MONTHEY « Business, culture, and shopping » : The heart and economic capital of the Chablais valaisan and a good gateway to the Vald’Illiez, Monthey is a town with a festive character and love for culture. Visitors can explore the town’s colourful history and legends, like the thrilling tales of Gros-Bellet, at the Musée du Vieux Monthey, which was then a castle. The Old Wooden Bridge, another important landmark, once provided passage to Napoleon's troops. As a center for culture, Monthey’s renowned Théâtre du Crochetan and the P’tit Théâtre de la Vièze host a variety of plays, shows, concerts and conferences throughout the year. The famous Carnival in February is one of the largest and oldest Carnavals. One of the most important event of the year, however, is the traditional village market. The sporting facilities are countless and there is a great choice of infrastructures for swimming, skating, tennis and horse riding. » www.monthey.ch

ST-GINGOLPH « From lakeside to mountain top » : St-Gingolph is a charming town sitting precisely astride the French-Swiss border on the southern bank of Lake Geneva. Situated 20 minutes' drive from Evian, Monthey or Montreux, the village is accessible by road, rail (the Tonkin line) or boat (CGN). Built on the alluvial cone of the Morge River, the river which marks the border between France and Switzerland, St-Gingolph is backed by two majestic mountains, the Grammont and the Blanchard. This unique setting between lake and soaring alpine peaks makes this an unrivalled point of departure for walking excursions. On the heights above the village lies the hamlet of Frenay, much sought after in summer for its forests and shady glades. Other popular destinations include the Lakes of Tanay, Lovenex and Darbon-Grammont or the Dent d'Oche and the Cornettes de Bise.

St-Gingolph runs for 8 km along the shore of Lake Geneva, making this charming town the record-holder for the longest shorefront in the Valais. At the entrance of the village, a fountain in the form of a barque, the « butterfly winged » sailboat used traditionally on Lake Geneva, attests to the town’s proud lakeside heritage. Visitors of the fountain are invited to sample the town’s natural mineral waters, already well-known for their curative properties in Roman times. After visiting St-Gingolph, take a leisurely cruise on one of the CGN’s (General Navigation Company) elegant antique paddlewheel steamships. The view from the lake of the nearby hamlet of Bret is so charming you may just want to step off the boat for a short stroll through its shady forest. » www.st-gingolph.ch

THE PORTUARY VILLAGES OF LES EVOUETTES AND LE BOUVERET « Water sports and amusement parks » : Nestled between the shores of Lake Geneva and the soaring Alps, the Port-Valais Township boasts a unique geographical situation. The village of Les Evouettes, where life is still lived to the rhythm of harvests and vineyards, has preserved a quaint, rural atmosphere. Le Bouveret is a friendly and welcoming village whose advantageous location has allowed it to develop as a thriving centre for modern and original tourist attractions. Thanks to Aquaparc and Swiss Vapeur Parc, Le Bouveret is gaining renown for its lively, summer-fun ambiance. However, this is also the ideal departure point for some of the region’s most spectacular hiking and biking. The breathtaking natural preserves of Taney and les Grangettes are best explored on foot, while biking is the perfect way to enjoy the lushly tranquil Rhone riverbanks or the long, easy lakeshore ride to Villeneuve and Montreux.

In addition to a magnificent, sandy beach and a beautiful outdoor pool, Le Bouveret also offers a variety of nautical sports for all ages. Alternatively, the CGN (General Navigation Company) invites you onboard one of their historic steam paddlewheels for a glamorous, leisurely cruise to the Château Chillon, Lausanne or Montreux. » www.bouveret.ch ......................................................................................

SAINT-MAURICE « Art, history, culture, heritage and learning » : Historically, Saint-Maurice was an important destination for pilgrims and throughout the ages it has gained a reputation as a centre of art and history. Guided tours of the Abbey, which was founded in 515 AD, allow visitors a rare glimpse of an unparalleled collection of gold artefacts and spectacular reliquaries dating from the Middle Ages. In the mysterious, forbidding cliff that towers above the town, the Fairy Grotto winds deep into the mountain to an underground lake and waterfall. Manmade, but no less impressive, Fort Cindey and Fort Scex testify to the town’s past as a national military stronghold and The Scex Chapel offers breathtaking, panoramic views and the Château, now a prestigious exhibition centre, overlooks the Dufour fortifications. While the Via Francigena can take pilgrims all the way to Rome, many other walking trails and cycling paths allow visitors to discover the Portes du Soleil – Chablais Region at their leisure. The Bois-Noir natural preserve is particularly rich in local flora and fauna. Although Torgon offers direct access to the massive Franco-Swiss recreational area, the terrain here is perfect for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. Torgon is the first Swiss ski resort you reach when leaving the Lake Geneva region. « ACROSS-COUNTRIES » WINTERSPORTS PORTES DU SOLEIL - CHABLAIS ..................................................................................................................

The mountain resorts of Champéry, Morgins, Val-d'Illiez / Les Crosets / Champoussin and Torgon make up the Swiss side of the international Portes du Soleil Recreational Area. The Portes du Soleil straddles the Franco-Swiss border and is one of the largest ski areas in the world, offering 12 holiday resorts, 650 km of ski runs for every level of difficulty, 204 ski lifts, 7 snow parks, 3 half pipes, 4 boarder cross, 4 snow cross, hundreds of kilometres of freeride skiing and 1, convenient hands-free ski pass.

EXCURSIONS ON THE SKI SLOPES .................................................................................................................

THE SWISS WALL IN LES CROSETS Chavanette is a vertiginous and intimidating black ski run, sometimes known as the Swiss Wall. It is spoken about in hushed tones by the skiers who come over the French border from Avoriaz, on their way to Les Crosets, and for good reason. The Pas de Chavanette is one of the most awe-inspiring ski slopes in the world. A relatively short slope, it is only about a kilometre long, but over those 1000 metres there is a gut-wrenching 400 m difference in altitude. In some places, the inclination can be as much as 50°. Only very experienced skiers and snowboarders should attempt the steeper part of the run. Skiers with less experience can take the chairlift partway down. On the very upper ridge of the Pas de Chavanette, skiers and snowboarders must track the slope alone after a long period of snow, as the piste-bashers cannot access the summit. This also means that the monster moguls under the ridge can grow to a whopping 2 m high ! Steep slope fans might enjoy this interesting tidbit of information ; Dominique Perret, the Swiss native and extreme skier who holds the world record for cliff jumping with skis, takes about 20 seconds to ski down the whole slope. By comparison, even a good skier will still take around 5 minutes to ski Chavanette. ...................................................................................................................

THE GRAND-PARADIS SKI RUN TO CHAMPÉRY This evocatively named ski run starts at the top of the Ripaille ski lift, a panoramic viewpoint providing an unobstructed view of the Dents du Midi and the Dents Blanches mountains. From February onwards, keep your eyes peeled. If you are lucky, you just might catch a glimpse of a herd of moufflons, or wild mountain sheep, grazing below the Pointe de Ripaille. To really live the Grand-Paradis experience to the fullest, you might want to stop off at either the La Pisa or Chez Marius restaurants. These quaint, on-piste restaurants serve up the perfect glass of chilled wine or steaming-hot cheese fondue to keep you going. From here on out, just point your skis downhill, sit back and enjoy the ride. Your magical journey through the pristine alpine woods ends at Grand-Paradis where a new, sixseat high-speed chair lift will whisk you back up to the top of the slopes. If you’re ready to head home for some après-ski fun, shuttle busses run regularly from Grand-Paradis to Champéry’s cable car. ...................................................................................................................

HIKING TOUR AROUND THE DENTS-DU-MIDI The Tour des Dents du Midi hiking trail is a well-marked, mid-altitude trail 42 km long, circling the foot of the majestic Dents du Midi massif. The course, which varies between 1040 and 2500 m altitude, is an ecological treasure trove. Sites to see include the Fahy waterfall, the breathtaking view of the Cime de l’Est’s north face and an abundant fauna and flora in its most untouched state. This is one of the most spectacular hikes in the world and it is also one of the most versatile. It can be completed in a day or over several days, with most people averaging 3 to 4 days. There is never a dull moment as each spectacular view is succeeded by the next. The river rapids, lovely old mountain chalets, plunging valleys, waterfalls, lakes, alpine pastures, rocky outcrops and forests seem to come straight out of the old Swiss legends. Around every corner, at every resting point, something magical awaits the patient explorer who knows how to listen to the language of nature; water splashing over stones, birdsong or the startled cry of a groundhog. Can you read the stories written in the changing patterns of shadow and light on the Alps ? Look carefully ! The animals are watching you and the flowers in the meadows are bobbing their heads to welcome you as you pass by ! » www.dentsdumidi.ch ...................................................................................................................

THE TOUR DE DON, PANORAMIC VIEWPOINT OVER THE CHABLAIS In the Chablais, not far from the shores of Lake Geneva and just above Torgon, there is a little-known mountain where visitors will find an inspiring walking trail, incidentally one of the most beautiful trails in the region. It is called the Tower of Don (1998m alt.). After making it to the top, either on foot or by chair lift from Torgon, visitors are rewarded with an extraordinary scenic view, unique even in the extraordinary Portes du Soleil region. Both Mont Blanc and Lake Geneva are visible from here, as well as some of the most impressive mountains of the lower part of the Valais : the Dents du Midi and the Combins. From the top, visitors can continue a charming walk towards the Col de Croix and onwards, via the Chalet Mouet, to the Savoyard side of the Portes du Soleil recreational area. Once here, you can stop and enjoy the food and drink available in a tranquil meadow hut before continuing on in the direction of the Col de Recon (CH). As you descend over the pass into the valley below, you might witness a rare sight : grazing mouflon, or mountain sheep. As watching for these shy creatures requires a great amount of patience and even more stealth, you may want to sit and wait for them to appear. On the sunny terrace at the La Bourri mountain refuge, you will find a comfortable seat and a beautiful view over the animals’ preferred side of the mountain. » www.torgon.ch ...................................................................................................................

THE BARMAZ PLATEAU At 1500 m, Barmaz, is one of the highlights of the Chablais region. Traditional chalet-style farms dot an idyllic valley, which is a perfect spot for family outings, picnics, walks in the woods and mushroom-picking. Worthy of mention are the two welcoming cantines, where accommodation is available (from the end of May to the beginning of October). In some of the mountain farmsteads, delicious cheeses are still made according to age-old traditions. For amateur rock climbers, a natural climbing wall is located on the spectacular Barme Rock, two minutes from the restaurants. The 47 different climbing routes range in difficulty from 3 to 7b. Whether you are on foot, on horseback, on your bike or travelling by car, Barme is easy to get to and certainly worth the detour ! Barme is not an end in itself, but a great departure point for many more destinations on foot, bikes or horseback. » www.champery.ch ...................................................................................................................

THE GALLERY DÉFAGO IN CHAMPÉRY In 1862, M. Emmanuel Défago created the Défago Gallery by carving out a natural fissure in the sheer rock wall opposite Champéry, leaving us with a spectacular promenade 600 m long. From the gallery, visitors have a breathtaking, panoramic view over Champéry and a good part of the Val-d’Illiez. In the late morning, when the sun is fully up over the Dents du Midi, this may well be the most perfect view of a picture-perfect village. Many have been charmed by this magical place hewn into the unforgiving granite of the Alps. At the turn of the 20 th century, Arthur of Clarapède wrote, « When examining the large rock wall facing Champéry, on the other side of the Vièze River, one is struck by the word gallery, written in capital letters on the rock like a shop sign. This inscription on the side of a mountain, indicates one of the prettiest and most interesting walks around Champéry. » www.champery.ch ...................................................................................................................

THE VIA FERRATA IN TIÈRE Between Val-d’Illiez and Champéry lies the Via Ferrata de Tière. This is a mountain climbing trail equipped with fixed cables, ladders and bridges, making a rather vertiginous pathway in the mountains accessible to walkers and climbers with a wide range of climbing abilities. The Via Ferrata de Tière winds its way through forests and crosses over waterfalls and rapids three times with the help of hanging bridges and passageways (the longest measures 20 meters). It is built into a rock wall with a 75° incline and full southern exposure. The technical course has an altitude gain of 125 m and the total length of the cabled course is approximately 460 m. This sport, a mix of hiking and mountain climbing, is perfect for adults and children alike. Safety equipment is obligatory and can be rented in any sports shop in Val-d’Illiez or Champéry. Advice for the people afraid of heights : the presence of a mountain guide may be helpful and will increase your enjoyment of this challenging activity. » www.champery.ch and www.valdilliez.ch 38

VIA FRANCIGÉNA Within it’s first five centuries of existence, the Roman Empire had built almost 80 000 kilometres of roads. One of these routes was particularly well travelled, for centuries assuring a steady back-and-forth circulation of people and goods from Italy to England, via Switzerland and France. This road, alternately called the Via Francigena or Via Romea, was built in the 7 th century and linked Canterbury with Rome, making it possible for the Catholic English pilgrims to go to Rome. The already well-established 5 th century St-Maurice Abbey and its treasure significantly predate the Via Francigena, which first appears in historical documents in 876. The small town of St-Maurice was thus historically an important stop on this road, the last stop before the intimidating passage over the Alps. In 990, Sigeric, the archbishop of Canterbury then, made a journey to Rome to be invested with the symbol of his appointment. On his return journey, he carefully made notes of the 80 stages of his voyage. The route he took often crosses the old Roman road, especially in Switzerland and France. In his writings, Sigeric mentioned places like the Grand-St-Bernard Pass, Bourg-St-Pierre, Orsières, St-Maurice, Vevey, Lausanne and Orbe. » www.saint-maurice.ch ................................................................................................................... ...................................................................................................................

THE «REINES» OF TOVASSIÈRE High in the Alps near Morgins lies the alpine pasture of Tovassière. Here, the old, alpine traditions are as firmly anchored as the grey rock from which the name Tovassière was taken. This is home to one of the most impressively beautiful species of cows in the Alps, the black Herens. Thought to have been brought here by the Romans, the Herens cows are one of the most highly-prized species of cattle in the Alps, well known for their agression, intelligence and the deeply entrenched hierarchic order of the herds. Combats are held yearly to establish which dominant female will lead the group. This has given rise to one of the oldest and most cherished of Valaisan traditions : the Combats des Reines. When the cows return to the alpine pastures in spring, at the famous Inalpe, the Reines, or Queens, fight each other in spectacular and hotly contested battles. THE FAIRY GROTTO IN SAINT-MAURICE Discovered over a century ago in the forbidding cliff face overhanging SaintMaurice, the mysterious Fairy Grotto was carved over time by the action of water on stone. Some say that the Good Fairy Frisette can still be seen, watching over the visitors of her home. Others tell a chilling legend about a dragon that once lived here and was petrified by the fairy Carabosse as he tried to escape. What we do know is that the grotto was originally opened for exploitation in 1863 by the nuns who ran the Vérolliez orphanage in order to bring in extra funds for the orphans. After visiting the grotto, stop and sample some delicious local specialties at the charming café. THE GATEWAY TO CULTURE PORTES DU SOLEIL - CHABLAIS ..................................................................................................................

Although our feet are firmly planted in the 21st century, the Chablais is an ancient land with a long history. Our mountains and valleys are dotted with historical sites like the castles of Chillon and Saint-Maurice, the St-Gingolph Boating History Museum and the Old Mill on the Tine River in Troistorrents. One of our most famous sites is the fascinating Abbey of St. Maurice, which was founded in 515 and is now the oldest active abbey north of the Alps.

MUSEUMS AND CASTLES .................................................................................................................

THE ABBEY OF SAINT-MAURICE The Abbey of St. Maurice was founded in 515 on the tomb of the Theban martyr Maurice and his companions. Today, the Regular Canons of Saint Augustine are active in parish ministries, teaching and missionary work. The Cult of Martyrs developed here at the Abbey and the land around the city of Agaune became a spiritual centre during the second reign of the Burgundians (888), and following that during the dynasty of the Dukes of Savoy. Agaune took the name of Saint-Maurice after the Abbey, which was built on the tomb of the warrior-martyr Maurice. Legend says that Maurice, leader of the famed Roman Theban Legion in the 3 rd century, was beheaded after refusing to attack local Christians. Maurice’s troupes were then « decimated », a practice which consisted of beheading every 10 th soldie. » www.saint-maurice.ch ................................................................................................................... ...................................................................................................................

THE OLD MILL OF THE TINE The Old Mill on the Tine River is one of the jewels in our cultural and historical crown. This ensemble of traditional buildings, dating from the 15th century, clings to the steep rocky walls of the Tine River Gorge near Troistorrents. In this spectacular setting above the cascading waters of the Tine River, shadows and light play beautifully on the lovingly-restored wooden walls. At night, the mill is spectacularly lit making it a truly unforgettable sight. Day or night, these buildings give us a glimpse into one of the important local industries of the past. Modern-day visitors get a hands-on understanding of the antique hydraulics used to operate the mill, press, forge and sawmill. A small exposition of furniture and antique tools completes the visit. Open : July and August. Rest of the year, upon reservation. » www.vimoti.ch ................................................................................................................... ...................................................................................................................

THE CHABLAIS HISTORICAL MUSEUM, VOUVRY Become an archaeologist and take a trip back in time to the dawn of humanity and of the Chablais ! Learn about Homer’s Troy and see the stone tools used by of the Chablais’ earliest inhabitants over 40 000 years ago, but watch out for the wild warriors and bearded wise men you might meet on the way ! » www.museeduchablais.ch ................................................................................................................... ...................................................................................................................

THE ST-GINGOLPH BOATING HISTORY MUSEUM This unique and intriguing museum presents a fascinating array of documents and objects concerning the boats that have crisscrossed Lake Geneva, or Lac Leman in French. Perched high in the attic of a grand manor house, under a magnificent framework of beams dating back to 1752, the museum retraces the history of merchant boating on Lake Geneva from the XV to the XX centuries. Other exhibits cover the naval shipyard and the village community in the golden age of the barques, the instantly recognisable Lemanic boats with the graceful lateen sails, or « butterfly wing » sails. We also have a whole fleet of model boats, from the huge old ocean-going Naus to brigantines, corsairs and steamers. » www.st-gingolph.ch/musee ................................................................................................................... ...................................................................................................................

CHÂTEAU DE CHILLON, MONTREUX Step over Chillon’s drawbridge and take a trip back in time to the XII and XVI centuries, when this starkly beautiful castle perched on a rocky outcropping in Lake Geneva was a strategic key on the road to Italy. From the mountainous coastline, Chillon presents the unforgiving façade of an impregnable military fortress. From the lakeside, the castle is all elegance and princely residence. The site is made up of some 25 buildings, some of which are over a thousand years old. The castle was completely renovated and considerably enlarged in the XIII century by Pierre II of Savoy and has changed hands many times since. Today, visitors may tour Chillon from the cellar to the top of the donjon, with a particularly chilling stop in the prison where the Swiss patriot Bonivard was held from 1530 to 1536. This inspired Lord Byron’s famous poem, « The Prisoner of Chillon » (1816). CHÂTEAU D’AIGLE Perched on the remnants of a prehistoric Bronze Age refuge, Aigle Castle was built as an important 13th century bastion in the relentless Savoyard advance into Valaisan territories. The castle has recently undergone a complete and painstaking restoration and part of the castle now houses the Museum of Wine and Vineyards.
