SECTIONAL PERSPECTIVE

RIEBEEK SQUARE MUSIC SCHOOL

My final university project brief was to design a school for a chosen discipline on a historically significant location in the central CBD of Cape Town. I chose to design a music school for orchestral, classic and jazz genres. Important considerations were the nearby town hall which was to remain, and all of the surrounding buildings which varied greatly in size and function. Also needing consideration was the abutting main vehicular street, which has historically been considered a gateway to the city and the urban landscapes threshold. avenues.

EAST ELEVATION The large, dominating, dark slate cladded portion is the presiding feature of the building. Seen as the main event, it creates a presence and domain over the historic recreational square. It also houses the main performance auditorium and intermission lobby which overlooks the busy street and surrounding avenues. The bottom three levels are finished in light acidwashed concrete and precast concrete louvers slide along the length of the faรงade. This is the lighter, more subsidiary element of the building, keeping a more clean and simple appearance in contrast to the auditorium.

WOODSTOCK MIXED USE COMPLEX

The brief for this project was to propose a mixed-use commercial residential building in Woodstock, Cape Town. The surrounding context was a main informant in the buildings form, scale and its relationship with the street. The ground floor has very purposefully considered double-volume commercial and retail spaces that contribute to the interaction on the sidewalk. The central entrance leads you from the corner through vertical access to the residential levels, and to a courtyard behind the retail units. The residential units are designed in varying densities to encourage varying income levels of occupants in the same building.
