the last newsletter. As a school, we endeavour to offer a variety of learning experiences beyond the classroom and with the support of parent/carer volunteers to increase the adult/child ratio, only helps towards making that experience for all more enjoyable. Mind you, for those parent/carer volunteers who braved the rain during the Year 2 trip to Epping Forest, they most certainly had an unforgettable experience that day.

During the Easter break, some of our school community will continue to fast during the month of Ramadan and will celebrate Eid. I would like to take this opportunity to wish our Muslim community Eid Mubarak.

For those of you who will be observing the Easter celebrations, I wish you a Happy Easter. For the rest of the school community, I wish you a happy Easter break and we will see you all on Tuesday 16th April at 8.50am.

Kind regards,,

School re opens on Tuesday 16th April 2024 at 8.50am for all pupils

Dear Parents, Carers and children of Chadwell Primary School,

As some of you will be aware, I am leaving Chadwell Primary School this week. Though I am sad to say goodbye to you all, I am excited to share that I have secured a promotion at another local school.

Over the last 5 years, it has been an absolute honour and pleasure to teach so many of your wonderful children and get to know you all. I have really enjoyed watching them challenge themselves and develop their identities as learners. Each and every one of them has made me incredibly proud to be a member of the Chadwell community.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support, particularly in relation to promoting a love of reading. Since starting at Chadwell, we have celebrated our love of reading through World Book Day celebrations, poetry weeks and author visits – to name but a few. I know that you will all keep developing your love of reading and seek a lot of enjoyment from diving into the pages of a book. As Mr Walker says “READING IS. . . FUNDAMENTAL!”

Thank you to those of you who have wished me well and given me cards or gifts, they really do mean a lot. I may be leaving but I will be taking a lot of wonderful memories with me, that I will cherish forever.

I hope that you all have a restful and enjoyable break and wish a Happy Easter to those of you who are celebrating.

Remember to take every opportunity to achieve your dreams and shine through all you do.

Goodbye and Good Luck.

On the week beginning of Monday 12th March 22 children took part in bike-ability Level 1 .

At the start of the week none of the children could ride a bike. We had two amazing instructors from bike-ability teaching them to free ride around the playground. They were successful and achieved this by the end of the week. These children showed incredible perseverance and did not give up which shows great ambition in learning.

Today at Chadwell Primary School, we had a special visitor the Easter bunny.

The bunny’s entrance was accompanied by a performance from the Chadwell Samba Band.

The children all received a special treat from the Easter bunny.

Well done to all the children and their beautiful bonnets.

Well done to all our children and all the bonnets were amazing. Please find the list of winners below:

Between 4th and 6th of March, year 4 pupils visited the Science Museum as part of their Science topic 'Electricity'.

Inside the 'Secret Life of the Home Gallery,' we were able to view various household appliances from the past to the present day whilst learning about the role electricity played in their development.

There were plenty of things to see and do and we were able to explore a range of interactive galleries.

Year 4 -Veer, Rayyan S and Adeena

On Tuesday the 12th and Wednesday the 13th of March, Year 2 went on an exciting visit to Epping Forest as part of their science topic – Living things and their habitats.

While there, they took part in two different activities:

Pond dipping: Using a net, the children explored the water to find out what lived in there. They found lots of exciting things, including: pond snails, newts and water hoglice.

Mini beast hunting: The children explored lots of microhabitats (small areas within a large habitat) to investigate what invertebrates live there. They rolled logs, looked through leaf litter and carefully examined the soil. Some of the invertebrates they found were: woodlice, slugs, worms, spiders and snails.

Comments from the children:

World Book Day 2024

Yet again, the community of Chadwell Primary School put in a fantastic amount of effort, to celebrate World Book Day. Throughout the day, classes across the school paired up with one another, to share their love of reading for pleasure. It was fantastic to see so many staff and children relaxing in their pyjamas, with a good book. I know many of us ended the day with some new book recommendations, which is fantastic.

Thank you to all of our parents and carers for supporting your child to come to school in their pyjamas and share their love of reading.

Please don’t forget that they each have a £1 book token to spend by the 31st of March 2024.

Here are the £1 books that were released especially for World Book Day this year:

On Friday 1st March, we held our first ever Movie Night for Reception, Year 1 and 2 children where they came back to school in their pyjamas with their blankets and snuggled down to watch Sing 2. This was then followed by Years 3 and 4 on Friday 8th March where they watched Luca.

The children received a snack pack for the movie which included chocolate, popcorn and a drink.

All of the children had lots of fun and enjoyed spending the evening with their friends.

As we have not had a hall for two years, Chadwell has not been able to have a school orchestra club for a while so as soon as the hall was reinstated back in September, orchestra was able to start again. We currently have 32 children in orchestra consisting of children from years 4, 5 & 6 who have individual music lessons playing violin, cello, flute, oboe, clarinet and piano. In addition, children were invited to apply to play additional instruments like the glockenspiel, metallophone, untuned percussion, timpani drums and even a harp! We’ve beengetting used to the challenge of following a conductor, playing independent parts whilst other people play something differently, being adaptable at counting rests, changing dynamics (getting louder and quieter) and making sure no one drowns anyone else’s sound out. It is a big challenge!!! We also have two orchestral managers who do not play music but who are learning the valuable skill of administration, librarianship, setting up, ensuring personnel are all present which is a very valuable and important role to ensure the orchestra rehearsals are able to run smoothly. As part of orchestra’s development, we arranged for tickets for the children to go and watch the world famous London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican cemtre in London. We watched a programme entitled HeroesandVillainsI featuring music by Aaron Copland, John Williams, Rimsky Korsakov, Giacommo Rossini and we also participated in a lively song called Billy’sHoedown– a lively dance piece by the composer Rachel Leach who introduced the concert.

To get there and back, we had fun encountering various corridors of the Elizabeth line, trains and the labyrinthine Barbican centre...

This year, Redbridge Music Service have launched the very first RedbridgePrimaryChoiroftheYear competition. Schools from all Redbridge Primary Schools were invited to apply with their choirs. Chadwell Year 5-6 choir naturally wanted to enter this! 24 schools have entered the competition in total. On Wednesday 6th March, we travelled to Farnham Green Primary School to attend our first stage of the competition. 6 schools were present. We started with a vocal warm-up and then settled down to watch the competition! Farnham Green began with 2 lively songs– Herecomesthesun and Shosholoza.St Bede’s followed with WhatawonderfulWorld!St Aiden’s massive choir of 46 sang a gospel mashup. Goodmayes followed with a song called Refugeand then Aldborough Primary sang a song from Sixthemusical! Finally, it was Chadwell’s turn. We walked on (we’d practised!) and sang 2 songs– Dreamerand a Jamaican folk song, Watercomeo’meeye After this, we sang a song together whilst thejudge wrote her reports. Chadwell’s feedback was very good. We were praised for how we walked on and stood. We were told we sounded confident and made a good sound which was in tune. Our feedback to reflect on included making sure we didn’t sing TOO loudly, trying not to slide between 2 long notes in our first song and trying to ensure our voices are more balanced when singing in parts/harmonies. It was lovely for the children to see how other choirs sound and to receive critique from experiencedjudges! Did we get through to the final in April? YES WE DID!!!!!

At the beginning of March, we held two Mother’s Day craft sessions. These were attended by lots of children who spent time making keyrings, cards and pictures for their mums/someone special.

The children really enjoyed themselves. We hope you liked the gifts they made for you and had a lovely Mother’s Day.

This week, our Year 2 pupils had an enriching experience as they took part in an RE workshop organized by Miss Parvu, with the support of the Christian Education Project (CEP). The workshop focused on Easter-related activities and aimed to provide a hands-on learning experience for the children.

During the workshop, the young learners had the opportunity to create their own stained-glass artwork, incorporating Easter themes and symbols. This creative task served as a perfect culmination of their learning on What Christians do at Easter and why this holiday is significant for Christians.

The workshop was met with great enthusiasm from the children, who thoroughly enjoyed the session. It was not only educational but also a fun and practical way for them to wrap up their Easter topic. "

We are thrilled to share with you the amazing adventure that The Reception Year Group recently embarked on, to the VUE cinema! Our young pupils had the fantastic opportunity to expand their cultural capital by traveling via public transport (the train), to reach their destination.

During the trip, the children not only learned how to navigate the trainjourney with the guidance of staff and parent volunteers but also experienced the thrill of travelling on escalators a new and exciting experience for many of them. Upon reaching the VUE cinema, the children were filled withjoy and anticipation as they settled in to watch the latest Paw Patrol film and eat their snacks.

The trip to the cinema was notjust a fun outing but also a valuable learning experience for the children. They were able to begin to learn and understand the importance of road safety, how to travel on a train, as well as the etiquette involved in travelling with a group. We would like to thank Mrs Spiceley for organising this fun adventure and to all of our parent volunteers for their support.

On the 13th March Mr Haywood took 11 children down to Chadwell Academy to participate in a basketball competition with 17 schools attending - all keen to reach the finals and win! This was a very well-run event with school leaders (Year 9’s) from Chadwell Academy refereeing the games. They were very knowledgeable especially since they play for the school and outside clubs, so it was always going to be very fair for all schools taking part.

We had two teams (team A and team B) they were in different groups with 6 schools in each group. Both teams had to face 5 different schools in the borough: the top two teams in their group go through into the quarter finals. During the group stages both teams were on different courts.

Both teams were competing at a very high level and their opponents were very skilful, but with months of training and working hard after school on a Tuesday, we were able to match their abilities and show other teams/schools why ‘practice is more important than no training’.

Team 1 managed to win all their group stage games performing fantastically well under the pressure. They played 5 and won 5 with school leaders approaching the children and Mr Haywood saying ‘how well we played’ and ‘you’ve got a fantastic structure in place with how well you all get along and how well you play the game’. We were greatly appreciated by these kind words!

Team 2 only played 4 games instead of 5 due to a mis-understanding which resulted in us not reaching the quarter finals. They won 2, drew 1 and lost one. They were very unlucky not to qualify but the teams this year were of a very high standard. Nonetheless, our basketball players played extremely well and didn’t give up! They also had a great team spirit amongst each other.

Team 1 convincingly won their quarter final match with great attributes of skill and ability, but Mr Haywood kept team 1 focused as he mentioned ‘there is still a long way to go but stay positive and focus on your next opponents’. The team stepped out for the semi-final with great determination and focus. It was a very close game, back and forth with both teams gaining points throughout the game. Tiredness took its toll on our children and that resulted in a few mistakes which potentially cost us our slot into the final. Unfortunately, St Augustine’s came out on top and beat our very talented team, but what a great semi-final it was.

We then had to play for 3rd and 4th spot against Aldersbrook Primary School. With our confidence still very high we managed to gain 3rd spot out of 17 schools taking part. This is a great achievement but still very disappointing. On the plus, this is a great learning curve for our pupils as it teaches them about losing and helps regulate their emotions while in a different environment which they showed brilliantly. Well done to Nightingale Primary School for winning the tournament!

As you know we take pleasure in sharing photos and videos of your children enjoying events and achievements in and associated with Chadwell. Our school rule was that the taking of photos and videos at events, e.g. school concerts, was prohibited to respect the wishes of parents who did not give permission for photos and videos to be taken of their children. However, we feel that you, as parents/carers, should have the opportunity to take your own photos at such events and therefore moving forwards we will allow photos and videos to be taken at school events, however, we kindly ask that you do not re-share these images on social media platforms. Please take into consideration the wishes of other parents/carers who would not like images of their child re-shared.

Please note that the permission to take photographs at events will not affect the consents that you have given on your child’s Student Update Form for inclusion in newsletters, displays, website etc.

It is important to note that unfortunately, Chadwell Primary School has no control and is unable to take any responsibility for the re-sharing of photos and videos onto other social media platforms.

Thank you for your co-operation.

As a school, safeguarding the welfare of your child is paramount and is at the heart of all decision making. Over the years, we have needed to restrict parents/carers from making electronic recordings of certain school events and ban the use of mobile phones and smart devices across the whole site which means inside and outside of the building.

This may seem extreme but there are pupils attending the school whose parents/carers have requested that their child’s image not be captured while at school. We cannot control how images are used if they are taken by another parent/carer but we can put safeguard measures in place to stop such situations from happening in the first place. Please can parents/carers make sure that they are not on their phones/smart devices once they walk through the school gates and that phones/smart devices are put away.

A number of reminders have been sent out and signs are displayed around the school site. Thank you to those parents/carers who are ensuring that they are not using their mobile phones/smart devices whilst on the school premises.

Moving forward, as a school, it is important that we provide guidance on the use of mobile devices as their presence is part of modern life. The Smart Device Policy can be requested from the School Office and can be viewed on the school website. It clearly sets out the expectations of how all stakeholders will be expected to adhere to the Policy.

Parents/Carers must:

• Not take pictures or recordings of pupils, unless it’s permitted by the Headteacher, at which point clear instructions as to what is permitted will be communicated to parents

• Only use photographs or recordings for personal use only, do not post anything on social media without consent Not use their phones/smart devices while on the school grounds including within the playground or the office waiting area.

Parents or volunteers supervising school trips or residential visits must:

• Not use their phone/smart device during the visit

Not take photos or recordings of pupils, their work, or anything else which could identify a pupil

If you are seen by a member of staff using your mobile phone or smart device on the school premises, please do not take offence if you are asked put it away.

Thank you for your continued support.

LetsLocalise

Chadwell Primary School have partnered with LetsLocalise.

Why LetsLocalise?

LetsLocalise provides a solution to the challenge of financial cuts in schools. The platform builds and fosters long-term, meaningful partnerships between members of the community and their local schools. Schools can share details of upcoming events, fundraising drives, selling items on behalf of businesses and requests for volunteers or work experience placements. That way, individuals and companies can see how and where they can offer their help, time and money in ways that are productive, meaningful and enjoyable. The platform is FREE for schools and their parent groups. You can find out more about LetsLocalise at www.letslocalise.co.uk We would like to ask you to:

1) Sign up with LetsLocalise and follow our school https:// www.letslocalise.co.uk/school/chadwell-primary-school/sch104736/ campaigns/

2) Did you attend our school yourself? Please identify yourself as an alumnus in the profile.

3) Lookout for our fun online events and join in.

4) Offer support in ways that are convenient for you.

5) Share this platform with friends and family. This is a great way for grandparents and others to feel connected, and to be able to support your children in their education.

6) Share with local businesses and also your employers. Businesses have budgets to support local communities that is often not utilised. Let’s work together and show them how they can benefit our school, our children and their future. We will post all events on our LetsLocalise page,

Absences Immediately Before or After a School Holiday

If your child is absent before or after a school holiday you must submit relevant evidence of this. This may be medical evidence if your child is unwell, or evidence of flight delays or circumstances beyond your control. Without the evidence your child/ children’s absence will not be authorised and may incur a Fixed Penalty Notice.

Holidays in Term Time

Taking holidays in term time will affect your child’s schooling as much as any other absence and we expect parents to help us by not taking children away on holiday in school time.

Remember that any savings you think you may make by taking a holiday in school time are outweighed by the cost to your child’s education. There is no automatic entitlement in law to time off in school time to go on holiday. Pupils will not be allowed leave of absence in term time for holidays or any other activities.

Parents who go abroad without requesting leave could be fined using the O code; six days of O codes within a 12 week period could generate a penalty notice.

Sanctions for an Unauthorised Leave of Absence without Permission

A Fixed Penalty Notice will be issued for unauthorised leave of absence taken without permission after the first day of absence. It will be issued by the Education Welfare Service following discussions with the Headteacher.

The school adopts the per parent per child policy; this would apply to couples living together. Therefore, for a family with 3 children, each parent would receive a fixed penalty fine for each child. This means that a family with 3 children would receive in total 6 fixed penalty fines.

This will incur a fine of £60.00 per child if paid within 21 days of receipt of the notice, rising to £120.00 per child if not paid within 28 days. The prosecution is for the offence of failing to secure attendance at school and not for non-payment of the fine.

· Prosecutions are brought under Section 444 of the Education Act 1996.

· There is no statutory right of appeal against the issuing of a Penalty Notice.

· Arrangements for payment will be detailed on the penalty notice.

It should be noted that Chadwell Primary intends to implement this policy strictly as we believe that short absences severely hamper a child’s education.
