Backpack Program Feeds Hungry Kids The Leavenworth Community United Methodist Church (LCUMC) is working with schools, businesses, and charitable groups in the Leavenworth community to help feed hungry children over the weekend. In the Cascade School District, approximately 300 children are eligible for free or reduced lunch programs. The students are identified by school counselors and receive backpacks anonymously on Fridays. The backpacks include two breakfasts, lunches, and snacks for the weekend. The program focuses on choosing the healtiest items possible - such as organic milk, peanut butter, and applesauce - to help educate children on nutritious options. In its first year, the Backpack Program fed 15 local children. With a Regional Impact Grant, the program is now able to leverage funds in partnership with other organizations and increase the number of backpacks available for kids.

Staying Active and Independent for Life The S.A.I.L. (Stay Active and Independent for Life) program at Wellness Place provides fall prevention and exercise programs for seniors 65 and older as well as others recovering from illnesses. Typically we have around 10 participants per class, 2-3 times a week. The participants love SAIL classes for many reasons: social interaction, new friendships, health benefits, laughter, energetic music, and great instructors. During every single session, I hear tons of laughter and sense a strong comradery! And best of all - it’s FREE!“ —Erin Cass, Executive Director Wellness Place

“

Listening Centers Improve Young Readers The grant has been a huge benefit to my class this year. My students are so much more engaged in their literacy center activities, and as a result, their skills are growing in leaps and bounds! I have one student who has gone from an early Kindergarten reader/writer, to almost at a 2nd grade level! This is largely due to his opportunity to explore literacy activities that are high-interest, and at his level. The students particularly love having new tools to use to practice their spelling words, using the iPods to listen to great literature, and having brand new high-interest books to read in the classroom library.“ —Megan Huckaby,Teacher Tonasket Elementary

Learning Salmon Life Cycles Through Art All 4th grade students at Virginia Grange Elementary participated in a project to study salmon and ecosystems, designing and carving block prints, and participation in a riparian restoration project on the Salmon Creek near the school. “All of the students were engaged and challenged the whole time” said Jancey Marsh, 4th grade teacher. “This project would not have been made available to our highpoverty population of students had it not been for the grant. What a great experience for all 90 of them!”

Puppetry Makes Learning to Read Fun for All High school students perform a puppet show for Kindergarteners at Virginia Grange Elementary School using the materials purchased from a Classrooms Can! grant. School Librarian Susan Brown said, “My husband is the high school art teacher and he says he can rarely get two of his Spanishspeaking students to use their beginning English... the day they did the puppet show was the most English he had ever heard them use!” When the puppet theater is not being used, children use it as a space to read. “There are usually 5 or 6 kids without an inch to spare.”

Six Year Olds Learn to Play the Violin “When we got the funding, I thought: oh my gosh, we are going to give 6 year olds violins,” said Annie Schmidt, Peshastin-Dryden parent and grant-writer. “It was so exciting!” Before the violins arrived, the children prepared by practicing with macaroni and cheese boxes as the body of the violin and a stick as the neck. “The best part about the program is that it exposes these kids to something they wouldn’t get otherwise” said Annie. Today, the school has agreed to continue funding the program through the 2015 school year.

Exploring Marine Life through Backpacking For each student, this was the first backpacking experience and the longest they had been away from family members. They had a great learning experience studying marine life in a variety of settings while also learning backpacking skills and a sense of self-sufficiency. We took a trip up north from Rialto beach, climbing over rocks and down logs, racing the tides. I told them they were part of about 5% of people in the world who had ever done this kind of wilderness beach trip.” —Chas Pauly, Teacher Manson High School Extension Program

“ “ “

Why nursing? I enjoy working with people, every day is different, and there are so many opportunities. Receiving the scholarship allowed me to go back to school and study a career that is challenging and very rewarding. Each day brings a new chance to learn and help others live a life of improved health.” —Scott Alexander, Cancer Care/Betsy Tontini Nursing Scholarship, CVCH Holly Williams Nursing Scholarship, Dr. Steve George Kerr-Medical Memorial Scholarship

My long-term goals include receiving my Bachelor’s degree with a major in biology and a minor in Spanish. I hope to attend medical school and become a pediatrician. Without the assistance of this scholarship, I would not be able to reach my education and career goals.” —Elisabet Sitio-Herrera, Fisk and Lila Gerhardt Scholarship, Linda M. Safar Memorial Scholarship

I have grown up in an agriculture family. Being underprivileged financially has helped me realize the value of pursuing a college education. My decision is not only to benefit myself, but for me to pave the path for my younger siblings. Thank you for being part of my future and helping with not only my dream, but my family’s dream for me.” —Dalia Hernandez Farias, LeMaster Auvil Scholarship

Nonprofit Practices Institute The Nonprofit Practices Institute (NPI), in partnership with the Icicle Fund, offers trainings, workshops, seminars, and other learning and networking opportunities tailored to help strengthen and build capacity within our local nonprofits.

NPI Workshops NPI hosts several workshops throughout the year, each focusing on a different topic relevant to the needs of the nonprofit community. This year’s programming included topics on board service, planned giving, and strategic planning. Workshops are offered at two locations to better serve the nonprofit across the region with a nominal $15 registration fee.

NPI 6th Annual Summit This year’s annual summit featured topics including rural partnerships, media and marketing, board service, finance, volunteerism, advocacy through storytelling, and more. Over 180 attendees from across the region networked and enjoyed the day-long conference featuring presenters that are experts in their field.

Board Celebration Dinner Volunteering on a nonprofit board takes dedication and commitment. Each year, the foundation recognizes and honors those who participate in board service with a dinner at Sleeping Lady Resort in Leavenworth or Sun Mountain Lodge in Winthrop. Networking and a special guest presenter make this event inspirational for all those who attend.

Affordable, Expert Training for Local Nonprofits NPI is a great re-energizer! There is always the opportunity to learn something brand new, see something in a new way, or be reminded of something you heard or learned before and needed refreshing. For small organizations it is a great time to network, hear the ideas of other organizations, and renew connection with other organizations who live in the same "world" as we do. It is also a great learning opportunity for board members who are new to board work or just need a new perspective. It is the training we need to grow and develop as an organization that we can't afford to acquire on our own!” —NPI Summit Attendee (excerpt from survey response)

Trusted Partnerships Through Agency Funds For 30 years, the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust has relied on partnerships to create a livable community for all, regardless of one’s background or status. One of our greatest partners has been the Community Foundation of North Central Washington. We have entrusted both our Endowment Fund and Stewardship Fund with the foundation, as they repeatedly show a high level of competence and attentiveness in managing these funds. Their investment strategy assures my Board of Directors— and ultimately those who generously contribute to the Land Trust—that our funds are providing the maximum benefit to our community. Their Investment Committee is highly responsive to our fiscal requirements and our inquiries on the status of the Land Trust accounts. As a trusted partner, the foundation also provides key insights, training, and support that allows our organization to become a more sustainable and effective non-profit. All in all, the Community Foundation is a sensible choice for non-profits and their donors in North Central Washington.” —Bob Bugert, Executive Director Chelan-Douglas Land Trust

Partners in Giving

Partners in Giving (PIG) is an annual giving program that provides individuals, families, groups, and businesses an opportunity to join the Community Foundation without having to open a fund. Last year Partners in Giving disbursed over $18,000 to support various programs at the foundation.

Strengthened Nonprofits

Each year, there are more grant requests than the foundation is able to award, resulting in partial funding for some. This year the Partners in Giving awarded $5,000 to supplement the grantmaking program.

Supported Scholarships This year the foundation awarded nearly $500,000 in scholarships this year to NCW students. Many of them would not be achieving their dreams of higher education without this financial support. Partners in Giving added a total $1,453 to several scholarships to help boost financial assistance.

In partnership with the Icicle Fund, the Community Foundation offers workshops, trainings, and professional development opportunities for nonprofit boards, staff, and volunteers. Partners in Giving supported costs for “Leadership Circles”, a peer coaching program for local nonprofit Executive Directors.

Helped Protect Resources Your Community Foundation works to learn and understand the needs of the community and connect with people like you who want to give back to the place we love. Partners in Giving helped to support the foundation’s operations to support this work and ensure financial resources are available for generations to come.

Fostering Leadership through Peer Coaching The Partners in Giving helped to support several programs at the foundation, including “Leadership Circles”, a peer learning and coaching program for nonprofit Executive Directors. “Feeling supported and having the resources and years of experience saved my organization from taking on items that aren’t in line with the organizational goals” shared a program participant. “It ensured I was focused, on task, provided amazing efficiencies and allowed me the confidence that every dollar we spent as an organization was purposeful. This leadership opportunity could not be improved.”
