Connecting People Who Care With Causes That Matter

Thank You for 28 Years! N DO er EN emb L M cC L M oard BIL ar B Ye 28

“Bill has been an integral part of the Community Foundation for many years as he served on the board from 1989— 2016. He was invaluable in our search for a new executive director when Judy Waters retired. Also, he has been a huge part of, as well as led, our finance committee for many years. He always brought a sense of purpose and a clear direction to our board and its mission.”

For 28 years, Bill McClendon served on the Community Foundation’s board. He joined when we were still a fledgling organization and helped us grow and thrive over time, serving on the board and finance committee as well as becoming a fund holder. Earlier this year, Bill announced his retirement from the board, part of his goal to simplify and spend more time traveling with his wife Vivian. He still serves, though, as an emeritus board member, for which we are grateful. Bill, from all of us, a huge “THANK YOU”! We would not be where we are today without your support and dedication!

“Bill was actively engaged as a board member for a couple of decades. For many years he spent long hours behind the scenes analyzing the Community Foundation’s financial records and planning for the Community Foundation’s financial future. His financial expertise has been invaluable, but we also appreciated the heart and energy he brought to his service as a board member. When Bill talked, the board listened!” —Ethel Andersen Board Member

“I am grateful to have served on this board alongside Bill. He is a man of great character, who listens well. Bill puts his thoughts and words into action, which has been proven by his deeds. He has sown many seeds of support for the Community Foundation and this community. Bill, we will all miss your wisdom. Congratulations and continue to enjoy life!”

Senator Shafer’s Scholarship Combines American History with Character Values Character. It’s important but how often do we sit down and actually think about developing it? Seeing a need to do just that, especially among high school students, Georgia Senator David Shafer created the David Shafer Essay Scholarship.

Grant Awards Breakfast WHY IT IS

"It’s Good2Give because the things that can be done when people work together towards a goal are amazing and potentially life changing!” —Amy Bray Attorney, Coulter & Sierra

Over $300,000 in Grants Awarded! Our annual grant awards breakfast is one of the highlights of the year. After all, it’s why we do what we do. This year we awarded 28 grants totaling $303,409, the most money we’ve ever awarded! Our Good2Give Community Fund provides the funding for the grants, and, with the help of our fundholders, is the largest distribution for our annual grant cycle. Like last year, our fundholders generously gave again — allowing us to make an even bigger impact. “This year we streamlined our grant process, asking for nonprofits to initially submit letters of intent. We had a record number of letters —167!” said President and CEO Randy Redner. “Selected nonprofits were then asked to submit a grant application. After much deliberation, our grants committee chaired by Julie Keeton Arnold, narrowed those down to 28 nonprofit winners. “That’s when our generous fundholders stepped in again, allowing us to go above and beyond so we could grant all of those 28 requests. We are so thankful for the incredibly generous community and fundholders we have!” It’s not too early to start giving to help meet next year’s grant requests. Visit our web site, click on Good2Give and donate online. Every dollar counts!

NONPROFIT FUNDHOLDER SPOTLIGHT

An RX for Health... and Hope

A short drive from Downtown Lawrenceville, the Hope Clinic sits just off Langley Road. The parking lot in front is typically crowded — after all, the clinic sees some 8,000 patients a year. Many of those 8,000 patients have chronic health issues, including the biggest culprit — diabetes. “We are a primary care facility and see whatever walks in the door within our scope of practice. But we mostly see diabetes and the complications that go with it,” said Dr. William Martin.

Soft spoken, with a gentle spirit, Dr. Martin is the reason the clinic even exists. He spent more than 40 years as a staff physician with the Gwinnett Hospital System, practicing internal medicine. But along the way, he saw a need — a need to provide an affordable alternative to the hospital emergency room for uninsured patients needing primary care. So he, along with his wife Pam, who is executive director, founded the Hope Clinic in 2002, specializing in internal medicine and chronic care diagnosis. “It’s been a real joy and very gratifying to be here,” Dr. Martin said.

As the demand has grown over the years, the clinic has added staff. Today their roster includes Dr. Daniel M. Greenberg and certified nurse practitioner Jennie Mathen, as well as nurses and office staff. Together they supply a significant portion of the available charitable primary care capacity in Gwinnett.

DR. WILLIAM MARTIN

Unlike other more traditional models, the Hope Clinic provides care based on a compassionate and innovative fee structure. Instead of basing the fees on actual care costs, they implemented a sliding scale based on the patient's household income. They call the difference between these fees and actual cost of care the Compass Gap. For many years, the Community Foundation has come alongside the Hope Clinic, helping them fulfill their health care mission. In addition, earlier in 2017, the Hope Clinic became a fundholder at the Community Foundation. “The Community Foundation has not only given directly to us, but has also served as an effective introduction for us to other members of the philanthropic community, for which we are very grateful,” said Pam Martin.
